We measured the neutron beam polarization of the BL05/NOP (Neutron Optics and Physics) beamline at J-PARC with an accuracy of less than 10-3 using polarized 3He gas as a neutron spin analyzer. Precise polarimetry of the neutron beam is necessary to understand the beamline optics as well as for the asymmetry measurements of the neutron beta decay, which are planned in this beamline. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. We have begun the development of an in-situ spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) system aiming to use it as a neutron spin filter for incident beam polarization at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). To use it, it is recommended that the optics be adjusted easily, have high stability, and have a small size. In this paper we improved our previous SEOP system aiming to use it in J-PARC and performed a neutron beam test at the JRR-3 NOP beamline to see the performance of the neutron spin filter (NSF). The polarization of the 3He gas reached 73%. This paper gives the present status of the development of in-situ SEOP system in J-PARC. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Polarized neutron spin filters are being developed based on spin-exchange optical pumping. In the present study a high-power diode laser (85 W) was used to excite Rb atoms and the laser linewidth was narrowed using an external cavity. The optics in the external cavity were designed by ray tracing. The ray-trace calculations demonstrated that a doublet lens in front of the laser eliminates aberrations. The maximum spectral peak height in the doublet optics was found to be 25% higher than for a singlet lens. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-density ultracold neutron (UCN) is commonly desired for the improvement of the experimental sensitivity to measure the electric dipole moment of neutrons. We discuss a method to suppress the decrease of the UCN density in transporting UCNs to the spatially separated storage volume by changing the UCN velocity synchronizing to the UCN time-of-flight. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. We have developed a prototype rotating-permanent magnet sextupole lens (named rot-PMSx) for more efficient experiments with neutron beams in time of flight (ToF) mode. This lens can modulate the focusing strength over range 1.5×104T/m2g′5.9×104T/ m2. Synchronization between the modulation and the beam pulse produces a focused beam without significant chromatic aberration. We anticipate that this lens could be utilized in focusing small angle neutron scattering (SANS) instruments for novel approach to high resolution SANS. We carried out experiments testing the principle of this lens at the very cold neutron (VCN) beamline (PF2) at Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), France. The focused beam image size at the detector was kept constant at the same beam size as the source (≈3mm) over a wavelength range of 30λ48 in focal length of ≈1.14m. The flux gain was about 12 relative to a beam without focusing, and the depth of focus was quite large. These results show the good performance of this lens and the system. Thereupon we have demonstrated the performance of this test bed for high resolution focusing of VCN-SANS for a well-studied softmatter sample; a deuterium oxide solution of Pluronic F127, an (PEO)100(PPO) 65(PEO)100 tri-block copolymer in deuterium oxide. The results of the focusing experiment and the focusing VCN-SANS are presented. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A pulsed neutron source facility will be constructed at Kyoto University, where the accelerated 3.5 MeV proton beam will bombard a Li or Be target to generate neutrons. The average current, the pulse width and the typical repetition rate are 100 μA, 100 μs and 70 Hz, respectively. The purposes of the system are neutron imaging, material science, fundamental physics, etc. This kind of compact facility, which can be distributed at modest cost, will help to incubate new ideas and promote growth of neutron science worldwide. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Filaggrin gene defects and the risk of developing allergic disorders

Filaggrin is a key protein that facilitates terminal differentiation of the epidermis and formation of the skin barrier. Mutations in the gene encoding filaggrin (FLG) have been identified as the cause of ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) and have been shown to be major predisposing factors for atopic dermatitis (AD). Approximately 40 loss-offunction FLG mutations have been identified in patients with ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) and/or atopic dermatitis (AD) in Europe and Asia. Major differences exist in the spectra of FLG mutations observed between different ancestral groups. Notably, prevalent FLG mutations are distinct between European and Asian populations. Many cohort studies on FLG mutations in AD have revealed that approximately 25-50% of AD patients harbour filaggrin mutations as a predisposing factor. In addition, FLG mutations are significantly associated with ADassociated asthma. The risk for developing allergic rhinitis is also significantly higher with a FLG mutation, both with and without accompanying AD. Recent studies have hypothesized that skin barrier defects caused by FLG mutations allows allergens to penetrate the epidermis and to interact with antigen-presenting cells, leading to the development of atopic disorders including asthma. The restoration of skin barrier function seems a feasible and promising strategy for prophylactic treatment of AD patients with FLG mutations. © 2011 Japanese Society of Allergology.

A gradient DC magnet is designed using 3D magnetic field analysis code. This magnet, referred to as a B0 magnet, is one of the key elements of a time-focusing device for ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) based on a radio frequency gradient flipper - a so-called rebuncher. The magnet generates a guide and a potential field that interacts with the magnetic moment of UCNs and its main body comprises a C-shaped yoke made from iron. A field gradient is generated by a pole arrangement that includes an anisotropic inter-pole, which causes the fringe field to be uniform in the longitudinal direction even when the pole gap distance changes. The designed magnet has the following properties: (1) a maximum B-field of 10 kGauss, decreasing to 2 kGauss at a longitudinal distance of 25 cm, with a gradient of less than 400 Gauss/cm, (2) variations in the fringe field along the y direction is less than 4% over a range of -3 cm≤ y ≤ 3 cm at any z position in the spin-flipping region. Tracking simulations show that the B0 magnet is capable of accepting UCNs in the velocity range 2.3∼3.3 m/s. © 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A polarized 3He neutron spin filter has been applied to polarization analysis on the small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer SANS-J-II at JRR-3. Measurements were taken on silver behenate, which has several coherent peaks in the small-angle region with a background of spin incoherent hydrogen scattering. Here we demonstrate that the coherent and spin incoherent scattering were successfully separated by the polarization analysis using the 3He spin filter on the instrument. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

We are developing a high-resolution small angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument utilizing pulsed white very cold neutrons (VCN) and modulating magnetic lens for focusing in time of flight (ToF) mode. The magnetic lens adopted new modulation method for focusing pulsed neutron beams over some wavelength range without chromatic aberration; the lens is composed of two concentric permanent magnet arrays in sextupole geometry and the rotation of outer array about fixed inner array provides sinusoidal field gradient modulation. We named this lens as rotating-Permanent Magnet Sextupole lens (rot-PMSx). We have fabricated the prototype of rot-PMSx with the bore diameter ø15 mm and the magnetic length 66 mm. The modulation range of magnetic field strength g inside the bore 1.5×104 T/m ≤ g ≤ 5.9×10 T/m2 and the repetition rate ≤ 25 Hz [1, 2]. We proved the focusing principle with it at PF2-VCN beam line in Institut Laue Langevin (ILL), France [3]. The focused beam image size was kept constant at the same beam size as the source (≈ 3 mm) over wavelength range of 30 Å ≤ λ ≤ 48 Å in focal length of ≈ 1.14 mm while the depth of focus was quite large. These results showed good performance of the rot-PMSx and we moved on to the demonstration of its performance as high-resolution VCN-f-SANS in this compact geometry of just 5 meters. We chose a tri-block copolymer poly(oxyeheylen-oxypropylene-oxyeheylen)(PEO100-PPO 65-PEO100) called Pluronic F127 as a sample, which has been well studied since 1990' [4]. The measureable q range of this system were 0.009 Å-1 ≤ q ≤ 0.3 Å-1 or 0.004 Å-1 q ≤ 0.08 Å-depending on the distances between the sample to detector 100 mm or 465 mm. The results of fitting these data to reasonable models were well consistent with one of same experiments carried out in the past. These results in two experiments are presented together.

Permanent magnets are superior to electromagnets in generating strong multipole magnetic fields. Their fields are sometimes stronger than those that can be generated by superconducting magnets with the same bore radius, when the number of poles are higher. Three fabricated multipoles including a quadrupole magnet for the ILC (International Linear Collider) final focus doublet, a quadrupole magnets as a spin filter for cold neutrons, and a sextupole magnet for neutron beam focusing are described. © 2006 IEEE.

A new beamline for a fundamental physics experiment has been built at the BL05 port in the Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF) in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), and the first neutron beam was delivered on December 9th, 2008. This beamline is designed using novel techniques of neutron optics, and it is termed “Neutron Optics and Physics (NOP)." The beam from the moderator is deflected by multi-channel supermirrors and split into three branches for individual experiments. Physics with cold neutrons at the NOP beamline is discussed.
