Erosion and redeposition processes of molybdenum, a high-Z material, were investigated in the linear plasma device TPD-I. Comparison between the experimental results and numerical analysis with a 3D Monte Carlo simulation code indicated that the observed erosion profile could be explained by taking account of the effect of prompt redeposition of high-Z material.

A comprehensive investigation has been performed of the static and dynamic behaviour of detached recombining plasmas in the linear divertor plasma simulator NAGDIS-II. For stationary plasma detachment, the transition from electron ion recombination (EIR) to molecular activated recombination (MAR) has been observed by injecting hydrogen gas into high density helium plasmas. The particle loss rate due to MAR is found to be comparable to that of EIR. Experiments have also been performed by the injection of a plasma heat pulse produced by RF heating into the detached helium plasma to demonstrate the dynamic behaviour of volumetric plasma recombination. Negative spikes in the Balmer series line emission were observed and found to be similar to the so called negative ELM observed in tokamak divertors. Observed Balmer spectra were analysed in detail using the collisional-radiative model. A rapid increase of the ion flux to the target plate was observed associated with the re-ionization of the highly excited atoms generated by EIR.

Measurements of ion and electron temperatures have been performed in detaching helium -hydrogen plasmas in a linear divertor simulator experiment using spectroscopy, a Langmuir probe, and an omegatron mass spectrometer. Detachment in these plasmas is characterized by a significant (≈20×) reduction in the central plasma flux at the target plate as the target region neutral pressure is increased from 2 to 12 mTorr. The data indicate that partially detached gas-target plasmas consist of a hot (Te≈5 eV) core region along the axis of the plasma column, surrounded by a cold (Te ≈0.1 eV) halo region of recombining plasma. At Te = 5 eV, plasma recombination is negligible compared with ionization; these experiments therefore provide evidence that detachment is primarily caused by radial transport and by a gradual drop in the ionization source as the temperature of the core region drops below 5 eV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Detailed spectroscopic measurements have been carried out in the linear divertor plasma simulator, NAGDIS-II in order to acquire the accurate evaluation of the electron temperature, which leads to a deeper understanding of the characteristics of detached recombining plasmas. Electron temperature in the detached recombining plasmas was evaluated by two different spectroscopic methods, using continuum emission and a series of line emission from highly excited levels, giving different electron temperatures. The reasons are discussed based on the effects of energetic electrons.

The existence of transverse dust-lattice wave (T-DLW) propagating in a one-dimensional strongly coupled dust chain levitated in dc argon plasma at low gas pressure was assessed. Both parts of the complex wave number were measured in the experiments. The real part showed that the T-DLW propagation as a backward wave.
