I studied how oxytocin, a neuropeptide often called the “love hormone”, acts in the brain to affect autonomic physiological functions, such as body temperature regulation and stress-coping responses. By employing in vivo optogenetic techniques to selectively stimulate a group of oxytocin neurons in the hypothalamus together with other anatomical and physiological techniques, I identified an oxytocinergic neuronal pathway that stimulates brown adipose tissue thermogenesis and tachycardia.

Members of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas ‘Thermal Biology’ lead the researches regarding temperature sensation and temperature response systems including development of temperature detection and control devices with high resolution and accuracy within the cells and organs. They performed international collaboration researches about thermal biology with 48 institutes in 20 countries, and made 136 presentations and published 47 international papers. In addition, Thermal Biology Training Course was organized in Okazaki in April, 2019. Our research teams could lead the international thermal biology researches with superiority by these coordinated international collaborations.

Thermal homeostasis, which is the nature to maintain internal body temperature within a narrow range, is particularly essential for homeothermic animals including humans, because all biological reactions and functions are affected by temperature. This study was performed to elucidate the neural circuit mechanisms underlying autonomic and behavioral controls of body temperature and metabolism. Specifically, we succeeded in the discoveries of the central ascending neural pathways that transmit thermosensory information for behavioral thermoregulation, the central circuit mechanism that drives hunger responses, and the central psychosomatic mechanism that connects the brain circuits processing psychological stress and emotion with those controlling vital functions. These circuit mechanisms we discovered not only underlie thermal homeostasis, but also function for the defence of life from a variety of environmental stressors.
