Perception of Luxury and Product Quality in Package Design: Examining the Effects of White Space, Typeface, and Visual Texture Reviewed International journal

As consumers gravitate toward luxury brands, marketers face the challenge of conveying perceptions of luxury through package design. This study focused on packaging that only displays the brand logo. Using chocolate, we investigated the impact of packaging design elements on consumers' perceptions of luxury and product quality. We employed a 2 (white space: large, small) × 2 (typeface: luxurious, casual) × 2 (visual texture: luxurious, casual) between- participants design, exposing 1193 participants to one of eight package designs. Large white spaces and luxurious typefaces enhanced perceived luxury and product quality, respectively. Luxurious visual texture enhanced luxury perception and product quality evaluation when paired with casual typefaces, but not with luxurious typefaces. Thus, the boundary conditions for the effect of visual texture may depend on the typeface. Our findings contribute to the literature on luxury perception and package design and provide practical implications for brands that want to enhance the appeal of their brands/products.

The present study examines whether the activation of visuospatial perceptual processing affects empathic responses during narrative comprehension. Specifically, using a dual-task method, we investigated the effects of load on a visuospatial memory task and capacity of visuospatial working memory on empathic response rating scores for reading. Consequently, the results revealed that the effects of load on the visuospatial memory task reduced empathic response scores for reading in the higher visuospatial working memory capacity. The results suggest that the activation of visuospatial perceptual processing influence empathic responses during narrative comprehension. Moreover, elaboration through activation of visuospatial perceptual processing plays an important role in empathic responses, particularly for readers having a large capacity of visuospatial working memory.

The 20-item prosopagnosia index (PI20) was developed for assessing congenital prosopagnosia, which is characterized by severe facial recognition deficits in the absence of any obvious neurological deficit. We aimed to develop a Japanese version of the PI20 (PI20-J) scale and evaluate its validity and reliability. In study 1, we confirmed the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity of the scale. In study 2, we examined the relationships between PI20-J score and facial recognition performance and found a moderate correlation between them. In study 3, we examined whether the PI20-J score is related specifically with facial recognition performance, or with general object recognition performance. We found that participants with a high PI20-J score showed weaker facial recognition performance than those with a low PI20-J score. In contrast, the object recognition performance did not depend on the score. Our results suggest that the PI20-J score is related specifically with facial recognition performance. We conclude that PI20-J is highly reliable and valid as a self-reported measure for congenital prosopagnosic traits.

Everyday Context Attenuates the Attentional Capture by Modern Threatening Stimuli Reviewed

Threatening stimuli such as snakes typically draw attention. This attentional bias, called the threat-superiority effect, is proposed as the response of a fear module that human beings evolved to detect specific threatening stimuli. Alternatively, the relevance-detection hypothesis proposes that the threat-superiority effect by modern threats (i.e., weapons) is induced when the threatening stimulus is the most relevant for circumventing danger in the context. Although previous studies have shown that an urban context enhanced the modern threat-superiority effect, these do not clarify whether the context induced the attentional bias or facilitated the response via the fear module. Therefore, the present study investigated whether weapons captured attention in a daily context where the weapons were typically used as tools. The results indicated that weapons in the usual context did not capture attention. It is supported that the modern threat-superiority effect depends on the context, as suggested by the relevance-detection hypothesis.

Effect of individual differences in desire for control on willingness to pay for a customizable product Reviewed

People are innately motivated to exert control over their environment and to feel competent through gaining a sense of control. However, there are individual differences behind this motivation (desire for control). The present study investigated whether individual differences in desire for control could influence their willingness to pay for a customizable product as a result of increased perceived control over it. The results showed that individuals with a high desire for control were willing to pay more for a customizable product as compared to those with a lower desire for control. Furthermore, this effect was caused by increased perceived control over it. From the marketing perspective, the present findings suggest that it may be an effective strategy to target customizable products towards consumers with a high desire for control.
