    Changes in surface and bulk structures of rutile titania particles induced by braying up to 10 d and post calcination in air at 773 K were analyzed by reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy. The observed energy-resolved distribution of electron traps indicated that the surface was amorphized by braying to give rutile-core amorphous-shell structure and the amorphous layer was partly recrystallized by post-calcination leaving grain boundaries in the surface layers, both of which may cause the observed markedly decreased photocatalytic activities.

    The effects of surface loading of iridium(II) oxide (IrO2), manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2), and cobalt(II) phosphate (CoPi) on the rate of photocatalytic oxygen evolution by anatase or rutile titania particles suspended in aqueous solutions of an electron acceptor, iodate ions, were studied by light intensity-dependence (LID) kinetic analyses. Although the role of these deposits has been reported to be a cocatalyst without showing results of any kinetic analysis, the present LID kinetic study suggested that the deposits may act as a "positive-hole capturer" for oxygen evolution, not as a cocatalyst for both metal oxides and CoPi. Further studies on the effects of loading amount, deposit types, titania crystalline type, and titania-particle size on the reaction order were also performed by LID analysis based on the proposed kinetic model. The observed LID behaviors could be interpreted consistently using a virtual parameter of "effective volume" as the target volume of photoabsorption by one positive-hole-bearing titania particle to govern the probability of two positive-hole accumulations in a titania particle.

    Light-intensity dependence of the rate of carbon-dioxide liberation in the photocatalytic decomposition of acetic acid by bismuth tungstate particles suspended in an aqueous solution under aerobic conditions was measured by monochromatic photoirradiation using a monochromator (lower intensity &lt
    20 mW) and high-intensity UV-LED (higher intensity &lt
    300 mW). The light-intensity dependence of both flake ball-shaped micrometer-sized particles (FB-BWO) and wet ball-milled nanometer-sized particles (ML-BWO) seemed to be bimodal, i.e., first and 0.5th orders in the lower and higher intensity ranges, respectively. Approximately 1.5th and second-order light-intensity dependences were also observed for ML-BWO at the lowest intensity range and for FB at the highest intensity range, respectively. The light-intensity dependences could be reproduced by a kinetic model that was derived on the basis of the assumption of oxygen reduction via two-electron (and possibly four-electron at the highest intensity region) transfer and a radical chain mechanism with peroxy radicals as chain carriers. The calculated threshold intensity between the first and 0.5th-order light-intensity dependences for FB-BWO was appreciably lower than that of ML-BWO, suggesting that the higher FB-BWO activity is attributable to the larger effective particle size for accumulation of two (or four) electrons.

    The light-intensity dependence (LID) of oxygen evolution using titanium(IV) oxide particles and electron acceptors under intense UV-LED irradiation was multimodal
    in general, the LID changed from second to first order, and then fourth order in some cases. Such LID-order switching could reasonably be explained using a kinetic model in which the probability of multipleelectron (positive holes) accumulation in each particle governs the overall rates digitally.

    Segment-structured diamond-like carbon (S-DLC) film, which is separated DLC films into small segments using metal mask, has been developed in order to improve its tribological property or accomplish multi-functionalized surface. Meanwhile, the S-DLC deposition by conventional methods using metal mesh as masks is difficult to apply to the three-dimensional substrates which have complicate curves. The purpose of this study is to develop coating methods for S-DLC deposition on the three-dimensional substrates like an aspect of the cylinder and a ball surface. In this study, we report the coating method using a robot employing six degrees of freedom (MOTOMAN-MH6: Yaskawa electric corporation) and a micro ink jet system (IJHB-1000 and IJHB-30: Microjet corporation). By adjusting the parameters applied to the piezoelectric element, the ink droplet was stable discharged. Then, small grid patterns were drawn on the plate. The substrate temperature is also controlled in order to make the drawn line thinner, because the resin ink is thermosetting material. Then, the DLC film was deposited onto the ink drawn substrate by a micro-pulse plasma CVD method using acetylene gas for 40 minutes. After the liftoff and the Raman spectroscopy measurement, we found that the resin ink could play a role as a mask material. Finally, grid patterns were successfully drawn on the aspect of the cylinder and a ball surface. In conclusion, it could be thought that this masking method could be used to various shape by complicating the robot programming in the future.

    Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have many excellent characteristics such as low friction coefficient, wear resistance, gas barrier property and biocompatibility. These many positive characteristics enable DLC coatings to be applied to a lot of fields from metallic materials to polymer materials for overcoatings. However, usual DLC film has a lot of micro-pores or pinholes, and those defects become problems as DLC film is not able to make the best use of abrasion resistance effectively due to the substrate corrosion. In addition, the DLC films deposited directly on the steel substrates often encountered the problem of poor adhesion. It has been attempted to overcome the negative effect by means of multilayer structure using metal and ceramic layers. In this study, we aim to deposit DLC films satisfied with both antiwear and anticorrosion characteristics. This time, we attempted to improve those properties by enhancing adhesion strength between DLC film and substrate. Interlayers used were a Si modified DLC (Si-C:H) interlayer deposited by using Si(CH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB> gas and a Cr interlayer deposited with magnetron sputtering method. These interlayered DLC films were deposited on austenite stainless steel substrates. DLC films with Si-C:H and/or Cr interlayer were deposited by a pulse plasma CVD method using C<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>2</SUB> gas. Three kinds of coatings: (1) substrate/Si-C:H/DLC, (2) substrate/Cr/DLC and (3) substrate/Cr/Si-C:H/DLC had been done. As fundamental tests, Raman spectroscopy, nano indentation, X-ray reflectometer analysis and rutherford back scattering spectrometry/elastic recoil detection analysis were carried out to reveal both mechanical and anticorrosion characteristics. Then, ball-on-disk tests and electrochemical measurements also had been running. These results lead us to conclusion that the effects of the DLC coating had been confirmed and an optimal structure to improve both tribological property and anticorrosion property was substrate/Si-C:H/DLC. Moreover, in the case of emphasizing tribological property, substrate/Cr/Si-C:H/DLC structure was recommended.

    Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have low friction coefficient against variety of materials and high wear resistance; however, DLCs are often damaged when the DLC film is distorted with deformation of the substrate. Segment-structured DLC (S-DLC) coating has been developed to improve these weak points of DLC films. The S-DLC coating is a technique to separate the DLC film into the small segments. The purpose of this study is to fabricate S-DLC film on stainless steel substrate and functionalize DLC films on the substrate based on S-DLC film. In this study, fluorocarbon polymer embedded segment-structured DLC (FC-S-DLC) film was fabricated by spraying fluorocarbon polymer into the grooves between the DLC segments. The DLC films were deposited by a RF plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Evaluations of tribological properties of these high-functional DLC films were performed under plane contact condition by pin-on-disk (PoD) test. As a result, the S-DLC film exhibited better tribological properties than that of continuous DLC film. Furthermore, the FC-S-DLC coating exhibited the most excellent tribological property among all samples and gave high wear resistance and steady friction coefficient to stainless steel substrates at a plane contact pressure of 0.16∼0.24MPa.

    Wear and fretting fatigue are important technological problems in automotive, railway and aerospace fields. The purpose of this study is to find a method of reducing the wear of cast-iron (FCD)/aluminum components, which are often applied to automotives, and thus extend their lifetime. First, a stainless-steel (SUS) shim was designed, which can be inserted between an FCD plate and an aluminum plate. Second, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings were applied to the shim inserts to prevent the FCD and aluminum plates from wear. Then, the tribological and fatigue characteristics of the shim were evaluated by a ball-on-disk (BoD) test and a bending fatigue test of up to 1×10<SUP>6</SUP> cycles. Each substrate was coated with DLC by Plasma-Based Ion Implantation and Deposition (PBII&D). A unique feature of our shim is that a segment-structured DLC film (S-DLC) is employed as well as a continuous DLC (C-DLC) film. The effect of the DLC coating on reducing the damage to the Al plate was apparent, because the surface roughness of the Al plate abraded with the DLC-coated shim was significantly smaller than that abraded directly with the FCD plate. Moreover, the average damage fraction to the C-DLC coating is approximately 20-fold larger than that to the S-DLC coating. The C-DLC film suffers severe damage near the bolt hole, whereas the S-DLC film suffered almost no damage even after 1×10<SUP>6</SUP> bending cycles. In conclusion, an S-DLC-coated SUS shim has a marked effect on reducing the wear of Al/FCD components and improving their lifetime.

    Novel materials with a periodic structure have recently been intensively studied for various photonic and photocatalytic applications due to an efficient light harvesting ability. Here, inverse opal titania (IOT) has been investigated for possible enhancement of photocatalytic activity. The IOT films were prepared on a glass support from silica and polystyrene (PS) opals by sandwich-vacuum-assisted infiltration and co-assembly methods, respectively. The reference sample was prepared by the same method (the latter) but with PS particles of different sizes, and thus without photonic feature. The modification of preparation conditions was performed to prepare the films with a high quality and different photonic properties, i.e., photonic bandgap (PBG) and slow photons’ wavelengths. The morphology and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV/vis spectroscopy, respectively. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated (also in dependence on the irradiation angle) for oxidative decomposition of acetaldehyde gas under irradiation with blue LED by measuring the rate of evolved carbon dioxide (CO2). It has been found that PBG wavelength depends on the size of particles forming opal, the void diameter of IOT, and irradiation angle, as expected from Bragg’s law. The highest activity (more than two-fold enhancement in the comparison to the reference) has been achieved for the IOT sample of 226-nm void diameter and PBG wavelengths at 403 nm, prepared from almost monodisperse PS particles of 252-nm diameter. Interestingly, significant decrease in activity (five times lower than reference) has been obtained for the IOT sample of also high quality but with 195-nm voids, and thus PBG at 375 nm (prohibited light). Accordingly, it has been proposed that the perfect tunning of photonic properties (here the blue-edge slow-photon effect) with bandgap energy of photocatalyst (e.g., absorption of anatase) results in the improved photocatalytic performance.

    A clear understanding of the electron energy structure of TiO2(B)/anatase is needed to study the related catalytic reactions and design new composite photocatalysts. In this study, the electron energy structures of TiO2(B) and anatase were estimated by analyzing the energy-resolved distribution of electron traps measured by reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy. In the mixture of TiO2(B) and anatase, interfacial charge-transfer excitation from anatase to electron traps of TiO2(B) was suggested. By analyzing this for TiO2(B), the electron level with a relatively high density of states was found to be located similar to 0.07 eV deeper than that for anatase. Furthermore, a similar electron energy structure was suggested for a composite photocatalyst having a mixed phase of TiO2(B) and anatase.

    Here we report identification of powders of titania, one of the most important metal oxides, with their energy-resolved distribution of electron traps (ERDT), as a fingerprint, measured by reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy (RDB-PAS). The ERDT patterns combined with conduction-band bottom (CBB) position data measured by ordinary PAS for various titania powders and other metal-oxide powders were different depending on the kind of sample. The degree of coincidence (zeta) of ERDT/CBB patterns was evaluated for a given pair of samples as a product of each degree of coincidence for ERDT-pattern matching, total density of electron traps and CBB position. Titania samples collected from close positions in a container exhibited high values of zeta, while samples with different code names showed low values of zeta, except for pairs of samples prepared in the same way but coded differently. It was shown that the higher was the values of zeta, the higher was the degree of coincidence for photocatalytic activity of titania samples. ERDT/CBB-pattern arrays arranged in the order of photocatalytic activities in three reaction systems suggested preferable patterns for each photocatalytic reaction.

    Facet-selective gold or platinum-nanoparticle deposition on decahedral-shaped anatase titania particles (DAPs) exposing {001} and {101} facets via photodeposition (PD) from metal-complex sources was reexamined using DAPs prepared with gas-phase reaction of titanium (IV) chloride and oxygen by quantitatively evaluating the area deposition density on {001} and {101} and comparing with the results of deposition from colloidal metal particles in the dark (CDD) or under photoirradiation (CDL). The observed facet selectivity, more or less {101} preferable, depended mainly on pH of the reaction suspensions and was almost non-selective at low pH regardless of the deposition method, PD or CDL, and the metal-source materials. Based on the results, the present authors propose that facet selectivity is attributable to surface charges (zeta potential) depending on the kind of facets, {001} and {101}, and pH of the reaction mixture and that this concept can explain the observed facet selectivity and possibly the reported facet selectivity without taking into account facet-selective reaction of photoexcited electrons and positive holes on {101} and {001} facets, respectively.

    In this paper, ZnO heterojunction with Ag2CO3/Ag2O mixed phase was synthesized by precipitation and phase transformation routes. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET specific surface area, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy along with energy-dispersive X-ray (TEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer to reveal their phase, morphology, purity, and optical properties. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained nanocomposites was measured by the degradation of phenol under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrated that, the heterojunction mixed phase of Ag2CO3/Ag2O over ZnO surfaces has major effect on establishing the performance of the phenol photodegradation process. It can be noted that the Ag2O crystal's growth over Ag2CO3 heterojunction on ZnO lattice, effectively facilitate charge transfer and suppress recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, leading to highest impact phenol degradation. The synthesized photocatalyst displayed excellent properties, showing a potential industrial application for the treatment of phenolic wastewater.

    Bismuth vanadate/bismuth tungstate (BVO/BWO) composites in various BVO fractions (f(V)) were synthesized through hydrothermal reaction. Morphology analysis of the composites showed that rod-like BVO structures were partially deposited on flake-ball (FB) BWO particles. In addition, surface structures of BWO, BVO and BVO/BWO were studied in energy-resolved distribution of electron traps and conduction band-bottom (CBB) position by household reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) and single-beam PAS, respectively. Apparent CBB of BVO/BWO was ca. 0.4â eV anodically shifted from BWO and almost similar to BVO. Moreover, photocatalytic oxygen liberation under irradiation of UV-vis and visible lights demonstrated that photocatalytic activities of the BVO/BWO composites were depended on f(V) and calcined BVO/BWO composites in which BVO was stabilized on BWO showed enhancement of photocatalytic activity comparing to a pristine BVO. The prolonged and the highest active photocatalyst under visible light was calcined 0.80 f(V)due to BVO stabilization on FB-BWO particles.

    A novel instrumental methodology, reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy (RDB-PAS), was developed for measuring the energy-resolved distribution of electron traps (ERDT) of metal-oxide powders. In the RDB-PAS measurement, electrons in the valence band of a powder sample are directly excited to electron traps (ETs) and accumulated in the ETs from the deeper (anodic) side to the shallower (cathodic) side by wavelength-scanned continuous light, and the increase in photoabsorption of electron-filled ETs is measured by modulated light at a fixed wavelength by PAS. It was shown that ERDT/CBB (conduction-band bottom) patterns measured by RDB-PAS can be used for not only identification and detailed characterization of a wide range of metal-oxide powder samples but also estimation of difference in apparent valence-band top (VBT) position.

    The mechanism of the formation of flake ball-shaped (FB) bismuth-tungstate (BWO) particles was studied with samples prepared by hydrothermal reactions under standard conditions (tungsten/bismuth ratio of 0.55 in feed; 433 K; 20 h) and other modified conditions, and the structural characteristics of the samples were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (composition and crystal structure), field emission-type scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) (morphology), focused ion-beam etching followed by FE-SEM (inner void structure), ultrahigh-voltage transmission electron microscopy (inner void structure) and low-voltage scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis (morphology and elemental distribution). Based on the results, a novel two-step mechanism of (1) formation of aqueous bismuth-oxyhydroxide droplets covered by tungstic acid (BOx@HWO) with fluidity and (2) reaction of inner bismuth and outer tungsten components at the BOx@HWO surface to yield BWO flakes is proposed as a one of the most plausible pathways that are consistent with the hollow structure of FB BWO and observations of the products prepared with shorter hydrothermal reaction. Photocatalytic activities of FB BWO samples in relation to their structure were studied.

    Titanium carbide/carbon nanocomposite hard coatings, which consist of TiC nanoparticles buried in amorphous carbon matrix, are prepared by a hybrid plasma process combining magnetron sputtering of a titanium target and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using methane as a source for the growth of amorphous carbon. A particular attention was paid to the comparison of the surface and the bulk chemical compositions of the films determined by different analysis techniques: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). XPS and EDS show an underestimation in carbon concentration compared to RBS and WDS which provide similar values. This underestimation is more important in case of XPS and it is mainly attributed to the presence of oxygen contamination on the surface of the films strongly bonded to titanium. In case of EDS, the underestimation is related to the poor sensitivity of the used probe in regard to light elements such as carbon. Moreover, the structure of the coatings has been extensively probed by transmission electron microscopy, which has shown that the size of the TiC nanopartides shrinks when increasing the carbon content within the films. We further demonstrate that this structural evolution has a direct impact on the hardness of the coatings which gets reduced when the grain size decreases. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.     We report the effects of antimony (Sb) doping on the electrical and optical properties of amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films grown on silicon and copper substrates by magnetron sputtering deposition. For film deposition, the mixture targets fabricated from carbon and antimony powders was used. The atomic concentration of carbon, hydrogen, and antimony, in the film deposited from the 1.0 mol% Sb containing target were 81, 17, 2 at.%, respectively. These elements were homogeneously distributed in the film. On the structural effect, the average continuous sp(2) carbon bonding networks decreased with Sb concentration increasing, and defects in the films were increased with the Sb incorporation because atomic radius of Sb atoms is twice larger size than that of carbon. The optical gap and the electrical resistivity were carried out before and after the Sb doping. The results show that optical gap dropped from 3.15 to 3.04 eV corresponding to non-doping to Sb-doping conditions, respectively. The electrical resistivity reduced from 10.5 to 1.0 M Omega m by the Sb doping. These results suggest the doping level was newly formed in the forbidden band.

    Diamond-like carbon (DLC) film has various micro-size defects like pinhole, void and particle. When DLC film is exposed to white light, light is scattered in all direction at defects in DLC film. In this paper, defects in DLC film are detected by observing scattering light from defects under dark-field microscope. DLC film has wavelength dependence of transmittance. Therefore, using its wavelength dependence allows to separate surface and inside defects of DLC film. This paper describes development of bulk defects detecting system using optical filtering and scattering light detecting. This detecting method of defect is nondestructive and easy, and applicable to DLC films as well as other coating films.

    Characterizations of diamond-like carbon (DLC) deposited on a polymer artificial tooth were performed. DLC films were deposited on dental parts made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) resin by dc-pulse plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) from methane. Wear resistance test results revealed that a DLC-coated resin tooth has a very high wear resistance against tooth brushing, and endures 24 h brushing without a marked weight decrease. Cell cultivation test results show that DLC plays an important role in preventing cell death. Moreover, a biocompatibility test using a rabbit revealed that a connective tissue in the vicinity of DLC-coated PMMA is significantly thinner than that of noncoated PMMA. The numbers of inflammatory cells in the vicinity of DLC-coated and noncoated surfaces are 0 and 508 cells/mm(2), respectively. These results led us to conclude that DLC films are an excellent material for use as the coating of a polymer artificial tooth in terms of not only high wear resistance but also biocompatibility.     A surface acoustic wave (SAW) linear motor is a kind of ultrasonic motors. The advantages of the SAW linear motor are thin structure, large output force, high speed, precise positioning and so on. On the other hand, the motor has a problem with wear of contact surface. The SAW linear motor consists of a LiNO<sub>3</sub> substrate as a stator transducer and a silicon substrate with distributed projections as a slider. The stator transducer material, however, is easily worn due to friction drive. Moreover the silicon projections may enhance the wearing. Lifetime of the motor is reduced by the wear of the stator. To solve this problem, previously, segment-structured diamond-like carbon (S-DLC) films have been applied to the stator transducer surface. Enough driving performance has not been observed yet by the stator with the S-DLC films. The reason of this problem was edge shape of segments of the S-DLC films. In this report, we propose a new preparation method to fabricate the S-DLC films with round edge. Trial fabrication of the structure, abrasion test for the driving surface and driving characteristic with the stator are also reported.

    Tensile testing of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film was carried out by using the originally developed nano-materials testing system (NTS) that consisted by a nano-materials tester and a scanning electron microscope. This experiment is the first step for the formation of graphene by stress-induced transformation of an amorphous carbon film. The study may lead us to new findings of unique properties in a transient state of carbons. Stress-strain curve of the DLC film showed that tensile strength and Young's modulus of the film were approximately 420 MPa and 110 GPa, respectively. To evaluate performance of the NTS, a nano-indentation test was carried out for the same sample. Mechanical properties obtained by NTS were mostly in agreement with that of the indentation test. These experimental results demonstrated that the NTS would be one of the effective testing methods to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of DLC thin films.

    Tensile testing of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) film, peeled off from the substrate, was carried out using a nanomaterials testing system (NTS) that consisted of a nanomaterials tester and a scanning electron microscope. The stress-strain curve of the DLC film was successfully measured with this system. The Young's modulus of the film was estimated from the S-S curve to approximately 110 GPa. This result matches the range of Young's modulus values measured by indentation. The execution of the tensile test in DLC films made clear that notch processing of the film was necessary because of brittleness. The experimental results demonstrated that the NTS would be one of the effective testing methods to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of DLC films. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Here, we introduce some studies on the synthesis and photocatalysis of various kinds of titania, including anatase, rutile, amorphous titania, brookite, and TiO2(B), which are most often used in photocatalytic studies. It has often been reported that anatase has higher photocatalytic activity. However, action spectra analyses revealed that anatase and rutile each show higher photocatalytic activity in different reaction systems. Moreover, detailed examinations of P25, which has been widely used as a defacto standard photocatalyst, revealed that P25 has high heterogeneity and that anatase, rutile, and amorphous titania in P25 behave independently when working as a photocatalyst.

    In this study, I aimed to develop an "anhydrous solid-gas-phase" chemical process that could be a breakthrough for the practical application of carbon dioxide recycles. I have focused on silver(I) oxide as a mediator that reacts with gaseous carbon dioxide, have tried to demonstrate “silver(I) oxide-silver carbonate-silver metal-silver oxide” cycle. However, the “silver carbonate to silver metal” process, which is the most important cycle, was not realized.

    The basic principle of reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy (RDB-PAS), enabling the measurement of energy-resolved distribution of vacant electronic states, electron traps, in the most of semiconducting metal oxides and carbon nitride, was clarified to extend the application of this method. Based on the measurement principle of RDB-PAS, the instrumental setup and measurement were improved and modified to obtain the results of conditions high-fidelity. The measurements were made on the wide range of samples to establish the quantitative measurements identicalness, similarity and differentness of sample pairs without using conventional analytical techniques and to characterize amorphous (non crystalline) and structures of solid samples, which have not been analyzed by the conventional techniques.

    In this study, confirmation of the production of carbon monoxide, which is responsible for realization of the proposed cycle, is an important step. Titania-based photocatalysts were prepared under various conditions and the state of the loaded metals was confirmed by XRD, XPS and so on. Photocatalytic activity was performed under various conditions, then, it is found that those photocatalysts discolored immediately after light irradiation. Although it could be confirmed that some kinds of reaction occurred, some problems were raised: the irradiation light source, reaction reactor, and the solid photocatalyst itself did not uniformly react due to anisotropic light irradiation. As a result, the target carbon monoxide production couldn’t be confirmed. and it was impossible to confirm clearly the state of the sample after the reaction.

  5. 超耐摩耗性ダイヤモンド状炭素膜の合成・評価及びその生成機構解明

    最終年度の平成24年度は,超耐摩耗性ダイヤモンド状炭素(DLC)膜実現の一手法として,まず蛍光顕微鏡とキセノンランプを用いたDLC膜の欠陥検出法の提案を引き続き行った.そして本検出法によりDLC膜のバルク欠陥を容易に検出できることを示し,さらにDLC膜の吸収波長依存性を利用することで膜表面の欠陥と内部の欠陥とを分離する手法を提案した.超耐摩耗性の実現には膜中の欠陥を低減させる必要があり,本手法は非接触測定法かつ膜表面からでは観察できない膜内部の欠陥について,製造現場で利用できる光学顕微鏡ベースの簡便な検出方法であり,バルク欠陥の検出に対する要望が増えつつある産業界に対する貢献は大きいと考えられる.ついでC_2H_2,CH_4,H_2を原料ガスとして気相中の水素濃度を変化させてプラズマCVD法によりDLC膜を作製し,膜の水素含有量,バルク欠陥量,比摩耗量等を評価することにより,膜中の水素割合が20atm.%程度の場合に,少膜欠陥量かつ高耐摩耗性を示すことを明らかにし,さらに高耐摩耗性DLC膜の膜構造を提案した.ついで修士課程時に遂行した「繰り返し微小すべり摩耗防止シム部材の開発」に関し,更なる信頼性を検証する追加試験をおこなった.今回はプラズマイオン注入・成膜法に加えプラズマCVD法も用いSUS301製シム上に連続構造DLC(C-DLC)膜及びセグメント構造DLC(S-DLC)膜を作製し,Al板,シム及びダクタイル鋳鉄(FCD)板を積層した試料について10^7回の曲げ疲労試験を実施した.その結果,S-DLCコーティングを適用することで,DLC膜の摩耗はC-DLC膜の場合の約1/50に低減でき,相手Al板への攻撃性低減効果も顕著であることを明らかにするとともに,膜のセグメント構造化による膜剥離の低減機構を提示した.前回実施の10^6回の曲げ疲労試験では,トラック換算で約3000kmの移動距離にしか相当しないため,この結果は開発したシム部材を輸送機器に実装する際に大変重要である.最後に,任意の3次元形状基材にテクスチャDLC膜を適用することを考慮し,従来の金網マスキング法に替わる7自由度ロボットとディスペンサで構成される描画システムを用いたテクスチャDLC膜作製法を提案した.そして,基材表面に沿って線幅約100μmの碁盤の目状マスクを描画し,DLC膜成膜後にマスクを除去することで,曲面を有する基材上にテクスチャDLC膜を作製できることを明らかにした.このテクスチャDLC膜合成法の開発によって,高耐摩耗性付与に必須であるS-DLC膜を3次元基材にまで拡張することが可能となった.
