    Intersections pose a high crash risk for older drivers. Studies showed that diagnostic feedback, obtained through head-movement monitoring, can improve driving behavior. However, the logic behind which traffic scene facilitates such driver evaluation is lacking. Here, we show that specific visibility and traffic volume enhance evaluation. A multimodal large language model assigned labels to naturalistic data, yielding 1,200 intersection scenes from 19 seniors. We found that the strongest correlation between risky events and head movement occurs at the lowest visibility and smallest traffic volume, and feedback improves safety. The results suggest that suitable identification in traffic conditions enhances driving diagnostics.

    In this study, we investigate a method to make safe driving habits by making drivers take preparing behavior for potential risks by providing information corresponding to driving behavior when approaching an intersection. By the effect verification in the driving simulator, we confirmed the increase of the expected action, and it was indicated to be effective for the induction to the safe driving.

    To address elderly driver crashes at stop sign intersections, we developed a driver evaluation system using DMS-based head movement analysis and driving scores. The system, integrated with a driving simulator, generated diagnostic reports to provide feedback on driving behavior. Among eight elderly drivers, driving scores increased by 9% on average after feedback, with a 40% longer checking time and reduced vehicle speed during confirmation. However, not all drivers showed similar improvements; drivers with reduced cognitive function or overconfidence demonstrated limited progress. These findings highlight the potential for short-term behavioral change and the need for tailored feedback strategies for individual drivers.

    In a driver assistance system, the information presented at inappropriate timing reduces reliability and acceptability. Therefore, we conducted a DS experiment to investigate the relationship between the necessity for notifying approaching bicycles and their position and speed. As a result, it was found that whether or not the notification is judged appropriate could be estimated by the TTC of the bicycle. it was also found that informing the reason is effective to help prevent distrust when the bicyclist changed his/her path after the notification.

    We studied a deceleration intervention support that achieves sufficient deceleration to safely pass through an intersection with priority traffic on residential roads. First, targets were set for the position and vehicle speed at the end of the intervention. Next, the intervention start position could be set from vehicle speed and deceleration level, provided that the target at the end of intervention could be achieved. Then, a driving simulator experiment was conducted to evaluate intervention support with varying vehicle speed and deceleration level to determine how the start of deceleration intervention could be judged in terms of driver acceptability and discomfort.

    This paper reports on the psychological evaluation of a driving-support agent that praises the driver in a real car environment. We conducted an experiment in which 12 participants, recruited through a staffing agency, drove an experimental vehicle (Toyota Corolla Sport) equipped with a driving-support agent on public roads and experienced praise from the agent. As a result of the psychological evaluation after the experience, the impression evaluation of the driving-support agent itself and the praise was high. Furthermore, a correlation analysis between the impression evaluation and the Big Five personality traits of the experiment participants revealed that participants with high cooperativeness and openness tended to have a good impression of the driving-support agent’s compliment, while participants with high diligence and negative emotionality tended to have a low impression of the effect of the compliments on improving their awareness of safe driving. On the other hand, participants with high industriousness and negative emotionality tended to have a low impression of the effect of the improvement in their awareness of safe driving.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of improving safety confirmation behavior by instruction including compliment by a driving support agent. We conducted an experiment using a driving simulator and an eye tracking device to investigate changes in the safety checking behavior of drivers before and after experiencing a driving support agent that gives compliment and guidance. The results of the experiment showed that the number of situations in which drivers improved their safety-checking behavior with compliment was greater than that without compliment, suggesting the possibility of improving safety-checking behavior.

    In this paper, we examine the acceptability of a driving situation announce agent for fully automated driving. A driving situation announce agent is a method of notifying a user of a fully automated vehicle of the presence or absence of surrounding vehicles and the driving operations to be performed by the automated driving system through spoken utterances and gestures. We designed agent speech and gestures for driving situations such as merging with other vehicles and intersections, and evaluated the acceptability of the agent to a fixed number of experimental participants (n = 600) through a video-based impression evaluation experiment. The experimental results show that the agent’s acceptability may not change drastically depending on the size or presence of gestures, while the user’s confidence in driving and anxiety about automated driving are significantly related to acceptability, and the tendency of the relationship varies depending on the size or presence of gestures. These findings are useful for the design of in-vehicle agents for fully automated vehicles.

    In recent years, the percentage of traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers has been increasing. Driver assistance robots, a type of driver assistance mechanism, have attracted attention as a means of solving this problem. In this paper, we investigate the effect of speech characteristics of a driver assistance robot on the degree of acceptance of advice from the robot (support acceptability). As a result, it was confirmed that lowering the pitch of particles and sentence endings increases the impression of intelligence, while raising the pitch increases the impression of anthropomorphism. In addition, a positive correlation was found between intelligence and support acceptability in subjects who were anthropomorphized toward the driver assistance robot. This suggests that the impression of intelligence may be necessary to increase support acceptability.

    One of the challenging issues in V2X system to help prevent Car-to-Bicyclist crashes is the information reliability, to be more specific, for the cases where cars do not encounter bicyclists owing to their sudden direction change (false positive) or for those where cars encounter bicyclists with no signal transmission (true negative). Car drivers’ acceptance was investigated to understand the influence of the extent of false positive and that of true negative. To reduce adverse effect by highly relying on receiving the information, an extra investigation aiming to maintain driving attention by offering the fundamental traffic circumstance risk was performed.

    The SQ-CCDC, a simplified questionnaire with a variety of driving-related variables, was developed using items that can represent differences among elderly drivers, and it is better to be able to provide feedback immediately after answering in order to operationalise it. It is not realistic to estimate the latent rank of respondents from their response patterns using LRT software. It is more practical to be able to estimate the latent rank from the sum score. In this report, we examined the cut-off points so that ranks can be analogously estimated from the sum scores of each subscale.

    Many studies on driving behaviour and human characteristics often use multiple questionnaires, that is burdensome for older drivers. It works efficiently if only valid items are used to adequately represent differences among older drivers. The aim of the present report is to develop an exhaustive questionnaire incorporating several driving-related scales. The analysis was conducted using the latent rank theory. As a result, the 121 items of the existing questionnaire could be reduced to 45 items without significant loss of information. With the new questionnaire, it is possible to measure 8 different subjective assessments, such as safe driving orientation and awareness of change.

    Drivers' head movements are informative measures for evaluating the safety of elderly drivers. However, those measures are too technical for general elderly drivers to understand the meaning and how to improve them. This paper applied a principal component analysis (PCA) on elderly drivers' head movement measures driving a simulator, resulting in integrated head movement measures as principal axes that are easily interpretable: steadiness, quickness, and timeliness. Chart diagrams of PCA scores show an individual as well as group elderly drivers' characteristics. Based on the PCA scores, we discuss possible feedbacks for the elderly drivers.

    To reduce traffic accidents by elderly drivers, we have been developing a robot that reviews their driving with them after returning home. The users put the robot in the car when driving, and reviews their driving with the robot when they get home. In reviewing own driving together with the robot, they may accept the robot’s advice (support acceptability), according to increase attachment to the robot. Naming the robot is considered to be a way to increase the attachment. In this paper, we conducted an experiment focusing on naming the robot. As the result, the correlation between attachment to the robot and support acceptability lowered in the case of naming. It is possible that increased attachment to robots may not lead directly to improved support acceptability.

    Recently, educational-support robots, which support learning, have been researched and developed. Most previous study focused on the learning effect of the robots teaching learners in learning contents such as mathematics and drawing work. Moreover, the research on the robots which prompt elderly driver to improve their driving behavior is paid attention. In the teaching material of the driving technique, it is often taught using the actual driving image. It is also reported that the learning method using media teaching materials using moving images has high learning effect on learners. However, it has not been verified whether teaching using dangerous driving movie by robot can improve learning effect to learners compared with learning method using media teaching material by dangerous driving movie. Thus, this paper investigates the learning effect given to learners by teaching driving actions to learners by using dangerous driving movie. The degree of mastery in this paper is defined as how much information learned after learning is acquired. In the experiment, the group which received the instruction from the robot using the dangerous driving movie was compared with the group which received the instruction from the learning system using the media teaching material.

    In recent years, the percentage of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers has been increasing, and it is becoming a social problem. To prevent the traffic accidents, it is important for elderly drivers to improve own driving by reviewing it. We have been developing a system that allows to review driving situations at home, in order to improve driving behavior. In this paper, we propose models for estimating the distance between a vehicle and stop lines by using the inclusion-exclusion integral regression model from dashboard camera for the system. First, we extract an image where the markers are placed with known distance to the car in order to build a model. Second, we build six models by varying t-norm of the inclusion-exclusion integral regression model. Then, we compare estimated distances with each obtained model.

    This study investigated driver’s face images on public roads using a commercial driver monitoring system, aiming to make feedbacks about how the drivers check the safety. The study focused on the head movements of older drivers versus middle-aged drivers, and high-speed drivers versus low-speed drivers, observed at stop-sign intersections. It tested several measures that characterize the temporal and spatial aspects of head movements. Two sample t-tests revealed the significant decrease in head speed, head angle, and the increase of the ratio of short duration in the high-risk driver groups, suggesting the usefulness of head movements for driving assist systems.

    近年,先進安全自動車技術の開発・実用化・運用の促進が行われている.先進安全自動車技術の一つであり,前走車両に追従走行を行うACC(Adaptive Cruise Control)は,急速に普及している. 本研究では,ACC作動時のドライバの不安感を軽減することを目指したHMI(Human Machine Interface)を提案する.また,自分の運転とACCの加減速タイミングが特に異なると考えられる他車の割り込み場面に着目し,HMIによる情報の提示内容による違いで不安感を軽減できると仮説を立て,印象評価を行い不安感を軽減する効果を調査したので報告する.

    Recently, the number of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers has been increasing, and it is known that side collisions at the intersection are particularly frequent. Thus, we put on-dash cams for 22 drivers aged 50-82 years old to measure their driving behavior at stop intersections. The relation between emergency braking frequency and looking behavior, and cognitive/physical characteristics and driving attitude were investigated. The results show that some elderly drivers can perform compensatory driving behaviors such as looking both ways at stop intersections to reduce the frequency of emergency braking even though their cognitive and physical characteristics have deteriorated.

    Aiming to avoid disruptions caused by e-mail notifications or phone calls and to provide notifications at appropriate times, this study examined the feasibility to predict the duration of uninterruptible state of PC users based on the PC operation information. We proposed a probabilistic work-continuance model whose probability varies depending on the used-application software, activity ratio between keystrokes and mouse clicks, and others. The experimental evaluation demonstrated the feasibility of prediction of uninterruptible durations.
    In addition, we demonstrated the feasibility to improve the accuracy of interruptibility estimation by using smartphone information. We also analyzed the observation on remotely shared interruptibility among team members using eye-tracking systems. It revealed that they observed about once an hour and frequently looked at themselves presumably for self-reflection.
