    Abstract

Rotaxanes, as one of the most fundamental mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs), have attracted considerable attention in many fields. However, a method that reconciles convenient, efficient, and “high‐value‐added” (such as reversibility, higher‐order structures, and diverse topologies) synthesis of rotaxanes, remains challenging. Here, we report a threading‐and‐shrinking strategy to quantitatively prepare [2]rotaxane and bis[2]rotaxane (higher than 99% conversion and 92% isolated yield for [2]rotaxane; 96% conversion, 80% isolated yield for bis[2]rotaxane). The rotaxanes with a chair‐like and an orthogonal geometry were synthesized in one pot by 365 nm UV light irradiation via shrinkage of macrocycle driven by reversible topology transformation between nonhomeomorphic structures, requiring no extra addition of reagents like stoppers and catalysts. The heat‐triggered reverse topology transformation quantitatively converts the chair‐like rotaxanes into pseudo‐rotaxanes to achieve mechanical unlocking. In contrast, rotaxanes with an orthogonal geometry exhibit thermal stability and remain mechanically interlocked upon heating.

    Abstract

We report the synthesis and characterization of a π‐expanded neutral PAH radical, benzo[cd]perylenyl (1) derived from the phenalenyl radical (2). Hückel molecular orbital (HMO) analysis reveals a uniformly distributed SOMO that enables effective two‐electron 20‐center bonding in a π‐dimer. ESR measurements of 1 show a long half‐life of 63 days in air‐saturated toluene at room temperature. Temperature‐dependent ESR and absorption spectra as well as DFT calculations confirm the preferential formation of a π‐dimer over a σ‐dimer with an association energy of approximately −65 kJ mol⁻¹, driven by enhanced dispersion interactions. These findings demonstrate that π‐expansion stabilizes organic radicals without bulky substituents while preserving intermolecular interactions offering new prospects for advanced materials in electronics and spintronics.

Introducing heavy atoms, or replacing atoms with heavier ones, is a routine approach for accelerating spin-flipping photophysical processes. However, predicting its impact on phosphorescence efficiency is not straightforward. Herein, we report an unexpected consequence of bromine-to-iodine substitution in a bromothienyl diketone derivative, TIPS-BrTn, that exhibits outstanding room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in cyclohexane solution. Contrary to our expectation, the iodo-congener TIPS-ITn exhibited feeble photoluminescence, which we confirmed as RTP by ultrafast spectroscopy. Further experimental and theoretical studies revealed that, in the T1 state, an excited-state symmetry breaking occurred on TIPS-ITn while TIPS-BrTn preserved the centrosymmetric geometry. We identified the driving force for the symmetry breaking as an intramolecular two-center three-electron bonding interaction between iodine and carbonyl oxygen in the (n,π*) excited state. Consequently, while the direct T1–S0 spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in TIPS-BrTn is symmetry-forbidden and zero, that of TIPS-ITn is non-zero due to the loss of centrosymmetry, thereby accelerating nonradiative T1–S0 decay to diminish the RTP. Importantly, the phosphorescence rate constant is not solely dictated by the direct T1–S0 SOC; instead, it can be rationalized by the intensity borrowing from higher singlet states. Thus, our work highlights the importance of controlling molecular symmetry, which could suppress the direct T1–S0 SOC and lead to a preferential acceleration of radiative decay over nonradiative decay for achieving efficient RTP.

Crystal melting by light irradiation, that is, the phenomenon of photoinduced crystal-melt transition (PCMT), can dramatically change material properties with high spatiotemporal resolution. However, both the process and mechanism of PCMT remain unknown owing to a lack of suitable probes and the poor diversity of compounds exhibiting PCMT. Here, we report the first instance of PCMT with luminescence evolution. We show that a heteroaromatic 1,2-diketone crystal exhibits ON-OFF-ON luminescence changes under continuous ultraviolet irradiation, which can be ascribed to the sequential PCMT processes of crystal loosening and conformational isomerization before macroscopic melting. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, thermal analysis, and theoretical calculations of three diketones revealed that weak intermolecular interactions and the presence of a disordered layer in the crystal are essential for PCMT. Our results provide fundamental insights into the melting process of molecular crystals and should aid the molecular design of PCMT-active materials that are based on emissive compounds, as opposed to the classical molecular designing based on nonemissive photochromic scaffolds such as azobenzenes.

Modulating the stimulus-responsiveness of a luminescent crystal is challenging owing to the complex interdependent nature of its controlling factors, such as molecular structure, molecular conformation, crystal packing, optical properties, and amorphization behavior. Herein, we demonstrate a halogen-exchange approach that disentangles this problem, thereby realizing the modulation of room-temperature phosphorescence-to-phosphorescence mechanochromism. Replacing the bromine atoms in a brominated thienyl diketone with chlorine atoms afforded isostructural crystals; i.e., molecules with different halogen atoms exhibited the same molecular conformation and crystal packing. Consequently, amorphization behavior toward mechanical stimulation was also the same, and the phosphorescence of amorphous states originated from the same conformer of each diketone. In contrast, the phosphorescence properties of each conformer were modulated differently, which is ascribable to heavy atom effects, resulting in the modulation of the mechanochromism. Thus, halogen exchange is a promising approach for modulating the stimulus-responsive photofunctions of crystals involving spin-forbidden processes.

This paper reports the synthesis of Fe(II)/Co(II) fused triphenyl porphyrin dimers as candidate of hybrid organic metal electrocatalyst. The synthesis was conducted in five-step reactions using the starting materials pyrrole and benzaldehyde. The fuse oxidative reaction was done via free-base form of triphenyl porphyrin to omit metal insertions/removals of intermediate products. This strategy is very beneficial for the synthesis of metal fused triphenyl porphyrin that needs less reactions where phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate) (PIFA) was successfully deployed in the oxidative reaction of two free-base triphenyl porphyrins. Here, the comparisons of NMR spectra were presented to see the changes of the starting material to the product. Initial electrochemical tests showed that reduction current of planar structure of Fe/Co fused triphenyl porphyrin dimer was on the potential range at -1.10 V to 0.45 V vs Au. Fe-fused triphenyl porphyrin dimer with 7.58 × 10–4 A (-1.05 V) showed slightly better performance than Co-fused triphenyl porphyrin dimer with 5.67 × 10–4 A (-0.97 V).

A highly selective carbon-carbon bond-forming transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to alcohol oxidation level has been disclosed. By employing a copper/bisphosphine catalyst system and hydrosilanes as mild and easy-to-handle reducing agents, various allenes can be reacted with CO2 to regioselectively obtain homoallylic alcohols. Esters and other reducible functionalities on the allenes remain intact during the reaction, whereas CO2 is reduced to alcohol oxidation level.

A regiodivergent silacarboxylation of allenes under a CO2 atmosphere with PhMe2Si-B(pin) as a silicon source in the presence of a copper catalyst at 70 degrees C has been developed. The regioselectivity of the reaction is successfully reversed by the proper choice of ligand; carboxylated vinylsilanes are obtained with rac-Me-DuPhos as the ligand, whereas the use of PCy3 affords carboxylated allylsilanes. Thus, two different carboxylated silanes can be selectively and regiodivergently synthesized from a single allene substrate.

The nickel-catalyzed double carboxylation of internal allcynes employing carbon dioxide (CO2) has been developed. The reactions proceed under CO2 (1 atm) at room temperature in the presence of a nickel catalyst, Zn powder as a reducing reagent, and MgBr2 as an indispensable additive. Various internal alkynes could be converted to the corresponding maleic anhydrides in good to high yields. DFT calculations disclosed the indispensable role of MgBr2 in the second CO2 insertion.
