In this paper, we propose a Virtual Machine (VM) migration method that maximizes the total accuracy in a multistage information processing system, under the constraint that the given ratio of tasks satisfy the constraint of improving the given level of accuracy (i.e., progress in information processing) within a required response time. Conventional methods only aim to improve the total accuracy and do not consider achieving the given level of accuracy for each task. The proposed method aims to improve the ratio of tasks that can satisfy the given level of accuracy by balancing the load among edge servers as much as possible. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, we set the given level of task accuracy and evaluate the total accuracy by varying the number of VMs present in the system. The evaluation results show that the proposed method improves the number of VMs satisfying the given level of accuracy by 120% and the total accuracy by up to approximately 13% compared to the case without VM migration.

In this study, we will verify whether the relay node travel route control method is effective in actual experiments. When an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) requires high-Throughput wireless LAN communication during its travel, a system has been proposed to configure an ad hoc network that uses other AMRs (hereafter referred to as nodes) for data relay. Optimal routing control methods have already been proposed to enable relay nodes that relay data to communicate at high throughput. The proposed control method uses a computational model with a simple function, and its effectiveness has been demonstrated. However, the issue is to verify the effectiveness in a real communication environment. Therefore, we conducted experiments on actual equipment and compared the calculated results with the experimental results on actual equipment. The difference between the calculated results and the actual environment was limited to 18 points at most. Therefore, we have shown that the proposed path control method is effective.

In this paper, we consider a quality control of body-To-body networks (BBN) communication, which is communication between WBANs, in a situation where multiple WBANs coexist and have mutual interference. In multiple WBANs using the same channel, interference between WBANs and throughput of BBN communication depend on the distance between WBANs. Based on the communication characteristic, we propose a strategy where we move people with WBANs. Unlike conventional methods, the proposed strategy maximizes the throughput of BBN and mitigates interference between WBANs with no additional costs such as modification of protocols or hard/software. Our evaluation result showed that the proposed strategy provides the optimal location which can improve throughput of BBN by 58% than the initial location while satisfying the minimum performance of Intra-WBAN required by the user.

To achieve higher throughput communication in a forest, we construct communication environment using IEEE802.11 ad-hoc networks from points where LTE/5G reach. We propose the construction method of ad-hoc networks to change a path depending on tree density. When tree density is low, attenuation is considered to be low, and the NLOS Shortest Path which ignores the obstacles is effective. When tree density is high, attenuation will be also high, and the LOS Detour Path which relay APs and avoid obstacles should be used. We have demonstrated it in experiments. The NLOS Shortest Path was 22.6 Mbps higher at low tree density (625 trees/ha). In contrast, the LOS Detour Path was 5.8 Mbps higher at high tree density (1903 trees/ha). We confirmed that the effective path differs depending on tree density. In addition, we evaluated how much throughput could be obtained at a large communication range required for actual operation. The result was 5.12 Mbps at 288 m even with reasonably high tree density (1308 trees/ha). This experimental result indicates the possibility of obtaining enough high throughput to use video communication service in a forest.

We propose a relay AP movement control method for ad-hoc networks where the APs constitute a mobile infrastructure that responds to hotspot position changes under movement constraints. The proposed method moves the relay AP to an optimal position while considering the constraints of movable position. We consider a virtual spring to the spring model to apply the movement constraints. The proposed method uses a spring model after placing virtual terminals and APs at positions symmetrical to the axis of the movement of the relay AP. We evaluated the proposed method assuming a mesh network with terminals along roads. To clarify the impact of the road widths, we varied the road width and the amount of terminal traffic from the initial placement for our evaluation. This is because the effect of road width cannot be ignored due to the short transmission distance of IEEE802.11. The position of terminal movement in the spring model highly depends on the overflow conditions of the communication link. The evaluation results showed that the throughput degradation from the optimum position is reduced by 24% compared to the extended conventional method, which moves the terminal freely and then moves it within the movement constraint when the road width is 23 m. Compared to the optimal position, the proposed method degraded the throughput by about 8% and achieved near-optimal relay AP movement control.

To estimate available bandwidth of high-speed lines with high accuracy, we propose PathRefiner, a bandwidth estimation method with two techniques: (1) packet concatenation technique(2) iterative resolution refinement technique. It is one of the so-called packet train methods that estimate available bandwidth by transmitting multiple probing packets. (1) The packet concatenation technique virtually generates large packets necessary for estimating available bandwidth on high-speed lines by concatenating multiple packets of MTU size or smaller. (2) The iterative resolution refinement technique improves the resolution of estimation and enables highly accurate estimation of available bandwidth while minimizing the network load for estimation by finding the optimal number of large-sized virtual packets to be concatenated. As a result, the average value of the relative error between the ground truth and the estimated available bandwidth is relatively small (14.4%), confirming that PathRefiner can accurately estimate the available bandwidth of 1 Gbps high-speed lines.

In this paper, we propose PathRakeTCP, a method to estimate available bandwidth even if there are firewalls on the communication path that reject UDP communication. PathRakeTCP is one of the so-called packet train methods that estimates the available bandwidth by transmitting multiple probing packets. Firewalls often allow TCP communication to pass through. PathRakeTCP can pass through the firewalls because the packet train is composed of TCP packets. Many conventional packet train methods use UDP packets, which allow precise control over the transmission timing of each probing packet. This is because precise transmission timing control is essential for accurate available bandwidth estimation. On the other hand, if a packet train of TCP packets is simply transmitted, the transmission timing of each probing packet will be disrupted by TCP congestion control. This is a new problem not encountered in the conventional methods that use UDP packets. To solve the above problem, PathRakeTCP establishes a TCP connection for each probing packet and transmits only one packet at each TCP connection. To demonstrate that PathRakeTCP can precisely control the transmission timing of each TCP packet, an experimental evaluation is conducted with a real testbed. The experimental results show that the estimation error of PathRakeTCP is comparable to that of the packet train method with UDP packets.

This paper proposes an optimal dynamic transmission power allocation mechanism for multiple users to maximize mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) energy efficiency. With the widespread adoption of the internet of things (IoT), energy efficiency is a crucial metric in MANETs constrained by the battery capacity of portable devices. Specifically, a practical scheme needs to be explored that ensures the quality of service (QoS) while minimizing battery costs. Previous studies mainly focus on designing power-manageable components and achieving predictive mechanisms at the circuit or system layer. In contrast to the traditional approaches, we jointly consider power management and multiuser cooperative mobility for energy efficiency maximization. On the one hand, we formulate the dynamic power allocation schemes with multiuser cooperative mobility strategies into the infinite-horizon time average problems. On the other hand, an algorithm based on Lyapunov optimization is developed to obtain the optimum, i.e., dynamic power allocation based on the multiuser cooperative mobility (DPA-MCM) algorithm. Numerical simulations show that the proposed algorithm improves the energy efficiency by up to 27.84 % compared to the previous method, demonstrating the effectiveness.

For multi-transmission rate environments, access point (AP) connection methods have been proposed for maximizing system throughput, which is the throughput of an entire system, on the basis of the cooperative behavior of users. These methods derive optimal positions for the cooperative behavior of users, which means that new users move to improve the system throughput when connecting to an AP. Typically, the arrival of two or more new users causes signal interference for other users. Specifically, traditional methods have not considered interference and the number of allowable mobile positions is so large that it is difficult to find the optimal position to maximize system throughput. In this paper, we propose an AP connection method that maximizes system throughput by considering interference between users, with a potential game model. This game can find at least one optimal user position. Moreover, numerical analyses show the effectiveness of our method.

Current IaaS (infrastructure as a service) cloud service may not satisfy communication QoS (quality of service) requirements of delay-sensitive network applications, if there is a significant physical distance between a server of the network application (NetApp server) at a data center and its network application clients (NetApp clients). In order to improve communication QoS of NetApp clients, we propose server migration service (SMS) in this article. SMS allows NetApp servers to migrate among different locations in the network (1) to optimally locate themselves in relation to NetApp clients and mitigate the QoS degradation caused by location-related factors (ie, propagation delays on network links) and (2) to optimally distribute traffic load over routers and processing load over (physical) computers and decrease the energy consumption. We develop a mixed-integer programming model that determines when and to which locations NetApp servers migrate to minimize the total operating cost of SMS, that is, the sum of the monetary penalty incurred due to QoS violation and energy cost incurred due to energy consumption, while preventing NetApp servers from excessively migrating and adversely impacting QoS of the non-SMS service that share the resource of the substrate network with SMS. Simulation results show that the model developed in this article achieves up to 42% lower total operating cost of SMS compared to the model that only minimizes the monetary penalty of SMS without considering the energy cost of SMS.

As the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a widespread phenomenon, promising sensor applications at the nanoscale have begun to emerge. One example is imaging via distributed massive nanoscale nodes (NSNs), which can be used to implement 'invisible surveillance cameras' by, for example, painting liquids containing nanoscale sensors onto walls. This imaging method requires periodic data transfer from thousands of NSNs to a data collection node (DCN). An essential technique for handling such transfers is the media access control (MAC) protocol. However, existing protocols cannot support periodic transfer from numerous NSNs because of inefficient communication caused by a large amount of headers in the packets. In this article, we introduce an original MAC protocol and discuss its capability in terms of implementing imaging applications. The proposed protocol applies a time-division access (TDA) feature to reduce the amount of headers and a two-layered protocol to enable simultaneous transmission among nodes. Slot assignment is an essential function in TDA and requires communication among nodes. Unlike existing methods, our simple approach enables communication by exploiting the unique features of the focused application. The results of the numerical simulation reveal that the proposed MAC protocol allows for periodic imaging with more than three thousand nodes and produces high-quality images very close to those obtained using ideal communication. These results are achieved by employing an original design framework to determine appropriate key parameters, such as the number of clusters and frame rate.

Three algorithms for multiuser mobility method are evaluated in terms of performance to derive the most suitable algorithms for different practical application scenarios. Traditional multiuser mobility methods focus on improving throughput performance only without considering algorithm execution overhead and complexity. In contrast to previous studies, this paper develops an analytical tradeoff framework for the throughput and algorithmic complexity evaluation based on multiuser cooperative mobility in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). On the one hand, we quantitatively derive and model the optimal strategy for optimization throughput. On the other hand, we jointly evaluate the complexity performance of proposed algorithms, which are demonstrated by the discrepancies in the number of users, movable range, and location distribution. Numerical simulations show that the game-theoretic algorithm provides 16.85% throughput gain with high user volume, the bound-algorithm offers 17.22% throughput gain at large movement ranges and the graph-algorithm can reduce 29.26% complexity, indicating the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

In this paper, we propose and evaluate a user-selective mobility control method to improve communication performance in social ad hoc networks. In the network, the connected user depends on the relationship among users and the dynamic routing that optimizes the quality of service. The proposed method is a heuristic method that identifies the movable users and determines the user mobility direction regarding connection and location relationships. The three selected movable users are the user with a maximum number of connectable users, the user with a maximum number of connected users, and the farthest distance connected user. The direction of the user's mobility is the direction of the center of the region consisting of connectable users. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by comparing the throughput improvement and accuracy against throughput improvement at the optimal location. The calculated throughput improvement was 1.52 and the accuracy was 0.90 when the user with a maximum number of connectable users was moved by 20 meters. The throughput improvement was 1.15 and the accuracy was 0.83 when the user with a maximum number of connected users was moved by 15 meters. The throughput improvement was 1.22 and the accuracy was 0.75 when the farthest distance connected user was moved by 20 meters.

With the large-scale mobile Internet promotion, people frequently use social applications, such as Facebook, Instagram, etc., making the social network a valuable research subject in Device-to-Device (D2D) communication. Maintaining high throughput and quality of service (QoS) are vital metrics worthy of exploration. This paper proposes a social-relay ad hoc network model based on multi-user cooperative mobility, consisting of two issues: relay selection scheme and multi- user cooperative mobility strategy. To ensure link stability in the relay selection scheme, we jointly consider social links' requirements and the probability of successful data transmission in the physical layer. Since the optimization problem is NP- hard, with game theory, we define two strategic games that include relay selection game (RSG) and multi-user mobility game (MMG), to obtain the optimal relay and the best mobility strategy for maximizing throughput. The numerical results show that the proposed potential-game approach yields 13.93%, 81.78%, and 240.83% throughput gain over the previous mid-point selection scheme, random relaying and mobility, and direct transmission, respectively.

This paper describes a framework and evaluation results for user cooperative mobility control in ad hoc networks and the research results already achieved. In order for ad hoc networks as extended D2D communications to be a good complement to 5G and Beyond 5G cellular networks, further improvements for ad hoc networks in communication performance are needed. User cooperative mobility control is a method that does not require any changes on existing protocols or devices but can improve the performance simply by moving users having ad hoc network node devices. However, in practical implementation, influenced by factors such as network architecture (WLAN, ad hoc network), topology (dynamic, static), mobility cost, etc., this paper presents an overall control framework to achieve higher QoS. Within this framework, the characteristics of user cooperative mobility control in different factors and scenarios are analyzed in detail. The results that have been achieved are shown. This work will contribute to the design and development of higher QoS for future mobile smart devices, particularly in the context of autonomous driving and AR/XR.

For multi-transmission rate environments, access point (AP) connection methods have been proposed for maximizing system throughput, which is the throughput of an entire system, on the basis of the cooperative behavior of users. These methods derive optimal positions for the users’ cooperative behavior, which means that new users move to improve the system throughput when connecting to an AP. However, conventional methods only focus on increasing the transmission rate of new users without regard to the performance impact on existing users. In addition, these methods do not account for co-channel or stacked frequency interference between users. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to access point connectivity which maximizes the system throughput by taking into account the interference between users and the initial position of all users. In addition, our proposed method can improve system throughput by about 6 % at most compared to previous methods.

In a public mesh network, we propose a control method to move mesh access points (APs) to optimal locations in response to traffic condition changes and evaluate the effectiveness of the move. To adapt the dynamic movement of pedestrian terminals accommodated in the mesh network, we configure a mesh network with in-UAV APs and move the APs with the UAVs. In the calculation to find the optimal location that minimizes the AP's moving distance and maximizes the user traffic accommodation, it is not realistic to find the exact solution in brute force ways. Thus, we propose a heuristic method (DMT method) that iteratively applies a minimum spanning tree method to determine the connectivity of all terminals and a spring balance model to determine the optimal AP locations. The proposed method was proven effective with the evaluation results in which throughput was improved up to 5.21 times compared to that before the move, and was approximately 95% of the exact solution.

We propose a novel travel route control for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) ad hoc networks. In this method, relaying AMRs (referred to as "nodes") can provide high throughput for a longer time by relaying other nodes data and taking a route that mitigates interference from external networks. Relay nodes form the ad hoc network as they move. At this time, it takes a longcut route on its own path for the best performance, so that it can take the best position for relaying. In ad hoc networks formed with moving nodes, it is difficult to comprehensively consider effects of influence from external network and effects of communication distance with adjacent communication node. Thus, it is also difficult to set up an optimal route in which relay nodes can take a longcut route and take the best position for relaying. The evaluation results showed that the proposed method can maintain high throughput in 72% of the routes.

We have studied and confirmed the effectiveness of a previously proposed relay-node routing method for ad hoc networks with autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) when the effects of interference on throughput are significant. The system under study is a wireless LAN ad hoc network in which AMRs communicate with edge servers with the support of relaying AMRs. The problem with ad hoc networks composed of AMRs is that it is difficult to set up optimal routes that can be made by relay-nodes making longcut routes. This is because it is difficult to comprehensively consider the degree of influence due to interference from external networks and the degree of influence due to communication distance with neighboring communication nodes. Therefore, in the VDR method, we model the factors involved in route setting from time to time as vectors, synthesize them, and control the movement in the direction indicated by the synthesized vectors. We have qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated the VDR method and found that the results are almost the same or better than those of conventional methods, even when the effects of interference are large.

In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of user cooperative mobility in ad-hoc networks with restriction that arise when the nodes are vehicles parked on side of the road. Conventional methods have been proposed to move nodes to proper positions in order to achieve the maximum throughput of the whole networks. However, in the case of ad-hoc networks utilizing parked vehicles, nodes are only allowed to move alongside roads. It is concerned that conventional user cooperative mobility methods would be useless, but no studies have mentioned this problem. In this study, we assume a service that vehicles parked on side of the road form an ad-hoc networks and provide wireless LANs service to neighboring pedestrians. We compare the throughput performances with and without the restriction. In a simple model where nodes are placed in uniform, we showed that the throughput with the restriction was improved by 50%. Furthermore, with ten thousand trials in a model where nodes are placed at random, we also showed that the throughput was improved by 52.8% on average. This result indicates that user cooperative mobility is effective even with restricted position.

We propose an optimal user selection method on mobility control for ad hoc networks to improve QoS. In the proposed method, the best user, which is the best movable user for QoS, is selected based on physical distances between users in an ad hoc network and on the connection relationships between the users. The method also indicates the best destination to move that user to within a reasonable time. To reduce the search cost to obtain the best destination, the proposed method reduces the areas to be searched by identifying the discrete positions where transmission rates change according to the measurement data model. All the identified positions are examined to determine whether to relay another user to determine the best position. The evaluation results show that the proposed method achieved 99.0% of the maximum throughput obtained by moving the best user to the best destination. Throughput improvement of 10.3% was achieved compared with the conventional user mobility control method, which adopts a heuristic approach. Although the proposed method requires more running time than the conventional heuristic approach, it remains within a reasonable time.

This paper proposes a retransmission strategy using the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in the PC5-based cellular-V2X mode 4 (called mode 4) to mitigate the channel congestion. The proposed strategy has two key ideas. The first idea is to allow each node (e.g., a car or a pedestrian) to retransmit its packet at lower transmission power than its original packet in the first transmission. The second idea is that each node aims to synchronize its low-powered retransmission with the first transmission of its neighbor node. The two key ideas boost the PRR through diversity effects by mitigating interference and providing power differences with widely deployed receivers. Our simulations highlighted that the proposed strategy outperformed the existing NOMA with retransmissions in mode 4 by 29%.

We propose two VM migration methods that improve the total sum of program correct by dynamically moving VMs to appropriate edge node. We assume a multi-hierarchy information processing system that the cloud data center and the edge node VM (Virtual Machine) perform processing at the same time, the data center completes all processing, and the VM has the required response time and returns a result that the processing has progressed (called accuracy). The first method is 'VM sweeping method' that allocates more CPU time to VMs that perform high accuracy processing. The second methods is 'VM sweeping method' that allocates more CPU time to VMs that perform high accuracy processing that improves per unit CPU time (AIR), and 'VM number averaging method' that attempts to move VMs so that the assignment status of the CPU time in all edge nodes is equal. The accuracy improvement effect of the proposed VM migration method was evaluated by a simulator. Evaluations changed the AIR from the Early-blooming type where the accuracy greatly increases in the first half to the Late-blooming type where the accuracy greatly increases in the second half, and comparing it with the case where the VM is not moved. It was clarified that a big effect can be expected in the VM sweeping method, and the VM number averaging method in the Earlyblooming type program.

In this paper, we propose a user cooperative mobility to improve Transmission Control Protocol-Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (TCP-BBR) throughput. In a single-flow ad-hoc network with TCP-BBR traffic, the TCP-BBR does not work well due to the variation of Round-Trip Time (RTT). By considering the fact that TCP-BBR does not work well, the proposed Data suppression Acknowledge character (ACK) retention method stabilizes the RTT and improves the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) bandwidth at the same time. After giving an overview of the proposed method, we show the results of evaluating the throughput characteristics by NS3 simulation. The results show that the proposed method successfully improves the throughput by up to 232% compared to the throughput before moving, which is better than the conventional method, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

By enabling direct communications between nearby user equipment (UE), device-to-device (D2D) communication has become one of the key technologies in 5th generation (5G) mobile networks. D2D communication brings new communication opportunities for mobile devices, especially in a highly dense network. In this paper, D2D communication in the unlicensed spectrum, namely, D2DUnlicensed (D2D-U), is discussed. The use of unlicensed frequency bands can ease the shortage of spectrum resources and improve network performance. However, the D2D-U in 5G has significant effects on the network performance of existing unlicensed networks sharing the same frequency bands, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Therefore, it is necessary to design a fair coexistence scheme for D2D-U. To understand the coexistence problem, in this paper, we first formulate the network performance of D2DU and Wi-Fi under two different coexistence schemes, namely, listen before talk (LBT) and duty cycle mechanism (DCM). Then, we use computer simulations to investigate a mode selection scheme that switches between these two schemes and point out the best possible solution for the coexistence between D2D-U and Wi-Fi.

We propose a method to improve Quality of Service (QoS) between the IEEE802.11 AP (access point) and the AMR by using a neighboring AMR as a relay communication node. We assume a self-driving small vehicle as an AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot) such as auto-driving wheelchair, which drives to an on-demand destination. The proposed method consists of a midpoint-following route control method and a relay control method. In the midpoint-following route control method, neighboring AMRs (Contribution-AMRs, C-AMRs) move in the direction of the midpoint between its AP and a moving AMR (Benefit-AMR, B-AMR). Then, the C-AMR could relay the B-AMR to the AP for better QoS. The relay control method decides whether to use the relay or not depending on estimations of throughput based on positions of B-AMRs, C-AMRs and APs. The proposed route control obtains semi-optimal move for a C-AMR and also obtains the highest throughput for a B-AMR. Because an initial position of the C-AMR significantly effects on QoS, QoS characteristics is discussed with the initial position.

Social networks are playing an increasingly important role in information dissemination in wireless ad hoc networks with the wide adoption of the mobile Internet. In particular, in social application scenarios such as Facebook and Twitter, the questions of how to fully consider the social relationships between users to ensure the quality of service (QoS) urgently needs to be explored. This paper investigates an optimal social relay selection scheme with high intimacy requirements to maximize the system throughput for social-physical ad hoc networks with device-to-device (D2D) communication. Different from previous studies, we jointly consider feasible relays and multiuser cooperative mobility with satisfactory link reliability for throughput maximization. On the one hand, we formulate a nonlinear and nonconvex problem, which is typically NP-hard, for throughput optimization. Specifically, this optimization problem is divided into two subproblems: I) selecting the optimal relays and ii) determining the best mobility strategy in terms of throughput. On the other hand, we first convert the relay selection subproblem into an optimal stopping phase problem, and then propose a definition of a graph representing the degrees of interference between physical links, transforming the original optimization problem into a convex problem that is solvable using the Lagrange multiplier method. Based on the above, we propose the Relay selection and Link Interference Degree Graph (RS-LIDG) algorithm to solve the two subproblems. Numerical simulations verify that the proposed RS-LIDG method improves the throughput gain by 26.29%, 123.43%, and 236.47% compared to the intuitive method (IM), the social-trust-based random mobility selection method (STS-RM), and the physical-based random mobility selection method (PHS-RM), respectively.

This paper proposes a probabilistic cooperative transmission scheme with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), named NO-ProbReM, for the PC5-based cellular-vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) mode 4 in the crash warning system (CWS). In the proposed method, each node probabilistically selects a packet based on its cooperation ability under a limited cooperation power level, which is assigned within the total transmission power limit; then, the node superposes its own packet signal and the selected packet signal on a NOMA basis. The proposed probabilistic mechanism autonomously improves the link reliability within a specific range by the limited-assigned cooperation power while guaranteeing that the direct link is sufficiently similar reliability to mode 4. Our simulation results demonstrated that with suitable parameters, the proposed method mitigated the potential channel congestion of the current mode 4; in particular, the proposed method provided 50% better performance than the current mode 4 in the fundamental node density model. These results highlight that the proposed method advanced the infrastructure-less C-V2X in the CWS.

With the widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT), throughput performance is a crucial metric in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) constrained by wireless bandwidth resources. Specifically, how to maximize throughput while keeping bandwidth resources constant needs to be explored. This paper investigates the optimal mobility strategy to maximize throughput in MANETs. Unlike previous studies, which mostly set a small number of fixed users and did not consider the location profiles, we jointly consider different location distributions and multiuser cooperative mobility to maximize the system throughput. On the one hand, we consider two scenarios of users' location distributions as centralized and decentralized, respectively. On the other hand, a game-theoretic approach can obtain the optimal strategy to maximize the system throughput for movable users. Numerical simulations show that the optimal cooperative mobility strategy yields 19.45% and 21.36% throughput gains over the previous intuitive approach for both location distributions.

This paper evaluates MAC-layer delay of IEEE 802.11ad based In-vehicle communications, where strong interference from multiple devices on own and other vehicles could occur stochastically due to beamforming. The wide frequency bandwidth of IEEE 802.11ad is expected to enable ultra-low latency in-vehicle communications. However, the beamforming of IEEE 802.11ad causes strong interference and could degrade the delay performance. To investigate the impact of the beamforming interference on delay performance, we conducted network simulations using ns3. The results show that a control method, fixed contention window (CW), achieved the maximum delay of 2 msec, whereas conventional control method, Distributed Coordination Function (DCF), did larger delay of 12 msec.

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of IEEE 802.11ad-based in-vehicle communication for a wireless harness. IEEE 802.11ad millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication enables high-speed wireless transmission, and its short communication range prevents harmful interference from other vehicles. However, in an in-vehicle environment, the received power of IEEE 802.11ad-based mmWave communications can be largely and easily attenuated by obstacles such as humans and the vehicle interior. Moreover, mmWave signals from adjacent vehicles can penetrate through vehicle windows and cause harmful interference. In this paper, we report the experimental results of in-vehicle communications using an actual vehicle and IEEE 802.11ad devices in an anechoic chamber. The experimental results demonstrate that IEEE 802.11ad-based in-vehicle communication can achieve a throughput of several hundred megabits per second, which is almost equivalent to that in achieved free space; this throughput can even be achieved when there are multiple obstacles in a vehicle and when adjacent vehicles (i.e., interferers) are in close proximity.

As such a congestion case, two WLAN were used to measure throughput when vehicle frames and windows of a vehicle mitigate interference from other WLANs of other vehicles. Experiments by using real 802.11ad devices were performed and provided many useful qualitative results. For example, throughput degradation by interference is very large, 71.9% with door opened and is still large, 32.1% through glass windows. The results also revealed that steel frame doors are effective enough to shield the interference regardless of glass windows being opened or closed.

Thanks to mobile evolution, a lot of mobile applications are used in mobile networks. Conventional mobile networks allocate radio resources to user terminals using expected throughput of each terminal and fairness between terminals. However, it becomes much more important to assure communication quality for each application under the circumstance that users are using a variety of applications. In this paper, we propose a radio resource scheduling method on a base station considering user-experienced quality (QoE) for each application. We aim at increasing users whose experienced quality is higher than a certain threshold, since users tend to dissatisfy and stop communication when QoE is lower than it. We conducted evaluations assuming that users were watching a video and browsing a Web page while they were moving. Evaluation shows that average QoE for Web improves by up to 1.48 point and the number of users whose QoE is more than 3.0 is 2.1 times more than conventional methods.

There are two major challenges in video streaming through the best-effort networks such as the Internet and mobile networks. The first challenge is to improve the users' quality of experience (QoE). The communication throughput fluctuates widely on best-effort networks because of radio interferences and cross-traffic, which causes the video interruption and playout delay. The Second is the utilization efficiency of network resources, which is from a viewpoint of a network operator. The increase of video data size with the evolution of high-resolution video occupies a network resource for a long time and makes network resources seriously tight. Another problem is that the received video data in a playout buffer goes to waste of the network resources when the user stops watching the video in the middle. In this paper, the authors propose a video streaming technology that solves the above two problems by combining a rate control method and a pacing technique based on the communication throughput prediction. By referring to the stochastic diffusion of the future throughput, the rate control selects the maximum bitrate under the condition that the playout interruption is avoided. The authors demonstrate that the proposed method improves the QoE indicator recommended by ITU-T (real number from one to five) by an average of 0.75 compared with the conventional methods. Furthermore, the experience shows that the pacing function improves the duration of opening network resources. Although the playout buffer size of the proposed method increases by 2 〜 3 MB, it is a predicted need to maintain high QoE.

Device-to-device1 (D2D) technology in fifth-generation wireless communication (5G) can leverage densely deployed multiple ad hoc networks. Much research has been done to improve QoS, such as throughput, which would decrease because of ad hoc networks' interference with each other. We focus here on the capture effect and its impact on the throughput performance. A contention window control method, ACWA, which improves the throughput of ad hoc networks by exploiting intentional collisions, has recently been proposed thanks to the capture effect. However, the unfairness of throughput between ACWA and the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) might occur because ACWA could be too aggressive. We propose a modified ACWA method (GSAR scheme) that drastically improves the unfairness and keeps throughput as high as ACWA. GSAR just uses DCF at the sending node and uses ACWA in the rest nodes. In our evaluations considering capture effect, Jain's fairness index resulted in 1.0 from 0.56 in two ad hoc networks with DCF and GSAR.

We set next research & development issues in this project. As core techniques, (1) collection of wireless communication records, (2) prediction of wireless communication quality based on the record history, and (3) delivery control and route navigation based on the quality prediction. As extension techniques, (4) large scale deployment, security, sensor assist, new wireless communication support, and QoE evalutions, and (5) prototype implementations. For (1) to (3), we proposed quality prediction methods using machine learning, adaptive delivery control maximizing QoE metrics, and moving route navigation maximizing communication quality such as throughputs. For (4) to (5), we tried cloud system extension, performance improvement by using additional sensors and implementation experiments over actual networks. Finally, we published our research contributions in international conferences and transactions with peer reviews.

The purpose of this research project is by exploring context-aware, resource requirement-driven network densification to realize ultra-high capacity and massive access capability for next-generation wireless access networks. To this end, we have tackled on the resource management and inter-cell interference mitigation problems in heterogeneous wireless cellular networks, and proposed optimization algorithms for dynamic cell-range expansion, users' cell selection, and dynamic network clustering with base station sleeping and shared caching functions. We have also studied on online resource management algorithms for mobile edge computing to provide computing and data caching capabilities in wireless access networks. By leveraging reinforcement learning and fussy logic based techniques, we have also proposed low-overhead clustering based routing protocols for context-aware data delivering in vehicular networks utilizing multiple wireless access technologies.
