    In this study, we introduce a fast, scalable method to fabricate ultralight carbon nanotube (CNT) aerogels with a bulk density (ρ) lower than air, using a combustion process. Typical fabrication methods for ultralight nanocarbon aerogels (ρ ≤ 1.0 mg cm−3) often involve intricate steps, such as high-temperature annealing and thermal reduction. These processes are time-consuming and pose scalability challenges. Here, we propose a high-speed fabrication process for ultralight CNT aerogels by combusting cellulose nanofibers (CNF) as a sacrificial template. The combustion process for CNT/CNF composite aerogels in an open environment takes only a few seconds, and the fabricated CNT aerogels with a lower-than-air density (ρ ≥ 0.48 mg cm−3) have high light absorption and good thermal and mechanical stability. We further illustrate the capability of these ultralight CNT aerogels to achieve levitation upon heating like a hot air balloon. Ultralight CNT aerogels capable of levitation by heating, fabricated by our fast and scalable method, hold the potential to replace traditional motor-driven unmanned aerial vehicles and conventional stratospheric platforms, such as high-altitude balloons, with sunlight-driven materials.

    Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic resin widely used in various industrial applications. However, the flammability of PP is a severe drawback that lowers operational safety. This study demonstrates the development of flame-retardant PP. The co-adding with various solid acids and a hindered N-alkoxy amine (NOR116 – Flamestab® NOR 116 FF) affects the combustion behavior of PP in a vertical flame test. The co-adding of silica alumina (SA) and NOR116 with PP promoted the melt drip, suppressed upward combustion heat, and shorter the combustion time. The decomposition products of NOR116 induced the cleavage of the main chain of PP, and it quenched the radicals on the surface of the SA particles because SA has abundant acidic sites and large pores, facilitating the adsorption of a substantial quantity of NOR116. The molecular weight of PP was controlled to 103 ~ 104 before the combustion to achieve an increase in the melt flow ability and suppress the upward combustion. Furthermore, a small amount of a halogen-based flame retardant was incorporated into the PP/SA/NOR116 sample, and the specimens could instantly self-extinguish on the gas phase by radical trap.

    Absorbing low-frequency sound below 1000 Hz with an ultralight material is a critical challenge. Nanofibrous sound-absorbing materials have many interfaces for air-borne sound loss. In addition, nanofibers with a high elastic modulus can increase the loss of sound propagating in the solid, enabling good, low-frequency sound absorption. Herein, a composite aerogel based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as an ultralight material that effectively absorbs low-frequency sound is reported. This ultralight aerogel has a hierarchical porous structure composed of high-modulus SWCNT–CMC composite nanofibers. A sample with an areal density of 20 mg cm−2 (bulk density: 5 mg cm−3, thickness: 39 mm) achieves a sound-absorption coefficient of 0.44 at 500 Hz. The sound-absorption behavior is sufficiently described by the Biot–Johnson–Champoux–Allard model, indicating the significant effect of the high elastic modulus of the nanofibers on the sound-absorption performance. The article presents a new design principle for ultralight materials with low-frequency sound absorption that takes into consideration both the porous structure and the elastic modulus of the material framework.

    Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) were successfully synthesized from the mixture of used motor oil and benzene via a solution plasma process (SPP). The synthesis was achieved within a single step at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The effects of mixing ratio between used motor oil and benzene on the physical and chemical properties of CNPs were investigated by means of field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. The results revealed that there were no significant changes in morphological feature and chemical functional groups on CNPs at different mixing ratios. The CNPs exhibited the aggregates of fine particles with the diameter of about 20-30 nm. The crystallinity of CNPs was found to be slightly increased when synthesized under the presence of used motor oil, possibly due to the effect of aliphatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in used motor oil. We expect that the conversion of used motor oil into CNPs by SPP could be another attractive way to add the value to used motor oil prior to disposing.

    The effect of the molecular weight of polymeric materials on combustion was examined by using paraffin and polyethylene (PE) as examples. From the result of the vertical firing experiments of such saturated hydrocarbons with greatly differing molecular weight we found that there is a region of molecular weights that do not support combustion because volatile gas components are hardly generated. This region ranges from 240 g/mol of the paraffin to about a 35000 g/mol, we found that PE of a Mw of about 35000 can exist as a liquid within a relatively wide temperature range from the melting point of 130°C to 400°C, which is the temperature where decomposition begins: it burns while melting. The viscosity of PE has a low temperature dependence and a high molecular weight dependence, so when the Mw exceeds 50000 the surface temperature, reaches 530°C, and PE thermally degradates violently and burns as it melts. These results suggest that there is a possibility that by controlling the molecular weight, the combustibility can also be controlled.

    We have created thermal management materials that can reversibly change thermal conductivity by using materials that elastically shrink and recover under compressive loading and unloading. A carbon nanotube-based material with a density of less than 10 mg/cm3 was fabricated by compositing it with polymeric materials. Surface treatment was applied to hydrophobize the material surface to increase the recovery rate of shrinkage and restoration. The thermal conductivities of these materials were evaluated to obtain a heat-transfer material in which solid heat transfer is dominant during compression and an insulating material in which gaseous heat transfer is dominant during unloading.

    β-C3N4 is expected to have a potential to demonstrate the hardness superior to diamond. However, no researchers have reported the synthesis of β-C3N4. In this study, we aimed to synthesize β-C3N4 by solution plasma (SP). SEM observations and XRD analysis showed the hexagonal hollow structure and crystal structure, respectively. The sheet resistance is around 3200 (Ω/Sq.) which is closer to the one of the insulator. This indicates it is composed of sp3 chemical bonding state, which originates from the raw material. The thermal decomposition easily occurred as same as polymer by DSC. The type of adsorption was type III defined by IUPAC. The micropore is crucial for the adsorption of gas on this material. It showed hundredth part of the specific surface area compared to activated carbon. In the type of adsorption, the interaction between gas and solid is strong. Finally, we cannot get β-C3N4, but can get the unexpected materials with hexagonal hollow structure.
