    In environments involving a variety of connected devices and systems, there is an ever-increasing demand for automated adaptation. To ensure that all threats are identified and manageable in such environments, quality assurance activities including testing and inspections in design-time should focus on assessing the reliability of critical adaptations, which may threaten life, economic property, or important information. This work proposes an approach for identifying and evaluating critical adaptations on the basis of their automation level, reliability, detectability, and recoverability by decomposing adaptations into four stages: monitor, analyze, plan, and execute. This work also empirically evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed approach by assessing a real safety-critical telecommunication system with critical adaptation features and comparing the results with the STAMP (System Theoretic Accident Model and Processes)/STPA (System-Theoretic Process Analysis) approach. The results of the evaluation indicated that the proposed approach could assess critical adaptation features provided by the system with reasonable effort. Additionally, structured views provided by the proposed approach enable efficient quality assurance activities. In the evaluation, the proposed approach achieves similar results to the STAMP/STPA approach but requires 33% less effort.

    Identifying the origins of potentially injected defects in implementation activities during requirement analysis and design activities is challenging, but leads to the prevention of defects, which are burdensome to correct. This study investigates whether such defect injection risks can be generalized and defined by risk occurrence conditions of the objects in the existing analysis and design diagrams and whether the defined defect injection risks are applicable to other analysis and design diagrams. Specifically, we identify defect categories, which are injected after analysis and design activities and subsequently detected during system testing of commercial products developed at Sony. Then, regarding the defect categories as the exposed defect injection risks, we define defect injection risks with the objects defined in the analysis and design diagrams of the products. Each defect injection risk consists of risk description, diagram type, and occurrence conditions of objects in the diagrams. Afterwards, we evaluate whether the defined defect injection risks appear in the analysis and design diagrams of three different products under development and five publicly available analysis and design diagrams. The results showed that three defect injection risks were defined and that the two risks appear in the analysis and design diagrams of the three products and the remaining one appears in the analysis and design diagrams of two products. The results also showed that one defect injection risk is present in all five publicly available analysis and design diagrams, and two risks appear in four of the diagrams. The three defect injection risks are general enough to identify risks in analysis and design diagrams from other domains. Developers can be more cautious about the risks and prevent defect injections with the defect injection risks.

    <p>Game loops in the existing source code must be identified prior to updating, adding, or modifying game rules or game objects in games software. This paper proposes a static analysis method predicting game loop candidates with likelihood ranks by focusing on the characteristics of game loops. The proposed method is evaluated with ten publicly available games in Github. For eight of the games, actual game loops were predicted: five had an actual game loop listed at the top of the candidates, while the other three had an actual game loop within the top 11 results.</p>

    A software requirements specification (SRS) is a detailed description of a software system to be developed. This paper proposes and evaluates a lightweight review approach called value-oriented review (VOR) to detect defects in SRS. This approach comprises setting core values based on SRS and detecting the defects disturbing the core values. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conducted a controlled experiment to investigate whether reviewers could identify and record the core values based on SRS and find defects disturbing the core values. Results of the evaluation with 56 software engineers showed that 91% of the reviewers identified appropriate core values and 82% of the reviewers detected defects based on the identified core values. Furthermore, the average number of defects detected using the proposed approach was slightly smaller than that detected using perspective-based reading (PBR); however, PBR requires defining review scenarios before attempting to detect any defects. The results also demonstrated that the proposed approach helped reviewers detect the omission defects, which are more difficult to detect from SRS than defects because of ambiguity or incorrect requirements.

    The vulnerability of the security of the software codes has often caused by invalid input. Therefore, software security greatly depends on the safety of module inputs. In this paper, we propose a method to ensure the code security by building Assurance cases based on the relationship between input specifications and code portions of each module. In addition, a case study is accomplished to apply the proposed method for the published vulnerability of an OSS. The result shows that the method can detect the vulnerability of the OSS by the absence of necessary evidence in the developed assurance case based on the input specifications and portions of the OSS code.

    This paper proposes an extended Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) method to capture the interaction between physical and computational elements. Autonomous control of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), such as launch vehicle and spacecraft, has the interaction of physical and computational elements. Therefore, it is important to analyze failure scenarios caused by the interaction between physical and computational elements. When analysts accurately capture and analyze dynamic behaviors such as state changes and interaction during and after a failure as a failure scenario, the failure scenario promotes an accurate understanding of system failure and effects, helps appropriate design improvements. However, it is not easy to analyze CPS's failure scenarios involving many factors using conventional FMEA, which is because FMEA focuses on each element. The proposed method sequentially identifies failure modes and failure scenarios for combinations of elements using three models. The first model is the input-output Structural Model (SM), which identifies specifications that have interaction between physical and computational elements. The second model is Tree Model extended from Goal Structuring Notation (GSN), which supports analysis in guiding combinations of conditions from the perspective of a system's hierarchy. The third is a sequence model that shows failure scenarios, and Event Sequence Diagram (ESD) visualizes the state transitions of elements, including the passage of time. As a result of applying the proposed method to four CPS spacecraft systems, the number of failure modes, including the interaction between physical and computational elements, increased 2 to 8 times that when using conventional FMEA worksheets and guidewords about Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP).
