    This research was aiming at the creation of new fused fused π-conjugated polymers in which aromatic rings are fused by two or more multiple bonds, and the control of those structure and function by developing new elementary reactions and catalysis. The key in this study is how to construct a π-conjugated system in which two or more C (sp2) -C (sp2) bonds in one elementary reaction process. With these backgrounds in hand, we succeeded in the development of several new reactions and new catalytic systems called annulative π-expansion (APEX) reactions that can realize these. Through this reaction, it became possible to continuously construct fused π-conjugated molecules in a ladder polymer-like fashion, and we succeeded in the efficient synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in which multiple benzene rings were linked.

    In this research , we investigated the synthesis of novel organic nanotubes containing various aromatic rings, structure, diameter and functions by the "Helix-to-Tube method". After designing the various diethynylarene monomers that have various arylene main chains and chiral amide side chains, we successfully synthesized each monomer and polymerized these by Glaser-Hay coupling to obtain poly(arylenediethnylene)s (poly-ADEs). In the circular dichromic spectra of poly-ADEs, the Cotton-effects were found in common organic solvents, which implied the formation of chiral helical folders as expected. Among synthesized poly-ADEs, a helical polymer having pyridine cores could be transformed to the corresponding organic nanotube by light-irradiated cross-linking reaction under the concept of "Helix-to-Tube method".

    本年度は縮環π拡張(APEX)重合をさらに発展させることに成功し、リビング性を付与したリビングAPEX重合を新たに開発することができた。本反応は、開始剤にフェナントレンを用い、モノマーにベンゾナフトシロールを用い、パラジウム塩、銀塩、オルトクロラニル存在化で効率的に進行することがわかった。反応開始段階では、APEX反応に活性なK領域をもつフェナントレンのAPEX反応によってより大きな多環芳香族炭化水素の中間体が生成する。この中間体は成長末端に新たにK領域が出現するため、逐次的なAPEX反応、すなわちAPEX重合が進行するということが判明した。さらに本反応はリビング性を兼ね備えており、分散度を低く抑えることができる。フェナントレンとモノマーの配合比率を変えるだけで、分子量3000から150000万程度の低分散fjord型GNRを自在に合成することが可能となった。また、合成したfjord型GNRは脱水素環化反応によってN = 8のarmchair型GNRへと定量的に変換することが可能であり、ラマン分光スペクトル測定などによってのぞみのGNRが合成できていることが判明した。本リビングAPEX重合法は、これまで化学的・物理的な合成法では達成不可能であった幅・長さ・構造を精密に制御したGNRの世界で初めての合成手法であり、多環芳香族炭化水素など不活性芳香族化合物を用いたはじめてのリビング直接アリール化重合である。今後本重合法を用いた様々なGNRの精密合成に大きな期待がもたれる。

    In this work, we developed a novel synthetic methodology, ‘Annulative π-Extension (APEX)’, for the efficient synthesis of π-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nanographenes, and π-extended heteroaromatics, which gather immense intrest in the field of synthetic chemistry and materials science. Newly developed palladium-catalyzed APEX systems enabled the one-step synthesis of those π-extended aromatics by directly using unfunctionalized PAHs and heteroaromatics. Sequential annulative π-extension, so-called APEX polymerization, was also possible to provide structurally uniform graphene nanoribbons in a single operation.
