    states feel the Lorentz-like forces in the opposite directions. This is the origin for the emergence of the spin Hall effect. We define the mass-current and spin-current operators from the equations of continuity and calculate the spin Hall conductivity from the off-diagonal current-current correlation function within the Bogoliubov approximation. We find that the correction of the current operators due to the MDDI significantly contributes to the spin Hall conductivity. A possible experimental situation is also discussed.

    We demonstrate synthetic azimuthal gauge potentials for Bose-Einstein condensates from engineering atom-light couplings. The gauge potential is created by adiabatically loading the condensate into the lowest energy Raman-dressed state, achieving a coreless vortex state. The azimuthal gauge potentials act as effective rotations and are tunable by the Raman coupling and detuning. We characterize the spin textures of the dressed states, in agreements with the theory. The lowest energy dressed state is stable with a 4.5-s half-atom-number-fraction lifetime. In addition, we exploit the azimuthal gauge potential to demonstrate the Hess-Fairbank effect, the analogue of Meissner effect in superconductors. The atoms in the absolute ground state has a zero quasiangular momentum and transits into a polar-core vortex when the synthetic magnetic flux is tuned to exceed a critical value. Our demonstration serves as a paradigm to create topological excitations by tailoring atom-light interactions where both types of SO(3) vortices in the
    F=1 manifold, coreless vortices and polar-core vortices, are created in our experiment. The gauge field in the stationary Hamiltonian opens a path to investigating rotation properties of atomic superfluids under thermal equilibrium.

    We demonstrate coupling between the atomic spin- and orbital-angular momentum (OAM) of the atom's center-of-mass motion in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The coupling is induced by Raman-dressing lasers with a Laguerre-Gaussian beam and creates coreless vortices in an F=1 87Rb spinor BEC. We observe correlations between spin and OAM in the dressed state and characterize the spin texture; the result is in good agreement with the theory. In the presence of the Raman field, our dressed state is stable for 0.1 s or longer, and it decays due to collision-induced relaxation. As we turn off the Raman beams, the vortex cores in the bare spin |mF=1> and |-1> split. These spin-OAM coupled systems with the Raman-dressing approach have great potential for exploring new topological textures and quantum states.

    We predict the emergence of the valley Edelstein effect (VEE), which is an electric-field-induced spin-polarization effect, in gated monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (MTMDs). We found an unconventional valley-dependent response in which the spin polarization is parallel to the applied electric field with opposite spin polarization generated by opposite valleys. This is in sharp contrast to the conventional Edelstein effect in which the induced spin polarization is perpendicular to the applied electric field. We identify the origin of VEE as combined effects of conventional Edelstein effect and valley-dependent Berry curvatures induced by coexisting Rashba and Ising spin-orbit couplings in gated MTMDs. Experimental schemes to detect the VEE are also considered.

  14. Local density of states in two-dimensional topological superconductors under a magnetic field: Signature of an exterior Majorana bound state Reviewed

    We study quasiparticle states on a surface of a topological insulator (TI) with proximity-induced superconductivity under an external magnetic field. An applied magnetic field creates two Majorana bound states: a vortex Majorana state localized inside a vortex core and an exterior Majorana state localized along a circle centered at the vortex core. We calculate the spin-resolved local density of states (LDOS) and demonstrate that the shrinking of the radius of the exterior Majorana state, predicted in R. S. Akzyanov et al., Phys. Rev. B 94, 125428 (2016), under a strong magnetic field can be seen in LDOS without smeared out by nonzero-energy states. The spin-resolved LDOS further reveals that the spin of the exterior Majorana state is strongly spin-polarized. Accordingly, the induced odd-frequency spin-triplet pairs are found to be spin-polarized as well. In order to detect the exterior Majorana states, however, the Fermi energy should be closed to the Dirac point to avoid contributions from continuum levels. We also study a different two-dimensional topological-superconducting system where a two-dimensional electron gas with the spin-orbit coupling is sandwiched between an s-wave superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator. We show that the radius of an exterior Majorana state can be tuned by an applied magnetic field. However, on the contrary to the results at a TI surface, neither the exterior Majorana state nor the induced odd-frequency spin-triplet pairs are spin-polarized. We conclude that the spin polarization of the Majorana state is attributed to the spin-polarized Landau level, which is characteristic for systems with the Dirac-like dispersion.

    Coarsening dynamics theory describes equilibration of a broad class of systems. By studying the relaxation of a periodic array of microcondensates immersed in a Fermi gas, which mediates long-range spin interactions to simulate frustrated classical magnets, we show that coarsening dynamics can be suppressed by geometrical frustration. The system is found to eventually approach a metastable state which is robust against random field noise and characterized by finite correlation lengths together with the emergence of topologically stable Z2 vortices. We find universal scaling laws with no thermal-equilibrium analog that relate the correlation lengths and the number of vortices to the degree of frustration in the system.

    We theoretically study spin and charge transport induced by a twisted light beam irradiated on a disordered surface of a doped three-dimensional topological insulator (TI). We find that various types of spin vortices are imprinted on the surface of the TI depending on the spin and orbital angular momentum of the incident light. The key mechanism for the appearance of the unconventional spin structure is the spin-momentum locking in the surface state of the TI. Besides, the diffusive transport of electrons under an inhomogeneous electric field causes a gradient of the charge density, which then induces nonlocal charge current and spin density as well as the spin current. We discuss the relation between these quantities within the linear response to the applied electric field using the Keldysh-Green's function method.

  17. Spin Hall effect in a spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate Reviewed

    We theoretically show that the spin Hall effect arises in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of neutral atoms interacting via the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions (MDDIs). Since the MDDI couples the total spin angular momentum and the relative orbital angular momentum of two colliding atoms, it works as a spin-orbit coupling. Thus, when we prepare a BEC in a magnetic sublevel m=0, thermally and quantum-mechanically excited atoms in the m=1 and -1 states feel the Lorentz-like forces in the opposite directions. This is the origin for the emergence of the spin Hall effect. We define the mass-current and spin-current operators from the equations of continuity and calculate the spin Hall conductivity from the off-diagonal current-current correlation function within the Bogoliubov approximation. We find that the correction of the current operators due to the MDDI significantly contributes to the spin Hall conductivity. A possible experimental situation is also discussed.

    We consider magnetization configurations at chiral magnet (CM)/ferromagnet (FM) heterostructures. In the CM, magnetic skyrmions and spin helices emerge due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which then penetrate into the adjacent FM. However, because the nonuniform magnetization structures are energetically unfavorable in the FM, the penetrated magnetization structures are deformed, resulting in exotic three-dimensional configurations, such as skyrmion cones, sideways skyrmions, and twisted helices and skyrmions. We discuss the stability of possible magnetization configurations at the CM/FM and CM/FM/CM hybrid structures within the framework of the variational method, and find that various magnetization configurations appear in the ground state, some of which cause nontrivial emergent magnetic field.

    Gauge fields, typified by the electromagnetic field, often appear as emergent phenomena due to geometrical properties of a curved Hilbert subspace, and provide a key mechanism for understanding such exotic phenomena as the anomalous and topological Hall effects. Non-abelian gauge potentials serve as a source of non-singular magnetic monopoles. Here we show that unlike conventional solid materials, the non-abelianness of emergent gauge potentials in spinor Bose-Fermi atomic mixtures can be continuously varied by changing the relative particle-number densities of bosons and fermions. The non-abelian feature is captured by an explicit dependence of the measurable spin current density of fermions in the mixture on the variable coupling constant. Spinor mixtures also provide us with a method to coherently and spontaneously generate a pure spin current without relying on the spin Hall effect. Such a spin current is expected to have potential applications in the new generation of atomtronic devices.

    In ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), the quadratic Zeeman effect controls magnetic anisotropy, which affects magnetic domain pattern formation. While the longitudinal magnetization is dominant (similar to the Ising model) for a negative quadratic Zeeman energy, the transverse magnetization is dominant (similar to the XY model) for a positive one. When the quadratic Zeeman energy is positive, the coarsening dynamics is driven by vortex-antivortex annihilation in the same way as the XY model. However, due to a superfluid flow of atoms, there exist several combinations of vortex-antivortex pairs in ferromagnetic BECs, which makes the coarsening dynamics more complicated than that of the XY model. We propose a revised domain growth law, which is based on the growth law of the two-dimensional XY model, for a two-dimensional ferromagnetic BEC with a positive quadratic Zeeman energy.

    Quantum mass acquisition, in which a massless (quasi)particle becomes massive due to quantum corrections, is predicted to occur in several subfields of physics. However, its experimental observation remains elusive since the emergent energy gap is too small. We show that a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate is an excellent candidate for the observation of such a peculiar phenomenon as the energy gap turns out to be 2 orders of magnitude larger than the zero-point energy. This extraordinarily large energy gap is a consequence of the dynamical instability. The propagation velocity of the resultant massive excitation mode is found to be decreased by the quantum corrections as opposed to phonons.

    We apply the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory to spinor Bose-Einstein condensates and show that the Goldstone magnon causes instability leading to fragmentation. Unlike the dynamical instability, where modes with complex eigenfrequencies grow exponentially, here the zero-energy mode exhibits algebraic growth. We also point out that a small fraction of thermally excited atoms enhances the fragmentation dynamics.

    Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates provide a unique example in which the Bogoliubov theory fails to describe the metastability associated with first-order quantum phase transitions. This problem is resolved by developing the spinor Beliaev theory which takes account of quantum fluctuations of the condensate. It is these fluctuations that generate terms of higher than the fourth order in the order-parameter field which are needed for the first-order phase transitions. Besides the conventional first-order phase transitions which are accompanied by metastable states, we find a class of first-order phase transitions which are not accompanied by metastable states. The absence of metastability in these phase transitions holds to all orders of approximation since the metastability is prohibited by the symmetry of the Hamiltonian at the phase boundary. Finally, the possibility of macroscopic quantum tunneling from a metastable state to the ground state is discussed.

    Magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can induce spin textures, even though it is weaker than other interactions. The key feature of the dipolar interaction is that it is spin-orbit coupling interaction which conserves total angular momentum. Therefore, at extremely low magnetic field, an initially spin-polarized BEC starts rotating spontaneously. Moreover, spin textures develop in the ground state, leading to spontaneous mass current. Such dipolar effect should be observed in a spinor BEC of ^<87>Rb atoms.

    Magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can induce spin textures, even though it is weaker than other interactions. The key feature of the dipolar interaction is that it is spin-orbit coupling interaction which conserves total angular momentum. Therefore, at extremely low magnetic field, an initially spin-polarized BEC starts rotating spontaneously. Moreover, spin textures develop in the ground state, leading to spontaneous mass current. Such dipolar effect should be observed in a spinor BEC of ^<87>Rb atoms.

    We studied topological quantum phenomena caused by spin-orbit coupling. For Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of cold atmoic gases, we have discussed the spin Hall effect, BEC dynamics under a non-Abelian gauge field, and topological invariants defined in a non-Hermitian system, which arise from the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction or Laser-induced spin-orbital coupling. For solid-state systems, we have investigated transport phenomena and magnetic skyrmion structure caused by spin-orbit interaction originating from relativistic effects.
