    We revealed the mechanism of how and when the potential meaning emerges in the middle voice with se (reflexive construction) in Spanish. The construction which has a stable potential meaning stably is called "middle-passive," which corresponds to the English middle construction. According to the definition of "potential" in Onoe (1998), the most important factors for the potential meaning are the intention or the expectation of the implicit agent and the existence of the condition or the permissibility for the action to be realized. While the middle-passive construction is known as the patient/theme-subject construction, it is also said to describe the subject's property in the imperfect tense-aspect. In addition, it often takes an adverbial phrase of difficulty. We consider that this adverbial phrase induces the implicature of the agent's intention to the realization of the action and the property of the subject is construed as the condition for the action that the verb refers to. Moreover, we argue that the passive and impersonal constructions can also have the potential meaning when its tense-aspect is imperfect and additionally, the agent's intention is implied in the context when it has the place or time phrase that can be construed as the condition.

    It is known that the Japanese passive clitic -rare- also has an abilitative/potential meaning. However, the mechanism through which each meaning is construed has not been sufficiently revealed through previous studies. The clitic -rare- that emerged through the analogy of spontaneous intransitive verbal inflection, resulted in inheriting the spontaneity in the meaning, as many studies has argued. However, at the same time the -rare- sentence is closely connected to the speaker's standpoint, which is a crucial factor in explaining the meanings of a sentence with -rare- usage. A sentence such as "Kono sakana wa nama de tabe-rare-ru. (this fish is/can be eaten raw)" is construed as passive when we describe/construe it in a neutral standpoint. Meanwhile, the same sentence can be construed as abilitative/potential when we refer to it from the standpoint of the agent who hopes or intends to realize the event that is referred to by the verb. The construction where the passive and abilitative/potential meanings interact most frequently is the inanimate-theme subject type, especially when the agent is a generic person as well as defocused.

    いわゆる「ジャンル」と「文法」の関係は，古くて新しい，常に問い直されている問題である。ジャンル（テクストタイプ・文体・レジスターなど）は，運用上の条件を象徴する類型として，日本語の文法を揺るがし，形づくり，とどめてきた。またその一方，文法（文タイプ）の中にはジャンル特有のものもあり，こうした文の意味・機能がジャンルの性質（そのジャンルらしさ）にも寄与している。様々な「ジャンル」へのまなざしから，日本語の文法や構文・文型との関わりについて自由に発題をいただき，文体と文法の関係を改めて考えてみたい。

    We demonstrated that the reason behind the absence of the agent-defocusing passive (inanimate subject passive) is that Japanese developed the non-volitional/potential construction with “rare” in the area where other languages have developed the agent-defocusing passive. Contrasting the voice system in Early Middle Japanese with the Spanish middle voice system (reflexive construction), we can observe that both languages have extended the grammatical voice construction from the spontaneous intransitive construction. However while the Spanish middle voice established the agent-defocusing passive which signifies that "the event (is caused to) occurs by someone", the Japanese "rare" established the non-volitional/potential construction, expressing that "the event occurs spontaneously to someone."
