Japanese is a required course of the English curriculum offered at the University of Tsukuba and consists of a 75 minute class 3 times a week over the 10 weeks of the AB Modules for a total of 30 class periods. Students of the Japanese 301 and 302 classes traditionally prepare academic presentations to showcase the progress they have made over the semester. During the 2019 spring semester iteration of the course, however, the final three class meetings were allocated to a speech project involving manzai , a form of Japanese comedy performed in pairs. This paper reports on the instruction and implementation of manzai , focusing in particular on pair work and attention to the audience. In addition, it discusses some apparent results of this type of instruction, including the development of improvisational abilities and nonverbal communication skills.

When having a conversation, speakers verbalize mental images by selecting a stored sign. This sign is processed in their memory through search, choice and extraction. In the current study, learners thought of related terms using a mandala-art-like method; a learning activity with as purpose to come up with words on their own. As a result, the author determined that the method to come up with related terms varies among learners. The majority of learners used a hierarchy taxonomy (classification) starting from a concept already established in their minds, i.e. a word they already know, while a minority of learners attempted verbalization via visual or auditory images. This paper first describes the learning activity. Then the thought process to obtain the end result and the changing learners' classification awareness are analyzed. Finally, the report considers vocabulary production ability improvement though the verbalization of mental images.

The Japanese grammar thatwas covered in the classroom took into consideration the effectiveness of the grammar for utilization in a practice activity in which the learners produced a movie. This paperreports on the classroom activities. A movie making activity was performed in the C module Global 30 Japanese classes in the fall semester, 2014. I analyze the grammatical items appearingin the movie that utilize basic grammar of "Japanese 2," a late elementary class held in AB module. It was thought that improve production, including writing scripts, would be difficult for Japanese 2 level students. The movieused grammarwhich was learned in the classroom, whichcan be quite different from that used in real life stimulations. However, it was foundthat many of the grammar items introduced in Japanese 2 were used in the lines of the movie. Based on this observation, it is thought that the value of the learning basic grammar in the classroom may be reconfirmed.
