Molecular activated recombination (MAR) has been clearly observed for the first time in a divertor plasma simulator. A small amount of hydrogen gas puffing into a helium plasma strongly reduced the ion particle flux along the magnetic field, although the conventional radiative and three-body recombination processes were quenched. Careful comparison of the observed helium Balmer spectra with collisional radiative atomic and molecular data indicates that the population distribution over the atomic levels with relatively low principal quantum numbers can be well explained by taking the MAR effects into account. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Erosion and Redeposition Processes of Molybdenum with Oblique Incidence of Magnetic Field Reviewed

Erosion and redeposition processes have been investigated using a linear plasma device and a Monte Carlo simulation code. Argon plasmas were irradiated on a molybdenum substrate with an oblique incidence of magnetic field. The erosion distributions depending on the direction of magnetic field are clearly observed. Numerical code analysis gives a qualitative explanation for the erosion profiles by considering the effect of prompt redeposition of high Z material. However, we have still quantitative differences for their erosion and redeposition rates.

Interactions between poloidal ion flow associated with E× B drift and dust particles have been investigated in magnetized cylindrical electron cyclotron resonance plasmas, in which radial electric field is controlled by a biased ring-shaped electrode. The dust particles are spun out and removed from the plasma due to poloidal ion drag force, even when the inward electric force on the dust particles is larger than the gravitational force. This indicates the possibility of using a new method to remove the dust particles from the processing plasma. On the other hand, in order to sustain the dust particles in the plasma, the effects of this poloidal ion flow should be substantially reduced by the friction between the dust particles and neutral gas.
