Electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) allows the quantitative, element-selective determination of spin and orbital magnetic moments, similar to its well-established X-ray counterpart, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). As an advantage over XMCD, EMCD measurements are made using transmission electron microscopes, which are routinely operated at sub-nanometre resolution, thereby potentially allowing nanometre magnetic characterization. However, because of the low intensity of the EMCD signal, it has not yet
been possible to obtain quantitative information from EMCD signals at the nanoscale. Here we demonstrate a new approach to EMCD measurements that considerably enhances the outreach of the technique. The statistical analysis introduced here yields robust quantitative EMCD signals. Moreover, we demonstrate that quantitative magnetic information can be
routinely obtained using electron beams of only a few nanometres in diameter without imposing any restriction regarding the crystalline order of the specimen.

    S. Arai, S. Muto, T. Sasaki, K. Tatsumi, Y. Ukyo, K. Kuroda and H. Saka

Solid State Communications   Vol. 135   page: 664-667   2005

     More details

Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

In the present study, we show, by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements under electron channeling conditions, the existence of a novel valence state for the cerium atoms in Ce2Zr2O7.5, where the valence state is split into two states, with the ions exhibiting a trivalent character (Ce3+) when facing oxygen planes with oxygen vacancies, and a tetravalent character (Ce4+) when facing oxygen planes with no oxygen vacancies. This result should prompt reconsideration of the conventional concept of the valence fluctuation in rare earth compounds.

    K. Tatsumi, S. Muto, I. Nishida and J. Rusz

Applied Physics Letters   Vol. 96   page: 201911 (3 pages)   2010.4

Authorship:Lead author   Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

Site-specific configurations of Fe 3d electrons in a spinel ferrite were investigated by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) under electron channeling conditions. Site-specific spectra were extracted by applying a multivariate curve resolution (MCR) technique to the data set. An electronic difference in the Fe sites caused by ligand field splitting of trivalent Fe was probed. This demonstrated the promise of site-specific valence and spin state analysis in spintronics applications of spinel ferrites.

  7. *Spectral restoration and energy resolution improvement of electron energy-loss spectra by Pixon reconstruction: I. Principle and test examples Reviewed

     More details

Authorship:Lead author   Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

We applied Pixon deconvolution as introduced in Part I to several practical, examples of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), electron energy-loss spectra with a goal toward restoring their fine spectral features and/or improving the energy resolution. We demonstrate that by directly fitting the two-dimensional spectral data recorded on the CCD; the method enables us to reveal fine spectral structures. Consequently, Pixon reconstruction extends the ability to probe electronic states in very spatially localized areas, a capability currently unique to our method.

It is difficult to analyze the local concentrations and chemical states of lithium in lithium-ion secondary battery electrodes by microanalysis techniques based on TEM because the core excitation spectra of transition metals invariably overlap with the absorption/emission spectra of Li-K. We propose a promising analysis method that enables the spatial distribution of lithium with different chemical states from the original phase in a LiNiO2-based positive electrode to be visualized. It employs a suite of spectrum imaging techniques including scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and multivariate curve resolution. This method is successfully applied to a cross-sectioned positive electrode.

In the present study, we examined the effects of hydrogen on electron energy-loss and x-ray absorption spectra of the iron carbides. The experimentally obtained spectral changes were interpreted on the basis of first principles
calculations for a model structure of the Fe–C–H system. Finally, we demonstrate high spatial resolution imaging of hydrogen distributions in iron-carbon systems by an energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy technique, utilizing the present spectral changes associated with
    hydrogen incorporation.

We investigated the local atomic and electronic structures around the dopants Mg and Al in a LiNiO2-based cathode material by the combination analysis of their K shell electron energy loss near edge structures (ELNES) and x-ray absorption near edge structures (XANES), and first-principles calculations. The occupation sites of the dopants in initial and cycled samples were examined. On the basis of the atomic structures and chemical bonding states of the models whose theoretical spectra were most consistent with the experimental spectra, we discussed the effects of Al and Mg on Li diffusion and their roles in suppressing the degradation of battery properties.

The hydroxyapatite (HAp) formation ability and related surface potentials of rutile-type TiO2 scales formed on Ti are controlled by varying the Ti heat treatment conditions in a N2 atmosphere containing a trace amount of O2. The zeta potentials of the samples heated at 873 and 973 K for 1 h are large negative and positive values, respectively, where HAp formation on the surface is enhanced in both cases. Upon longer heat treatment at those temperatures, the HAp forming ability diminishes and the zeta potential becomes more neutral. Kelvin probe force microscopy indicates that, under dry conditions, the surface charges on the TiO2 scales formed at 873 and 973 K in 1 h are positive and negative, respectively, opposite to the signs of the zeta potentials measured under wet conditions. Scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and calculations of defect formation energies reveal that nitrogen atoms incorporated into TiO2 during scale formation produce the charged defects (NO)O −1 and (N2)O +2 for the scales formed in 1 h at 873 and 973 K, respectively. In the case of longer treatments, nitrogen-related defects presumably transform into more stable states, such as N2 gas, in voids, resulting in a neutral surface. The present findings lead to physical models of surface charge distributions that elucidate the relationship between nitrogen-related defects, charged surfaces, and HAp formation mechanisms.

Initial porous silicon (por-Si), carbonized porous silicon (por-Si:C), and carbon-incorporated porous silicon oxide (por-SiO2:C) layers are studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) at T = 10–13 K. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss (EEL) spectroscopy show that por-Si:C and por-SiO2:C layers have a highly disordered structure with mixing sp2 and sp3 CC bonds. In the por-SiO2:C layers, the peak of the oxygen bonded to carbon in the form of hydroxyl groups is found in the EEL spectrum of the C K-edge region. Low-intensity signals of Lorentzian lineshape are detected in the EPR spectrum of por-Si, por-Si:C, por-SiO2:C layers. One of them is attributed to the Pb0 defect at the Si/SiO2 interface of nanocrystalline grain and the second to the silicon dangling bonds (SiDB) localized in nanocrystalline Si. The carbonization of por-Si layers and subsequent oxidation of por-Si:C gives rise to the appearance of additional EPR signals of high intensity at g = 2.0035(3) in por-Si:C and at g = 2.0030(3) in por-SiO2:C, which are assigned to carbon-related defects (CRD) and carbon clusters, correspondingly. It was found that predominant defect types in por-Si:C and por-SiO2:C layers are CRD and carbon clusters, respectively, while the spin concentration of Pb0 interface defects and SiDB is low.

The strength against fracture initiation from an interface free-edge of bonded copper (Cu) and silicon nitride (SiN) micro-components is studied. Quantitative fracture tests are conducted either in a vacuum environment or in a gaseous hydrogen (H2) environment. By using two kinds of specimens, Types I and II, having the same free-edge geometry (135∘/135∘) but different outer shape, the validity of the linear fracture mechanics criterion is critically evaluated. For specimens tested in vacuum, fracture initiation strength represented by the elastic stress intensity factor of the near-edge normal stress component is found to be the same irrespective of the specimen type, indicating that the fracture mechanics criterion holds. For specimens tested in H2 gas, the strength of both types is reduced and, interestingly, Type II strength shows greater reduction than Type I. In other words, the fracture mechanics criterion does not hold in H2 gas. Such a difference may be attributable to the difference of local plasticity in each specimen type.

This paper demonstrates how Signal Subspace Sampling (SSS) is an effective pre-processing step for Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) or Vertex Component Analysis (VCA). The approach allows to uniquely extract non-negative source signals which are orthogonal in at least one observation channel, respectively. It is thus well suited for processing hyperspectral images from X-ray microscopy, or other emission spectroscopies, into its non-negative source components. The key idea is to resample the given data so as to satisfy better the necessity and sufficiency conditions for the subsequent NMF or VCA. Results obtained both on an artificial simulation study as well as based on experimental data from electronmicroscopy are reported. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Knowledge of the location and concentration of impurity atoms doped into a synthesized material is of great interest to investigate the effect of doping. This would usually be investigated using X-ray or neutron diffraction methods in combination with Rietveld analysis. However, this technique requires a large-scale facility such as a synchrotron radiation source and nuclear reactor, and can sometimes fail to produce the desired results, depending on the constituent elements and the crystallographic conditions that are being analysed. Thus, it would be preferable to use an element-selective spectroscopy technique that is applicable to any combination of elements. We have established a quantitative method to deduce the occupation sites and their occupancies, as well as the site-dependent chemical states of the doped elements, using a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The method is based on electron channelling phenomena where the symmetries of the Bloch waves excited in a crystal are dependent on the diffraction condition or incident beam direction with respect to the crystal axes. By rocking the incident electron beam with a fixed pivot point on the sample surface, a set of EDX/EELS spectra are obtained as a function of the beam direction. This is followed by a statistical treatment to extract the atom-site-dependent spectra, thereby quantitatively enabling the estimation of the site occupancies and chemical states of the dopants. This is an extension of the 'ALCHEMI' (Atom Location by Channelling Enhanced Microanalysis) method or 'HARECXS/HARECES' (High Angular Resolution Channelled X-ray/Electron Spectroscopy), and we further extended the method to be applicable to cases where the crystal of interest contains multiple inequivalent atomic sites for a particular element, applying the precise spectral predictions based on electron elastic/inelastic dynamical scattering theory. After introduction of conceptual aspects of the method, we describe the extension of the method together with the development of the theoretical calculation method. We then demonstrate several useful applications of the method, including luminescent, ferrite, and battery materials. We discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the present method, compared with those of the recently developed atomic column-by-column analysis using aberration-corrected scanning TEM and high-efficiency X-ray detectors. Inelastic electron scattering is a consequence of mostly Coulomb interaction between electrons in the sample and electron beam and, as such, it is a nonlocal event. In atomic resolution experiments, it thus opens the following question: How far is the origin of the inelastic scattering signal that is observed when the electron beam is passing nearby an atomic column or plane? We analyze computationally the delocalization of the magnetic signal in electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) experiments in the so-called three-beam orientation, allowing one to image individual atomic planes. We compare the classical EMCD setup using the double-difference procedure (DD-EMCD) to a recently introduced atomic plane resolution EMCD (APR-EMCD) geometry, assuming the same probe size. We observe a strong localization of the EMCD signal to the closest atomic plane, confirming the potential of EMCD to study an evolution of magnetic properties near surfaces or interfaces with atomic plane resolution. The localization of the EMCD signal is remarkably higher than the localization of the nonmagnetic component of the inelastic scattering cross section. We also analyze double-channeling effects and find them particularly strong for the DD-EMCD method, while for APR-EMCD they appear to be minor. The DD-EMCD signal, on the other hand, appears to be more robust with respect to sample thickness than that of the APR-EMCD.

While the performance of magnetic tunnel junctions based on metal/oxide interfaces is determined by hybridization, charge transfer, and magnetic properties at the interface, there are currently only limited experimental techniques with sufficient spatial resolution to directly observe these effects simultaneously in real-space. In this letter, we demonstrate an experimental method based on Electron Magnetic Circular Dichroism (EMCD) that will allow researchers to simultaneously map magnetic transitions and valency in real-space over interfacial cross-sections with sub-nanometer spatial resolution. We apply this method to an Fe/MgO bilayer system, observing a significant enhancement in the orbital to spin moment ratio that is strongly localized to the interfacial region. Through the use of first-principles calculations, multivariate statistical analysis, and Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (EELS), we explore the extent to which this enhancement can be attributed to emergent magnetism due to structural confinement at the interface. We conclude that this method has the potential to directly visualize spin and orbital moments at buried interfaces in magnetic systems with unprecedented spatial resolution.

Carbon nitride (CN) coatings have been found to exhibit an ultra-low friction coefficient (less than 0.01) after repeated sliding against a silicon nitride (Si3N4) ball in a dry nitrogen gas (N-2) atmosphere. However, the mechanism for this has not yet been fully elucidated with respect to analyzing changes in the space structure of CNN. In the present study, we examined the microscopic structural changes in the near-surface structural transition layers of the wear track in the CN, coating and the transfer layer of the Si3N4 ball, using scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. We investigated the nitrogen concentration, density, and curvature of fragmented graphitic planes in the structural transition layers of both the CN,, coating and the transfer layer of the Si3N4 ball by analyzing the plasmon peak and carbon K-edge. In addition, we theoretically examined the chemical bonding states of nitrogen doping in various model clusters using an ab initio molecular orbital method to clarify the role of nitrogen in the ultra -low friction behavior. The mechanism behind the ultra low friction behavior is explained by nano-graphitization of the fragmented carbon structure with optimal nitrogen concentration passivating the contacting counter surfaces of the coating and ball formed during sliding. Advancements in the field of renewable energy resources have led to a growing demand for the analysis of light elements at the nanometer scale. Detection of lithium is one of the key issues to be resolved for providing guiding principles for the synthesis of cathode active materials, and degradation analysis after repeated use of those materials. We have reviewed the different techniques currently used for the characterization of light elements such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy ( STEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). In the present study, we have introduced a methodology to detect lithium in solid materials, particularly for cathode active materials used in lithium-ion battery. The chemical states of lithium were isolated and analyzed from the overlapping multiple spectral profiles, using a suite of STEM, EELS and hyperspectral image analysis. The method was successfully applied in the chemical state analyses of hetero-phases near the surface and grain boundary regions of the active material particles formed by chemical reactions between the electrolyte and the active materials.

NASICON-type oxide Li1+xAlxTi2-x(PO4)(3)(LATP) is expected to be a promising solid electrolyte (SE) for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) owing to its high ion conductivity and chemical stability. However, its interface properties with electrodes on the atomic scale remain unclear, but it is crucial for rational control of the ASSBs performance. Herein, we focused on the LATP SE with x = 0.17 and investigated the electron and ion transfer behaviors at the interfaces with the Li metal negative electrode and the LiCoO2 (LCO) positive electrode via explicit interface models and density functional theory calculations. Ti reduction was found at the LATP/Li interface. For the LATP/LCO interface, the results indicated the Li-ion transfer from LCO to LATP upon contact until a certain electric double layer is formed under equilibrium, in which LCO is partially reduced. Co-Ti exchange was also found to be favorable where the Li ion moves with Co3+ to LATP. We also explored the possible interfacial processes during annealing by simulating the oxygen removal effect and found that oxygen vacancy can be more easily formed in the LCO at the interface. It implies that partial Li ions move back to LCO for the local charge neutrality. We also demonstrated higher Li chemical potential around the LATP/LCO interfaces, leading to the dynamical Li-ion depletion upon charging. The calculation results and the deduced mechanisms well explain the experimental results so far and provide insights into the interfacial electron and ion transfer upon contact, during annealing, and charging.

Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is one of the most promising candidates as a photoanode materials for solar water splitting. Owing to the difficulty in suppressing the significant charge recombination, however, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) conversion efficiency of hematite is still far below the theoretical limit. Here we report thick hematite films (∼1500 nm) constructed by highly ordered and intimately attached hematite mesocrystals (MCs) for highly efficient PEC water oxidation. Due to the formation of abundant interfacial oxygen vacancies yielding a high carrier density of ∼1020 cm-3 and the resulting extremely large proportion of depletion regions with short depletion widths (<10 nm) in hierarchical structures, charge separation and collection efficiencies could be markedly improved. Moreover, it was found that long-lived charges are generated via excitation by shorter wavelength light (below ∼500 nm), thus enabling long-range hole transfer through the MC network to drive high efficiency of light-to-energy conversion under back illumination.

We propose a magnetic measurement method utilizing a patterned postsample aperture in a transmission electron microscope. While utilizing electron magnetic circular dichroism, the method circumvents previous needs to shape the electron probe to an electron vortex beam or astigmatic beam. The method can be implemented in standard scanning transmission electron microscopes by replacing the spectrometer entrance aperture with a specially shaped aperture, hereafter called a ventilator aperture. The proposed setup is expected to work across the whole range of beam sizes-from wide parallel beams down to atomic resolution magnetic spectrum imaging.

We examined the evolution of electron-radiation-induced defects in a white-luminescent, carbonized, mesoporous silica nanocomposite using cathodoluminescence (CL) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy associated with scanning transmission electron microscopy, in order to elucidate the microscopic origins of light emissions in the visible spectral range. The effects of electron irradiation on CL were analyzed based on the differential equations for kinetics of irradiation defects. The nanometric honeycomb silica framework was found to play essentially no role in the electron-excited light emission processes, in contrast to the case for photon-excited processes. The broad and continuous visible emission band in CL consisted of several luminescence components, that have been assigned to optically active point defects such as oxygen-deficient centers, and surface non-bridging oxygen hole centers (NBOHCs) in silica glass.

In this study, we developed a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) method for imaging the antibacterial activity of organic polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) toward biofilms formed by Staphylococcus epidermidis bacterial cells, for optimizing NPs to treat biofilm infections. The combination of sample preparation method using a hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL) and STEM observation using the cooling holder eliminates the need for specialized equipment and techniques for biological sample preparation. The annular dark-field STEM results indicated that the two types of biodegradable poly-(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) NPs: PLGA modified with chitosan (CS), and clarithromycin (CAM)loaded+CS-modified PLGA, prepared by emulsion solvent diffusion exhibited different antibacterial activities in nanoscale. To confirm damage to the sample during STEM obser-vation, we observed the PLGA NPs and the biofilm treated with PLGA NPs by both the conventional method and the newly developed method. The optimized method allows microstructure of the biofilm treated with PLGA NPs to be maintained for 25 min at a current flow of 40 pA. The developed simple sample preparation method would be helpful to understand the interaction of drugs with target materials. In addition, this technique could contribute to the visualization of other deformable composite materials at the nanoscale level. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We propose a new analysis method of the extended energy-loss fine structure (EXELFS), applying the multi-resolution analysis (MRA) in the wavelet transformation. We select the cardinal spline wavelet where the rank-4 cardinal spline function is used as a scaling function to construct the mother wavelet. In contrast with the conventional analysis method, the present method is efficient in filtering out the high-frequency noise and low-frequency components introduced by the numerical analysis process without distorting the original signal components, which promises quantitative analyses with less uncertainties.

The aim of the present study is to develop a new operando measurement system and thereby clarify the chemical reaction mechanisms by concurrent real-time atomic-level structural observation and detection of supply and product gases associated with the reactions.
A quadrupole mass spectrometer with gas chromatography attached was implemented to the Reaction Science High-Voltage TEM system equipped with a gas-environmental cell. For the application example, Rh fine metallic particles supported by ZrO2 were used as a model catalyst for purifying nitrogen oxides. The developed system was confirmed to actually detect the consumption of the supply gas and the product gas emission at the same time when the structural changes of particle surfaces were observed in atomic resolution with increasing temperature.

This study aims to develop a robust scheme to identify the crystallographic sites where functional dopants segregated in general randomly-oriented grain boundaries occupy and their associated chemical states there by combining the dopant analysis using electron beam rocking and advanced spectral imaging techniques.
we developed a beam controlling software to correct the aberrations of electromagnetic lens of TEM, which enables the incident electron beam to illuminate a sample with parallelly foucued on a area smaller than 100 nm in diameter.
The present method applied to a Y-doped SrTiO3 grain boundary, and we successfully obtained the X-ray channeling signal from Y, suggesting that Y occupies particular atomic columns and also associated oxygen vacancies are introduced to compensate for the charge imbalance at the position next to the doped Y. The present results are summarized as a review report in the annual bulletin of Japan Institute of Metals.

The purpose of this study is development of element-selective spin state analysis with crystalline size required as small as 10 nm. We expect the developed method will be applied to nano-level imaging of spin states in spintronics materials. We consider the acquisition method of electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) and electron magnetic linear dichroism (EMLD). On electron magnetic linear dichroism (EMLD), a significant spectral difference is obtained from a spinel-type oxide with largely spin-polarized. Electron magnetic circular dichroism with a specially designed EELS aperture is not realized, due to instability of the experimental apparatus. Through statistical analysis on measured Fe L2,3 EELS data, we confirm atomic plane resolution EMCD, which was theoretically proposed before the measurement.

In this study we developed state-of-the-art methods that enable physical properties analysis and thier chemical imaging of functional materials at nanometer scale by combining multiple electron spectroscopic methods associated with scanning transmission electron microscopy. The method involves information/statistical methods to process the obtained big size datasets. The methods applied to analyses of environmental, energy, magnetic and biological materials, thereby clarifying the site occupancies and chemical states of dopant elements in manners that the conventional diffraction and microscopic methods have never accessed.

In the present study we aimed to develop novel methods that enable us to analyze and visualize the localized chemical states, thereby applying them to real materials analysis, using transmission electron microscopy and associated spectroscopic methods.
In particular, we have established the scheme where a large size of datasets are collected as a function of spatial coordinates or diffraction condition by scanning/rocking a fine-focused electron beam on a sample, followed by applying machine learning techniques to the so-called 'big data' obtained to allows us to extract the embedded chemical states.
