We propose a new approach to nanoscience and technology for ionic liquids (ILs): molecular beam deposition of IL in ultrahigh vacuum by using a continuous wave infrared (CW-IR) laser deposition technique. This approach has made it possible to prepare a variety of "nano-IL" with the given composition on the substrate: a nanodroplet, on one hand, the volume of which goes down to 1 aL and, on the other hand, an ultrathin film with a thickness to several 100 nm or less. The result of fractional distillation of a binary mixture of ILs, investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance as well as electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, indicates that this deposition process is based on the thermal evaporation of ILs, and thus this process also can be used as a new purification method of ILs in vacuum. Furthermore, the fabrication of binary mixture droplets of two ILs on the substrate by alternating deposition of two ILs was demonstrated; the homogeneity of the composition was confirmed even for one single droplet by high-spatial-resolution Raman spectroscopy. © 2010 American Chemical Society.

Dielectric and soft-mode behaviors of AgTaO<inf>3</inf> Reviewed

The synthesis difficulty on AgTaO3 ceramic has been surmounted by the high oxygen-pressure sintering. In this study, the synthesized sample was investigated by both dielectric and micro-Raman measurements in detail. As no dielectric anomaly was observed between 2.2 and 694 K, the previously proposed ferroelectric phase transition from R3c to R 3̄ c at 170 K upon heating is not supported by our study whereas the quantum paraelectric ground state with R 3̄ c symmetry is more consistent with our experimental findings. Also, it is observed that the phase transition from this rhombohedral ground state to the higher-temperature monoclinic phase occurs at 667 K is purely soft-mode driven. Taking account the observation of additional Raman modes, at least up to 360 K, the existence of symmetry-breaking regions in the quantum paraelectric matrix is also discussed. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

P-E hysteresis loop was measured for stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric NaNbO3. The untypical applied-field dependence of the hysteresis can be interpreted by the strong pinning effect on the domain reversal. The non-stoichiometry of the sample was found to enhance the pinning effect. It is finally concluded that NaNbO3 is intrinsically ferroelectric. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

The Raman scattering study was performed on BiFeO3 (BFO) both for polycrystal and single crystal forms. BFO was found to be easily damaged even by the weak power of the incident laser. The decomposition of BFO under the laser irradiation was investigated by examining the position dependence of the Raman spectrum over the irradiation area. Finally, we discuss the problem for the Raman measurement on BFO at the high-temperature region.

We performed a comprehensive investigation on the polarization evolution, lattice dynamics, and microscopic structural evolution of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3(PMN) relaxor by polarization measurements, Raman scatterings and TEM. We find that the huge dielectric response in a broad temperature range in PMN can be attributed to the polarization reorientation effects. We also show that PMN relaxor is essentially a nanosized ferroelectric material with multiscale inhomogeneities of domain structure in addition to the well-known inhomogeneities of chemical composition and local symmetry.
