This study explores the potential of renewable plant fibers as internal curing (IC) materials, analyzing their potential in high-strength mortar (HSM) applications. Experiments involving the incorporation of different volumetric ratios of luffa fiber into concrete assessed impacts on autogenous shrinkage (AS), mechanical properties, and microstructure. The research found that the addition of luffa fibers extended both the setting times of the mixture, and after final setting, continued the hydration reaction by releasing internally stored water. Compared to the control group, luffa fibers significantly reduced AS by up to 56.87 %, primarily due to their high-water absorption capacity (211 %), which mitigates the internal capillary pressures during the cement hydration process. Moreover, the inclusion of luffa fibers significantly affected the concrete's mechanical properties: a 1 % luffa addition enhanced the compressive strength at 28 days by 7.6 % over the control; concrete with 2 % luffa fiber exhibited the highest flexural strength at 28 days, showing a 9.4 % increase over the control. Microstructural analysis revealed that luffa fiber not only promoted continued hydration but also increased the content of hydration products and enhanced the compactness of the cementitious matrix. Overall, luffa fibers effectively reduce HSM's AS and enhance its mechanical properties and microstructure, showing potential to improve concrete performance.

Photovoltaic integrated shading devices (PVSDs) combine solar shading and electricity generation on building façades, thereby harnessing solar energy. In high-rise buildings, rooftop solar panels typically yield limited amounts of electricity relative to the energy demand of the building. Consequently, integrating PVSDs is crucial for advancing net zero-energy building initiatives. However, PVSDs may obstruct natural light penetration into indoor spaces, diminishing daylight utilization and potentially increasing lighting energy consumption. Moreover, they may compromise the visual connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. Therefore, designing PVSDs that balance energy generation, daylight utilization, and outdoor visibility is imperative. This study aimed to optimize the shape of PVSDs to effectively achieve these objectives. Specifically, the investigation focused on a PVSD composed of flexible solar panels integrated with curved louvers.

The methodology employed involved multi-objective optimization utilizing parametric studies and environmental simulations. Initially, three-dimensional computer-aided design models of PVSDs with varying shapes were generated by manipulating numerical parameters. Subsequently, key performance indicators, such as panel surface solar irradiation (IPV), continuous daylight autonomy (cDA), and visibility percentage (VP), were computed. Multi-objective optimization was then conducted utilizing the NSGA-II genetic algorithm. Through iterative adjustments of the input parameters, the optimal PVSD shape maximizing IPV, cDA, and VP were identified. The computational results showed that solar louvers with semi-circular top and rectangular bottom shapes offer the optimal configuration. Additionally, energy consumption analyses were performed for 10 Pareto solutions derived from the final generation. The finding indicated that solutions prioritizing IPV maximization resulted in the lowest energy consumption during building operation. This study provides valuable insight into the implementation of PVSDs in building applications and serves as a foundation for future design endeavors.

This study aims to propose a hydration kinetic model for the cement–eggshell powder binary system and predict the performance development of composite concrete through this model. The specific content and results of the model are as follows. First, based on the cumulative hydration heat of the cement and eggshell powder binary system in the first seven days, the parameters of the cement hydration model and the eggshell powder nucleation parameter are calibrated. These parameters remain constant regardless of the mix ratio. Secondly, the hydration heat of the cement–eggshell powder binary system over 28 days is calculated using the hydration model. The results show that at 28 days, for specimens with 0%, 7.5%, and 15% eggshell powder substitution, the cement hydration degrees are 0.832, 0.882, and 0.923, respectively. The hydration heat per gram of cement is 402.69, 426.88, and 446.73 J/g cement, respectively, while the hydration heat per gram of binder is 402.69, 394.86, and 379.72 J/g binder, respectively. Additionally, the hydration model is used to calculate the chemically bound water and calcium hydroxide content of the cement–eggshell powder binary system. At 28 days, for samples with 0%, 7.5%, and 15% eggshell powder, the chemically bound water content is 0.191, 0.188, and 0.180 g/g binder, respectively, and the calcium hydroxide content is 0.183, 0.179, and 0.173 g/g binder, respectively. Finally, a power function is used to regress the calculated hydration heat with experimentally measured compressive strength and surface electrical resistivity. The correlation coefficients for compressive strength and surface electrical resistivity are 0.8474 and 0.9714, respectively. This is because the strength weak point effect of eggshell powder has minimal impact on hydration heat and surface electrical resistivity experiments but significantly affects the strength experiment.

Increasing energy demand and its correlation with global warming underscore the urgency of exploring renewable energy sources, particularly solar power. This requirement is even more pronounced for mid- and high-rise buildings characterized by substantial energy consumption, necessitating the identification of optimal locations for solar panel installations. The purpose of this study is to develop an autonomously adjusted solar photovoltaic (PV) system for integration with solar shading louvers (adjustable PV louver system). Because the system can automatically adjust the angle of the solar PV panels by tracking the movement of the sun, electricity generation can be enhanced. To evaluate the performance of the adjustable PV louver system, we measured the amount of electricity generation with prototype model and developed a numerical analysis model for power generation calculations and a heating and cooling load calculation model. The major obtained findings are as follows: (1) Compared with a stationary PV louver system with fixed angles, actual measurement result shows that the adjustable vertical PV louver system exhibited a notable 7.3% improvement in daily electricity generation, whereas the adjustable horizontal PV louver system demonstrated an even more significant increase of 9.3%. (2) A parametric study involving the number of louvers was conducted to evaluate the influence of the shadows on each louver. The results showed that despite the presence of shadows between louvers, maintaining the number of louvers required to cover the window width resulted in improved electricity generation. (3) Heating and cooling load calculation for an office building in Japan shows that installing the adjustable horizontal PV louver system on window surfaces consumes the least amount of electricity.

This study utilized the Eulerian-Lagrangian method to investigate the risk of transmission of disease by tracking particles generated through coughing. The effects of ventilation rates (0.5, 5.0, and 10 ACH) and social distancing (0.9 and 1.8 m) were examined in a small office room using a displacement ventilation system. Numerical simulations considered different particle sizes (1, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 μm) to understand particle behavior and transmission routes. The airflow resulting from human coughing was validated with experimental data. Results showed that at a social distance of 0.9 m, increasing the ventilation rate led to a higher fraction of particles directly inhaled by susceptible individuals, potentially causing droplet and airborne transmission. However, maintaining a social distance of 1.8 m and a ventilation rate of 10 ACH significantly reduced the fraction of inhaled particles. Larger particles tended to deposit on floors and surfaces, while smaller particles remained suspended in the air. Higher ventilation rates increased particle deposition on the body surface of susceptible individuals, whereas increasing social distance reduced particle deposition. These findings highlight the importance of appropriate ventilation rates and social distancing in reducing the risk of infection transmission. Maintaining a social distance of 1.8 m combined with increased ventilation effectively reduced the fraction of inhaled particles. Larger particles were more likely to deposit on surfaces, emphasizing the need for regular disinfection. Understanding the dynamics of infectious particles and implementing effective ventilation and distancing measures can help mitigate the spread of infectious diseases in indoor environments.

Developing low-carbon cement-based materials is crucial to address the pressing sustainability concerns the construction industry faces. This study elucidates the effect of adding dry ice on the micro-meso-macro properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The main original points of the method were summarized as follows: simple operation, low technical difficulty, no specific equipment required, and solving the problem that the carbonation curing method is difficult to use in low water-cement ratio concrete. The results show that adding dry ice generates microscopic CO2 bubbles that react with the carbonation of Ca(OH)2 and improve the later-stage strength and electrical resistivity. And adding dry ice reduces the heat of hydration and promotes ettringite formation. The results of microscopic analyses confirmed that increasing the dry ice content results in a decrease in Ca(OH)2; hence more calcium carbonate is formed. It was also observed that the carbon conversion effect became more apparent when the curing period was 28 days. And optical micrograph analysis showed that adding dry ice increased the total bubble content of the matrix and decreased the average bubble diameter, thus affecting the change in macroscopic properties. Moreover, as the addition of dry ice increased from 0 to 15%, the CO2 emission per unit strength decreased from 6.5 to 4.5 kg·CO2·m−3·MPa−1 (30% reduction in CO2 emission). Therefore, adding dry ice to UHPC is an effective way to utilize carbon and is crucial to achieving carbon neutrality in the concrete industry.

There is a lack of scientific understanding of adding an oyster shell powder (OSP) to geopolymer concrete. The purpose of this study is: (1) to evaluate the high-temperature resistance of the alkali-activated slag ceramic powder (CP) mixture added with OSP at different temperatures, (2) to address the lack of application of environmentally friendly building materials, and (3) to reduce solid waste of OSP pollution and protect the environment. OSP replaces granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) and CP at 10% and 20% (based on binder), respectively. The mixture was heated to 400.0, 600.0, and 800.0 °C after curing for 180 days. The results of the experiment are summarized as follows: (1) The thermogravimetric (TG) results indicated that the OSP20 samples produced more CASH gels than the control OSP0. (2) As the temperature increased, the compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) both decreased. (3) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that the mixture undergoes a phase transition at 800.0 °C, and compared with the control OSP0, OSP20 undergoes a different phase transition. (4) The size change and appearance image results indicate that the mixture with added OSP inhibits shrinkage, and calcium carbonate decomposes to produce off-white CaO. To sum up, adding OSP can effectively reduce the damage of high temperatures (800.0 °C) on the properties of alkali-activated binders.

Under the influence of COVID-19, it is recommended to ventilate to reduce the risk of infection in the room. In an air-conditioned room, opening windows increase the ventilation rate that caused by indoor and outdoor temperature differences. However, there is a concern that opening windows in the air-conditioned room will increase the heating and cooling loads due to air leakage. In addition, it is difficult to maintain the adequate ventilation rate. To solve this problem, we developed an automatic window opening system to control the natural ventilation rate. This system can be controlling the adequate ventilation rate for the room by adjusting the opening area of window automatically. The purpose of this study is to confirm the effectiveness of this system and to understand its performance. In this study, analysis was done to calculate the adequate opening width in Japan, and actual measurements were conducted to understand the operating performance of this system. As a result, it was confirmed that sensible heat load due to ventilation was reduced with this system, and the ventilation rate could be controlled by this system.

This study investigated the pollution caused by unregulated chemical substances in Korean residential environments. A TA tube was used for indoor air collection, and Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry was used for the analysis of chemical substances. According to the results of this study, 13 substances out of the 16 analyzed chemicals were detected and, among them, the concentrations of phenol, α-pinene, and limonene within the indoor air were high. The average concentration of phenol was 32.7 µg/m3. α-pinene and limonene were detected, of which the highest concentrations were as 598.2 µg/m3 and 652.5 µg/m3, respectively. The maximum concentrations of these three substances exceeded the levels of the lowest concentration of interest. Notably, α-pinene and limonene were released from the wood itself. Wood has been widely used indoors as a natural building material and as furniture. Therefore, it was considered that this was the reason for the high the concentrations of the two substances in indoor air. However, we do not argue that the usage of wood should be reduced because of the results obtained in this study. Instead, we sµggest that it is important to reduce the emissions of α-pinene and limonene throµgh the processing of the wood, extending its drying period, and determining the most appropriate time of use.
