Intention of teleworking considering risk perceptions of commuting and ICT use in three major metropolitan areas in Japan Open Access

Teleworking has been disseminated throughout the world with the spread of the coronavirus, which has instigated changes in our workstyle. To better understand teleworking, a web-based questionnaire survey was conducted at the end of March 2020. The survey included 3,500 respondents who worked and lived in three metropolitan areas in Japan. In this study, the choice and intention to telework were analyzed while considering the trade-off between commuting and teleworking as well as incorporating the cost and benefit of both commuting and teleworking. The commuting cost includes travel time, travel-related risks (contracting COVID-19), and satisfaction with travel scale. For the cost of teleworking, risks of ICT use were incorporated. The work satisfaction with teleworking compared to office-based work was measured by incorporating social presence as a predictor. Further, socioeconomic attributes such as age, family composition, type of work, and type of industries were considered. The binary probit and ordered probit model were applied to the analysis. The estimation results showed that risk perceptions, travel satisfaction, and work quality of teleworking considerably affected the individual's preference to telework. The findings are expected to provide valuable insight into urban planning and transportation system designs resistant to the risk of infectious diseases.

Recognising the factors that shape the public acceptance of hydrogen refuelling facilities is essential for gaining social support for the widespread implementation of hydrogen infrastructure. This study applies a cross-national research perspective to investigate the public acceptance of hydrogen refuelling facilities using stated-preference survey data. Moreover, multidimensional explanatory variables encompassing hydrogen energy awareness levels, hydrogen refuelling station configurations, residential characteristics, car ownership and use, and sociodemographics are used to interpret public acceptance. The data revealed that 21.1 %, 45.5 %, and 31.5 % of the respondents in Japan, Spain, and Norway expressed support for such facilities near their residences, respectively. An important discovery was the validation of nonproportional odds in acceptance measurements across countries, which challenges the conventional assumptions of parallel regression and suggests that distinct behavioural determinants shape positive, negative, and neutral attitudes. Consequently, a generalised ordinal logistic regression approach was applied to identify the determinants of varying acceptance levels and mitigate the biases from nonproportional odds. In addition to identifying facilitators and hindrances, the results highlight several predictors with polarising effects. These findings provide public feedback for enhancing the planning of hydrogen infrastructure and offer potential pathways for hydrogen risk communication and policymaking.

Residential dissonance and changes in travel satisfaction: Evidence from Japanese dual-earner couples 査読有り国際共著

This study examined the extent to which residential dissonance affected changes in travel satisfaction before and during the pandemic. We conducted a gender-specific analysis using data from 540 spouses in 270 households in Greater Nagoya, Japan. The results showed that for women, the negative dissonance of accessibility and neighborhood socialization may deteriorate commute satisfaction, while the negative dissonance of car alternatives may decrease non-commute satisfaction. For men, the positive dissonance of aesthetics decreased non-commute satisfaction. Moreover, men who decreased car use reported a decrease in commute satisfaction. Men who cycled less frequently experienced a decrease in non-commute satisfaction, while women who cycled more frequently reported an increase in non-commute satisfaction. The findings suggest the importance of gender in travel satisfaction and suggest that intervention strategies should be tailored to address the needs of specific population subgroups, such as working women in dual-earner households.

As green hydrogen plays an increasingly pivotal role in shaping sustainable economies and society, understanding public acceptance of hydrogen becomes imperative for fostering social support towards hydrogen energy transitions. This study employs a survey-based structural equation modelling method to analyse public perceptions and acceptance of hydrogen technology, fuel cell vehicles, and refuelling infrastructure based on technology acceptance theory. The results highlight the positive impact of the perceived usefulness of hydrogen energy and refuelling stations on individual acceptance levels. A notable discovery reveals that perceived risk consequences significantly influence individuals’ acceptance of nearby refuelling infrastructure, whereas perceived risk likelihood does not. Moreover, this study establishes psychological connections among diverse dimensions of hydrogen acceptance: technology acceptance is found to correlate positively with acceptance of refuelling infrastructure, indicating a pathway for cultivating public acceptance from cognitive to practical levels. The acceptance of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles exhibits mediating effects on this pathway, signifying mutual benefits for stakeholders in promoting hydrogen mobility and establishing refuelling infrastructure.

With increasing concerns about recent hydrogen-related accidents in leading countries applying hydrogen energy, maintaining public trust in hydrogen infrastructure is crucial for advancing energy transitions. This study investigates how individuals aware and unaware of hydrogen-related accidents perceive the risk of hydrogen refuelling facilities in Japan. The comparative analysis reveals that accident awareness significantly increases public apprehension by amplifying perceived accident probabilities and consequences. Specifically, accident-aware individuals value their subjective understanding of hydrogen knowledge more than objective knowledge when it comes to trusting hydrogen technologies. The direct impact of positive affect on alleviating risk perceptions is found to be counteracted by accident awareness. In terms of behavioural outcomes, this study confirms individuals' inclination to seek information based on their perceived risk. People are more eager to acquire risk preparedness information when they perceive the potential consequences of undesired events as significant. In contrast, the perceived likelihood of risk accidents does not exhibit such a significant relationship. The findings offer valuable insights for recognising circumstances in which the communication of risk preparedness initiatives becomes crucial in the aftermath of accidents.

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant preventive measures worldwide have accelerated a change in the way millions of people work. Telework became necessary to prevent the spread of coronavirus and reduce office workers’ health risk. The change in employees’ workstyle may directly impact commuters’ travel behavior, which affects individuals’ residential area choices and companies’ office location choices, ultimately affecting urban development and transportation infrastructures. This research aims to investigate preferences for telework among Japanese employees and, in hybrid workstyles, identify the factors that affect the best trade-off between commuting-based work and telework. A web-based questionnaire collected data which was analyzed using ordered probit modeling. Results revealed that 25% of non-telecommuters want to switch to telework and that the number of workers who want 100% telework increased from 4.9% to 8%. Regression analysis showed a strong influence of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics on the choice between commuting and ICT-based work. Results of this study make it possible to understand office workers’ intentions to work remotely and predict how this will affect economic activity distribution within urban areas. It is also possible to consider an actual case of the implementation of ICT infrastructure for specific segments of society.</p>

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (HFCV) adopters need to continue their vehicle ownership in the subsequent years to achieve the HFCV-related targets set by the Japanese government. In this study, we explored the discontinuance rate of HFCV ownership through a questionnaire survey conducted among HFCV adopters in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, who were wanting to continue or discontinue their ownership. Results showed that the discontinuance rate was remarkably high. Approximately 50% of the private HFCV adopters, who purchased their vehicles between 2014 and 2020, wished to discontinue their HFCV ownership owing to factors such as driving range, vehicle performance, future viability, fuel tank safety, and density of stations. Furthermore, we showed that the discontinuance trend was correlated with the dissatisfaction of HFCV adopters with the driving range and future viability. As a result, they foresee a bleak future owing to the sparse refueling stations network and higher purchase price compared to other vehicle powertrains such as electric and hybrid vehicles. Therefore, to reduce the discontinuance rate and keep HFCVs in the market, Japanese stakeholders must address the concern of HFCV owners.
