    Abstract

    The conventional nuclear medical imaging, such as PET and SPECT, visualizes the accumulation of radioisotopes in the human body and has been widely used for diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. Perturbed angular correlation is a powerful sensing tool detecting local electro-magnetic environment and has been used for chemical analysis or nuclear physics research. The use of perturbed angular correlation in nuclear medicine is recently proposed and pH sensing capability with liquid $$^{111}$$In has been confirmed. In more practical applications, DOTA based radioisotope labeled drug delivery is common in nuclear medicine. This study aims to characterize the pH dependance of perturbed angular correlation in Psyche-DOTA chelated $$^{111}$$In with the custom ring-shape gamma-ray detectors. The observed transition in anisotropy of cascade gamma-ray emission can contribute to the detection of a specific phenomenon changing pH inside the human body.

    Abstract

    A rapid and simple tritium analysis method is required for tracer application and the quantitative evaluation of radioactive waste. In this study, we focused on cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS), which is an ultra-sensitive laser absorption spectroscopy, and developed a spectrometer for tritium analysis. A current modulation-assisted acoustic optical modulator switching method was developed in the prototype setup containing a 2.2 μm diode laser for accessing the 2ν<sub>1</sub> absorption band of tritiated water vapor. The benefit of this switching method was investigated using the Allan deviation and compared to conventional acoustic optical modulator-only and current-only switching methods. Using the prototype setup with the proposed switching method, CRDS of stable H<sub>2</sub>O vapor was demonstrated. The detection limit for liquid tritium water analysis was estimated to be 2 × 10<sup>1 </sup>kBq/10 μl for ten-minute measurements.

    Abstract

    Characterization of kW class quasi-continuous wave (a pulse duration of 10 ms) laser interaction with metal targets and those with metal oxide targets are presented in respect to the laser induced breakdown and the successive laser induced melting and evaporation coupled with a mechanical response followed by ejection of various kinds of particles and fragments. An experiment was performed using 0.3-5 kW fiber lasers coupled with a high-speed camera to observe dynamics of the interaction. Ejected fine particles with &lt;1 μm diameters and particles with &gt; a few μm diameters were collected using a cascade impactor and a home-made collector, respectively and these were observed with electron microscopes. Shapes of irradiation marks were observed with a digital optical microscope. We also measured total ejected mass from a target. The experimental results reveal that firstly the laser threshold intensity of the interaction with the meal target was lower and more stable than those with the metal oxide targets. Secondly, in the stainless steel targets, the dynamics of molten layer created by thermal conduction from the laser heated thin layer and successive particle ejection with less mechanical response by the adjacent solid layer are dominant processes, while in the metal oxide targets, the fracturing in the relatively deeper interaction region coupled with brittle material response having relatively large laser shot to shot fluctuation appears to play a significant role in addition to the laser induced melting.

    The recent Nuclear Regulation Authority evaluation report suggests that at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, the concrete shield plugs above the primary containment vessel (PCV) have exceptionally high radiation levels in Units 2 and 3, which may increase the risk of radiation exposure during decommissioning operations. During the cleaning and disassembly of such radiation hot spots, it is expected that a large amount of submicron-sized radioactive aerosol particles will be generated, which may influence the decommissioning operation. In the present study, laser cleaning experiments were conducted at the University of Tokyo Aerosol Removal Test Facility to simulate aerosol scavenging during the laser cleaning process. The facility can reproduce multiple phenomena expected in actual plant decommissioning, such as laser decontamination and simultaneous mist and spraying operations. Through the work, we have developed effective aerosol dispersion control methods and strategies based on the joint use of water mist and water spray to reduce radiation risk in either laser cutting or other means of decontamination methods. Preliminary laser cleaning experiments on various coated samples were conducted to assess the aerosol removal efficiency using water droplets and mist. It was verified that the proposed method effectively cleans the radiation hot spots during the decommissioning process.

    Imaging of 14C outside of the subject is considered to be difficult because it is a radionuclide that emits only low-energy beta particles. However, we found that bremsstrahlung X-rays form 14C could be imaged from outside of subjects and is thus applicable to in vivo small animal imaging. We developed a high-resolution low-energy X-ray imaging system using a (Gd, La)2Si2O7:Ce(La-GPS) plate combined with a flat panel photomultiplier tube (FP-PMT) for in vivo imaging of a mouse to detect the X-rays from a 14C solution administered. Without using a parallel hole collimator, accumulated 14C in the mouse’s abdomen was imaged in 1 min and dynamic in vivo imaging was possible although the spatial resolution was moderate. With a parallel hole collimator, 14C in the abdomen was obtained with a higher spatial resolution with a 60-min acquisition time. We conclude that in vivo imaging of 14C is possible by using the developed high-resolution La-GPS imaging system and may be promising for molecular imaging research.

    Mid-infrared laser absorption spectroscopy utilizing a high-finesse optical cavity enables high precision trace analysis of gas molecules. In particular, optical detection of radiocarbon (C-14) based on cavity ringdown spectroscopy using a quantum cascade laser (QCL) is gaining attention as an alternative to accelerator mass spectrometry. This paper reports a compact-packaged narrow-linewidth QCL system utilizing resonant optical feedback from an external V-shaped cavity. Based on frequency noise analysis, the derived laser linewidth is 44 kHz for 100 mu s integration time with the capability to perform seamless frequency scanning around 10 GHz. We installed this laser system within a table-top cavity ringdown spectrometer for (CO2)-C-14. A single-shot detection limit of 1.2 x 10(-9) cm(-1) Hz-1/2 leading to a detectable abundance evaluated from a noise analysis of 0.2 in fraction modern C-14 for a 10-s averaging time was achieved. This capability of rapid analysis for (CO2)-C-14 is suitable for various applications requiring trace C-14 analysis. (C) 2022 Author(s).

    For the safe decommissioning of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, acquiring information on the composition of radioactive nuclides as well as their quantities are required. While an analysis based on a radiation measurement is one of the effective tools, the trace detection of the nuclides with a long half-life as well as the alpha radionuclides is not feasible. For this purpose, mass spectrometry is generally used as an alternative, which requires an ultra-high vacuum system, and therefore rapid measurement/continuous monitoring on site is rather difficult. Substitutionally, the methods based on highly sensitive laser absorption spectroscopy with an optical resonator have a large possibility to realize the rapid analysis of radionuclides with a compact and transportable apparatus. In this paper, our recent progress regarding the development of a glow-discharge cavity ring-down spectrometer for the real-time nuclides analysis for the aerosol particles generated by laser processing is presented.

    We proposed a simplified image reconstruction method in 4\pi Compton imaging to determine the intensity and location of point-like gamma-ray sources. The proposed method can be quickly done by fixing an apex of each Compton cone to a center of a Compton imaging detector and using a lookup table of cone projection profiles for all possible combinations. Using a prototype CdTe array detector with the proposed reconstruction method, 4\pi Compton images for a 137Cs gamma-ray point source far from the detector were obtained. Also, the identification of a 137Cs point source in a plastic box was successfully demonstrated.

    Since there are many so-called finger print absorption spectra of molecular gas species, the mid-infrared
    (MIR) region is critical especially for spectroscopy. We developed a highly sensitive, high-resolution
    spectroscopy system in the MIR region using cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) with a MIR comb.
    We developed a wideband wavelength-tunable MIR comb source based on a high-power, Yb-doped fiber
    laser and the difference frequency generation (DFG) process. We successfully observed the absorption
    spectra of 14CO2 using our developed system, which is useful for such field applications, as pharmacology,
    biology, medicine, agriculture, and environmental monitoring.

    <p>After radioactive substance spread over a large area on Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011, radiation monitoring becomes essential. The handheld survey meter is typically used to measure the distribution of the radioactive substance. This technique is time-consuming and gives risk to the radiation workers from getting high radiation exposure. The combination of Compton camera and remote mobile robot is useful for remotely measuring radioactive substances over a wide area or in a high dose-rate environment in which the worker is difficult to access. Moving the Compton camera using the mobile robot is needed to get 3-D radiation imager from multiple viewpoint measurement data.</p>

    <p>In recent years, new method called "microdose study" has been developed to directly investigate pharmacokinetics in the human body using a limited amount of <sup>14</sup>C labeled candidate compounds which is less than 100 µg or 1% of the dose that yields pharmacological effects. Drug development costs are expected to be dramatically decreased by this new method. Since the required abundance sensitivity of <sup>14</sup>C analysis in the microdose studies is 10<sup>−10</sup>–10<sup>−12</sup>, Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) is presently used for this purpose. However, the high cost and limited throughput in <sup>14</sup>C analysis by AMS may prevent from wide expansion of the microdose studies to drug development. As an alternative method, we are developing <sup>14</sup>C detection system based on Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) for microdose studies.</p>

    A saturated absorption spectroscopy setup was developed and optimised for the characterisation of a home-built and a commercial Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI). The free spectral range of these FPIs has been determined with reliable statistical and systematic errors.     A simple external optical feedback system has been applied to a distributed feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB QCL) for cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) and a clear effect of feedback was observed. A long external feedback path length of up to 4m can decrease the QCL linewidth to around 50kHz, which is of the order of the transmission linewidth of our high finesse ring-down cavity. The power spectral density of the transmission signal from high finesse cavity reveals that the noise at frequencies above 20kHz is reduced dramatically.

    共振器強化型吸収分光は、超高真空を必要としない小型・可搬型の装置で迅速・簡便・高感度な分析が可能であり新たな放射性核種分析法の一つとして期待されている。一方、放射性炭素分析以外の多様な核種分析については未だ発展途上である。本研究では、原子状放射性核種やそれを含む分子の分析を目指し、共振器強化型吸収分光における2色共鳴吸収、およびその非線形吸収効果を利用し、様々な対象に適用可能でより同位体選択性の高い、高感度かつ高分解能な同位体分光法の開発を行う。
    共振器強化型吸収分光は、超高真空を必要としない小型・可搬型の装置で迅速・簡便・高感度な分析が可能であり新たな放射性核種分析法の一つとして期待されている。一方、放射性炭素分析以外の多様な核種分析への拡張については未だ発展途上である。本研究では、原子状放射性核種やそれを含む分子の分析を目指し、共振器強化型吸収分光における2色共鳴吸収、およびその非線形吸収効果を利用し、様々な対象に適用可能でより同位体選択性の高い、高感度かつ高分解能な同位体分光法の開発を進めている。このための具体的な実施内容として、(1) 共振器強化型2色吸収分光実証のための実験系の構築、(2) 共振器強化型2色吸収分光法による非線形吸収効果の観測・同位体高分解能分光の実証、(3) 放射性核種分析への適用性検討を2ヵ年の研究計画のもとで実施する。
    1年目である令和5年度は共振器強化型2色吸収分光実証に向けて、共振器強化型レーザー吸収分光の実験体系構築を行った。特に重要な要素として、分光用狭線幅レーザー光源、および光共振器を含む分光セルの構築を行った。また、次年度の実証実験に向けて、ターゲット物質とその吸収遷移に関して検討を行った。導入試料を分光上適する形状(気体状原子、または分子)に変換する手法として直流グロー放電を利用することを念頭に、共振器強化型吸収分光装置と組み合わせた実験体系についても合わせて準備を進めている。
    これらの成果をもとに、次年度は(2)の実証実験に取り組む計画である。
    今年度は研究計画の1年目として、次年度の実験に向けた実験体系の構築を行うことができ、おおむね計画通りである。
    今年度の成果として共振器強化型吸収分光法の実験体系の構築を進めることができた。次年度はこれをもとに、共振器強化型2色吸収分光法による非線形吸収効果の観測・同位体高分解能分光の実証を目指した実験に着手し、得られた結果をもとに放射性核種分析への適用性を検討する計画である。
    一方、2024年3月より6月までの4か月間にわたり、育児休業を取得し本研究の推進ができない状況にある。休業のタイミングから今年度の進捗に影響はほぼなかったが、次年度については復帰時点での進捗を考慮し、研究期間の1年間延長などの対策を検討する。

    放射性核種より放出される高エネルギー光子対の量子もつれ検出に基づく原子核-多分子相互作用プローブを活用した診断治療学の創生のためには、放射性核種と生体内分子との相互作用の解明が不可欠である。そこで本研究では、1.放射性分子の超高感度・精密レーザー分光基盤の確立、2.放射性核種・安定同位体で多重置換された分子のレーザー分光による生体内薬物動態評価法の開発、を行う。新たな診断治療用核種を用いた放射性分子の設計・制御との連携を通じて、革新的な診断治療学の創生の一助となると期待される。

    In this study, a highly sensitive laser absorption spectroscopy was developed in order to simultaneously analyze molecular species including long half-life radionuclides and various isotopes without complicated pretreatment and chemical separation, utilizing a mid-infrared optical frequency comb and a highly reflective optical resonator. Particularly, a linewidth reduction technique of a mid-infrared semiconductor laser was developed as well as a system of laser frequency monitoring and stabilization using the mid-infrared optical frequency comb. Finally, a successful demonstration of the acquisition of absorption spectra of multiple gas molecules was performed by combining these methods. This has enabled us to establish the basis for a technology to simultaneously acquire high-intensity mid-infrared absorption spectra of multiple molecular species including low-abundance long half-life radionuclides.

    An analytical method of radiocarbon based on cavity ring-down spectroscopy was developed for metabolites analysis. Suppression of baseline fluctuations by modulating the optical path length and separation/concentration of sample gas (carbon dioxide) by adopting adsorption columns were developed to improve the sensitivity of C-14 quantitative analysis. Using those techniques, C-14 analysis in samples fractionated by high-performance liquid chromatography was demonstrated. In addition, a La-GPS scintillator-based imaging detector was developed for in vitro metabolite distribution measurements. Imaging of bremsstrahlung caused by β-particles emitted from C-14 as well as tritium was demonstrated by using the detector. In vivo imaging of a mouse to detect the X-rays from a 14C solution orally administered was successfully demonstrated.
