    This paper reports an empirical investigation on the expansion process of choice set integrating the information search approach and the cost-benefit approach. We hypothesized that the arising of interests in new alternative needs both initiative information search and considerable expected benefit. The latent mixture distribution structure equation models are developed and verified by a data set containing shopping behavior and attitudes. The results supported our hypothesis, suggesting that a lower satisfaction with the current set will incite external information search for all subjects, and that a higher expected benefit of expanding the choice set could induce a higher interest in new alternatives only when the considerable external information search was activated.

    Maximal potential market for neighborhood car sharing is investigated considering optimization of car use within household. The maximal potential is not predicted from revealed or stated preference, but simulated based on the explicit rules that assign qualified travel demand by car to car sharing. Results of empirical analysis for Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture suggest that household fleet can be reduced by about 35% on weekdays and about 55% on weekends. Scale of the car sharing system is calculated that one vehicle per 10 households serves three trips a day. The results also suggest that potential demand is higher for households with light motor vehicles and areas close to train station.

The household attitudes and behaviors on vehicle ownership are modeled using bivariate ordered probit (BOP) models.     This study is concerned with how routine an individual's routine really can be. This question is addressed by examining the day-to-day variability of the time coordinate of the vertex of a time-space prism; in other words, by examining how the timeframe which governs the individual's daily schedule varies from day to day. When the timeframe varies, it is likely that the individual's behavior also varies. When the timeframe is stable, on the other hand, a routine can be maintained. The analysis presented in this paper attempts to determine how much of the variation in travel is due to the variation in the timeframe. The origin vertices of workers' morning prisms, which determine how early they can leave home in the morning, are examined in this study, along with the departure times of the first trips in the prisms, which are mostly supposedly routine commute trips. The results indicate that the vertices are located with a much smaller variance, but vary more systematically than do the departure times of the first trips in the prisms. This implies that a large degree of variability is introduced when a trip is made within the timeframe as determined by a prism vertex. It is also shown that the departure time varies from worker to worker according to unobserved heterogeneity—i.e., unexplained differences across individuals—much more than does the prism vertex. The study results indicate that large degrees of flexibility are associated with trip making, and suggest the presence of room for behavioral modification with respect to workers' first trips in the morning.

    Probe vehicles are promising tools for collecting travel time data because of their ability to provide large amounts of real-time information. However, there are many obstacles to the practical deployment of probe vehicles, one of which is the enormous expense of data transmission. This study attempts to assess the effects of differing transmission intervals (and therefore costs) on the quality of travel time data collected. Two accuracy/error values are examined: map-matching accuracy and the mean absolute percent error (MAPE) of link travel information. In order to determine the most cost-effective probe transmission frequency, the accuracy elasticity of cost is compared for six different ratios of data transmission charge to total communication cost.

    One serious problem of continuous large-scale data collection with probe vehicle is the dilemma of balancing the cost economization and system reliability improvements. The polling frequency is found to be the major factor that determines the operation cost of a probe vehicle-based traffic data collection system. This paper focuses on evaluating the cost-effectiveness of probe data at various space-based intervals, which are expected to provide roadway travel time estimation at certain reliability.     A dynamic route guidance system 'PRONAVI' is introduced. PRONAVI is one of the in-vehicle navigation systems, which comprises a central server and terminals connected over the Internet. When a destination is selected on a terminal, the central server calculates the time required to reach it from the point of departure and send the results to the terminal. The key feature of the system is the intensive use of various kinds of information including not only widely provided VICS but also probe vehicle information and weather forecast. The information is used for the real-time route guidance, and also, stored in the center server and used to forecast the future traffic condition combined with the real-time information later.

    This paper examines the cognitive structure of the impressions that users have of railway stations and quantifies the effect of different types of adjunct stores on the cognitive structure. The results offer some fundamental insights for developing more effective policies and promotion strategies.
    User feelings of Tokyo's large railway terminals were gathered by means of a questionnaire. Overall impressions of the stations were then extracted using factor analysis. A structural equation model (SEM) was applied to see how stores affect the user's impressions of the stations as well as to quantify the impact of the stores and the differences in the users' socio-economic characteristics.
    The results suggest that railway users have three types of impressions about stations: convenience, when a station is mainly considered a transport facility; pleasure, when a station is mainly considered a place of communication or leisure; and crowded, which concerns the station's layout and atmosphere. Different types of stores produced different impressions. Clothing stores enhanced the impression of pleasure, while food & beverage stores enhanced the impression of convenience. The revealed shopping behaviour data confirmed that these latent variables affect the railway user's choice of shopping destinations.

    The principle of driver's route choice has long been the shortest path with a fixed time penalty of a toll. It is also seen that traffic is assigned on the road network based on user equilibrium with perfect information assumption. This paper demonstrates two empirical studies that pose a question to these traditional assumptions to better understand route choice behavior. Multi-class user equilibrium assignment with imperfectly informed drivers' classes is applied to a metropolitan area network first. Next, route choice behavior is directly observed and analyzed using probe car data.

    The development of activity-based travel demand modeling systems ushers in a new era in transportation demand forecasting and planning. This paper describes a comprehensive multimodal activity-based travel demand forecasting system developed for implementation in the State of Florida. The effort has resulted in the development of FAMOS, the Florida Activity Mobility Simulator. FAMOS consists of two main modules that together comprise a microsimulation model system for modeling activity-travel patterns of individuals. They are the Household Attributes Generation System (HAGS) and the Prism-Constrained Activity Travel Simulator (PCATS). The model system has been developed and estimated using household activity and travel data collected in Southeast Florida in 2000. Results of the model development effort are very promising and demonstrate the applicability of activity-based model systems in travel demand forecasting practice. This paper provides an overview of the model system together with a description of its features and capabilities and preliminary validation results.

    With the development in IT, various techniques of travel time prediction have been developed recently. Probe-car system using running cars as sensors firstly attains travel information in detail, such as the velocity data and used route, on more extensive area. This research aims to develop a method to predict travel time which will be supplied to drivers during their trip based on this new data source. The algorithm developed in this study, which combines the travel time history with the real time speeds of monitor cars, are found to improve the accuracy of travel time prediction.

    Without redistribution of vehicles by operator, a multiple-station shared vehicle system may not meet all the demand, because the vehicles in the fleet may be distributed unevenly across the stations due to the directionality in demand, making it impossible to accommodate demands with certain combinations of origin and destination stations. A simulation model is developed to investigate the effects on system performance of many factors including the number of stations, the number of vehicles, the parking capacity, the size of the demand, and the one way trip rate. System performance is represented by a set of measures including the number of trip served by the system and the total time the vehicle is in use. The results suggest that the performance of a system with 100 stations and that of 10 systems with 10 stations each are the same if the other conditions are the same, and that increasing the number of the parking stalls is more effective than increasing the number of stations.

Some accessibility measures, based on expected maximum utility of mode choice models, are examined to explain the convenience and bivariate ordered probit models are applied to describe the ownership. Models estimated are inter-temporally compared, and their transferability is examined. Complementary relationships between car and motorcycle ownership, the secular changes of factors affecting the ownership, and accessibility measures related to higher transferability are shown.

    The methodology for weighting endogenous samples is extended in this study and applied to a multi-dimensional choice-based sample and an enriched sample. It is shown that a unified weight exists for a sample obtained from a complex endogenous sampling scheme. Problems with conventional weighting methods for samples from endogenous sampling, such as roadside surveys, are pointed out and an improved weighting scheme is proposed.     This study addresses the issue of how accurately parameters characterizing a stochastic, discrete behavioral process can be estimated using data from a discrete-time panel study. Specifically, the study examines the likelihood and magnitude of error in estimating the parameters characterizing the behavioral process based on observations of the process obtained at discrete time points. The results of the study offer strong indications that the likelihood and magnitude of error can be both very large. Furthermore, reducing the interval between survey waves improves estimation accuracy but only very slowly. The study results point to the need to obtain continuous data as accurately as possible from surveys made at discrete time points, using carefully designed and administered recall questions.

    The relationship between the travel speed at the main road and that detouring through neighborhood streets is examined by using the probe car information. The results suggest that the two travel speeds are positively correlated, implying that more drivers detour from the main road to the neighborhood street when the congestion at the former is severer. The results also show that the travel speed through the neighborhood streets has considerable variances regardless of the travel speed at the main road.

    The notion of time-space prisms has often been used in the context of describing activity-travel patterns of individuals. This paper presents a methodology for estimating the temporal vertices of time-space prisms using the stochastic frontier modeling technique. Observed trip starting and ending times are used as dependent variables and socio-economic characteristics and commute characteristics serve as independent variables. The models are found to offer plausible results indicating that temporal vertices of time-space prisms, though unobservable, can be estimated based on temporal characteristics of observed activity-travel patterns. Comparisons of stochastic frontier models of prism vertices and the distribution of prism vertices are presented using two activity data sets collected in the United States – San Francisco and Miami. Differences and similarities in temporal vertex locations are highlighted in the paper.

    Decision trees and production rules, which are among the methods used in knowledge discovery and data mining, are applied in this study to investigate drivers' route choice behavior. These methods have an advantage over artificial neural networks, another data mining method often used in the analysis of travel behavior, that they facilitate the determination of the relationships between the explanatory variables and the choice. Specifically, the C4.5 algorithm, which produces a decision tree and a set of production rules from the tree, is applied in this study. Two surveys were carried out to collect data on drivers' route choice behavior between two alternative routes on expressway networks. The two data sets include the expected minimum, maximum and average travel times along each alternative route as indicated by the respondent, as well as his socio-demographic attributes. The results of the analyses suggest that different expected travel times influence route choice in different cases, and that a maximum or average travel time determines route choice in some cases regardless of other attributes. The results of a comparison analysis between the C4.5 algorithm and discrete choice models indicate the superior ability offered by the former in representing drivers' route choice.

Members of the system can check out EVs at a station and return them at any station. To reduce the cost of system operation, EVs are not reallocated to stations by the operator. This feature, at the same time, may delimit the efficiency of the system because of the mismatch between the spatial distribution of the demand and the distribution of the EVs among the stations. We construct a simulation model of system operation, and configure the optimal management of the system using genetic algorithms, with the number of checkouts per vehicle set as the objective function to be maximized. The number of vehicles, parking capacity at each station and number of members are among the decision variables. The results suggest that the optimal number of EVs is about a half of the total number of parking stalls. This implies that the efficiency of the system does not necessarily improve as more EVs are introduced. Also, the results suggest that even if a new station is introduced into the system, the efficiency does not necessarily improve.

    Constrained by the single-equation specification, traditional logit or probit models for traffic accident severities can only model one severity at a time. Single-equation models fails to account for the simultaneity of injury severity outcomes in multivehicle collisions. An attempt to account for this simultaneity is made by presenting a simultaneous logit model of endogenous interrelationships among injury severities in multivehicle collisions. Car-truck collision data in Washington State between 1990 and 1996 are used for a simultaneous binary logit model to determine the effects of various exogenous factors in the presence of injury simultaneity, and empirical comparisons with traditional single-equation logit models are also provided. The methodology presented provides for significant efficiency gain when correlation between injury severities is high and can easily be extended to multiple severity categories in multi-vehicle collisions. Empirically, it is also found that parameter estimates for key roadway design variables may vary greatly between a simultaneous logit and its single-equation counterparts. Another finding from this methodology is that preventive measures for head-on collisions, or enforcement of drunk-driving regulations among truck drivers, as well as limiting the occurrence of high-speed curve designs on truck routes, appear to be the most likely factors for significant potential savings in social costs from car-truck collisions.

    The methodology for weighting endogenous samples is extended in this study and applied to a multi-dimensional choice-based sample and an enriched sample. It is shown that a unified weight exists for a sample obtained from a complex endogenous sampling scheme. Problems with conventional weighting methods for samples from endogenous sampling, such as roadside surveys, are pointed out and an improved weighting scheme is proposed. Coefficient estimates of discrete choice models with and without weights are compared, and the importance of applying appropriate weights and a valid covariance estimator is pointed out.

    French government has implemented a periodical vehicle inspection program, which aims at maintaining proper functioning of the vehicle and ensuring the emissions control systems installed on the vehicle work properly. Also, an incentive program for scrapping old vehicles was introduced in 1994 through 1996 to promote the replacement of those vehicles with higher emissions by newer vehicles with lower emissions. A hazard-based duration model of household vehicle transaction behavior has been developed in this study to examine the effects of the inspection program and the grant for scrappage on vehicle transaction timing. The model is developed as a competing risks model assuming the following three types of competing risks: replacing one of the vehicles in the household fleet, disposing of one vehicle in the fleet, and acquiring one vehicle to add to the fleet. The empirical analysis is carried out using the panel data of French households' vehicle ownership from 1984 to 1998, obtained by the panel survey called Parc-Auto, which has been conducted by a French marketing firm, SOFRES, since 1976. The long panel observation period facilitates the introduction of macro-economic indicators into the model, enabling the analysis to distinguish the effects of policy measures from macro-economic factors. The empirical results indicate that the expected vehicle holding duration becomes 1.23 times longer under the inspection program than before the program commenced, given that the vehicle is replaced by another vehicle at the end of the holding duration; and that the conditional probability of replacing a vehicle aged 10 years and over becomes 1.19 times higher when the grant for scrappage is available.

    Previous studies have examined injury severity of vehicle accidents in relation with human factors, vehicle type, highway design, and environmental conditions. Several types of statistical models of injury severity have been developed based on driver's injury in some studies, and on most severely injured occupant's severity in others. A bivariate ordered-response probit model of driver's and most severely injured passenger's severity in collisions with fixed objects is developed in this study. Exact severity of passenger is not necessarily observed, especially when only most severe injury of the accident and driver's injury are recorded in the police reports. To accommodate passenger severities as well, we explicitly develop a partial observability model of passengers' injury severity in multi-occupant vehicle. The model has consistent coefficients for the driver's severity between single-occupant vehicle and multiple-occupant vehicle accidents, and provides more efficient coefficient estimates by taking into account the common unobserved factors between driver's severity and passenger's severity. The results of the empirical analysis using 4-year statewide accident data in Washington State reveal the effects of driver's characteristics, vehicle attributes, types of objects, and environmental conditions on both driver's and passengers' injury severities, and that their severities have different elasticities to some of the risk factors.

    A promising approach for expedient market penetration of electric vehicles is a multi-station electric vehicle sharing system. Such a system, however, contains several problems, e.g., vehicles may concentrate at particular stations, deterring efficient operation of the system. The parameters that define system operation must be set at their optimal values for efficient operation. Genetic algorithms are used in this study along with a simulation model of the vehicle sharing system to optimize system operation and to examine ways to attain efficiency in system operation. It is founded from the results that the total number of parking slots needs to be twice as many as the number of vehicles and that adding a new station does not necessarily improve the efficiency of system operation.

    A two-stage route recommendation system is developed. The system consists of the minimum cost path search stage and the route choice stage. Several routes are selected according to multiple additive cost functions in the former stage, and a recommendation route is chosen from among the selected routes according to another function capable of nonlinear manipulations in the latter stage.     Non-compensatory models of driver's choice on dynamic park and ride are developed and examined on the predictability in this study. One of the data mining tools, C4.5, is used to develop decision tree and production rules of driver's choice. The generated decision tree and production rules are compared with the semi-ordered lexicographic model developed in the preceding study. Compared are the similarity of the estimated decision making structures and the distribution of the segments not correctly represented by the models as well as goodness-of-fit and hit ratio. The comparison shows that the semi-ordered lexicographic model has a higher goodness-of-fit and hit ratio than models with data mining tools. The results also suggest that the models developed in this study represent different decision rules from, but have similar distributions of the segments not represented by the models with the semi-ordered lexicographic model. Empirically, the consistent results by models with data mining tools and the semi-ordered lexicographic model suggest that the parking congestion level in CBD has a significant effect on the choice behavior.

    A destination choice model is developed, using a coordinates-based methodology, to resolve the problems arising from zone systems on which most models developed so far are based. To evaluate destination choice probabilities and simulate choice simulation on a hypothetical uniform area is almost identical to the theoretical distribution, suggesting the validity of the MCMC method. From the result of a simulation run in Kyoto, it is confirmed that the MCMC method is a useful technique as a method of forecasting destination choice behavior with huge choice sets.

    Travel survey data from two major metropolitan areas of Japan, taken at three time points spanning a period of 20 years, are analyzed and changes in travel characteristics and the spatial distributions of jobs and residences are examined. The two areas, the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe (Kei-Han-Shin) metropolitan area and the Nagoya-Gifu (Chukyo) metropolitan area, developed along rail networks prior to the process of motorization began in the 1960's in Japan. Changes in travel characteristics in these two areas are examined using two sets of repeated cross-sectional data. The data cover the period from 1970 through 1990 in which these metropolitan areas experienced rapid growth and motorization. The analysis focuses on changes over time in mode use, commute trip length, daily travel time expenditure, and trip-chaining characteristics, and explores their associations with trip end location, residence and job locations, and other spatial factors. Changes in urban structure are inferred through the examination of the spatial distributions of job locations, residence locations, and activity locations. As a new indicator of urban structure, the spatial distribution of person-hours by activity type is proposed, and its effectiveness in portraying, along the time as well as spatial dimensions, the internal structure of an metropolitan area and the distribution of economic activities therein, is examined.

    It is often the case that a discrete choice model cannot be applied to forecasting because the choice set is unmanageably large and choice probabilities cannot be evaluated in a practical manner. For example, an activity-based analysis of travel behavior often involves an astronomical number of potential activity-travel patterns, resulting in an enormous choice set when one attempts to formulate the behavior as a discrete choice. A colossal choice set makes it practically impossible to define the full choice set and to evaluate the choice probability of each pattern for forecasting. This paper demonstrates an algorithm to simulate individuals' activity-travel choice by sampling activity-travel patterns from a colossal choice set according to their choice probabilities as determined by a discrete choice model, without enumerating the full choice set. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the algorithm in forecasting the effects on activity-travel patterns of transportation policy measures.

    A hazard-based duration model of household vehicle transactions behavior is developed in this study to examine the effects of Japanese periodic inspection program, and an empirical analysis is carried out using the data set obtained by a panel survey conducted in Kyoto City. The results of model estimation suggest a higher probability of replacing or disposing of a vehicle whose inspection is scheduled within the next 6 months. Results of a simulation-based scenario analysis indicate that a raise in the inspection cost accelerates the replacement of vehicles households own without affecting the number of vehicles they own, and that the extension of the inspection period decelerates the scrappage of vehicles and increases the number of vehicles households own.

    Simultaneous vehicle type and main driver choice models and models of vehicle miles traveled are developed for one and two vehicle households separately. The types of vehicles are categorized as eight alternatives, and unobserved correlations among them are examined by adopting mixed multinomial logit models. The empirical results suggest that the vehicles are possibly reallocated in two-vehicle households at the transactions, that there exist inclinations toward specific types of vehicles among two-vehicle households, and that they have the tendency to obtain the same type of vehicles. The results also suggest that the vehicle miles traveled by respective vehicles in two-vehicle households are negatively interacted and that the vehicle types do not affect the vehicle miles traveled in two-vehicle households while they do so in one-vehicle households.

    The problem of determining the interval between waves of panel surveys, the sample size, and the study duration is formulated in this study as an optimization problem in which the sum of the cost of estimation error and the cost of the survey is minimized. Numerical analyses using hypothetical parameter values indicate that the optimal sample size of a panel study can be much smaller, and the optimal inter-wave interval and the optimal study duration much shorter, than those values that have typically been used in previous panel studies.

    Driver behavior under congestion pricing is analyzed in this study to evaluate the effects of alternative congestion pricing schemes. The analysis, which is based on stated-preference survey results, focuses on time allocation, departure time choice and route choice when a congestion pricing scheme is implemented on toll roads. A unique feature of the model system of this study is that departure time choice and route choice are analyzed in conjunction with the activities before and after the trip. A time allocation model is developed in this study to describe departure time choice, and a route and departure time choice model is developed as a multinomial logit model with alternatives representing the choice between freeways and surface streets and, for departure time, choice from among before, during, or after the period when congestion pricing is in effect. The results of the empirical analysis suggest that departing during the congestion pricing period tends to have higher utilities, and that a worker and a non-worker have quite different utility functions. The comparative analysis of different congestion pricing schemes is carried out based on the estimated parameters, and the results suggest that the probability of choosing each alternative is stable even if the length of the congestion pricing period changes, but that a higher congestion price causes more drivers to change the departure time to before the congestion pricing period.

    Household vehicle holding durations are examined in this study using panel data. Panel data enable the observation of changes in household vehicle holdings in discrete time periods. If the data set contains retrospective recall data which offer information on the types and the occurrence time points of the transactions since the last survey, direct observation of the transaction process along a continuous time axis is possible. Furthermore, if the data contain information on intentions for future transactions and actual outcomes of the intentions in later waves, the relationship between intended transactions and actual transactions can be observed. In this study, we develop models of actual vehicle holding durations and models of intended vehicle holding durations for the same set of vehicles. Comparing these two sets of models, the effects on household vehicle holding durations of changes in the household's plans for vehicle holding and unexpected events can be inferred. To represent unaccounted associations between intended vehicle holding durations and actual vehicle holding durations, vehicle specific error components are introduced into the duration models. A non-parametric approach is adopted in model estimation using mass points, which requires no assumption on the distribution of the error components.

    A methodology to estimate the location and size of space-time prisms that govern individuals' activity and travel is presented in this study. Because the vertices of a prism are unobservable, stochastic frontier models are formulated to locate prism vertices along the time axis using observable trip starting or ending times as the dependent variable, and commute characteristics, personal and household attributes and area characteristics as explanatory variables. Models are estimated successfully with coherent behavioral indications. A mean difference of 1.46 hours is found between the observed trip ending time and the expected location of the terminal vertex for workers' evening prisms. The estimation results aid in enhancing our understanding of prism constraints by identifying the determinants of prism vertex locations.

    In a household with fewer vehicles than household members, the use of a household vehicle by one member decreases its availability for other members. A model of mode choices by household members is developed as a vehicle allocation model in this study while taking into account the exclusiveness in vehicle use. A two-level nested logit model is applied where the choice by the main driver of a household vehicle is placed at a higher level and the allocation of the vehicle to other members in a lower level. The scale parameter is structured to represent the heterogeneity across households. The results of empirical analysis suggest that some improvement of the model's goodness-of-fit is gained by considering the exclusiveness in vehicle use, and that the main drivers who are household heads or drive standard-size vehicles are less altruistic.

    Public intentions and preferences should be reflected in transportation planning, because it is the public that receive benefits from and incur costs of transportation policies. It is thus desired that planners have a grasp of public attitudes toward each of the policies they implement. In this study, we develop a discrete-choice model of individuals' importance ratings of transportation policy measures using socio-demographic attributes and the transportation levels of service as its explanatory variables. We also analyze the differences in individuals' importance ratings between the case they value policies from their own perspectives and the case where they do so considering the entire community. The results reveal differences in individuals' importance ratings between the two positions, and suggest that the individuals' attitudes vary by area of residence and according to their socio-demographic attributes.

    This study proposes a new urban-travel demand forecasting system based on a micro-simulation approach as an alternative method to four-step estimation methods. This system comprises; 1) PCATS which simulates an individual's daily activity-travel pattern, 2) DEBNetS which simulates vehicle trips on urban road network, 3) a household simulator which generates future household attributes, and 4) a system to evaluate inter-zonal travel times and costs by public transit based on public transport networks and time tables. The system was applied to replicate the travel demand in a 1990 travel survey data set. A comparison between the observed and the forecast indicated that the system is capable of producing reasonable forecasts.

    A generating system of future household's attributes is developed in this study. The system creates the weight for each sample case obtained from the disaggregate survey to match present multiple aggregate marginal distributions, and simulates the demographic changes in each sample household along the time dimension. The simulation results applied to Osaka City suggest that the distributions of the number of trips or vehicle-holdings differ from those obtained by a conventional weighting method, that the system predicts population and number of households for the year 1995 fairly well using the data from 1990, and that the distribution of the predicted 2020 populations by repeated simulations has a high kurtosis.

    Motorization is a self-reinforcing process which involves positive feedback. Using a simple model of bi-modal transportation system, it is shown that a transportation system may eventually be dominated by the automobile, or may equilibrates at a grossly inefficient point due to social dilemmas associated with automobile use. Furthermore, in areas with well developed public transit, road capacity addition can be detrimental not only to the public transit but also to the automotive transportation. TDM measures are conceived in this study as mechanisms to prevent the divergence of the motorization process away from a social optimum due to its positive feedback and social dilemmas. A simple model of bi-modal transportation system and a cellular automata model of individuals' TDM compliance behavior are combined in the study to see how TDM measures that rely on individuals' voluntary cooperation may be effective. Results of simulation analyses based on the model are presented.

    The behavior of time allocation to two types of discretionary activities is formulated as a doubly-censored Tobit model. The model is capable of incorporating cases where the entire amount of time available for discretionary activity is allocated to one type of activity and the other type of activity is not engaged at all. The model is applied to examine individuals' allocation of time to in-home and out-of-home discretionary activities on working days and non-working days, using a weekly time-use data set from the Netherlands. Workers' daily activity patterns vary significantly between working days and non-working days, while it can be expected that patterns of time allocation are correlated between working days and non-working days. A set of error components is introduced into the model to represent this correlation, adopting a mass point approach which requires no assumption about the distribution of the error components. The validity of the model is examined statistically.

    In this study, a simultaneous choice model system of monetary and time expenditures, location, and frequencies of discretionary activities is developed under the hypothesis that an individual attempts to maximize the total utility of engaging in activities, by adjusting the monetary and time expenditures, and frequencies of the activities. Mixing distribution models were combined with Tobit models to estimate the unknown parameters. The model components in the system were estimated sequentially. Estimation results using a data set from Kyoto city revealed the effects on the discretionary activities of the attributes of the individual, the travel circumstances as well as the attributes of the destination locations.

    A structural equations models system, whose endogenous variables are household transportation energy consumption, work trip travel mode, vehicle holdings, and commute distance, is developed using the results of 1990 Kei-Han-Shin (Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe) household travel survey. The energy consumption characteristics of the household are explored using the model system, and the effectiveness of alternative land-use policies in reducing transportation energy consumption is evaluated by applying the model system while treating the commute distance as an exogenous variable. The estimation results indicate that it is possible to reduce household energy consumption by promoting high density land use development and encouraging job-residence proximity. In the Kei-Han-Shin metropolitan area where high-density and mixed land use already prevails and auto use is relatively low, however, an attempt to reduce household transportation energy consumption appreciably would require policies that target households of higher propensity toward energy consumption which tend to reside in the outskirts of the metropolitan area and commute long distances.

Previous disaggregate models of household vehicle ownership behavior, however, have been developed mostly for countries with mature motorization and most often have included only economic factors as explanatory variables that determine the utility of a household vehicle. The model is developed assuming the following three types of competing risks: replacing one of the vehicles in the household fleet, disposing of one vehicle in the fleet, and acquiring one vehicle to add to the fleet. In addition to the attributes of household, changes in household attributes are expected to have strong effects on vehicle transactions behavior. To account for their effects, dummy variables indicating the occurrence of a change in selected household attributes are defined as time varying covariates and introduced into the model. In addition, vehicle transactions themselves change the needs and motivations for vehicles holding, affecting the timing and the type of the transaction that immediately follows. Dummy variables indicating the type of the preceding transaction are also introduced as time varying covariates into the model. The results of the empirical analysis using a data set collected in a panel survey empirically support the theoretical considerations underlying the model development, and indicate that the effects of changes in household attributes and that of a preceding transaction are well represented in the model.

    In this paper, a household vehicle transactions model is developed for a better understanding of households' vehicle holdings behaviour which substantially affects their travel behaviour. A competing risks hazard-based duration model is applied to households' transactions behaviour by assuming the three risks, replacement, acquisition, and disposal. In order to account for interactions among transactions and effects of changes in households' characteristics, time-varying covariates are introduced into the model. The empirical analysis reveals interactions among transactions and the effects on transactions behaviour of changes in households characteristics.

    Household vehicle holding durations are examined for a better understanding of household vehicle transaction behavior. It is assumed in this study that observed transactions include planned and unplanned transactions. The objective of the study is to determine the differences in the distribution of vehicle holding durations between planned and unplanned vehicle transactions. The relationship between actual vehicle holding durations and intended vehicle holding durations are determined by comparing the revealed preference models and intention models. Based on these two sets of models, differences in distributional characteristics in vehicle holding durations are statistically inferred between planned and unplanned vehicle transactions.

    A discretecontinuous choice model of time allocation to two types of discretionary activities is formulated based on the concept of random utility maximization. The model development takes into account the discreteness inherent in daily activity engagement and time allocation (i.e., one type of activity may not be engaged, therefore no time may be allocated to it at all, during a day). Without requiring simplifying assumptions other than the one that at least one of the two types of activities will be engaged, the utility model is formulated as a doublycensored Tobit model.
    This theoretical framework is applied to study daily time allocation to inhome and outofhome discretionary activities while using, as explanatory variables, work schedules and commute characteristics as well as residential, household and personal attributes. A weekly timeuse data set from the Netherlands is used in the statistical analysis. To account for heterogeneity in the data set comprising repeated measurements of daily time use for each respondent, an error component is introduced into the doublycensored Tobit models. A non-parametric approach is adopted for model estimation using mass points. Behavioral implications of model estimation results are discussed. The validity of a procedure to correct estimated t-statistics proposed for repeated measurement data is also discussed.

    Misspecification of the decision maker's choice set causes inconsistent estimation of discrete choice model. This study presents a methodology to account for the heterogeneity in travel mode choice sets that results from vehicle availability. Assuming vehicle availability is affected by intra-household interactions and varies from time to time, this study develops a linear structural equations system of vehicle availability while taking intra-household interactions into account.

    プローブカーによる交通状況観測技術の発展や,電気自動車等の普及による揮発油税の減少,車車間,路車間通信による交通安全技術の発達等を考えた時,全ての車両の走行データを相互利用し,交通情報提供や距離帯別課税,交通事故の危険の発見などを格段に促進することが予想される.一方で個人情報保護の意識の高まりにより,個々の自動車利用状況を共有することに対する拒否感は大きい.本研究では,①どの程度までの情報なら共有してもよいか,②受けられるメリットによって受容性がどのように変化するか,③自動車利用状況を共有するという事実が自動車に対するイメージにどのような影響を及ぼすか,の3点について明らかにすることによって,自動車利用状況に関する個人情報の社会的共有の可能性を探る.

    ICTを活用したヴァーチャル活動が増加する中、本研究では、移動の価値を再考することを目的とし、以下の研究を実施する。移動の肉体的・精神的タスクが健康に与える影響の定量化、移動を伴わないヴァーチャル参加と、移動を伴うリアル参加でのコミュニケーションの効率性や活動の満足度などの計測、さらに、ICTの活用と移動量との関係性などを調査・分析する。これらの研究成果により、まちづくり、地域コミュニティ維持、交通インフラ整備、交通手段開発などの方向性や必要性を科学的に示すことが可能となる。
    本研究の目的は、人が実空間を「移動」してリアルな体験を行うことの価値に関して、「交通」と「活動」の観点から科学的に評価・計測する方法論を確立することである。初年度である令和2年度は、移動を伴う活動(実空間活動)とICT(情報通信技術)を利用したサイバー活動の相違について既往文献の整理を行い、ミクロ経済学の効用の概念を用いて実空間活動とサイバー活動の選択行動の分析フレームワークを提案した。
    次に、実空間活動とサイバー活動の効率性や活動の満足度などを評価することを目的に、 2020年3月に実施した「通勤とテレワーク」や「業務移動とテレビ会議」に関するwebアンケート調査データを用いて、フィジカルな移動とICT利用におけるリスク認知や満足度の比較を行った。さらに、テレワークへの意向について南関東、東海、関東での比較分析を行った。その結果、テレワークのリスク認知には地域による違いはなかったが、通勤のリスク認知には、移動手段による違いがあることが明らかとなった。また、テレワーク意向のモデル分析結果からは、これらのリスク認知がテレワーク意向に影響を及ぼすことが確認できた。
    COVID-19の影響により、テレワークやオンライン会議を経験する人が増加したことから、2021年3月にも同様のアンケート調査を実施し基礎分析を行った。理想の通勤とテレワークを尋ねたところ、全部通勤との回答が最も多く、次に1:1と回答する人が多かった。実空間活動とサイバー活動それぞれには個々人が感じる利点と欠点があることが示唆された。
    計画通りに進んでいる
    本研究では、「ICTと移動の価値に関する研究」、「移動と健康に関する研究」、「ICTと移動量に関する研究」の3つの研究を実施する。「ICTと移動の価値に関する研究」では、移動を伴わないヴァーチャル参加と、移動を伴うリアル参加でのコミュニケーションの効率性や活動の満足度などを評価する。具体的には、昨年度実施した、「通勤とテレワーク」や「業務移動とテレビ会議」に関するwebアンケート調査データを用いて、リスク認知や満足度とリアル参加とバーチャル参加の代替性について分析を行う。「移動と健康に関する研究」では、移動と健康に関する調査データ等を用いて,移動が健康に及ぼす影響について分析を行う。「ICTと移動量に関する研究」では、e-shoppingなどICTの利用状況と移動頻度、利用可能な交通手段、普段の交通行動や個人属性など分析に必要な項目を整理し、webアンケート調査を実施し、分析を行う。

    In this research project, mainly two studies were conducted;(1)the relation between driving stress, driving behavior, and traffic accident experience;(2)the relation among driving behavior, traffic accidents, and personality traits in Japan, China, and Vietnam.
    In the first study, the characteristics of roads with high or low driving stress were clarified and road infrastructures with less stress were proposed. The structure among driving stress, violation behavior and traffic accident involvement was confirmed. It the second study, the result revealed that the respondents with accident experiments and lower agreeableness characteristics were more prone to commit aggressive violations among three countries. Further, Japanese and Vietnamese female drivers with high scores on Conscientiousness were found to be less likely to commit ordinary violations.

    This research investigated the public consciousness to and the existing value (option value) of sharing mobility in semi-mountainous area. The targeted mobility includes the existing public transport, such as bus and taxi, and future public transport, such as ride-share and autonomous cars.
    Firstly, the depthful literature review was conducted. In addition, the methodology for estimating option value of public transport with very low use frequency was developed. Based on those works, the questionnaire was established and conducted through web survey. The result of option value estimation shows that the option value is strongly influenced by the service level of the mobility and elderly people tend to show the higher value than other people.

    This project has delivered the following outcomes which are academically and practically appealing. (1) Evacuation behavior is investigated in relation to emergency situations of the relatives and friends based on the probe-person survey by the newly developed interactive learning method fused with conventional stated preference surveys. (2) An emergent flow model considering information propagation is developed and reveals impacts of information provision on the evacuation performance through the application to Ishinomaki. (3) For dynamic risk management, the public transport management scheme, the optimal evacuation policy and strategies that avoid gridlocks are investigated using real field data observed in our recent disasters.
