    Sharing experience is a fundamental human social cognition. Since visual experience is a mental state directed toward the world, we hypothesized that sharing visual experience is mediated by joint attention for sharing directedness and mentalizing for mental state inferences. We conducted a hyperscanning fMRI with 44 healthy adult volunteers to test this hypothesis. We employed spoken language-cued spatial and feature-based joint attention tasks. The initiator attracts the partner's attention by a verbal command to a spatial location or an object feature to which the responder directs their attention. Pair-specific inter-individual neural synchronization of task-specific activities was found in the right anterior insular cortex (AIC)-inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) complex, the core node of joint attention and salience network, and the right posterior superior temporal sulcus, which represents the shared categories of the target. The right AIC-IFG also showed inter-individual synchronization of the residual time-series data, along with the right temporoparietal junction and dorso-medial prefrontal cortex-the core components for mentalization and the default mode network. This background synchronization represents sharing the belief of sharing the situation. Thus, shared visual experiences are represented by coherent coordination between the default mode network and salience network linked through the right AIC-IFG.

    The anterior insula and rolandic operculum are key regions for flavour perception in the human brain; however, it is unclear how taste and congruent retronasal smell are perceived as flavours. The multisensory integration required for sour flavour perception has rarely been studied; therefore, we investigated the brain responses to taste and smell in the sour flavour-processing network in 35 young healthy adults. We aimed to characterise the brain response to three stimulations applied in the oral cavity—sour taste, retronasal smell of mango, and combined flavour of both—using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Effective connectivity of the flavour-processing network and modulatory effect from taste and smell were analysed. Flavour stimulation activated middle insula and olfactory tubercle (primary taste and olfactory cortices, respectively); anterior insula and rolandic operculum, which are associated with multisensory integration; and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, a secondary cortex for flavour perception. Dynamic causal modelling demonstrated that neural taste and smell signals were integrated at anterior insula and rolandic operculum. These findings elucidated how neural signals triggered by sour taste and smell presented in liquid form interact in the brain, which may underpin the neurobiology of food appreciation. Our study thus demonstrated the integration and synergy of taste and smell.

    <p>Most of social brain studies so far have targeted the individual brain, however, communication is real-time, dynamic, and interactive in real world. Hyperscan research, which targets multiple persons with real interaction, is rapidly spreading in the researchers who place importance on this point. There are various types of brain activity measurement such as MRI, MEG, but recently, NIRS and EEG, which are easily able to construct experimental interactive situation, are used explosively. Nevertheless, current hyperscan research becomes confusing as the number of researches increases. The main reason for this is that the spatiotemporal characteristics of the measurement parameters are significantly different among equipment, and the analysis methods are also different, making it difficult to obtain a unified view. In this presentation, I will introduce some recent trend of hyperscan studies using several equipment, and discuss problem and future of this research field.</p>

    社会性の一側面が現れるコミュニケーション場面でのやりとりは、リアルタイム性を持ちダイナミックで相互作用的である。その神経基盤を探るため近年多くの研究がなされているが、実験デザインや用いる装置、解析手法の違いによりその統一的な理解にはほど遠い。また刻々と変化する関係性についての神経ダイナミクスを探る手法は手つかずである。そこで本研究では、さまざまな脳機能計測手法に適用できる二者相互作用課題を新たに考案・実施するとともに、階層的に組織化されたネットワークダイナミクスの視点を取り入れた解析法を開発し、二人称視点による自他相互作用神経メカニズムの統合的理解を目指す。
    本年度は,申請書の計画にしたがって,まずfMRI,NIRS,EEGそれぞれの装置から得られるデータの性質の再チェックを行った。その後,計画当初に予定していた,二人が見つめあった状態と,物体への特徴の共同注意課題が全ての装置のデータ取得に適応可能か検討した。これについては理論的な検討に加え実際に実験を行ってデータをみながら検討する予定であったが,コロナ禍でそれは難しくハイパースキャン実験を実施することはできなかった。物体への注意課題は以前fMRIを用いた実験を行ったが,この実験ではお互い口頭でのやりとりを行っていたため,これがEEG計測の際に大きなノイズとなることが予想される。視線移動も同じくEEG計測ではノイズ源となるため,いかに視線移動を少なくコミュニケーションを取るかがポイントとなる。そこで,選択肢を視覚的に提示し,また共同注意の答え合わせも視覚的にできないか,視野角をどの程度にすれば視線移動を少なくできるか,現在その検討を行っているところである。
    一方階層ネットワークダイナミクスの解析法についての検討は,手持ちのデータでも可能な部分があるため,本年度はそこからはじめることにした。手持ちのfMRIによる二者脳活動同時計測データを用い,まずは二者の関係が定常(課題遂行により変化しない)と仮定した際の,個人脳と二者間の脳活動の相関を求めるためのプラットフォームの作成を試みた。この際,個人の脳領域をどのように分割するか,各領域のデータをどのように要約するか,が問題となるため,さまざまな脳分割テンプレートとデータ要約方法を試し,プラットフォームとなるプログラムをほぼ完成させることができた。
    本年度は,研究開始早々にコロナ禍に見舞われ,ヒトを対象とした実験の実施が非常に難しかった。我々が行う実験は,二人の被験者に同時に来てもらい,EEGやNIRSの場合は装置を装着,fMRIの場合は隣接する二台のMRI装置に入ってもらう必要があり,さらに実験者も複数人で行わなければならず,他の心理実験や脳機能イメージング実験よりも実施のハードルが高い。この結果,被験者募集もままならず,実験者を被験者とするプレリミナリーなハイパースキャン実験を行うにも人員不足により叶わなかった。そのため,研究の方針を少し変更し,すでに手元にある過去の実験課題と実験データを用い,新たな実験系とデータ解析手法の開発に着手した。なおEEG実験ではプレリミナリーな課題による一人の被験者を対象とした実験は行うことができたため,そのデータの取得と解析を行った。ハイパースキャンの二者同時計測実験課題については,机上での作成はほぼ完成したため,それをプログラム化し試すところまで来ている。コロナ禍の状況次第ではあるが,来年度はハイパースキャンの実験実施にこぎ着けたいと考えている。またデータ解析手法についても,ベースとなるプラットフォームの作成はほぼ完成した。来年度は,この解析手法の更なるブラッシュアップを行い,さらにダイナミクスを扱えるよう展開していく予定である。
    コロナ禍の情勢がどのようになるか,また大学の方針によっても実験実施のタイミングを現時点で決定することは難しいが,今年度は何とかfMRI, NIRS, EEGによるハイパースキャン実験を実施し,研究の遅れを取り戻したいと考えている。ただし,通常通りの実験が困難であることも考え,同時に以下の対策を取ることにする。
    まず,データの性質が似ているNIRSとfMRIについては,すでにデータのあるfMRIのものを用いて新たなネットワークダイナミクスを扱える解析手法の開発に着手する。今年度はベースとなるfMRIデータ用のプラットフォームをほぼ完成させることができたので,これをさらに発展させる予定である。さらに,NIRSデータの解析によく用いられている二者の脳活動のウェーブレット相関解析についても再検討を行い,有用性があると判断した場合には,このプラットフォームに組み込むことを考えている。一方EEGデータに関しては以前プレリミナリーに取った数組の見つめあいのデータしか手元にない。しかしこれを使うことは可能なので,まずはこのデータを用いてEEGデータの特性をもう一度吟味し,どのような形で統一的な解析ができるか検討する。
    このような準備を並行して進めることで,この研究課題の目的である広範囲のハイパースキャン研究に適応可能な実験デザインの策定とネットワークダイナミクスの観点を取り入れた新たな解析手法の完成を目指す。
