Abstract
Since the emergence of ChatGPT, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly integrated into society, making it essential to understand how individuals perceive and interact with it. Given AI’s inherent ambiguity and uncertainty, this study examines the relationship between attitudes towards AI and ambiguity. A survey of 554 Japanese participants was conducted using questionnaires, including the Attitude Toward Artificial Intelligence scale (ATAI) scale, which assesses two key dimensions: acceptance and fear, along with the Multidimensional Attitudes Toward Ambiguity Scale. Findings indicate that the Japanese version of the ATAI developed for the first time in this study, demonstrated strong internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and validity. Psychometric properties were supported by AI usage, willingness to use AI, and expected correlations with personality traits, aligning with prior literature. Text-based predictions using natural language processing reinforced this finding, showing significant associations with ATAI scores. This study is the first to examine how attitudes towards AI relate to ambiguity, revealing that Need for complexity and Novelty, and Discomfort with Ambiguity predict AI acceptance and fear. Absolutism positively correlates with both. These results indicate that attitudes towards AI are inherently complex and multidimensional, offering insights for effective and sustainable AI engagement as an ambiguous agent.

Recently, scholars have questioned the dominance of Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD)-centric values in shaping sociocultural systems. Addressing this requires reassessing instances where non-WEIRD values not only sustained but also influenced WEIRD paradigms. Advances in natural language processing now enable rigorous analysis of classical non-WEIRD texts to illuminate such contributions. This study examines Bushido: The Soul of Japan by Inazo Nitobe, a widely read classic that introduced Japanese moral values to Western audiences. Using Contextualized Construct Representations (CCR), we analyzed how Bushido conveys psychological constructs across cultural and historical boundaries referencing the Moral Foundations Questionnaire and HEXACO Personality Inventory. Bushido exhibited consistently higher CCR scores on both instruments compared to over 700 documents related to Christianity, the Bible, and Japanese culture, indicating closer semantic alignment with the target constructs. This suggests Bushido articulates moral values and personality traits rooted in Japanese cultural traditions, while exhibiting a cross-cultural psychological structure that transcends temporal boundaries. Multidimensional scaling further identified Meiyo (名誉) as the conceptual core among Bushido’s seven virtues, a construct distinct from Western pride-based honor. This study demonstrates that classical non-WEIRD texts can be quantitatively analyzed to reveal enduring moral frameworks that transcend the WEIRD paradigm.

While major world religions have long been the focus of psychological research, folk religions remain understudied due to their lack of formal doctrines and their embeddedness in daily life. This study explores how implicit religiosity is spontaneously expressed in language on social media, focusing on Japan. Over 7,000 Japanese and English YouTube comments on Apple’s 2024 “Crush!” ad—criticized in Japan for violating the belief that even inanimate objects possess a spirit—were analyzed. A combination of dictionary-based and topic modeling approaches was applied to examine emotional and religious content. Japanese comments lacked explicit religious references but frequently included culturally specific terms such as mottainai, linked to animistic values. These expressions co-occurred with negative emotion- and religion-related language. In contrast, English comments featured general emotional responses without spiritually embedded expressions. The findings highlight how computational linguistic methods can uncover culturally grounded forms of implicit religiosity in everyday language.

Alexithymia—a personality trait characterized by difficulties in recognizing and verbalizing emotions—is associated with various affective disorders. This study examined the relationship between the cognitive and affective dimensions of alexithymia, the multidimensional facets of empathy, and their association with the risk of affective disorders. A total of 391 Japanese participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing alexithymia, empathy, emotion regulation, and symptoms related to affective disorders. The results revealed that cognitive alexithymia was associated with diminished cognitive empathy and heightened personal distress, which in turn predicted higher levels of affective disorders. In contrast, affective alexithymia was negatively associated with personal distress and affective symptoms, suggesting a potential adaptive role in reducing the risk of affective disorders symptoms. Furthermore, while reappraisal is generally regarded as an adaptive emotion regulation strategy, its effectiveness depends on the level of alexithymia. These findings highlight the complex nature of alexithymia and its interactions with empathy and emotion regulation. Rather than providing a perspective on alexithymia as a maladaptive trait, our results suggest that it may have both adaptive and maladaptive aspects. These findings emphasize considering individual differences in emotional processing when examining mental health outcomes and developing interventions.

    Abstract

The structure and function of awe have been examined by focusing on the average level of outcomes during awe experiences. In the present study, we tested the psychophysiological process of experiencing awe, focusing on time-series changes in skin conductance responses (SCRs), a moment-by-moment measure of sympathetic nervous responses, and pupil diameter, which is dilated or constricted through the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The responses were measured through an experiment where 77 Japanese university students watched emotional (awe, amusement, or neutral) videos while moving a joystick when they felt supernatural agency or non-agency, examining the underlying psychological processes. We found that experiencing awe was associated with frequent and steep changes in SCRs and frequent changes in pupil diameter. The joystick inclination, the perceptions of the supernatural, was kept at a high level from the start to the end of awe experiences. These results may reflect the psychophysiological processes of awe: the “fluctuation” of the sympathetic nervous system might underlie awe-specific experiences. Our findings shed new light on the mechanisms of the body-mind interaction in awe experiences.

Background: Awe, a complex emotion, arises in response to perceptually and conceptually vast stimuli that transcend one’s current frames of reference, which is associated with subjective psychological phenomena, such as a sense of self and consciousness. This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Awe Experience Scale (AWE-S), a widely used questionnaire that robustly measured the state of awe, and simultaneously investigated how the multiple facets of awe related to the narrative representations of awe experiences. Methods: The Japanese AWE-S was created via back-translation and its factor structure and validity was investigated through an online survey in Japan. Results: The results revealed that the Japanese AWE-S consisted of the same six factors as the original (i.e., time, self-loss, connectedness, vastness, physiological, and accommodation) and had sufficient internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and also Japan-specific characteristics. The structured topic modeling generated seven potential topics of the descriptions of awe experiences, which were differently associated with each factor of the Japanese AWE-S. Conclusions: Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of awe and reveal the constructs of awe in Japan through cross-cultural comparisons. Furthermore, this study provides conceptual and methodological implications regarding studies on awe.

    Abstract

This study examined the relationships between positive/negative spirituality and meaning in life at two religious sites in Japan. Participants reported greater sadness and less meaning in life at Koyasan Okunoin, a temple with graves surrounded by nature, than at Nachi Kumano Taisha, a shrine with a waterfall. However, greater feelings of happiness protected meaning in life in the presence of sadness at Koyasan. Additionally, participants who felt a sense of awe reported greater meaning in life through self-liberation, regardless of the sites. The results provide new insights into meaning in life from the two sides of spirituality.

Threat-awe, a negatively valenced variant of awe, is thought to strengthen social ties among community members. However, few empirical studies have examined the social functions of threat-awe. This study investigated whether threat-awe is linked to interdependent worldviews through feelings of powerlessness in comparison with positive awe. After remembering and describing their experiences of positive-or threat-awe, 486 Japanese participants reported on items regarding a small self, a sense of powerlessness, and interdependent worldviews. The results demonstrated that threat-awe encouraged interdependent worldviews via an increased sense of powerlessness, rather than the small self, compared to the positive awe condition. From textual perspectives, the semantic networks between awe-related and other words differed from the descriptions of threat-awe and positive awe experiences. These results provide a more nuanced understanding of the emotions of awe as well as new insights into human cooperation in the context of disasters.

Awe is an emotional response to perceptually vast stimuli that transcend one's current frames of reference. Previous research indicated that awe promotes a smaller self, which led to the creation of a small-self hypothesis. Thus, we shed new light on this hypothesis in terms of sense of body ownership using a rubber hand illusion experiment; through it, we showed that awe evokes an increased sense of body ownership over the rubber hand and this effect was prominent among participants who experienced small self. Our findings suggest that awe might provoke a "liberation of the self" in terms of a sense of body ownership as awe has been thought to liberate existing schemas, hence informing the demonstrable implications of the psychological mechanisms of awe.
