Regarding the ideologically influential relationship between the international movement against trafficking in women and the modern Japanese movement against licensed prostitution, I have uncovered primary historical documents and analyzed their contents, particularly regarding the activities of Maurice Gregory, U. G. Murphy, and the Salvation Army, which were highly influential on Japanese prostitution regulatory policy , and presented my findings at an international conference and in papers. In addition, the research focused on the songbooks of Strike-bushi, and revealed in the paper that women in the licensed brothels were involved in the free cessation movement through the use of those songs.
For the purpose of international comparison, I planned joint research with researchers specializing in Germany, Eastern Europe, and the U.S., and I hosted open lectures and published the contents as a booklet entitled “The Modern History of ‘Sexual Management': Japan, Europe, and America". -

The purpose of this research is to clarify the condition of gender perspective in the process of establishing the single sex / co-educational schooling system in Japanese secondary education that has been restructured by the post war educational reform. After the WWII, several modifications have been brought in the secondary education, i.e. gender equality in educational opportunities achieved, and co-educational system institutionalized.
For that purpose, this research examined public high schools in 12 regions in the following two aspects: how the co-education has been realized, how the single sex education continued existing. The research revealed that each region had different historical and social background, as well as the policy of local military government. It became clear that such factors regulated the education of public high schools. -

In this study, I researched the reality of trafficking in women in the Empire of Japan in the Sino-Japanese/Russo-Japanese wars era. I revealed the formation process of Japanese modern licensed prostitution system which was the biggest source of the problem of trafficking in women in Japan at that time. I also made it clear how international activist groups got involved in the discussion whether to maintain the licensed prostitution system in Japan, and how the international anti-prostitution movements changed Japanese society.
As the study results, I published a book titled “Sei o Kanri suru Teikoku: Kosho Seido-ka no “Eisei" Mondai to Haisho Undo (Management of Sexuality for Imperial Expansion: “Hygiene" Issues under the State-regulated Licensed Prostitution System and the Movements against It)", Osaka University Press, 2017, and I compiled a book titled “Open Japan Closed Japan: Towards Interdisciplinary Studies in Human Mobility", Osaka University Faculty of Literature, 2017. -

In this study, I researched the formation process of the thought regarding anti-prostitution law in the Empire of Japan, focusing on the influence that the information about British movements against licensed prostitution had on it.
I was able to show how the Salvation Army and the World’s Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WWCTU) had an ideological impact and played key roles in creating the international network of movements against licensed prostitution from the late 19th century to the 1920's.
By examining historical archives from the UK and the USA, I tried to trace the way information regarding movements against licensed prostitution was transmitted between the British Empire and Japan, focusing mainly on the role played by the WWCTU on this matter and the subsequent differences that arose on the thought regarding anti-prostitution law. -

This study aims to clarify the forming of gender order concretely and in a demonstrative way by focusing on the reorganization of secondary education in the post WW2 educational reform. Since, after the WW2, the secondary education changed from the single-sex education to the co-educational system, thus the equality of sexes was achieved as of educational opportunity.
For this purpose, this study picks up 12 regions out of the whole country, examines how the co-educational system progressed or the single-sex educational system continued to be performed in public high schools in each region. As a result, it becomes clear that the public high schools are defined by the extent of the intervention of GHQ/SCAP, the situation of school districts, the number of private schools, and the awareness for the local education.
