    We have investigated the morphological and optical properties of α- and β-phase Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZnPc) thin films for application to organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs). It was found that the α-phase is completely converted to the β-phase by thermal annealing at 220 °C under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. When the α- to β-phase transition takes place, the surface roughness of the ZnPc film became flat uniformly with a nanometer order of unevenness by anisotropic growth of crystalline grains along a lateral direction to substrates. Correspondingly, the optical absorbance of the β-phase film became greater by 1.5–2 times than that of the α-phase one in an ultraviolet–visible–near infrared (UV–vis–NIR) wavelength range, which plays a role in increasing the number of photogenerated excitons. On the contrary, time-resolved photoluminescence measurements showed that the average lifetime of excitons for the β-phase film became shorter by 1/6–1/7 than that for the α-phase one, which plays a role in decreasing the number of excitons achieving the donor/acceptor interface where excitons are separated to carriers (holes and electrons). Both the increase in the number and the shortening in the average lifetime have a trade-off relationship with each other for contribution to the photoelectric conversion efficiency of OPVs. Then, we examined an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of OPVs using the α- and β-phase films as a donor and obtained that the former OPV (α-phase) exhibits a higher EQE by ∼2 times than the latter one (β-phase) in the wavelength range of 400 nm–800 nm.

    Immobilization and reuse of CO2 are urgent tasks for sustaining our global environment. Here we demonstrate that CO2 can be immobilized by reaction with H2O at room temperature (RT) in the specific sub-nm space of one-dimensional uneven-structured C60 polymer (1D polymer) film, even though the reaction does not occur at RT in the gas phase (activation energy: ca. 2 eV). First-principles calculations revealed that the CO2 molecule is stacked as a bridge between the concave portions of adjacent 1D polymer frameworks via locally induced Coulomb interactions. Such induced charge polarization activates CO2 both by weakening its double-bond nature and by lowering its lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy due to the bending motion. In addition, the flexible pai-orbitals of the 1D polymer provide the optimal Coulomb field to stabilize the transition state (TS) of the CO2 + H2O reaction remarkably. These factors work together to make the reaction possible at RT via no or negligible TSs.

    We have examined the formation of a two-dimensional (2D) new carbon network by inducing the general Stone–Wales transformation between adjacent C60 molecules in a 2D dumbbell-type C60 polymer film. Structural changes in pristine C60 films after ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) light and electron-beam (EB) irradiations were studied using in situ scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and in situ Fourier- transformed infrared (IR) spectroscopy, in combination with first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. Analyses of STM images and depth profiles found that three types of photopolymerized dumbbell-shaped dimers and trimers are formed on the surface layers of pristine C60 films: (i) [2+2] C60 dimers formed in a lateral direction, (ii) [2+2] dimerization of C60 between the first and second layers, and (iii) a triangular [2+2] C60 trimer along a lateral direction. As UV-vis light irradiation time increases, a comparison between experimental and theoretical IR spectra indicated that 2D dumbbell-shaped C60 polymers are formed within a few surface layers of the C60 film (in a similar manner, a 1D dumbbell-shaped polymer is also formed in a shallow space of the C60 film), whereas a [2+2] dumbbell-shaped dimer is formed in any bulk space of the film. Thereafter, when the EB was irradiated to the photopolymerized C60 film, the evolution of IR spectra with respect to EB irradiation time suggested that the 2D dumbbell-type C60 polymer is not decomposed but structurally changed to form a new network polymer.

    We have investigated chemical forms of rhodium (Rh) ion in nitric acid solution by using spectroscopic and first-principles methods, in order to develop the disposal of high-level radioactive nuclear liquid wastes (HLLW). The electronic structure of Rh complexes in both pure water and nitric acid solutions was investigated using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy. Comparison with many-electron calculations indicates that Rh ion forms an octahedral bidentate complex coordinated with three nitrate ions, [Rh(NO3)3], in both pure water and nitric acid solutions. This is consistent with thermodynamic prediction. Since the overall feature of UV-vis spectra of the Rh complex remained unchanged in a range of 0–3 M nitric acid solutions, the structure of the Rh complex was found to be stable in the range. In addition, since no significant changes in UV-vis spectra of Rh complex were observed under γ- ray radiation, the Rh complex, [Rh(NO3)3], can be expected to be stable in actual HLLW.

    A sorbent, Aluminum hexacyanoferrate (AlHCF), has been
    developed for separating platinum group elements (PGMs) such
    as Pd, Ru, and Rh in high-level liquid waste generated from
    spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. The general sorption behavior of
    PGMs to AlHCF was measured. Without metal ions, substantial
    elution of AlHCF by nitric acid was observed. The single PGM
    sorption test revealed that Pd had fast kinetics and sorbed well to
    AlHCF, but the slow kinetics of Rh resulted in total dissolution
    of the sorbent. However, the reconstruction of the sorbent structure
    including Al and Fe, was observed. A competitive sorption
    experiment revealed that the coexistence of Pd stabilized the
    structure against nitric acid, and the percent sorption of Rh
    increased with the Pd concentration. Understanding the sorption
    and dissolution behavior of AlHCF will help improve its
    performance as a PGM sorbent.

    We have examined the electric, optical, and thermal properties of C60 films before and after electronbeam (EB: an incident energy of 3 keV) irradiation by inducing a variety of cross-linked structures between
    adjacent C60 molecules via the general Stone-Wales transformation, and demonstrated that those properties can be controlled by EB irradiation time: the resistivity r is continuously changed by 106
    times and optical absorbance of C60 film increases in a range of 350 850 nm when compared to that of pristine C60 film, and the heat-resistance becomes higher that is comparable to that of polyimide film
    commercially available as the highest heat-resistance organic material.

    Columnar liquid crystals composed of a giant
    macrocyclic mesogen were prepared. The giant macrocyclic
    mesogen has a square hollow with a 2.5 nm diagonal, which
    was bounded by diindolo[3,2-b:2',3'-h]carbazole (diindolocarbazole)
    moieties as the edges and bis(salicylidene)-ophenylenediamine
    (salphen) moieties as the corners. The
    shape and size of the macrocycle were directly observed by
    scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Each side of the bright
    square in the STM image corresponds to a diindolocarbazole
    moiety, and the length of the sides was consistent with the result
    of the single crystal analysis of diindolocarbazole. Finally, we
    successfully obtained a giant macrocycle with long and
    branched side chains, which exhibited a rectangular columnar
    LC phase over a wide temperature range. To the best of our
    knowledge, it contained the largest discrete inner space of any
    thermotropic columnar liquid crystal composed of macrocyclic
    mesogens.

    Einstein first applied Riemannian geometry to develop the general theory of relativity almost one hundred years ago and succeeded in understanding astronomical-scale phenomena such as the straining of time-space by a gravitational field. Whether or not Riemannian space affects the electronic properties of condensed matters on a much smaller scale is of great interest. Although Riemannian geometry has been applied to quantum mechanics since the 1950s, nobody has yet answered this question, because the electronic properties of materials with Riemannian geometry have not been examined experimentally. We report here the first observation of Riemannian geometrical effects on the electronic properties of materials such as Tomononaga-Luttinger liquids, which were previously theoretically predicted by our group. We present in situ high-resolution ultraviolet photoemission spectra of a one-dimensional metallic C60 polymer with an uneven periodic peanut-shaped structure.

    Fullerene (C60) film is one of possible candidates for high-performance thermoelectric materials because of its giant Seebeck coefficient (S) of -110 mV/K at room temperature (RT) [1]. For application of the C60 film to practical thermoelectric devices, it is indispensable to improve a very low electrical conductivity (σ = ca.10-5 Ω-1cm-1) of the C60 film. In addition, since the C60 film exhibits a large N-type S value (< 0), a large P-type S value (> 0) should be emerged for C60-based films, because practical thermoelectric devices have a -type structure composed of a sequential array of P- and N-type thermoelectric materials. In this study, we have demonstrated that the P-type thermoelectric C60-based films can be formed by co-deposition of C60 and molybdenum oxide (MoO3).

    Fullerene (C60) film exhibits a giant Seebeck coefficient (S) of -110 mV/K at room temperature (RT) [1], thus being one of candidates for novel flexible thermoelectric materials. Our goal is to fabricate high-performance thermoelectric conversion devices with a π-type structure composed of a sequential array of P- and N-type C60-based films. We recently found that the composite film formed by co-deposition of C60 and molybdenum oxide (MoO3) shows a giant P-type S of +40 mV/K and an electrical conductivity (σ) greater by 102 times than that of pristine C60 films [2]. Although the pristine C60 film has the giant N-type S as described above, it shows a very low σ of ca. 10-6 Ω-1cm-1. In this study, we aim to form a highly conductive N-type C60-based film by co-deposition of C60 and cesium carbonate (Cs2CO3).

    Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) have been extensively investigated owing to their fascinating advantages such as flexibility, highly designability, and low fabrication cost. However, the energy conversion efficiency (η) of OPVs is still ca. 10%, which is much lower than those (ca. 25% at most) of the conventional Si solar cells. In order to improve the η of OPVs, it is indispensable to increase both the short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage simultaneously. In the former case, it is important to understand the elementary processes of photoelectric conversion [1-4]. In the present study, we examined the structural and optical properties of lead phthalocyanine (PbPc) used as a donor for C60-based OPVs, because PbPc films exhibit absorption bands in a wide wavelength region of 400-1000 nm.

    Immobilization and reuse of CO2 is one of the urgent tasks for sustaining our global environment. We have recently found that CO2 can be easily immobilized by reacting with H2O at room temperature (RT) in the sub-nm space constructed in one-dimensional (1D) metallic uneven structured C60 polymer film [1], even though the reaction cannot take place at RT in gas phase (activation energy Ea: ca. 2 eV). In addition, the reaction did not proceed in the sub-nm space of pristine C60 film. These results suggest that not only the sub-nm space but also the framework of the 1D polymer play a specific role for the reaction occurred at RT. First-principles calculations indicate that CO2 molecule is stuck in between adjacent 1D C60 polymer chains at their concave portions, and then H2O molecule attacks to the CO2 with bending that remarkably reduces the Ea enough for the reaction to proceed at RT.

    High-level radioactive nuclear liquid wastes (HLLW: radioactive metal ions in 2 M nitric acid solution) are generated in the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels or in the decommissioning of nuclear reactors. In the process of producing the vitrified objects containing the wastes by using a glass melter, platinum-group metals (PGMs) [especially, ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), and palladium (Pd)] and molybdenum (Mo) cause serious problems: PGMs tend to be accumulated on the sidewall surface of the melter, whereas Mo compounds, so called yellow phase, are formed in the vitrified object. These issues result in (i) degradation of vitrified objects due to heterogenization and (ii) an increase in both disposal space and processing costs in conjunction with additional vitrified rods obtained by flushing the glass melter.
    To solve these issues, we have developed a process for efficient removal of PGMs and Mo from HLLW prior to introducing into the glass melter, using metal hexacyanoferrates (HCF) as a sorbent. It is important to reveal the sorption mechanisms of PGMs and Mo for design of high performance HCF sorbents. In this talk, we will present the results on the sorption characteristics of Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles, one of the HCFs, to the above metal ions in nitric acid solution, obtained using various spectroscopies and first-principles calculations.

    Metal phthalocyanines (MPc) and fullerenes have been considered as important constituents of the organic
    photovoltaic cells. A key issue in such devices is the charge transport across the heterojunctions of these
    organic molecules, which is crucially determined by the alignment of frontier molecular orbitals at MPc/C60
    interfaces. In this work, we studied the frontier molecular orbital alignment at organic heterojunction made of
    manganese phthalocyanine (MnPc) and C60 on Ag(111) by
    means of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy
    (STM/STS) and density functional (DFT) calculation. A selfassembled
    C60 island is grown on the top of a full monolayer
    of MnPc on Ag(111). The most favorable stacking geometry
    of the C60/MnPc heterostructure determined by DFT
    calculation is the one with the Mn atom of MnPc lying between
    the 6:6 C=C double bond of C60 molecule and at distance of 2.23 Å
    below it.

    Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) have been attracting attention of low weight, reduced fabrication process and flexibility. To further improve the power conversion efficiency (η) of OPVs, it is necessary to precisely understand the influences of device structural characteristics on η. In this study, we have investigated the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of a double-layered hetero-junction OPVs of [ITO/Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZnPc)/C60/Al] OPV cell by varying ZnPc (donor)/C60 (acceptor) film thickness.
    Figure 1 shows the film-thickness dependence of ZnPc film (td) on EQE. EQE rapidly increased with increasing td from 12 to 20, and thereafter EQE gradually decreased for the three different excitation wavelengths. This was caused by the trade-off relationship between the photo-absorption and the exciton-diffusion of ZnPc film, which is consistent with our previous result for a similar structural OPV cell using Zinc octaethylporphyrin as a donor1). We will discuss these results in detail, along with those for C60 film thickness.

    The operation of vitrification process is disturbed by the deposition of platinum group metals (PGMs : Pd, Rh and Ru) to the bottom of glass melter and the formation of yellow phase (low viscosity glass) by molybdenum (Mo). The establishment of separation process of PGMs and Mo from high-level liquid waste (HLLW) is desired for the stable operation of vitrification process. We propose a new separation process of PGMs and Mo from HLLW, which consists of three steps, (1) a simultaneous adsorption process of PGMs and Mo by metal ferrocyanides, (2) a thermal decomposition process of ferrocyanide adsorbing them and (3) a separation process of them by solvent extraction technique. The adsorption of PGMs and Mo into metal ferrocyanides was tested by a HNO3 solution with major 7 elements and a simulated HLLW with 23 elements. It was found that aluminum ferrocyanide is suitable for the simultaneous recovery of PGMs and Mo from HLLW. The separation of PGMs and Mo from an acidic solution obtained by the thermal decomposition and the acid leaching of PGMs and Mo was accomplished by the combination of two extraction processes, that is, the extraction process of Mo with an acidic organophosphorus compound, di(2-ethylhexylphophric acid) and a synergistic extraction process of PGMs with thiodiglycolamide and dialkylamine.

    The operation of vitrification process is disturbed by the deposition of platinum group metals (PGMs : Pd, Rh and Ru) to the bottom of glass melter and the formation of yellow phase (low viscosity glass) by molybdenum (Mo), which cause the quality reduction and the volume increase of vitrified objects. The establishment of separation technique of PGMs and Mo from high-level liquid waste (HLLW) is desired for the stable operation of vitrification process. In this study, we propose a new separation system of PGMs and Mo from HLLW, which consists of a simultaneous separation process of these metals by an inorganic adsorbent and a recovery process of them by solvent extraction technique. At first, the screening tests of inorganic adsorbent were carried out by a HNO3 solution with major 7 elements (Pd, Rh, Ru, Mo, Cs, Fe and Na) and a simulated HLLW with 23 elements. We found that a ferrocyanide compound, aluminum ferrocyanide, is suitable for the simultaneous recovery of PGMs and Mo from HLLW. The recovery of PGMs and Mo from a highly-concentrated HNO3 solution, which was obtained by the thermal decomposition of aluminum ferrocyanide and the acid dissolution of the decomposition product, is attainable by the combination of two extraction processes. Mo in the highly acidic solution was recovered easily by an acidic organophosphorus compound, di(2-ethylhexylphophric acid). PGMs were separated and recovered selectively by the application of a synergistic extraction process with thiodiglycolamide and dialkylamine.

    (1) 熱電変換機能の開拓
    超高真空(UHV)下でマイクロプローバを用いてゼーベック係数を測定し, 四探針測定で得られている電気伝導率からパワーファクターを算出したが、KxC60薄膜と同様に、ゼーベック係数と電気伝導率とがトレードオフの関係であることがわかった。薄膜のグレインサイズ(数ミクロン)に対して上記2つの物性値を測定する際の電極パッド間の距離が0.1 mmのため、粒界が支配的になっていることが原因と考えられる。そのため、現在、電極間距離を縮小して再度測定を行う予定である。
    (2) 特異反応場機能の開拓
    CO2の固定化および有価物質への変換として、水素(H2)とCO2との反応によるギ酸(HCOOH)の生成について検討した。ギ酸は水素キャリアとして注目されている物質である。UHVチャンバーにH2とCO2を1D凹凸C60ポリマー薄膜に導入し、in situで赤外分光測定を行い、理論スペクトルとを比較した結果、室温ではフリーのギ酸に対応するピークは観測されなかったが、新たなピークが現れた。ギ酸がC60ポリマーに吸着している可能性もあり、現在、可能性のあるモデル構造から理論IRスペクトルを計算中である。
    また、得られた成果については、今年度、国際雑誌Carbon 152, 241 (2019)、Carbon 152, 882 (2019)、Nanotechnology 31, 115701 (2020)に掲載され、現在1報投稿中である。
    上記検討課題は想定内の課題であるため、その解決策も分かっているため、概ねクリアできると考えられる。
    (1) 熱電変換機能の開拓
    前年度は、C60薄膜に電子線照射により1D凹凸C60ポリマー薄膜を形成し, ゼーベック係数と電気伝導率をin situ測定したが、グレインサイズより大きな電極間で測定認め、粒界の影響により、薄膜の真の物性値が測定できなかった。今年度は、電極間距離をグレインサイズ程度まで小さくすることで、薄膜由来の真のゼーベック係数と電気伝導率を測定し、1993年に理論予測されている巨大ZTを発現するか検証する。
    2 特異反応場機能の開拓
    今年度は、前年度In situ超高真空FT-IR装置に取り付けた反応性ガス導入機構および質量分析計測器を用いて、 固定化 したCO2を有用物質(R-OH, R-COOHなど)に変換するために, H2ガスを導入し、室温でギ酸が生成するかを検討した。新たなIRピークが観測されたが、フリーのギ酸そのもののIRピークとは異なることから、ギ酸とC60ポリマーとの相互作用したモデル構造を用いた理論スペクトルを算出し、生成物の同定を行う。また、新たに反応性ガス(たとえば、メタンやエタン)を導入し, 炭酸イオンから有用物質への変換を試みる。

     既往のナノカーボン材料(フラーレン, ナノチューブ, グラフェン)とは異なる構造と物性(たとえば,電子物性に対する幾何曲率効果)を示す日本オリジナルの1次元(1D)金属凹凸周期曲面構造C60ポリマー(1D凹凸C60ポリマー)薄膜について,
    ① 超高真空(UHV)下でマイクロプローバを用いてゼーベック係数を測定し, 四探針測定で得られている電気伝導率及び熱伝導率(外部分析)の結果と合わせて熱電変換性能指数ZTを算出し, 1993年に理論予測されているZTの飛躍的な向上の有無を,

    We have used ab initio simulation, by which without any experimental parameters, atomic structures and physico-chemical properties in any materials could be estimated, and we applied it to penta-graphene structures with several atomic species. Since this geometric structure realizes negative Poisson's ratio in general, we applied to macroscopic archtechure research. We have also studied properties of materials related to normal graphene, and clearly understood the specific properties in penta-graphene. To understand correctly the chemical reactions, including catalytic reaction, it is necessary to keep electronic states excited. We have implemented as the first trial this time dependent Shroedinger equation solver into our original ab initio simulation program TOMBO.
