MinaQn: Web-based Participatory Sensing Platform for Citizen-centric Urban Development

市民参加型まちづくり（Participatory planning）とは，まちづくりの過程に市民を巻き込むことであり，実際の都市の中で起こっている問題を素早く発見，解決できる可能性が高い．市民参加型まちづくりを促進するためには市の職員と市民の間での日常的なコミュニケーションを活性化することが重要である．本研究の目的は，人々が日常的に持つモバイル端末やPC端末を通して情報をやりとりする参加型センシングを市民参加型まちづくりにも適用することである．既存の参加型センシングの例では，質問の内容カテゴリが限定的なものや，市民の意見収集，意見交換を行うための特定のアプリケーションのインストールが必要であるものが存在する．また，市民から提供された情報はプライバシ情報を除いたオープンな情報であることやシステムの操作が容易であることが望ましい．本研究ではこれらの課題を解決し，市民参加型まちづくりのための参加型センシングシステム，MinaQnを提案する．本研究ではMinaQnを2週間にわたって3都市（藤沢市・茅ヶ崎市・寒川町）の公式ホームページに組み込み，市の職員および市民に利用してもらう実証実験を行った．全体として1,000個以上の回答データと市の職員および市民からのフィードバックを得ることで，定性的および定量的な評価を行い，将来異なる地域や多くの市民に持続的に参加してもらうためにはどうすればよいか，これからの参加型センシングシステムのデザイン指針を示した．特に災害時において今後より多くの市民に位置情報を提供してもらうためには，質問の意図説明やプッシュ通知など市からの積極性が必要なことや，市の職員が実際に自由な質問設定をするために自治体の中あるいは市全体で議論し質問内容の枠組みを増やしていけるような取り組みや制度の策定が必要なことが分かった．Participatory planning is to involve citizens in a process of urban development, which is likely to find out and solve a problem happening in an actual city. To promote participatory planning, it is important to activate everyday communication between city officials and citizens. The purpose of this research is to apply the participatory sensing technology to participatory planning which people exchange information through their mobile devices or computers. In the existing examples of participatory sensing, the categories of questions are limited or it is necessary to install a specific application for collecting and reflecting citizens' demands. Besides, it is required that data from citizens should be open without privacy information and also operation of a system should be easy. To solve these problems, we propose MinaQn (Mina means everybody in Japanese), a participatory sensing system for citizen-centric urban development. We carried out a two weeks experiment in corporation with 3 cities in Japan. Overall, more than 1,000 answer data and feedback were gathered and we measured the effectiveness of MinaQn with qualitative and quantitative data. Also we direct the design policies of future participatory sensing systems. In particular, to get more people involved in providing their location information in the event of a natural disaster, we found that an active agent of city officials and support for the establishment of standards and systems for setting free questions are needed.

Since current digital fabrication relies on 3D printer very much, there are several concerns such as printing cost (i.e., both financial and temporal cost) and sometimes too homogeneous impression with plastic filament. To address and solve the problem, we propose ReFabricator, a computational fabrication tool integrating everyday objects into digital fabrication. ReFabrication is a concept of fabrication, mixing the idea of Reuse and Digital Fabrication, which aims to fabricate new functional shape with ready made products, effectively utilizing its behavior. As a system prototype, we have implemented a design tool which enables users to gather up every day objects and reassemble them to another functional shape with taking advantages of both analog and digital fabrication. In particular, the system calculates the optimized positional relationship among objects, and generates joint objects to bond the objects together in order to achieve a certain shape.

Recent technological trends in mobile/wearable devices and sensors have been enabling an increasing number of people to collect and store their "lifelog" easily in their daily lives. Beyond exercise behavior change of individual users, our research focus is on the behavior change of teams, based on lifelogging technologies and lifelog sharing. In this paper, we propose and evaluate six different types of lifelog sharing models among team members for their exercise promotion, leveraging the concepts of "competition" and "collaboration." According to our experimental mobile web application for exercise promotion and an extensive user study conducted with a total of 64 participants over a period of three weeks, the model with a "competition" technique resulted in the most effective performance for competitive teams, such as sports teams.

This paper proposes a person identification algorithm that can be used when searching for persons from multiple images captured by flying robots. The images taken by such robots have low resolution and contain various viewing angles of people because they fly at a safe distance from and often move around people. The proposed person identification algorithm is based on appearance and can identify a person from low-resolution images of the upper body. In appearance-based person identification, the accuracy is low when a single image is used. Therefore, the accuracy is improved by accumulating the score. Experimental results obtained using 40 subjects show that the identification accuracy based on images having different view angles is better than that based on images having similar view angles. Further, the identification accuracy increase even when rear images of the person that are barely distinguishable from those of another person are added to the input images. In addition, it can identify persons even when the size of the upper body image is as small as 15 pixels. We performed the identification experiment using images taken by an aerial-robot while it was actually flying and proved the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Recently, many researchers have been focusing on the detection and classification of urban events by information analysis on social networks. Previous works mainly use text analysis of users' posts on social networks for detecting urban events. However, this approach has a limitation that the users' posts must mention the event for the analysis to be conducted. We propose a new method for classifying urban events by extracting user interest from the location-based social network information without text analysis. The proposed method includes analyzing common friends of users in the vicinity of the event venue and extracting common the friends' attributes by referring to related Wikipedia information. We designed and implemented the proposed method, and conducted an experiment for evaluating our method. Our experimental result shows that our method can classify events well in cases where participants have similar interests.

In Japan, there are 1.2milion kilometers or more of the road, of which 900,000 km of road has been paved. Paved road has been painted compartment line to separate many vehicles and driver-pedestrian. Compartment line is important for drivers and pedestrians because they can recognize for they are aware of the width of the roadway and the sidewalk by the compartment line. Therefore, municipality should inspect the ongoing compartment line but they are inspected by people so the burden for road management is big. The purpose of this research would be to automatically detect the damage of the compartment line. The image obtained from cameras, applying random forest. In this experiment, we used more than about 50,000 of images by capturing a Walking camera and a vehicle-mounted camera. Baseline and precision comparison result, the detection of damage to compartment line, it was confirmed that the proposed method is effective.

Collecting urban data in a citywide scale plays a fundamental role in the research, development and implementation of smart cities. This demo introduces Cruisers, an automotive sensing platform for smart cities, which is developed based on the following ideas. a) Garbage collecting trucks are used as host automobiles to accommodate sensors, b) 3G cellular communication network is used to wirelessly deliver sensed data directly to servers, and c) Proxy server( s) are adopted to convert the format of sensed data to required ones. This platform has been deployed to 24 garbage collecting trucks at Fujisawa city, i.e., nearly 1/4 of the total number of such trucks in the city. An iOS application is also developed to demonstrate the sensing process and the covered area.
