本研究は、ポスト冷戦時代のドイツにおける「想起の文化」を対象にしている。「想起の文化」とは、ナチズムとホロコーストの負の過去をめぐる、今日のドイツの集合的想起の営みを指している。この「想起の文化」は、1980年代に輪郭を現し始め、90年の再統一後は政治・社会・文化のさまざまな次元で展開されている。通常の共同想起の営みが、肯定的な自己像を媒介し、それにそぐわない要素は排除するのに対して、ドイツの「想起の文化」の新しさは、自国の犯罪的過去とその被害者を積極的に共同想起のレパートリーに編入していることにある。この共同想起の実践は、東ドイツを吸収合併した連邦共和国の新たなナショナル・アイデンティティを基礎づけるためのものである。
本研究は、今日のドイツの「想起の文化」の諸相の中でも、とりわけ、90年代以降にベルリンに設置された新たな「想起の空間」（ミュージアム、モニュメント、パブリック・アートなど）に着目し、ナチズムやホロコーストの負の記憶にいかなる形が与えられ、社会的共有と次世代への継承がはかられているかを詳らかにするものである。
2020年度は、新型コロナウイルス感染拡大による渡航制限のため、当初予定していたドイツでのフィールドワークを実施することができなかった。その代わりに、本研究の成果を公表するために準備している単行本『想起のトポグラフィー（仮題）』（岩波書店刊行予定）の執筆に集中的に取り組んだ。その中でも、ドイツ歴史博物館、ベルリン・ユダヤ博物館、記録センター「テロルのトポグラフィー」、および、カウンターモニュメントを扱った諸章の執筆を進めた。また、再統一後のドイツの「想起の文化」の研究と並行して、集合的記憶についての理論的研究も行なっている。その一環として、ヤン・アスマン著『文化的記憶』（福村出版刊行予定）の翻訳作業を進めた。
「研究実績の概要」に述べたとおり、2020年度は、新型コロナウィルス感染拡大のため、予定していたドイツでのフィールドワークができなかった。そのため、必要な資料の収集にやや遅れが生じている。その一方で、執筆中の単行本『想起のトポグラフィー(仮題)』に関しては、ドイツ歴史博物館(第1章)、ベルリン・ユダヤ博物館(第2章)、記録センター「テロルのトポグラフィー」(第3章)、「カウンターモニュメント」（第4章」についての執筆を進めた。
2021年度は、2020年度に予定していたものの、新型コロナウィルス感染拡大のため断念せざるをえなかった、ドイツでのフィールドワークを行ないたい。ハンブルク、ザールブリュッケン、ベルリンでの資料収集を予定しているが、感染拡大の状況を見極めたうえで、渡航不可の場合には、本研究課題を再延長する可能性も視野に収めている。
フィールドワークと並行して、これまでの調査結果を単行本の形にまとめていく。 さらに、「文化的記憶」に関する理論的研究の一環として、目下翻訳中のヤン・アスマン著『文化的記憶』を、2021年度内に刊行したい。

Based on evolutionary psychology and Luhmanns social system theory, Karl Eibl's text which saw a significant change in the Enlightenment era in the history of western European thought as clues, we developed active discussions on "progress of spirituality", in addition to confirming the role that language and inference apparatus played in "non-world" construction. We are announcing the results of these achievements in the form of open seminars, symposiums, special issue planning of academic journals, and planning of books.

This research project studied, how the traumatic past of the Nazism, WWII, and the Holocaust is remembered in Germany after the reunification. Especially, my project focused on the historical representation in the public space and analyzed mainly monuments, museums and installations created in Berlin after 1990. For comparison, I investigated places of remembrance of the War in Japan. The results indicated that in Germany after the reunification the socio-political practices of remembering the Nazi past (i.e. the culture of memory) intend to symbolize the traumatic past as a contrastive self-image, on one hand in order to clarify the political profile of Germany as a democratic state within the framework of the EU, and on the other hand so as to strengthen the integration of the reunified nation.
