本研究の目的は、明治中期から第二次大戦後初期にいたる間の、私立大学がもつ人的ネットワークの実態を、当該時期の大学ガバナンスに関わる会議体のメンバーおよび同窓会役員の属性分析によって明らかにしていくことである。 分析は1945年の第二次世界大戦敗戦時に大学としての法的地位をもっていた27の私立大学を対象として、明治期中期から昭和戦後期まで5時点についておこなう。
当該年度においては、戦前期から戦後期にかけてのいくつかの私立大学について、理事会・評議員会等の大学ガバナンス機関のメンバーの属性の分析にとりかかった。
大学沿革史や各種史料集が整備されており、比較的情報を得やすい早稻田大学と慶應義塾大学についてまず着手していた。具体的には、戦前期のいくつかの時点について、理事会のメンバーリストの作成とともに、理事メンバーの属性について、人事興信録等の人名辞典や大学沿革史・史料集などから、情報を得て、データをまとめている。現時点ではまだ一時点の情報整備にとどまっており、今後は他の時点についても作業をおこない、時期による変化等の分析を行う予定である。
予想されたことではあるが、早稻田・慶應義塾の理事会メンバーについては、ほとんどのメンバーの情報が人事興信録に掲載されているなど、相当に社会的地位の高いメンバーによって占められていた実態が確認された。さらに、わずかな例外を除き、大半の理事は各大学の卒業生であった。また、そのことから予想されるように、両大学の理事メンバーの重なりはみられなかった。
加えて、早稻田・慶應以外の私立大学についても作業を開始している。さしあたりは、早慶につぐ、位置づけにあったとされている、明治大学、法政大学、中央大学、専修大学、立教大学などの各大学について、資料を収集しつつ、一部の分析も開始している。これらの大学については概して沿革史の情報は断片的でありことが多く、各校を訪問して、資料を収集することがほぼ必須と思われる。手始めとして、すでに専修大学大学史資料室と中央大学図書館を訪問し、大正期から昭和初年にかけての理事会・評議員会メンバーについての資料を入手しており、現在その分析にとりかかっている。
「研究実績の内容」でも述べているように、各私立大学のガバナンス機関のメンバーについての資料収集は順調にすすんでおり、分析にも一部とりかかっている。いまだ早稻田大学と慶應義塾大学についてのみではあるが、分析の結果が部分的に得られるようになっている。しかしそれ以外の大学については、資料収集と分析にはしばらく時間が必要である。分析結果の成果を論文や学会発表等で公表するまでには、いくつかの大学の資料収集と分析をまつ必要があると考える。
今後は，早稻田・慶應義塾以外の私立大学での資料調査を中心的にすすめていく必要がある。それらの大学については、ガバナンス関連の資料の多くは、公刊されておらず、各大学への訪問調査が必要となる場合が多いとおもわれる。他方で、すでに得られた資料の分析の作業も同時並行して実施していく予定である。

This research project examined private university management in Japan in the 1950s from three perspectives: individual data on each private university, the policy environment surrounding private universities, and students' behavior toward higher education. Specifically, we collected historical and quantitative data on private universities, as well as data from private university associations and the government's private university policy. In addition, we also analyzed corporate data in order to obtain an overall picture of private university management. At this point, it is clear that there is considerable diversity in management behavior among these private universities. On the other hand, the journals of private university associations provide useful information on the relationship between the government and private universities at the time, as well as on trends related to the private universities themselves.

First, our field survey provided insights into the positive or limited roles the US states played for the foundation of public research universities. In particular, the states played a role in maintaining a framework for the size and scope of these research universities, while the financial support was seen as a function where the federal government played a major role. Second, by examining the macrostructure and factors of functional differentiation in California, using data such as IPEDS, the actual states of functional differentiation regarding the scale, scope, education-research environment, and economic basis of higher education institutions were revealed. Third, by analyzing the historical development of research universities, the context-dependence of functional differentiation among the public higher education sectors in several states was clarified. Fourth, we examined the advanced statistical analysis needed to carry out this study and explored its applicability.
