Hanoi City, Vietnam, presented the Hanoi Master Plan 2030 in 2011 to cope with rapid population growth and urbanisation. The main objective of this two-part study was to investigate the impacts of land use changes brought by the master plan on urban heat islands in Hanoi by 2030. This paper analyses the contributions of land use changes and global warming to the future increase in urban temperatures in Hanoi by the 2030s. Firstly, numerical simulations using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) were conducted for the present land use as well as the land use condition of the master plan under the same weather conditions to detect only the impact of land use changes. Secondly, WRF simulations were conducted for the land use condition of the master plan under the influence of global warming in the 2030s utilising the climate data projected by a Global Climate Model (GCM), Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate Version 5 (MIROC5), via a direct dynamical downscaling method. In the 2030s, the average air temperature increase in existing urban areas was projected to be up to 2.1 °C, of which up to 1.5 and 0.6 °C are attributable to global warming and land use changes, respectively.

In this study, future projections of the thermal environment in the urban districts in Vinh city, Vietnam were performed by a regional atmospheric model, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, combined with a pseudo global warming method. The target period was a month of June (hottest month) in the 2030s. A city master plan for the city which targets the year of 2030 with a population of 900,000 and covers an area of approximately 250 km2 was introduced in the future projections, and the impact of the introduction of the proposed plan on the future thermal environment (air temperature and heat stress index) in the urban districts was assessed. Moreover, two modified city master plans by changing the arrangement (northern or southern concentration) of the new urban districts were introduced, and the effects of the modifications on the future thermal environment in the urban districts were also investigated.

In this study, we focused on natural ventilation in a model house and its effects on the indoor airflow and thermal environments and human thermophysiological responses. Natural ventilation is one of the passive energy saving techniques to achieve low-energy and zero-energy houses. However, it is not always useful because of inappropriate (too low or too fast) airflow or high inflow temperature which makes people feel discomfort. The aim of the present and future studies is to quantitatively investigate the maximum availability of natural ventilation from the viewpoints of indoor airflow and thermal environments and human thermophysiological responses using a coupled analysis of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and human thermal model. We tested twelve cases by giving different conditions of the incoming flow (Temporal velocity pattern: 0.0-2.0 m/s, 0.8-1.2 m/s, and 1.0 m/s (constant) with 20° inflow angle; Temperature: 28 °C, 30 °C, 32 °C, and 34 °C) for natural ventilation in a model house. In the cases with the same inflow temperature, instantaneous skin temperature and heat losses of a human body change according to the inflow velocity patterns; however, their time-averaged values are almost the same because the time-averaged inflow velocities in the three velocity patterns are equal (1.0 m/s). Finally, the maximum availability of the natural ventilation is quantitatively discussed by adopting a finding from a subjective experiment under natural ventilation in a model house conducted by Saito et al. (2014). The subjective experiment indicates that the skin temperature (averaged over selected certain segments) without feeling discomfort is 34.5 °C or less. Judging from the experimental finding, the inflow temperature for the natural ventilation targeted in this study can be allowed up to 32.6 °C.

Development of a seamless merging method of mesoscale/regional meteorological models and engineering LES models (Part 2) A proposal of imposing the continuity condition on artificially generated inflow turbulence for LES and its application for the analysis of a plane boundary layer flow Reviewed

The generation of appropriate velocity fluctuations at the inflow boundary (inflow turbulence) for large eddy simulation (LES) is a critical and challenging issue, particularly when coupling mesoscale/regional meteorological models and engineering LES models. The authors have previously tested an artificial generation method of inflow turbulence based on the Cholesky decomposition of the Reynolds stresses in the LES analysis of a plane boundary layer flow. However, the well-generated inflow turbulence was rapidly and unphysically attenuated when it flowed downstream. We concluded that this was mainly caused by the dissatisfaction of the governing equations, i.e., continuity and momentum equations. In this study, an approach to imposing the continuity condition on the artificially generated inflow turbulence was proposed and, in the LES analysis of a plane boundary layer flow, its effects were examined by comparing the results with those without the continuity condition and using periodic inlet-outlet boundary condition. As a result, the attenuation of the turbulent kinetic energy near the inflow boundary was slightly improved by imposing the continuity condition on the artificially generated inflow turbulence.

The possibility of a huge earthquake and the following disasters, such as tsunami and ground liquefaction, in the near future has been pointed out in the third largest metropolitan area (Nagoya metropolitan area) in Japan. In the region including the Nagoya metropolitan area, a huge earthquake of magnitude 8 class has occurred every 100-150 years. The last huge earthquake in the region happened in 1944. Therefore, the viewpoint of disaster mitigation/prevention against an expected huge earthquake is crucial for future urban planning in the Nagoya metropolitan area. On the other hand, the population in the Nagoya metropolitan area is expected to decrease in the future. Such a decrease in population usually leads to a reduction of the urban area. In this study, three disaster mitigation/prevention urban structure models were designed for future urban planning of the 2050s (the target period in which about 100 years will have passed since the last huge earthquake) in the Nagoya metropolitan area considering a reduction in the urban area according to a projected decrease in population. Subsequently, the impacts of the introduction of the three disaster mitigation/prevention models, i.e., (1) a tsunami damage mitigation/prevention model, (2) a strong motion damage mitigation/prevention model, and (3) a ground liquefaction damage mitigation/prevention model, on the future (the 2050s) thermal environment were quantitatively investigated using a regional atmospheric model, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Moreover, an urban structure model that combined the three disaster mitigation/prevention models was constructed, and the effect of the combined model on the future thermal environment was also evaluated.

Extreme high temperature events occur frequently in Nagoya city of Japan, and have been of great concern recently because they bring risks to the energy supply, public health, and more. In this study, changes in electricity demand and thermal comfort in Nagoya city with future climate change were projected by WRF-CM-BEM which coupled a multi-layer urban canopy model CM, and a building energy model BEM in a regional climate model WRF. The results showed that summer time daily mean electric demand and human thermal comfort (SET*) in Nagoya city were projected to increase by about +4.9 W/floor m2 and 2.8 ºC in the 2070s, respectively. However, sensitivity experiments indicated that urban greening adaptation strategy have the potential to reduce by 33% and 10% of above projected values, respectively. In comparison with urban greening, anthropogenic heat reduction strategy was estimated to have smaller influence to improve future electric demand and human thermal comfort in Nagoya city.

In this study, a coupled analysis of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system simulations was applied to a multi-split air-conditioning system in the operation phase during a power-saving period in summer. Two different forced operation schemes for the indoor units, i.e., a regular rotation control and a lowest reference temperature control for switching cooling and fan modes, were designed, and the effects of the two operation schemes on the indoor thermal environment were investigated. When the reference temperature points for the indoor units were located at a height of the occupied zone, the lowest reference temperature control was better than the regular rotation control from the viewpoint of creating a more uniform thermal environment in the occupied zone.

In this study, future projections of the thermal and wind environments in June (hottest month) of the 2030s in Vinh city were performed by introducing a city master plan proposed by Nikken Sekkei Civil Engineering Ltd. The projections were carried out using a regional atmospheric model, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (Skamarock et al. 2008), combined with the pseudo global warming method proposed by Kimura and Kitoh (2007). By comparing with the present land use case, the effects of introducing the city master plan on the future thermal and wind environments in Vinh city were quantitatively investigated. Additional cases with the change in urban structure (northern or southern concentration of the new urban districts) were conducted, and the effects of the modifications of the city master plan on the future thermal and wind environments were also studied.

In this study, the effects of introducing vertical ventilation paths on the thermal and wind environments in city blocks were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In particular, the effects of two vertical geometric parameters of the buildings, i.e., the average height of the buildings and the standard deviation of the building heights, in the windward region on the pedestrian thermal and wind environments in both the windward and leeward regions were quantitatively evaluated. In the windward region, the standard deviation of the building heights in the region was more effective for improving the pedestrian thermal environment. On the other hand, the average height of the buildings in the windward region affected the pedestrian thermal environment in the leeward region more than did the standard deviation of the building heights in the windward region. Furthermore, the correlations between the space-averaged air temperature and wind velocity at the pedestrian level were different in the windward and leeward regions. In the windward region, the correlation became negative, while a positive correlation was observed in the leeward region.

Recently, vertical ventilation paths are receiving considerable attention as promising countermeasures to hot environment in summer. Vertical ventilation paths channel cooler upper winds into city blocks by using vertical turbulent diffusion enhanced by the vertical heterogeneity of building shapes. However, their effectiveness is limited because the temperature of the flow gradually becomes higher and the momentum of the flow for vertical ventilation paths gradually decreases. In this study, we investigated the effects of introducing vertical ventilation paths in city blocks by using CFD simulations. We examined the effects of the vertical heterogeneity of building shapes in the windward region on the thermal and wind environments in both the windward and leeward regions based on a heat balance analysis, space-averaged temperatures, and a proposed evaluation method using the turbulent kinetic energy profile.

In order to apply Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques to estimate pollutant dispersion in urban areas, it is important to assess the performance of numerical models used to estimate these phenomena. Recently, the MUST (Mock Urban Setting Test) has often been adopted as a test case for evaluating numerical models for micro-scale urban meteorology. This paper presents the results of model evaluation exercises carried out using MUST based on the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) experience. The results of model evaluation exercises conducted by AIJ are broadly consistent with the results obtained by the COST group. However, the variety of results by each computation can be minimized by setting standard computational conditions. All computations including both RANS and LES show good agreement with wind experiment data. In general, LES cases show comparable accuracy to RANS in predicting U and W. However, LES shows better agreement than RANS in TKE and concentration.

Tajimi, a city located in Gifu Prefecture, experienced the record high temperature in Japan (40.9 °C) on August 16, 2007. The problems associated with high temperatures in summer are very serious in the city. It is considered that various factors such as topographic basin effect and heat island around Nagoya affect high temperatures in Tajimi. However, each contribution of those factors is not clear enough. In this study, a sensitivity analysis of the factors in high temperatures in Tajimi for recent five years was conducted by using a regional atmospheric model, WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting). Here, we investigated the effects of urban heat islands in Tajimi and Nagoya and topographical effects on the thermal environment in Tajimi.

For merging of mesoscale/regional meteorological models and engineering large-eddy simulation (LES) models seamlessly, to generate appropriate velocity fluctuations at the inflow boundary (inflow turbulence) for engineering LES models is a very essential issue. In this study, we introduced three artificial generation methods of inflow turbulence based on the Cholesky decomposition of Reynolds stresses in the LES analysis of a plane boundary layer flow, and assessed the performance of those methods by comparing their results with those from a LES computation with periodic inlet-outlet conditions. In particular, we investigated the effects of space and/or time correlations of the generated inflow turbulence on the downstream turbulence characteristics.

A coupled analysis of CFD and HVAC system simulations was carried out to assess the mixing energy loss in an air-conditioned office room where heating and cooling operate in the perimeter and interior zones simultaneously. To evaluate the mixing energy loss, we conducted two simulations; one was the case with the airflow mixing between the perimeter and interior zones and the other was the case without the airflow mixing. By comparing the required coil loads between the cases with and without the airflow mixing, the mixing energy loss was estimated. The accuracy of the coupled analysis was assessed by comparing the results with those from an experiment by Ito (1988).

The current status and remaining issues of coupling CWE models with mesoscale meteorological models (MMM) are reviewed from the view point of computational wind engineers. By way of three examples to demonstrate the typical application areas where the coupling approaches are needed, the governing equations considered, and the difficulties to couple the models despite the different spatial and temporal scales are described. Next, recent attempts of single-model up-scaling of CWE models to meteorological scale wind flow and thermal environment are shown. The need to upgrade existing CWE models for appropriate up-scaling and the issues that require to be solved by the collaboration with meteorologists are pointed out. Finally, the recent achievements attained by other researchers are reviewed and the future directions of CWE studies are discussed. Emphasis is placed on coupling LES with MMM.

A numerical investigation of present (2006) and future (the 2070s) thermal environments in summer in the Nagoya Metropolitan Area was conducted using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. In the future projection, a pseudo-global warming method was incorporated to consider the effects of global warming as background data. Based on the simulation results, analyses of heat balance structures at several locations were also carried out using an urban heat balance model. The heat balance structures between the present and future projections were compared, and the differences in the heat transfer mechanisms between the present and future statuses were investigated.

The activity of a taskforce to make a guideline for a Diffusion Model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (DiMCFD) to use for the atmospheric environmental impact assessment is reported. The taskforce was established in 2006 by the Japan Society for Atmospheric Environment. The applicability of DiMCFD to environmental impact assessment may be very large; however, the results sometimes diverge if conditions are not specified adequately. In the first stage, we limited our efforts to the problems of short distance dispersion in urban areas under neutral stability. The consensuses and some results are shown.

A WRF-LES computation was carried out for the analysis of a wind environment in the summer in the Nagoya Metropolitan Area, which is located in the central part of Japan. We also performed a single WRF computation with no LES capability and compared the results between the WRF-LES and single WRF computations. The WRF-LES computation predicted a larger magnitude of wind velocity than the single WRF computation. In addition, we are now conducting other WRF-LES computations using the "LES-within-LES" method proposed by Moeng et al. (2007) and using our homemade LES software with an artificial generation method of inflow turbulence.

Turbulent flow over a two-dimensional steep hill was analyzed by large-eddy simulations (LES). Here, six LES computations were carried out using four different sub-grid scale (SGS) models and two different ground surface conditions. The accuracy of these computations was assessed by comparing the results with those from an experiment by Ishihara et at. (2001).

In this study, a new model that simulates spotting fires, which are a factor in the spread of fire, was developed. Fire spread simulations were conducted for a densely populated wooden building district in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, by the CFD (computational fluid dynamics)-based simulation model introducing the developed fire-spotting model. In addition, a relational expression between the burned area of past wooden building fires and the required amount of fire extinguishing water was derived, and based on the relational expression and the fire spread simulation results, a simple examination of renewal plans of water sources for firefighting was performed.

In recent years, in response to the intensification of flood damage caused by torrential rains and typhoons across the country, it is important to improve the resilience of living and production spaces by utilizing the rainwater infiltration, storage, and outflow control functions of green infrastructure in watershed units. In this study, we focus on the Fukuoka and Nagoya metropolitan areas, which have suffered severe flood damage in recent years, and aim to construct a rainwater infiltration, storage, and runoff control green space management system for watershed resilience. (2) Analyzing the correlation between the three-dimensional structure and management level for each green space type, (3) Evaluating rainwater infiltration, storage, and runoff control functions for each green space type and management level, and (4) Toward watershed resilience The basic knowledge of the construction of a green space management system was organized.

In this study, 1-minute weather data for ZEB evaluation was organized, and a method for filling in missing data in the 1-minute observations was investigated.
We showed that the hot-deck method can be used to fill in the missing data with practical accuracy. We also observed solar radiation in Indonesia, and verified a method for splitting the scattering component and the direct component from the global solar radiation. As a result, it was shown that the Perz model can be applied to tropical regions. We also studied a method for estimating downward IR radiation using satellite data and showed that it can estimate hourly values with practical accuracy. Furthermore, future severe weather data for the Nagoya area was organized, and its usefulness in evaluating the energy performance of buildings over their entire operational life was clarified.
