This paper describes our study on AI player creation for a picture-guessing card game Dixit. In the game, the active player makes up a phrase (or sentence) that describes the image on one of her hand. The relation between the image and the phrase had better be moderate as she scores nothing if all other players or no player guesses correctly. We analyze the process of human thinking in each phase of the game and implement each processing by using widely available techniques or databases including Google Cloud Vision API and Wikipedia Entity Vector. We show the AI player can play the game with human players as we expected. We also present a new perspective on the study of human cognition based on this approach.

The prisoner's dilemma game has been used widely to address the question of how cooperation emerges among selfish individuals. Press & Dyson (2012) have greatly expanded our understanding of this game by proposing so-called Zero-Determinant (ZD) strategies that impose a fixed linear relationship between one's own payoff and that of the other. Extortion strategies, a subset of ZD strategies, can have a higher payoff than the opponent, but, as is the same with other ZD strategies, they are not evolutionarily stable as they have a small payoff when playing with themselves. This study investigates the performance of Extortion strategies when they are provided with mobility, in other words, they could continue to play with novel strategies. The experiments show that the proportion of them has a peak when the speed of their movement is moderate, among the population of Extortion, TFT, ALLC and ALLD.

We aimed to understand how a shift from material to informational aspects of shared resources, which corresponds to a shift from ancestral to modern human societies, can accelerate the coevolutionary process of cognitive and communicative linguistic abilities of human-kind. For this aim, we extended our integrated model of gene-culture coevolution of language by incorporating the resource finiteness (e.g., high: limited food resources; low: always beneficial knowledge) into resource sharing processes based on cognitive and communicative abilities of individuals in a two-dimensional linguistic space in which both languages and individual abilities are allowed to evolve. Using the extended model, we made and compared computer simulations with different settings of the resource finiteness. The result showed that the decrease in the resource finiteness can increase the adaptive evolution of languages via the acceleration of the cyclic coevolution process of the linguistic abilities for individuals and languages due to the decrease in the linguistic diversity.

We have proposed DERC, a conceptual platform of gamified systems with a dual layer structure for promoting reciprocity-based cooperation in targeted social contexts. Level 1 aims at promoting altruistic behavior by game elements (e.g. points and levels). Level 2 aims to promote altruistic behavior of others in which a betting mechanism is used. If the betted player obtains points by altruistic action, the bettor gets points. This study introduces DERC into VR space dedicated for discussion. We find that the system can realize fruitful discussion. We also find that the clarity of the acquisition points leads to the improvement of the motivation for discussion.

We communicate information by displaying a set of social behaviors conveyed through facial expressions, audible inputs, etc. Our purpose is to develop an experimental framework for understanding human social dynamics in a physically-situated and real-time decision-making environment using IoT. Each participant has a beacon integrated in a Raspberry Pi Zero device, which uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology to exchange signals between other devices. Each participant displaces and shares their current game-theoretical strategy with the neighboring participants on a small LCD screen mounted on the device. They are asked to maximize the accumulated score which is measured from all the payoffs received from the neighbors, scaled by how far apart they are, meaning that the distance between participants reflects their social closeness. We used a zone-based positioning approach which involved identifying the neighboring zone in which a participant is currently present based on the received signal strength (RSSI) from the beacon, and can be classified as immediate, near or far from it, which gives us an estimate of the social network of the participants. We show the applicability of this framework by conducting preliminary experiments with a few participants which confirmed the interactivity feature we seek.

We aim at understanding the evolutionary scenario of acoustic communication by investigating the hypothesis that acoustical communication in terrestrial animals originated from noises that are contingent with breathing or gestures associated with predation or feeding. We are developing an evolutionary model of virtual creatures composed of blocks in a 3D physically simulated environment. Sounds are generated by physical contact of virtual creatures, which are perceived by and possibly affect the other creatures. This paper is to clarify whether and how an acoustic structure around distributed resources can affect the evolution of virtual creatures. The creatures within a distance of fixed radius from a resource block can equally share the amount of the resource. We conducted experiments with three settings of the resource radius and found that the population progressively evolved to share the resources by listening to sound from the sound source around resources.

© 2020 The Authors. Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of Zoological Society of London. Ecoacoustics needs sophisticated acoustic monitoring tools to extract a wide level of features from an observed mixture of sounds. We have developed a portable acoustic monitoring system called ‘HARKBird’ which consists of a laptop PC and an inexpensive commercial microphone array with the robot audition software HARK. HARKBird can extract acoustic events in a recording, and we can obtain the begin and end timings, the spatial information (e.g., position or direction from the microphone array), and the spectrogram of the sound separated from the original recording. In this study, we report how robot audition techniques contribute to monitoring spatio-spectro-temporal dynamics of bird behaviors, using an extended and minimal system based on multiple microphone arrays. The dimension reduction of separated sounds is important to integrate the information from multiple microphone arrays. As a dimension reduction algorithm, we use t-SNE to help manual annotation of each sound and to generate the vocalization distribution automatically. We conduct playback experiments to Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus) to simulate different cases of territorial intrusions (song/call/no playback). Our hypothesis in playback experiments is that playback of conspecific vocalizations would invoke aggressive responses of males against song playbacks and the effects would be more prominent than those of call playbacks. Our primary aim is to test whether our system can extract the necessary information on the aggressiveness of target individuals to examine our hypothesis. We show the system with manual annotation of vocalizations can extract their different spatio-spectro-temporal dynamics in different conditions, which supported our hypothesis. We also consider the spectral affinity-based automatic matching of localized sounds from different microphone arrays. The relative number of localized songs depending on the playback conditions reflected a similar trend to those in the manual approach, implying that we can grasp the long-term dynamics of vocalizations without costly annotations.

In the framework of competitive coevolutionary algorithms, focusing refers to the ability of coevolving opponents to challenge one another by testing weak dimensions of performance. An issue which arises in this context is overspecialization. In particular, since the fitness of individuals depends on comparisons with opponents, biased diversity of phenotype in one population biases diversity of phenotype in the other population. In order to solve this issue, we attempt to create ideal evolutionary pressure for one population by applying a method which controls diversity of phenotype to another population. This paper proposes a method of fitness sharing based on the similarity of behavior of individuals to solve this issue.

    Grant amount:\4290000 ( Direct Cost: \3300000 、 Indirect Cost:\990000 )
