This research project achieved the following: we consulted and deciphered various medieval paleographic documents mainly from “Pergamins municipals,” a collection of handwriting parchments held at the Historical Archive of the City of Barcelona. Accordingly, we identified a chain of historical events whose key figure was Romeu de Marimon, the vicar of Barcelona in the late 13th century. Our conference presentation revealed that the Catalan monarch assigned a prominent citizen―Romeu de Marimon―to the post of royal officer, or urban vicar, thus creating closer ties that led to mutually beneficial cooperation between the monarch and that prominent citizen. The sequence of events indicates that their ties and cooperation could create tensions between the monarch and the majority of the local oligarchy. We have not accumulated sufficient case studies to conclude whether the case of Romeu de Marimon can be generalized. We will examine this question as a future research topic.
