    Abstract

This study re-evaluates the theoretical approach to analyzing inelastic neutron spectra of hydrogen-containing metals and intermetallic compounds. Previously, these analyses utilized hydrogen quantum nuclear states, modeled as solutions to the Schrödinger equation. The potential surfaces in these models were approximated from the total energies derived from first-principles electronic structure calculations. The current study improves upon this method by employing more efficient and accurate treatments for sampling the potential surface. It utilizes symmetrically irreducible sampling points arranged on densely populated mesh grids for the first-principles calculations. A comparative analysis of the theoretical predictions with experimental spectra for hydrides of Ti2Sb and Ti3Sb, as well as a LaNi5 hydrogen primary solid solution, demonstrates that this approach is promising for elucidating the unknown local environments of hydrogen atoms in systems where the approximate potential well describes the hydrogen quantum states.

Neutron transmission experiments can offer a new type of highly sensitive search for time-reversal invariance violating (TRIV) effects in nucleon-nucleon interactions via the same enhancement mechanism observed for large parity violating (PV) effects in neutron-induced compound nuclear processes. In these compound processes, the TRIV cross section is given as the product of the PV cross section, a spin factor κ, and a ratio of TRIV and PV matrix elements. We determined κ to be 0.59±0.05 for La139+n using both (n,γ) spectroscopy and (n→ +139La→) transmission. This result quantifies for the first time the high sensitivity of the La139 0.75-eV p-wave resonance in a future search for effects of P-odd/T-odd interactions in (n→ +139La→) forward transmission.

We measured the spin-dependent cross section at a neutron-induced p-wave resonance using a polarized epithermal neutron beam and a polarized nuclear target. Our study focuses on the 0.75 eV p-wave resonance of La139+n, where previous experiments have shown a large enhancement of parity violation. The spin dependence of the neutron absorption cross section of polarized La139 and polarized neutrons determines the partial neutron width of the p-wave resonance. This partial width is a key parameter needed to determine the sensitivity of this system to possible parity-odd and time reversal-odd interactions beyond the standard model. Our findings therefore serve as a foundation for a future search for time reversal violation in this compound nuclear system.

Largely enhanced parity-violating effects observed in compound resonances induced by epithermal neutrons are currently attributed to the mixing of parity-unfavored partial amplitudes in the entrance channel of the compound states. Furthermore, it is proposed that the same mechanism that enhances the parity violation also enhances the breaking of time-reversal invariance in the compound nucleus. The entrance-channel mixing induces energy-dependent spin-angular correlations of individual γ rays emitted from the compound nuclear state. For a detailed study of the mixing model, the γ-ray yield in the reaction of Sn117(n,γ)Sn118 was measured using a pulsed beam of polarized epithermal neutrons and Ge detectors. An angular dependence of asymmetric γ-ray yields for the orientation of the neutron polarization was observed.

Aiming to establish an efficient and accurate method for determining the total angular momentum (spin) of compound nuclear resonances formed by the absorption of neutrons by atomic nuclei, a technique was developed to measure the circular polarization of gamma rays produced from polarized neutron capture reactions. A new gamma-ray polarimeter was developed as the device for measuring circular polarization, and performance evaluation tests were conducted. The results of the performance evaluation tests confirmed that the device has a sensitivity of approximately 2% to circular polarization. Additionally, the circular polarization of gamma rays produced by polarized neutron capture reactions was successfully measured at J-PARC MLF ANNRI.

We have developed a neutron beam spin-polarization device: a 3He spin filter, which is indispensable for the CP violation search using a neutron absorption reaction by nuclei. The 3He spin filter is a device to polarize a neutron beam by using neutron absorption reaction of polarized 3He nuclei. A laser system for polarizing 3He gas was constructed at J-PARC, and it was confirmed that a high 3He polarization of about 80% can be achieved. An angular distribution of gamma-rays emitted from the polarized neutron absorption reaction by nuclei and a spin dependent absorption cross section of polarized La and polarized neutrons were successfully measured using this device.
