本研究は高技能労働者の帰国移動の理論化と2段階の自己選択バイアスなどのメカニズムの解明に向けた知見の提供を試みる。留学選択では学校教員統計調査の2次利用を予定し、外国学位を持つ日本人大学教員のキャリア（職制や給与等）や属性の特徴を、国内学位を持つ日本人大学教員との比較から明らかにする。帰国選択では博士号取得者を大学教員の母集団と見なし、米国調査結果を用いて米国で博士号を取得した日本人留学生のうち帰国者のキャリアや同満足度の特徴を留学後滞在者との比較から明らかにする。また同調査の全留学生を対象として帰国がキャリアに与える影響を分析し日本人留学生の帰国選択によるキャリアの特徴を把握する。
