Ultra-cold neutron (UCN) is attractive for a search of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM). It is crucial to store UCNs with high density in a bottle for nEDM measurement apparatus. To increase the density, time focusing technique can be useful, where slow neutrons are accelerated and fast neutrons are decelerated by using magnetic potential. This device is called rebuncher. The rebuncher consists of a gradient magnet, RF coil, and neutron guide. The magnet generates a field gradient of 3.5 T/m (from 1 T to 0.2 T within 24 cm) in the longitudinal direction. By using anisotropic inter-poles, the magnet is compact and keeps the gradient uniform. The fabricated magnet showed good performance as designed. © 2012 IEEE.

A neutron beamline for the study of fundamental physics has been constructed at the spallation neutron source of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). In-flight measurement of the neutron lifetime and the development of the transport optics of ultracold neutrons are in progress. The present status of the beamline and these experiments is reported.

We developed AFP NMR in an aluminum container for polarized noble gas nuclei. The radio frequency magnetic field inside the aluminum container was designed from computer simulations. The polarization loss by the AFP spin flip of 3He was measured to be as low as 3.8x10-4. With this technique, a compact in-situ polarizing 3He neutron spin filter with AFP NMR is demonstrated.

In the present study the restoration of interference fringes, whose visibility is degraded by the presence of a finite crossing angle between the two paths of a neutron interferometer, is experimentally demonstrated. A crossing angle of 1.0 mu rad was introduced using an optical component consisting of a magnetic multilayer mirror, a wedge-shaped gap layer, and a nonmagnetic multilayer mirror. To restore the interference fringes, magnetic gradients of 0.64 G/cm were applied using two electro-quadrupole magnets. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We are developing a high-resolution small angle neutron scattering instrument for very cold neutrons (VCN). Our concept includes a magnetic lens for focusing of the beam at the detector plane. The lens consists of one permanent-magnet sextupole array rotating outside another stationary sextupole array, to focus a pulsed white beam of neutrons. Thus the instrument operates in time of flight mode. The prototype magnetic lens has a bore of 15 mm diameter and length of 66 mm, producing a magnetic field gradient oscillating from 1.5×104 to 5.9×104 T/m2, with frequency ≤25 Hz. A torque-canceling magnet around the lens suppresses the torque of rotation from the outer array to 1/3. We have demonstrated the performance of the lens, over wavelength range from 30 to 48 Å, on the PF2-VCN beam line at the Institut Laue-Langevin, France. The focused beam image was the same size as the source, without chromatic aberration, with focal length of 1.14 m. We also studied the performance of this configuration for high-resolution SANS, in a compact geometry (just 5 m long). The measurable q range of this system was 0.009 Å-1≤q≤0.3 Å-1 or 0.004 Å-1≤q≤0.08 Å-1 for sample to detector distances of 100 and 465 mm, respectively. Here, we present the results of our lens characterization study along with the SANS results on a tri-block copolymer (F127 Pluronic) and on a stretched polymer blend (with the Shish-Kebab structure). © 2010 Elsevier B.V. For the future fundamental physics experiments by using cold neutrons, we are developing a device which can measure the neutron polarization degree by accuracy significantly below 10-3. A quadrupole magnet is one of the promising candidate to measure the neutron polarization degree by such extremely high precision. We have performed a polarization experiment by using the quadrupole magnets at the Very Cold Neutron (VCN) port of the PF-2 in the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL). As a result, we obtained the polarization degree P with very high accuracy P=0.9994±0.0001(stat.)±0.0003(syst.), which meet our requirement significantly. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have developed thin film Fresnel lenses made of a hydrogen-free amorphous polymer for neutron focusing purposes. The parametric resonance enhancement of the phase of neutrons due to non-Newtonian anomalous gravitation is considered. The existence of such resonances is confirmed by numerical calculations. A possible experimental scheme for observing this effect is discussed based on an existing neutron interferometer design. © 2011 American Physical Society.

We have developed a new multilayer cold-neutron interferometer using a pair of beam splitting etalons (BSEs) with an air gap of 189 μm in spacing. This is the first multilayer neutron interferometer that separates two paths from each other completely without an overlap. Clear interference fringes with a contrast of 67% have been observed using a monochromatic cold-neutron beam with a wavelength of 0.88 nm. © 2010 The Physical Society of Japan.

A triplet magnetic lens system composed of three sextupole-magnets and two spin flippers was constructed to focus pulsed neutrons in a wide wavelength range with same focal lengths. In this study, we performed a pulsed neutron beam focusing experiment with the system. The design of the system and the experimental results are shown and discussed. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Neutron Reflectometry for Observation of Machined Surface Roughness 査読有り

Neutron reflectometry was applied for the characterization of machined roughness on iron surfaces, including a buried solid-solid contacting surface. The observed distribution of the reflected neutron beam could be explained using a structure factor estimated from the Fourier transform of the physical roughness measured by a contact-type roughness gauge, particularly in the case of a periodic surface structure. In the case of random roughness, the accumulation of beams specularly reflected from every small local region of the surface gave a better explanation of the broad distribution of the scattered beam, where each local region was assumed to be flat and differently inclined relative to the incident beam direction. When the surface was buried beneath another material, the width of the distribution of the reflected beam became slightly wider than that in air. Although neutron reflectometry for the characterization of surface roughness has various limitations, it is still an effective tool for nondestructively observing the surface roughness at a buried contacting surface. © 2009 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.
