Advanced optical applications of fluorescent carbon dots (C-dots) require highly integrated host-guest solid-state materials with a careful design of C-dots - matrix interface to control the optical response. We have developed a new synthesis based on the grafting of an organo-functional silane (3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, GPTMS) on amino-functionalized C-dots, which enables the fabrication of highly fluorescent organosilica-based hybrid organic-inorganic films through sol-gel process. The GPTMS grafting onto C-dots has been achieved via an epoxy-amine reaction under controlled conditions. Besides providing an efficient strategy to embed C-dots into a hybrid solid-state material, the modification of C-dots surface by GPTMS allows tuning their photoluminescence properties and gives rise to an additional, intense emission around 490 nm. Photoluminescence spectra reveal an interaction between C-dots surface and the polymeric chains which are locally formed by GPTMS polymerization. The present method is a step forward to the development of a surface modification technology aimed at controlling C-dots host-guest systems at the nanoscale.

The assembly of crystalline building units with specific shape-derived properties into aggregates is often required to broaden their practical applications because the properties of the building units can be fully integrated and used in the aggregates owing to their orientation. Herein, morphology-controlled BiFeO3 aggregates composed of oriented crystalline building units were fabricated via a hydrothermal process without any additives, and the effects of the supersaturation conditions on the aggregation state were investigated. The supersaturation condition, controlled by varying the KOH concentration, was found to affect the shape of the crystalline building units. For lower supersaturation conditions, the morphology of the aggregates was found to be closely related to the shape of the fundamental building units, and the results indicated that oriented attachment occurred between specific crystal faces of the building units. Under a high supersaturation condition, the morphology of the aggregate did not reflect the shape of the building units and a monodispersed spherical aggregate was obtained. Further, the internal microstructures of the aggregates changed from homogeneous and dense to sparse core and dense shell structures with an increasing supersaturation condition. The formation mechanism of these morphology-controlled aggregates is discussed using microstructure analyses. The present approach to control the morphology of aggregates using the shape of the building units and aggregation kinetics could also be applicable for other microcrystalline aggregated systems in addition to BiFeO3.

Carbon-dots (C-dots) nanocomposites represent a new frontier for highly efficient light-emitting materials with tunable colors in a wide range of the visible spectral region. We have developed a C-dots-ZnO system and the emission is finely controlled through material processing. The C-dots, besides being fluorophores, become a tool for modulating the defects in a ZnO matrix through chemical interactions. Macroporous ZnO films have been prepared via a hard templating route using mesoporous silica spheres which allows full crystallization of the ZnO framework and post-impregnation of large amounts of C-dots within the porous matrix. The photoluminescence spectra are given by a combination of different contributions: C-dots, UV near-band and defect-related ZnO emissions. The reducing action of the C-dots in the ZnO porous matrix allows engineering of the defect-related ZnO emissions. The chromaticity of the nanocomposite, from orange to purple and white, is controlled by adjusting the amounts of C-dots through post-impregnation.

A one-pot approach making use of a zinc oxide sol precursor and carbon quantum dots, together with a partially fluorinated block copolymer as templating agent, has been used to synthesize a porous matrix characterized by interesting energy transfer properties. The choice of the fluorinated surfactant for inducing the porosity into the inorganic matrix has allowed an easy removal of the templating agent at low temperature, preserving at the same time the functional properties of the carbon quantum dots. The resulting nanocomposite films have been characterized by steady-state 3D mapping that has evidenced a complex behavior as a function of the carbon quantum dots concentration. In particular, the luminescence bands of the zinc oxide matrix appear to be modulated by the broad emission of the carbon quantum dots, which depends on their aggregation state. These results can be thus considered as a step further toward the fine-tuning of the luminescence properties provided by zinc oxide-based nanocomposites as a result of a doping effect due to the presence of carbon quantum dots.

Micro-periodic structures exhibiting shape memory have been fabricated on organic-inorganic hybrid films. The microscale structures are obtained by forming wrinkles via buckling of the stiff surface layer. The surface-modified layers are obtained by surface photopolymerization or by oxidation of the hybrid films. The microscale structures are spontaneously formed by the shrinkage of the underlayer via gelation. The surface microstructures on titania- or silica-based films with hydrophilic swellable polymers exhibit a humidity response, i.e., a shape memory effect. This is observed when the surface microstructure disappears and is subsequently recovered with cyclic variation of the surrounding humidity. Micro-rolls are also fabricated by the selective swelling of surface-modified layers. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Stimuli-response on hierarchically-structured surface wrinkles is required for advanced filtration, catalysis and sensing applications. Although conventional processes can form hierarchical surface wrinkles, incorporation of stimuli-responsive features has not been achieved, limiting the potential multi-scale functionality of wrinkles. Here, we demonstrate a novel process that can fabricate stimuli-responsive surface hierarchical structures on silica-polymer hybrid films through precisely controlled UV-polymerization and sol-gel condensation. Starting from uniform hybrid films, UV excitation of the film surface triggers the formation of micrometre-scale wrinkles with dual periodicity. Hierarchical nested wrinkle (NW) structures with controllable periodic lengths at discrete size scales of &lt
    10 μm and &gt
23 μm show a shape-memory effect with changes in the surrounding humidity. Moreover, the individual responses of wrinkles with different periodicities can be controlled independently. As a proof-of-concept application, we demonstrate that the NW structures are an active size-selective adsorption/release surface for micrometre-sized particles.

Fluorescent nanocarbons, so-called carbon dots (C-dots), exhibit peculiar fluorescence characteristics derived from their structure. However, it is difficult to understand the cause of fluorescence due to the complicated structure and structural distribution of C-dots. Hence, in this study, the contribution of the surface structures of C-dots to their fluorescence was experimentally investigated. C-dots with different surface properties were synthesized, and the surface was functionalized with organoalkoxysilane to change the surface state of C-dots, and the correlation with fluorescence behavior was evaluated. The fluorescence was blue-shifted after functionalization for several kinds of C-dots with different amount of reaction sites, but the amount of shift was the same, suggesting that the partial structures involved in fluorescence are common even for C-dots with different surface states.
