    The photolysis of tropospheric nitrous acid (HONO) has been recognized as a potentially important source of OH radicals. Atmospheric HONO could originate from both direct emissions and photochemical formation in the atmosphere. Here, we determined the triple oxygen isotopes of HONO because the Δ17O values of HONO produced via photochemical formation can be expected to have positive values while little anomaly should be expected for HONO emitted directly from various sources on the earth surface, which enable us to quantify their relative importance on the atmospheric HONO. Periodical sampling of atmospheric HONO was carried out at Sapporo and Nagoya, Japan. The Δ17O value of HONO was determined by combining sensitive determination method on isotope compositions of NO2- with filter-pack method in which HONO was collected as NO2- on alkaline impregnated filters. The estimated mixing ratios of HONO derived from secondary formation were higher in Nagoya than in Sapporo.

    Behavior of fine particulate matter in lakes and reservoirs is deeply related to environmental and engineering problems in those water bodies. Measurements were conducted in thermally stratified reservoirs on hydrodynamic conditions of water flow and fine suspended particles. The results showed velocity fluctuations of the same magnitude in vertical direction as horizontal directions, which could be one of the main factor of long term suspension of fine particular matter in the water bodies. As for chemical behavior of suspended particles, quantification of oxygen consumption rate in those environment of water column, inside of particle, and bottom sediment was undertaken using triple oxygen isotope tracer. The results of the measurements indicated validity of the method proposed in this study in the environment of fast oxygen consumption.

    Vertical distributions of both concentrations and the O-17-excesses of nitrate were determined four times during one year within the mesotrophic water column of Lake Biwa. By using both the deposition rate of atmospheric nitrate onto the entire surface of the lake and the influx/efflux of  nitrate via streams, we quantified the annual dynamics of nitrate (gross production rate of nitrate through nitrification and gross metabolic rate of nitrate through assimilation) based on the O-17-excess method. The results revealed that 642 Mmol of the remineralized nitrate was supplied into the water column through nitrification in the lake on an annual basis, while 810 Mmol of nitrate was metabolized in the lake through assimilation. In addition, the total metabolic rates of nitrate varied seasonally, with the highest rates in summer and the lowest in winter. We concluded that the O-17-excess method reliably estimates the dynamics of nitrate in mesotrophic lakes.

    In this study, we developed a new method for quantifying the denitrification rate in vitro using the triple oxygen isotopic compositions of nitrate as tracer. Our newly developed method eliminates the need to shield the culture vessel from the air. As a result, existing samplers, such as flux chamber for observing in situ fluxes of nitrogen at the sediment-water interface, core samplers for collecting surface sediments, sediment traps for collecting sediment particles, plankton net for collecting suspended particles, etc.) can now be used as a culture system. Our method has made it possible to culture sediments with simple operations with changing the in-situ redox environment as little as possible, and to obtain a highly accurate denitrification rate.

    In this study, we propose a new tracer called “atmospheric nitrate concentration”, which can be calculated from both concentration and triple oxygen isotopic composition of dissolved nitrate in river water, to determine the removal rate of nitrate (sum of denitrification rate and assimilation rate) in the river environments. We determine the in-situ denitrification, assimilation, and nitrification rates in the river water individually by tracing the atmospheric nitrate concentration together with total nitrate concentration. The results were compared with the denitrification / assimilation rate obtained by the conventional culture method. The new method is an epoch-making method that can quantify the denitrification rate of the entire river environment including the riverbed in the natural state without adding or culturing an artificial tracer.

    本研究では、キャビティリングダウン型分光計(CRDS)を用いることで、強還元剤を一切使わない二酸化炭素の三酸素同位体組成の高精度自動分析システムを開発する。具体的には、二酸化炭素中の酸素原子を定量的に水化し、CRDSを用いてこの水の三酸素同位体組成を分析する。対流圏二酸化炭素についてこれを超高精度で分析し、海洋や陸上生態系との間の相互作用などの炭素循環を高確度で定量化する。本研究を成功させることで、二酸化炭素の三酸素同位体組成を地球環境科学の指標として広く活用することが出来る新時代を切り拓く。
