Amagmatic Mylonitic Deformation of Mantle Peridotites from the Tosa Megamullion in the Shikoku Basin, Philippine Sea 査読有り Open Access

Mylonitic mantle peridotites exposed at the Tosa Megamullion in the Shikoku Basin, Philippine Sea, provide direct evidence for amagmatic ductile shear deformation of the upper mantle beneath a back-arc spreading center. Oceanic core complexes (OCCs), or megamullions, are dome-shaped structures formed by detachment faulting and occur locally along slow-spreading mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins, where they expose fault rocks derived from ductile shear zones in the lower crust and upper mantle. The Shikoku Basin hosts several OCCs, including the Tosa Megamullion, which formed during the early stage of back-arc spreading. In this study, nine ultramafic rocks were collected from the Tosa Megamullion using the submersible Shinkai6500 during cruise YK23-05S. Although all samples were highly serpentinized, several preserved primary peridotitic textures were composed mainly of olivine, orthopyroxene, with subordinate clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and spinel. Seven samples exhibit well-developed foliation and porphyroclastic textures dominated by orthopyroxene porphyroclasts, ranging from rounded to strongly elongated forms, commonly showing microkinks and undulose extinction. Crystallographic preferred orientations (CPOs) of three representative samples, analyzed using SEM-EBSD, reveal E-type-dominant olivine fabrics characterized by the (001)[100] slip system, with a subordinate contribution from C-type (100)[001] slip. These CPOs suggest deformation under non-dry conditions involving moderate hydration and/or elevated differential stress. These results indicate that the ultramafic rocks from the Tosa Megamullion represent mantle-derived mylonitic peridotites formed by ductile shear beneath the spreading axis and subsequently exhumed under strongly magma-poor, amagmatic conditions. The Tosa Megamullion thus represents an amagmatic end-member of the OCC formation in back-arc basins, dominated by tectonic strain localization rather than by magmatic accretion.

The Oman Drilling Project cored Holes BA1B, BA3A and BA4A into serpentinized peridotites in Wadi Lawayni of the Samail ophiolite, Oman. These mantle peridotites are crosscut by numerous gabbro, olivine gabbro and clinopyroxenite dikes that are altered to calc-silicate assemblages (hydrogarnet, diopside, xonotlite, vesuvianite and pectolite), chlorite, and phlogopite. These mineralogical assemblages are typical of rodingites. Xonotlite [Ca<inf>6</inf>Si<inf>6</inf>O<inf>17</inf>(OH)<inf>2</inf>] and pectolite [NaCa<inf>2</inf>Si<inf>3</inf>O<inf>8</inf>(OH)] forming as fibrous or acicular/radial crystals in milk-white vein-like are common in these holes. In contrast, only a few occurrences of these minerals have been reported worldwide. Bulk rock analyses indicate two types of altered dikes: chlorite-bearing dikes displaying enrichments in Mg, Fe, Mn, Ti, Cr, Ni and volatiles as well as loss of Na compared to lower crustal gabbros; and rodingitized dikes with enrichments in Ca and Na during alteration. Mass gains in chlorite-bearing dikes are consistent with intense mass transfer from peridotite to gabbroic dikes. These results are consistent with thermodynamic modelling showing a strong control of the peridotite-gabbro ratio on the mineralogy of the altered gabbro: wollastonite, pectolite, and vesuvianite present here are predicted to form in peridotite-dominated systems, whereas prehnite, epidote and pumpellyite not reported in the studied boreholes are predicted to form in gabbro-dominated systems. Fluid inclusions containing H<inf>2</inf> and CH<inf>4</inf> are observed in both primary orthopyroxene and pectolite. They indicate the presence of a carbon-rich reduced fluid during rodingitization. The xonotlite stability field calculated with thermodynamic modelling is indeed limited by carbonate formation as oxygen fugacity increases. The rodingites from Oman display numerous markers of strong fluid/rock interactions, including enrichment in mobile elements such as Na, K and Li, typically associated with seawater interaction and hydrothermal fluid transport. The presence of xonotlite, pectolite and phlogopite is consistent with the addition of external elements during rodingitization since the extent of the calculated stability fields of these minerals increases when adding Ca, Na and K to the system. High δ<sup>44/40</sup>Ca values in chlorite-bearing dikes (1.65 ± 0.09 ‰ to 1.91 ± 0.09 ‰), rodingitized dikes (0.28 ± 0.09 ‰ to 1.25 ± 0.02 ‰) and serpentinized harzburgites (1.04 ± 0.05 ‰ to 1.64 ± 0.06 ‰) reveals mineral-fluid fractionation of Ca isotopes and/or interaction of seawater with gabbro-peridotite samples.

The third ``Mineral Detection of Neutrinos and Dark Matter'' (MD$\nu$DM'25)
meeting was held May 20-23, 2025 in Yokohama, Japan, hosted by the Yokohama
Institute for Earth Sciences, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and
Technology (JAMSTEC). These proceedings compile contributions from the workshop
and update the progress of mineral detector research. MD$\nu$DM'25 was the
third such meeting, following the first in October of 2022 held at the IFPU in
Trieste, Italy and the second in January of 2024 hosted by the Center for
Neutrino Physics at Virginia Tech in Arlington, USA. Mineral detectors record
and retain damage induced by nuclear recoils in synthetic or natural mineral
samples. The damage features can then be read out by a variety of nano- and
micro-scale imaging techniques. Applications of mineral detectors on timescales
relevant for laboratory experiments include reactor neutrino monitoring and
dark matter detection, with the potential to measure the directions as well as
the energies of the induced nuclear recoils. For natural mineral detectors
which record nuclear recoils over geological timescales, reading out even small
mineral samples could be sensitive to rare interactions induced by
astrophysical neutrinos, cosmic rays, dark matter and heavy exotic particles. A
series of mineral detectors of different ages could measure the time evolution
of these fluxes, offering a unique window into the history of our solar system
and the Milky Way. Mineral detector research is highly multidisciplinary,
incorporating aspects of high energy physics, condensed matter physics,
materials science, geoscience, and AI/ML for data analysis. Although realizing
the scientific potential of mineral detectors poses many challenges, the
MD$\nu$DM community looks forward to the continued development of mineral
detector experiments and the possible discoveries that mineral detectors could
reveal.

The Peak Metamorphic P–T Conditions of the Sanbagawa Schists in the Shibukawa Area, Central Japan: Application of Raman Geothermobarometry 査読有り Open Access

The quantitative pressure (P)–temperature (T) conditions of low-grade metamorphic rocks, such as pumpellyite–actinolite and greenschist facies, are largely unknown mainly owing to the difficulty in applying thermodynamic methods despite their importance in understanding the protolith and metamorphism within subducting oceanic crusts. In this study, Raman spectroscopy was applied to constrain the peak metamorphic conditions independent of thermodynamic methods for the lowest grade part (chlorite zone) of the Sanbagawa schists in the Shibukawa area, central Japan, where research on metamorphic conditions is limited. The metamorphic peak temperature of the pelitic schists estimated by Raman carbonaceous material geothermometry was 307 ± 27 °C to 395 ± 16 °C, which increased towards the northern fault (Median Tectonic Line). Raman geobarometry using the quartz-inclusions-in-spessartine system on a siliceous schist sample estimated a peak metamorphic pressure of 0.78–0.94 GPa at 360–390 °C. These results suggest that the rocks in the Shibukawa area were subducted to a depth equivalent to that of the garnet zone in central Shikoku and were then exhumed without experiencing further heating. The combination of Raman carbonaceous material geothermometry and Raman geobarometry (Raman geothermobarometry) can be effectively applied to estimate the metamorphic conditions of low-grade metamorphic rocks independent of thermodynamic methods.

Intragranular to xenolith-scale water heterogeneity in mantle olivine: Insights into cratonic processes 査読有り

This study presents Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) mapping of olivine in mantle xenoliths from the Kaapvaal Craton, introducing methodological innovations for quantifying olivine water content. Our advancements include enabling direct Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) analysis of FT-IR-measured grains, and developing an automated calculation method to minimize serpentinization effects. This approach enables the calculation of the water content of olivine with high reliability and facilitates a point-to-point correlation between water content and crystallographic orientation. Analysis of garnet lherzolites (100–150 km depth) and spinel peridotites (∼60 km depth) revealed our method's effectiveness for olivine water contents above 40 ppm. Olivine in garnet lherzolites contained 40–210 ppm water, while olivine in spinel lherzolites exhibited contents below the detection limit, indicating heterogeneous water distribution in the Kaapvaal Craton mantle. We observed significant water content heterogeneity across multiple scales: intragranular, inter-grain, and xenolithic. Intragranular water content gradients up to 50 ppm were observed, with high-water olivine (>120 ppm) tending to show gradients aligned with crystallographic axes, suggesting anisotropic water incorporation and diffusion processes. Variations in water content between olivine grains within xenoliths and across different microstructures in garnet lherzolites were also noted. This heterogeneity likely results from complex lithospheric mantle processes, including localized metasomatism and deformation. These findings have important implications for understanding cratonic stability, mantle dynamics, and water-related processes in the Earth's mantle, potentially facilitating small-scale metasomatism or deformation without compromising overall cratonic stability.

Legacy of mantle fabrics preserved within heavily serpentinized peridotites in Hole BA3A cores of the Oman Drilling Project 査読有り

Crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) of olivine within natural peridotites are commonly expressed by pole figures for the [100], [010], and [001] axes, and they can be categorized into six well-known crystal fabric types: A, B, C, D, E, and AG. In this paper, we have studied olivine crystal fabrics preserved within serpentinized peridotites in Hole BA3A cores from the Wadi Tayin mantle section of the Samail ophiolite in the Sultanate of Oman, drilled by the ICDP Oman Drilling Project (OmanDP) as part of the Multi-Borehole Observatory (MBO). Hole BA3A cores mostly consist of serpentinized harzburgites with small proportions of thin serpentinized dunitic and mafic layers. Quarter slabs were obtained from Hole BA3A cores, from parts of the core in which the degree of serpentinization was slightly lower than the range of the average through the whole core (70–96 %). The mineral phases and crystal orientations in each polished thin section were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) system. EBSD mapping and data processing were then performed to reveal the original CPO of mantle olivine, based on the orientation of relict grains of olivine in surrounding serpentine that retain the legacy of mantle fabrics. As a result, we found that olivine CPOs in Hole BA3A cores were mostly characterized by A to D type fabrics typical of steeply oriented, late, relatively low temperature mantle shear zones in the Samail ophiolite, as opposed to A to AG type fabrics typical of high-T asthenospheric mantle textures. However, Hole BA3A cores preserve foliations subparallel to the crust-mantle boundary like some of the high temperature fabrics. This implies that the olivine fabric transition could have occurred during continued deformation at progressively lower temperature until mantle flow ceased within the lithospheric mantle.

Microstructural Characteristics of Sheared Gabbroic Rocks From the Mado Megamullion, Shikoku Basin, Philippine Sea 査読有り

This paper investigated the deformation microstructures of gabbroic rocks from the breakaway region of the Mado Megamullion (site YK19-04S-6K-1536), Shikoku Basin, Philippine Sea to constrain the processes that contribute to the mechanical weakening of the lower oceanic crust. The deformed gabbroic rocks are characterized by porphyroclastic textures consisting mainly of coarse plagioclase + clinopyroxene ± amphibole porphyroclasts and a fine-grained matrix of plagioclase + clinopyroxene + amphibole + Fe-Ti oxides ± talc. Based on macroscopic foliation development, the samples are divided into low- and high-strain domains. The low-strain domain shows weakly developed foliations and a granoblastic texture with partially preserved magmatic textures, whereas the high-strain domain shows well-developed foliation defined by monomineralic and mixed mineral layers and porphyroclastic textures. In the low-strain domains, plagioclase grains show similar crystallographic orientations and chemical compositions between porphyroclasts and surrounding matrix, consistent with deformation predominantly via dislocation creep and subgrain rotation recrystallization. Clinopyroxene porphyroclasts and adjacent brown amphibole at porphyroclast rims share similar crystallographic orientations, suggesting topotactic replacement of clinopyroxene by amphibole associated with fluid infiltration. In the high-strain domains, fine-grained plagioclase shows distinct compositions from porphyroclasts and fabric development with [100] aligned to lineation and (001) to foliation, indicating that grain nucleation occurred during deformation via fluid-assisted reactions. It suggests that the deformation could have been accommodated by a combination of dislocation creep and dissolution–precipitation creep. Fine-grained clinopyroxene within monomineralic layers exhibits a clear (010)[001] crystallographic-preferred orientation indicative of dislocation glide. In contrast, fine-grained clinopyroxene in polymineralic layers shows weaker or nearly random orientations, suggesting enhanced grain boundary sliding at clinopyroxene–amphibole interfaces. This behavior was facilitated by grain-size reduction, abundant phase mixing, and inhibition of grain growth by Zener pinning. Brown amphibole within the high-strain matrix exhibits strong crystallographic and shape preferred orientations parallel to foliation, suggesting syn-tectonic growth and alignment. Ti-rich brown amphibole formed synchronously with deformation through clinopyroxene breakdown at temperatures of 755°C–871°C, whereas Ti-poor green amphibole formed during subsequent lower-temperature (686°C–770°C) hydrothermal alteration. A comparison with the Godzilla Megamullion suggests similar fluid-mediated deformation processes are active in megamullions throughout back-arc basin environments. Our results demonstrate that melt- and fluid-assisted reactions, coupled with grain size–sensitive deformation mechanisms, contribute significantly to long-term rheological weakening and strain localization in ductile shear zones within oceanic core complexes.

We report an outcrop of tonalitic mylonite along the Median Tectonic Line (MTL) in the Ryoke Belt near Sakurabuchi Park in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. The mylonite has a foliated porphyroclastic texture with coarse (up to a few millimeters) feldspar grains in a greenish/brownish matrix. The strike of the foliation is approximately parallel to that of the MTL. The mylonite consists of plagioclase (locally K–feldspar) porphyroclasts in a fine–grained foliated matrix that consists mainly of dynamically recrystallized quartz aggregates, along with plagioclase and biotite/chlorite. The feldspar porphyroclasts contain quartz–filled fractures and have a asymmetric shape that indicates dextral shear. The quartz c–axis fabric has an intense Y–maxima with a weak cross–girdle pattern. These features of the mylonite fabric are similar to those of porphyroclastic mylonites, such as the Kashio mylonite, which occur along the MTL in other regions.

We conducted crystal-fabric analyses of peridotites within the Horoman peridotite complex in the Hidaka metamorphic belt, Hokkaido, Japan. Over fifty oriented peridotite samples were collected and analyzed for olivine fabric strength (J-index) and crystallographic preferred orientations (CPOs). The peridotites contained four olivine CPOs: A, E, D, and AG types. We confirmed that olivine CPOs presented a transitional distribution from E to A to AG type from south to north. Previous experimental studies have demonstrated that E type CPO can merge under hydrous conditions. In addition, magnetotelluric observations suggested that the subducting oceanic plate supplies pore fluid to the basal thrust in the region (the Hidaka Main Thrust). Therefore, we infer that the E type CPO was originated from a local water infiltration event. AG type CPO, on the other hand, was considered as a secondary product enhanced by the synkinematic melts in the northern (geological upper) part, combined with the pressure-temperature path inferred by previous petrological studies. Furthermore, we reconstructed the senses of shear strain using the microstructure and olivine crystal-fabrics. Then we built the tectonic history of the Horoman peridotite complex integrating the structural development of the Hidaka metamorphic belt.

Textural and chemical variations in peridotite induced by hydrous melt migration in mantle under the back-arc spreading 査読有り

This study presents the structural and petrological characteristics of mantle peridotites in relation to the rock-hydrous melt reaction found in the Hayachine ultramafic complex, NE Japan. We conducted sampling, microstructural observations, crystal-orientation analyses, and major element composition analyses of the major constituent minerals in the peridotites. We used 17 serpentinized peridotites that preserved better mantle textures. The peridotites are composed of lherzolite to harzburgite, consisting of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, amphibole, and spinel. The peridotites were classified into two textures according to olivine grain size: coarse-grained (ca. 2–3 mm) and fine-grained (ca. 0.3–0.5 mm). Fine-grained peridotites were newly found in this study and were characterized by aggregates of orthopyroxene and amphibole with a large number of spinel inclusions. Based on olivine crystal-preferred orientation (CPO), we found that the coarse-grained peridotites were further classified into Group 1 (A type CPO) and 2 (AG type CPO) and the fine-grained peridotites were accordingly classified into Group 3 (weak CPO). The systematic continuity in the chemical compositions of the minerals suggests that Group 1 peridotites partially melted to form Group 2 peridotites, followed by Group 3 peridotites, due to further reaction of Group 2 peridotites with hydrous melts. These textural and chemical variations in the peridotites could have resulted from rock-hydrous melt reactions under back-arc spreading and subsequent processes.

Effects of mineral mode and textural variation on the seismic anisotropy in lithospheric mantle: an example from Horoman peridotites 査読有り Open Access

We performed a numerical analysis of seismic velocities in mantle peridotite using the elastic constants and crystallographic preferred orientations (CPOs) of olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene. Proportions of olivine in the samples ranged from 50 to 100% mechanically, whereas the two pyroxenes ranged from 0 to 50%. We utilized three lherzolite samples from the Horoman peridotite complex for this study. As the quantity of pyroxene increased, the P-wave velocities in the X-direction (8.35–9.14 km/s) and P-wave anisotropies (5.51–14.50%) decreased in all samples. However, the S1-wave velocities remained relatively consistent, with Vs1 ranging from 4.79 to 5.15 km/s and Vs2 from 4.55 to 4.92 km/s. The maximum S-wave anisotropies decreased as orthopyroxene contents increased. As a consequence, non-negligible effects of pyroxenes resulted in the variation of seismic velocities, suggesting the orthopyroxene/clinopyroxene contents and their CPOs could be one of critical factors for evaluating seismic anisotropy within the upper mantle. Minerals are solid state nuclear track detectors — nuclear recoils in a mineral leave latent damage to the crystal structure. Depending on the mineral and its temperature, the damage features are retained in the material from minutes (in low-melting point materials such as salts at a few hundred °C) to timescales much larger than the 4.5Gyr-age of the Solar System (in refractory materials at room temperature). The damage features from the O(50)MeV fission fragments left by spontaneous fission of 238U and other heavy unstable isotopes have long been used for fission track dating of geological samples. Laboratory studies have demonstrated the readout of defects caused by nuclear recoils with energies as small as O(1)keV. This whitepaper discusses a wide range of possible applications of minerals as detectors for ER≳O(1)keV nuclear recoils: Using natural minerals, one could use the damage features accumulated over O(10)Myr–O(1)Gyr to measure astrophysical neutrino fluxes (from the Sun, supernovae, or cosmic rays interacting with the atmosphere) as well as search for Dark Matter. Using signals accumulated over months to few-years timescales in laboratory-manufactured minerals, one could measure reactor neutrinos or use them as Dark Matter detectors, potentially with directional sensitivity. Research groups in Europe, Asia, and America have started developing microscopy techniques to read out the O(1)–O(100)nm damage features in crystals left by O(0.1)–O(100)keV nuclear recoils. We report on the status and plans of these programs. The research program towards the realization of such detectors is highly interdisciplinary, combining geoscience, material science, applied and fundamental physics with techniques from quantum information and Artificial Intelligence.
