Sago starch (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) is one of the starches imported into Japan. Recently, sago starch has been promoted as a healthy type of starch because it is gluten-free and non-allergenic. This study aims to identify the factors affecting sago starch import demand during the period 1978-2017 in Japan by using a double logarithmic linear function. The study revealed that the price of sago starch, GDP, aging population rate and tariff-rate quota policy are significant factors influencing sago starch importation in Japan.

The distribution channel is vital in the sago business because it connects producers and consumers. In this paper, we identify the distribution channels of sago products and their functional classification. We found that the distribution of sago products, such as dried sago and roasted sago (sagu kotak), in East Java is classified as indirect distribution, which relies on intermediaries. Intermediaries such as distributors, wholesale agents, and retailers are primarily actors that directly coordinate buying, selling, storing, and distributing sago products from Riau and Maluku to consumers in East Java. In addition, our calculation showed that sago pudding has a highly profitable value-added process as compared to that of roasted sago.

Iron toxicity affects the growth and yield of rice plant. Overcoming the damage of rice production by iron toxicity requires furthermore researches from laboratory to field levels. Here, we study responses of rice genotypes to iron toxicity between vegetative stage in hydroponic and whole grow stages in the pot. The first experiment was hydroponic experiment using twelve rice genotypes which were growth in the Yoshida Solution with addition of 0.2 % of agar. Three level of iron was given at 0, 500 and 700 ppm. The second experiment was the pot experiment using alluvial soil added with 3.000 ppm of ferrous combine with four levels of potassium and the control on Cilamaya Muncul (tolerant), Inpara 8 (moderate tolerant) and IR 64 (susceptible). In hydroponic experiment, even though the symptom appeared obviously, the leaf bronzing score (LBS) of tolerant and sensitive genotypes were not different. Physiological traits were significantly affected by Fe treatment in all varieties. Then symptom and physiological traits were significantly correlated. Through the pot experiment, it was confirmed the tolerance of each varieties. However, we couldn’t see the correlation between the LBS on hydroponic and soil at this time. And the heading delay was new finding, but it depended on varieties. We also could see the possibility of potassium application to inhibit iron toxicity but still we need to explore how it works. Photosynthetic performance of sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) was evaluated in normal and waterlogged conditions. Net assimilation rate (AN), light response curve of net assimilation rate (AN/I) and pulse-amplitude modulation fluorescence vs. irradiance (PAM/I), leaf water potential, leaf chlorophyll content and leaflet area were measured. AN was higher in a particular period of waterlogging than in the normal condition. However, prolonged waterlogging (more than two months) negatively affected sago palm photosynthetic capacity. This was indicated by reduction in several photosynthetic parameters such as AN, maximum value of AN obtained at maximum irradiance (AN ( I max)), quantum yield at zero to 200 µmol m−2 s−1 irradiance (ϕ( I o_ I 200)), asymptotic photosynthetic efficiency (αo), and maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax). The plants experiencing waterlogging produced high qNmax and NPQmax values. Prolonged waterlogging period also caused significant reduction in leaf water potential (ψleaf) and photosynthetic pigments content. Normal soil conditions with a sufficient amount of water are preferable in order for the plant to generate higher photosynthetic capacity and facilitate stable sago production.

Photosynthetic activities of the sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) were studied to find out its sensitivity to changes in ambient air temperature. The minimum ambient air temperature designed for the experiment was 25–29 °C, while the higher end was 29–33 °C. Several photosynthetic parameters were studied to support our analysis in sago photosynthetic activity, including diurnal leaf gas exchange, assimilation rate vs. CO2 concentration, leaf greenness, leaf chlorophyll content, and photosynthetic rate vs. irradiance. We found that sago palm photosynthetic activity tends to be more sensitive to minimum than to maximum ambient air temperature. The plants exposed to higher air temperatures had dark green leaf color associated with higher rates of diurnal photosynthesis, chlorophyll content, and rubisco limited photosynthetic activity. They also exhibited higher trend in optimum irradiance absorption level. Consequently, maximum light energy dissipation occurred at higher temperatures.

A rapid quantification method for leaf sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) concentrations was developed using a compact ion meter. Leaf ion concentrations were evaluated for species of Vigna vexillata (L.) A. Rich. after two weeks of treatment with 0-200 mM of sodium chloride. To compare the ion extraction efficiency, extraction solutions of distilled water and ammonium acetate were tested. The ion concentrations of extracts obtained by both solutions were measured using an ion meter, and the values were validated using ion chromatography. For both extraction solutions, the ion meter values were highly correlated with those of the ion chromatograph. However, correlations between ion meter and chromatograph values were largely different for Na+ and K+. The rapid quantification of ion concentrations using an ion meter developed in this study was successfully utilized for evaluating differences in leaf Na+ concentrations, K+ concentrations, and K+/ Na+ ratio in species of V. vexillata.
