  1. Unequal but not separate: Emergence of rich–poor cooperation in resource exchange Reviewed

Addressing inequality is a critical challenge for society as a whole and requires sustained efforts to promote fairness and opportunity for all. Filling in the resource gap across social classes is essential in reducing inequality. Previous studies have revealed that ingroup favouritism hinders the rich from cooperating with the poor and expands the wealth gap. Nevertheless, how to find ways of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor remains an open question. Inducing rich–poor cooperation could be effective in eliciting resource flow across classes. In this study, two experiments using a modified Prisoner's Dilemma game were conducted in Japan (N = 213) and China (N = 150) to examine whether highlighting partners' cooperativeness under permeable group boundaries induces rich–poor cooperation. All participants were allocated to the rich group and participated in the game with programmed rich- or poor-group partner bots, whose cooperation rates were manipulated. Despite the initial resource disparities between participants and the partner bots, participants were more likely to select and cooperate with cooperative poor-group partners than with non-cooperative rich-group partners. Generalized trust played an important role in the enhancement of rich–poor cooperation. The findings shed light on the possibility of reducing inequality and promoting social mobility in society.

Humans seek to select and exchange resources with wealthy partners for greater benefits. In this study, we examined whether implementing the “petty favor” option (giving a small amount of resources to interaction partners prior to resource provision to pooled accounts) from rich to cooperative poor group members facilitates rich-poor selection and cooperation. In total, 216 participants were allocated to the rich group and played a repeated two-person public goods game with selfish rich or cooperative poor partner bots. Participants preferred to use the “petty favor” options on cooperative poor partners and contribute a large amount of resources toward public good. The findings suggest that the provision of petty favors motivates providers to exchange more resources with cooperators beyond the existing rich-poor boundary.

  4. Is Mentalizing Essential to Predict Human Network Size? Reexamining the Social Brain Hypothesis From a Social Network Perspective

One central question in social science and evolutionary anthropology is how humans can form and maintain large social networks. The social brain hypothesis argues that humans use their mentalizing ability to read others’ minds for the development of dyadic relationships in layered social networks. However, previous empirical studies have not directly examined the association between mentalizing and the size of the active network located at the outermost layer. By introducing a social network perspective, we predicted that individuals use their mentalizing ability not only to form and maintain dyadic relationships but also to belong to multiple communities, which indirectly expands the active network size. We collected data from undergraduates in Japan (N = 175) to examine how mentalizing is linked to the size of online social networks. Mentalizing was positively associated with the number of dyads but not with the number of communities and the active network size. These findings suggest that the social brain hypothesis has limited validity, and there is a need for more careful explanations surrounding the psychological and structural underpinnings of large human social networks.

  5. Does Mental Simulation Decrease the Empathy Gap in Help-Seeking?

Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

People hesitate to seek help when they perceive the cost of helping as high. In general, help-seekers overestimate the cost of helping because of errors in perspective-taking. We examined whether three processes of mental simulation (recalling an experience of providing help, of rejecting a request for help, and of sensing the empathy gap) would decrease the cost of helping perceived by help-seekers. Participants underwent one of the simulations or no simulation (control condition), read two scenarios that described helping and help-seeking, and rated the perceived cost of helping in the scenarios. Contrary to the prediction, simulations did not decrease the cost of helping perceived by help-seekers. Recalling an experience of rejecting requests also increased the perceived cost of helping in unemployment scenarios. The post hoc analysis for controlling the depressive mood in depression scenarios showed that the cost of helping from the helper's perspective decreased, whereas that from the help-seekers remained the same under the empathy-gap simulation condition. These results suggest that realizing the asymmetry between helpers and help-seekers may be counterproductive in help-seeking and widen the empathy gap.

The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count Dictionary 2015 (LIWC2015) is a standard text analysis dictionary that quantifies the linguistic and psychometric properties of English words. A Japanese version of the LIWC2015 dictionary (J-LIWC2015) has been expected in the fields of natural language processing and cross-cultural research. This study aims to create the J-LIWC2015 through systematic investigations of the original dictionary and Japanese corpora. The entire LIWC2015 dictionary was initially subjected to human and machine translation into Japanese. After verifying the frequency of use of the words in large corpora, frequent words and phrases that are unique to Japanese were added to the dictionary, followed by recategorization by psychologists. The updated dictionary indicated good internal consistency, semantic equivalence with the original LIWC2015 dictionary, and good construct validity in each category. The evidence suggests that the J-LIWC2015 dictionary is a powerful research tool in computational social science to scrutinize the psychological processes behind Japanese texts and promote standardized cross-cultural investigations in combination with LIWC dictionaries in different languages.

Generalized trust relieves individuals in a socially uncertain situation from dyadic constraints of existing ties and helps them change ties with other individuals to acquire better resources. However, much evidence in the emancipation role of generalized trust as a booster of new relationship formation has been limited to laboratory experiments or cross-sectional surveys. We conducted a four-wave longitudinal survey to test whether individuals high in generalized trust actively switch ties and form open triads in dynamic social networks. Stochastic Actor-Oriented Models were employed to analyze structural changes in advice and personal discussion networks among first-year undergraduates. Results showed the predicted patterns of social selection processes based on generalized trust when the dynamics of the two networks were analyzed simultaneously: only in the advice network, individuals high in generalized trust tended to terminate existing ties, create new ties, and show a decreasing trend toward forming close triads when the degree of local clustering was large. Effective tie-formation strategies of individuals high in generalized trust in a multiplex network structure are discussed.

<p>On social media, a variety of information is posted and shared in real time on a daily basis. Many of these posts relate to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and consumer life. Such spontaneous “real voices” (texts) from consumers contain potential signals for quantitatively understanding consumer psychology and behavior in the pandemic. In this study, we quantify consumer psychology and behavior from large-scale social data on Twitter, and discuss analytical methods and cases to gain insights into the resale phenomenon in the pandemic. Specifically, by applying our psychological category dictionary “J-LIWC” and moral foundation dictionary “J-MFD” to the above data, we were able to visualize that different consumer emotions were evoked depending on the types of product resold, such as toilet paper or masks, and what kind of moral violation consumers perceived about the resale. Furthermore, by analyzing the above data using a word co-occurrence network, we observed trends in products resoled and changes in purchasing behavior linked to the pandemic’s progression. These findings provide a hint for reconstructing the society and economy toward the post-corona era.</p>

This study investigated the reliability and validity of the Japanese versions of the Fear of Happiness Scale and the Fragility of Happiness Scale. The scales were administered to 341 Japanese undergraduates. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that, like the original versions, the Japanese Fear of Happiness Scale and the Fragility of Happiness Scale each had a one-factor structure. The two scales also each had good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity. Furthermore, the scales showed incremental validity by predicting psychological elements (life satisfaction, depression, anxiety, stress) better than the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and the behavioral activation system (BAS). The results of the present study revealed that the Fear of Happiness Scale and the Fragility of Happiness Scale had an adequate reliability and validity in this Japanese group.

<p>Charitable donations play an important role in the upliftment of a society. This study examines how to facilitate donations by subjective value of the money. Previous studies have shown that people generally discount delayed value of a reward with delay of receipt. We conducted an online experiment in which an extra reward was handed out by lottery to participants and they were asked to make a judgment on the extra reward, and used a 3 (amount of extra reward: 50/500/1000 yen) × 2 (delay: a day/a month) design resulting in six conditions. We hypothesized that the smaller the amount of an extra reward and the more it is delayed, the lower the subjective value of the reward becomes, and the more people would be willing to donate. Two-hundred and two undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of the six conditions. They were asked to answer a questionnaire measuring participants' delay-discounting rates, social value orientation (SVO), subjective socioeconomic status (subjective SES), and money beliefs. They were then told they had received an extra reward and were required to choose one of three options for the delayed extra reward: receive, reject, or donate. The results showed that a smaller extra reward and higher delay-discounting rates increased donation choice, but we could not obtain the effect of the delay in time until the participants received the extra reward. Therefore, we concluded that reducing the subjective value of the money could promote donation.</p>

<p>The purpose of this study is to examine what factors motivate Twitter users to use a protected account and how these factors relate to self-disclose on their profile pages. Based on the interviews with 14 undergraduates using Twitter, we developed a questionnaire measuring motivations to use privacy settings on Twitter. We then conducted a survey on 153 undergraduates to report their Twitter usage and personal information disclosed online. Exploratory factor analysis identified three motivational factors to use privacy settings on Twitter: the boundary control for self-disclosure, the avoidance of troubles, and social influence. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to predict which motivational factors prevent or promote users to put personal information on their profile accessible in public. The boundary control motivation was negatively related to the disclosure of real names in public. In contrast, the social influence motivation was positively related to the disclosure of private information, such as facial photos on the public profile. Lower graders and females were also likely to disclose in public than higher graders and males, respectively. The current study implies that motivational factors other than privacy concerns lead people to protect or disclose themselves on social networking services.</p>

<p>We introduce the concept of overchoosing as a fundamental mechanism of tie formation in directed social networks. The parameter represents a tendency for actors to send a lot of ties but receive few nominations back, something which implies the importance of modeling reciprocity violation as a basic tie-formation process. Analyzing large friendship network data (N = 1,575) by the stochastic actor-oriented models revealed that, under controlling for several endogenous tie formation processes, the parameter captured the formation of open triads and substantially improved the goodness of fit of the model to the data.</p>

<p>Tackling loneliness is a challenging task in modern society. Recent research has focused primarily on the physiological nature of loneliness. However, the multifaceted psychological construct is clearly more than just a negative emotion. The virtue of helping each other can be undermined by the process in which loneliness breeds maladaptive social perception and behavior that also facilitate the avoidance of lonely individuals. To cut off the vicious cycle of loneliness, comprehending the dynamic nature of loneliness and social networks through the lens of social information processing is important. After introducing the conceptualization of loneliness, this paper discusses the process by which individuals feel isolated in dyadic/networked social connections, the social selection and influence mechanisms of loneliness, the distinction between loneliness and solitude, the current advances and limitation of loneliness interventions, and the importance of providing opportunities for social interactions for the lonely to deal with this modern disease.</p>

<p>Repeated help-seeking from the same helper produces gradually stronger hesitation. Therefore, switching helpers in one’s social network could be an effective strategy. We conducted an online experiment to examine whether people feel less stressed if they switch helpers in a repeated help-seeking situation. After reading a vignette about a stressful situation (depression or unemployment), participants judged the level of stress and chose a helper in their social network. Participants then received feedback that the situation had not improved even after help had been given and repeated the choice five times. The results showed that participants perceived lower stress in both depression and unemployment situations if they sought help from a greater number of helpers after controlling for social network size and diversity of helpers. The effectiveness of switching helpers and its mechanisms are discussed.</p>

<p>Ostracism is a contradicted social action because it has been widely adopted as a legal sanction but is also considered to be excessive enforcement. In the present study, we conducted a scenario-based experiment to examine the psychological process underlying the endorsement of ostracism in school settings. We focused on three general rationales to justify the sanction: a general prevention to protect public welfare (utilitarianism); a counter to deviance from social norms (retributivism); and a type of education to rehabilitate a perpetrator (moral education). The results showed that utilitarianism was more effective in justifying ostracism than retributivism or moral education. Further, preferences towards ostracism based in utilitarianism were less susceptible to influence from others. These findings indicate people’s general preference for the protection of public welfare over the segregation of wrongdoers.</p>

People who receive kindness tend to feel gratitude and act in a prosocial manner toward third persons (i.e., paying it forward). Combining the separate evidence that (a) gratitude leads to the formation of strong psychological bonds from a beneficiary to a benefactor and that (b) people become more prosocial toward strangers when the need for relatedness (NFR) is satisfied, two online experiments were conducted to examine if NFR satisfaction mediates the association between gratitude and prosocial behavior toward third persons. After evoking gratitude by recalling past experiences (Study 1) or writing a letter to someone (Study 2), participants were asked to make a donation from their remuneration for the experiment to a charity organization. As predicted, emotional manipulation promoted donation via feelings of gratitude and satisfied NFR. Implications of the current model for integrating previous findings are discussed.

Previous studies have shown that people high in group identity are likely to cooperate with other group members. This study examines if mortality salience increases altruism among those low in group identity in impermeable groups. Results showed that participants low in group identity in the mortality salience condition behaved altruistically when the group permeability was low. Thus, people low in group identity adopt the strategy of being more altruistic only if it is difficult to leave the group. This suggests that when the group is impermeable, people low in group identity have no option but to behave altruistically to justify their cultural world-view in the group due to the difficulty to moving to other group.

<p>This study investigated the effect of a player's regulatory focus on his/her preference for cooperation and prosociality in a social dilemma situation. After the manipulation of regulatory focus, participants chose cooperation (remaining silent) or defection (betrayal) in simultaneous and sequential Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) tasks based on a traditional scenario of prison sentence rewards. Participants in the prevention focus condition showed more defection than did those in the promotion focus and the control conditions. In the sequential PD task, a greater number of participants in the prevention focus condition used an egoistic strategy (<i>i.e.</i>, consistent defection) as the second movers than did those in the promotion focus and the control conditions, who tended to use a conditional cooperation strategy. These findings suggest that prevention-focused players show a less strong preference for cooperation and behave more selfishly when the pay-off matrix is loss-framed.</p>

This study aims to address the echo chamber phenomenon and advocate for principles that foster information diversity. To fulfill this objective, we amassed extensive social media data to explore various echo chambers, encompassing areas like U.S. politics, LGBT issues, food preference, and the anti-vaccine movement. This investigation facilitated our understanding of how information environments become homogenized and fragmented. Based on these insights, we executed an experiment to further investigate the elements that aid in the propagation of misinformation. Our observations highlighted an uptick in the usage of emotionally charged, negative, and overemphatic language. These findings provide the basis for new social networking principles that promote information diversity.

In this study, we examined whether executive function, as a cognitive neural system that controls individual thinking and behavior, facilitates cooperation with others in diverse groups with different social rules. We conducted newly developed group-switching experiments with online samples in Japan, Australia and the United States. The results revealed that the ability to learn and switch rules plays an important role in interactions in groups with different rules.

In this study, we examined the hypothesis that executive function, a cognitive system that needs to understand different norms and social rules across groups, plays an important role in the strategic formation of "open" social networks. We ran two experiments in undergraduate and crowdsourcing samples and revealed that individuals high in task-switching ability were likely to belong to the greater number of communities, even when controlling for individual factors such as extraversion and self-monitoring tendencies.

This longitudinal research investigated the process of social isolation in a social network in relation to maladaptive interpersonal reactions driven by negative implicit self-esteem. The data were collected from first-year undergraduates four times in a year. Analysis based on the stochastic actor-oriented model revealed that, under controlling for structural effects on relationship formation, high implicit self-esteem inhibited the expansion of social networks for information-seeking, and explicit self-esteem was positively associated with implicit self-esteem over time. The result implies that negative implicit self-esteem does not cause exclusion from others, but rather increase inactivity in relationship construction; and interventions to explicit self-esteem may be effective to the recovery of negative implicit self-esteem.
