In order to validate some current decay models during the current quench, the plasma current decay time was studied using the experimental plasma resistance and inductance in high poloidal beta, βp, disruptions in JT-60U. The plasma resistance and inductance were evaluated from an equilibrium calculation code and the measurement value of a magnetic sensor, the electron temperature evaluated by using ECE measurement and the electron density measured by FIR interferometer. In high βp disruptions, it was found that the electron temperature at the plasma center just after current quench starts was approximately 1-4 keV under almost the same current decay time observed during the initial phase of current quench. This result indicates that the electron temperature itself plays no major role in the determination of the current decay time in the initial phase of current quench. Moreover, the current decay time predicted by a modified L/R model [Y. Shibata et al., Nucl. Fusion 50, 025015 (2010)], in which the time derivative of plasma inductance was considered, was in good agreement with the experimental current decay time, while the values obtained from the conventional L/R model were two orders of magnitude larger than the experimental results.

Japan-US cooperation program TITAN (Tritium, Irradiation and Thermofluid for America and Nippon) started in April 2007 as 6-year project. This is the summary report at the midterm of the project. Historical overview of the Japan-US cooperation programs and direction of the TITAN project in its second half are presented in addition to the technical highlights.

We have studied implantation of low-energy deuterium ions into Fe 2O3 films and deuterium (D)-uptake in Fe2O 3 films, which were prepared by oxidation of Fe sheets in air at 400°C for 20 min. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the films are mixture of hexagonal α-Fe2O3 (hematite) and cubic γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite). According to Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) of 1.8 MeV H+, the composition is found to be crudely stoichiometric (Fe:O=2:3). The samples were subjected to D2+-plasma exposure using AC-glow discharge. The amount of D-uptake in Fe2O3 is evaluated to be ∼6×10 16cm2 for AC voltage of 1.5 kV in 0.4 Torr of D 2 gas for 15 min. The amount of D-uptake in Fe2O 3 appears to be larger by a factor of three than that in Fe. Comparisons of XRD patterns and RBS spectra before and after D2+-plasma exposure show no appreciable change of the crystalline structure, quality and composition. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Oxy-combustion generates a high temperature field (above 3000 K), which is applied to next generation power plants and high temperature industrial technologies because of N2 free processes. However, the combustion temperature is so high that the furnace wall may be fatally damaged. In addition, it is very difficult to control the heat flux and chemical species' concentrations because of rapid chemical reactions. We have developed a new method for controlling the flame by electromagnetic force on this field. In this paper, we experimentally investigated the power coupling between the premixed oxy-combustion with methane and radio frequency (RF) power through the induction coil. By optimizing the power coupling, we observed that the flame can absorb RF power up to 1.5 kW. Spectroscopic measurements also showed an increase in the emission intensity from OH radicals in the flame, indicating improved combustibility.
