Graduate education needs to not only develop specialized knowledge and skills but also nurture transferable skills that would enable graduate students to play active roles in various professions. The Doctoral Education Consortium at Nagoya University has compiled a list of transferable skills that graduate students should acquire as a “PhD skills framework.” This framework helps graduate students to identify skills they should develop from a wide variety of skills options and to set up opportunities in order to acquire those selected skills. This framework is expected to draw the attention of faculty and students of the whole Nagoya University community to the significance of these skills and become a starting point to provide a learning environment for skills development. This paper describes the background, purpose, components, process of the creation, and effective use of the framework to support the independent learning of skills. It identifies future challenges to the framework. This paper hopes to work as a resource for similar attempts by Nagoya University and other universities to assist in the skills development of graduate students.

In recent times, admission offices and the academics working there have been targeted for development. Particularly at the national universities, there is a specific mission to respond to the reform of the admissions system mandated by the government, and this has brought a rapid increase in the numbers of offices and academicsin- charge. However, very little information about these departments and personnel has been accumulated. In the present study, an interview was conducted on the current practices and careers of the admissions office academics at the national universities of Japan. As a result, a large diversity of roles and careers were identified. Nevertheless, several commonalities were found. Almost all the informants noted a lack of clarity regarding their duties and employment contracts, and they underscored the importance of their research and teaching roles. The findings of this study indicate the need for clearer vision and more effective support for the career paths of admissions office academics. Every aspect of these personnel’s training should be given increased consideration because not only are they experts who help fulfill the institutional mandate for reform, but also believe they are responsible for the teaching and research that helps lay the foundations of their profession.

The current government in Japan is prioritizing university reform as one of its policies for Japanese revitalization. In fact, university reform is not a new word. Universities have made several reforms since the 1990s. However, a recent government policy has necessitated multidimensional reforms in all functions of education, research, and social service. These requirements include an emphasis on learning outcomes, international 'tuning' of teaching contents, internationalization of universities, establishment of world-class research universities, professionalization of research administration, contribution towards innovation, and further development of innovative talents. This policy calls for connections between higher education policy and science and technology (S&T) policy, but this has not yet been fully achieved. Additionally, a disconnection can be observed between higher education research and S&T policy research. In this special issue, researchers in the higher education, S&T policy, and STS (science technology and society) fields, as well as the Vice-president for Research contribute to the discussion on current issues in Japanese universities.

Several Japanese universities now integrate University Research Administrators (URA). The field of research administration has garnered attention due to changes in the research funding system, financial requirements of universities for funding approval, newly-implemented research evaluations, and recent cases of research misconduct that have resulted in calls for appropriate responses from academic institutions. Establishment of research administration departments in Japanese universities began in around 2000, with subsequent acknowledgement of the importance of research administration and administrators in Japanese policy documents. URA numbers increased with the 2011 launch of URA programs. As a precedent to Japan’s action, other nations’ institutions introduced URA programs. Professional associations have been established to define the required expertise, certify professionals, and develop personnel. The nature of research and researcher mindset dictate further URA development in Japan along these lines: (1) establishing successful models should be prioritized, (2) research administration’s purpose should not be limited to securing funding, and (3) URA positions must avoid being overly perceived as alternative post-doctorate careers. These guidelines can expand the role of stakeholders in the research process for extensive development of university research.

In 2002, the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering was established as a small institution in a Boston suburb specified by undergraduate engineering education. The college set up its targets to motivate students to cultivate a lifelong learning, and illuminates them with engineering design, interdisciplinarity and teamworking. These were not brand-new concepts in reforming engineering education, but somewhat difficult to realize because of the interferences such as the traditions and customs. The notable features of its curriculum are summarized as follows ; the project-based learning (PBL) are introduced to a half of courses, the engineering design education is placed across the curriculum, and the Senior Capstone Program in Engineering (SCOPE, a year-long PBL program where students collaborate with industrial partners) was set as the culmination of learning.

The present paper reports a study of the British case of improving career management of contract research staff (CRS) in universities through literature survey, which derives implications for policies on science and technology personnel and for university strategies on human resource development in Japan. Recently, the Japanese government has demonstrated more concern about science and technology personnel and just initiated programs to support independent research and career-path diversification of young scholars. The projects supported by those programs have been carried out dispersed widely throughout Japan, while the British case involves a focused coordinated way of improvement; a career-management standard has been provided through a nation-wide concordat with signatories of university principals, funding agencies, and academic societies, followed by financial support to and monitoring of pilot good-practices. Features differentiating the British case from the Japanese approach have been clarified as better awareness of CRS in universities, training research managers, developing tools and handbooks on career management, and systematized career management.

本研究では日本の大学院教育について、大学院生と教員に対するインタビュー調査と質問紙調査から明らかにする。近年、大学の教育研究活動により、複雑かつ広範囲の社会的問題の解決への寄与を目指す、社会変革型の科学技術イノベーション政策が推進されている。他方で、既往研究における大学院教育への着目に背景には卓越した研究の推進にあり、大学院の学位取得者が少なさ、経済的支援の不足、狭いキャリアパスなどの課題に焦点が当てられ、研究大学の博士課程やポスドクが主な対象で、それ以外は検討の対象外とされることが多く、現実の変化を必ずしも十分に捉えていない。本研究は幅広い観点から、大学院教育の現在と将来展望を検討する。
本研究では大学教員と大学院生に対する実態調査を通じて、変化する大学院教育の実態・
課題・可能性を明らかにし、これからの大学院教育を議論するための基礎的な検討を行うことである。
大規模な質問紙調査は2024年度に実施予定であるため、初年度については、大学院教育に関する政策のレビュー、既存研究のレビューを中心に行った。また学校基本調査等から大学院教育に関して、時系列の動向、修士・博士課程に分けた分野別の動向など、基礎的な情報の整理を行った。日本の大学院教育に関する研究は、大きく３つのタイプにわけられることが分かった。第一は、卓越した研究の推進という観点からの研究で、大学院の学位取得者が少なさ、経済的支援の不足、狭いキャリアパスなどが指摘されているが、研究大学の博士課程やポスドクが主な対象で、それ以外は対象外とされることが多い。第二は、特定の政策プログラムの効果検証や分野に特化した議論もあるが、どこまで一般化ができるかは不明である。第三は、大学院政策の中心的課題の拡充した大学院教育の行方を検証する目的の研究で、個人指導からコースワークなど組織化が主な論点で、主に修士課程が対象である。こうした一連の検討を通じて、本研究で解明したい問いや仮説についての検討を行った。
仮説生成のためのインタビュー調査の実施については遅れ気味である。
2024年度に大学院生と大学教員をセットにした質問紙調査を行い、変化している大学院教育の実態をとらえる。2025年度はそれまでに行った研究の取りまとめを実施する。

We considered citizens not as recipients of scientific results but as supporters of science, and examined several aspects of the actual situation: the characteristic case of the Nagoya University Astronomy Association, in which citizens' groups have supported scientific research financially and non-financially; the actual situation of support for scientific research through crowdfunding; and the activities of amateur scientists, who play a direct role in scientific research. Beginners studying physics often feel that various physical concepts and laws seems to be independent each other. The purpose of this research is the development of teaching methods and the instrument to help students to build systematic understanding. Simple tests on the physics concepts of dynamics revealed the lack of understanding of connections among them, especially between point mass dynamics and rigid body dynamics. To lead students to systematic understanding of point mass and rigid body dynamics, we designed and built an instrument to use for demonstrations. 平成２４年度においては、実施計画のうち、a)国内の大学・研究機関の研究倫理教育事例調査については、大学等の研究倫理教育の実践例とその成果に関する情報の収集を行った。b)海外の事例調査に関しては、昨年度に引き続き、米国大学院協議会（ＣＧＳ）が2004年から2011年にかけて実施した研究倫理に関するプロジェクトに関して情報を入手するとともに、その内容を分析した。c)学会単位のガイドライン等の調査については、昨年度入手した文系を含む全分野の主要８８０学協会について倫理規定や研究不正に関する規定等の関連情報を整理するとともに、d)安全規制等の公的ガイドライン、法的規制等についても昨年度に続いて収集を行った。e)教育内容（教材、カリキュラム等）の開発に関しては、２時間ないし数時間の短期コースの開発、生命医療系等ヒトを対象とする研究分野の研究倫理教育の開発に着手した。また、責任ある研究実践の主要課題である論文発表におけるグレーゾーンの扱いに関して、「バンクーバー・ルール」を主題とした教材の開発に着手した。これらについては、教材等の開発と並行してf)教育方法の開発（講義等での試行実験）を行い、試行に関してビデオ記録を行い、分析に備えた。
なお、研究代表者の転出により本課題は廃止となったが、これまでに収集・分析した情報やその他の成果は研究分担者や他の研究者に継承されており、研究代表者を含め何らかの形で成果をまとめ、実践に活用する予定である。

市民の科学リテラシー向上、研究者・市民間の科学コミュニケーションの質向上を目指す様々な取り組みの改善に資するため、市民が主としてポピュラー文化媒体(TV番組、映画、広告、雑誌・新聞等)を通じて形成している科学および科学者についての先行的イメージを、多様な比較軸を設定することによって多角的に調査・分析するという研究目的に即して以下を実施した。
これまでに英語圏の文化研究で行われてきたpopular cultureにおける科学(者)イメージの研究についてサーヴェイした。我が国のTV番組、映画、漫画、CM、雑誌・新聞記事等の媒体において、科学や科学者がいかなるものとして提示される傾向があるかを、物語分析、語彙分析、記号論的分析、ステレオタイプ研究等の手法を用いて明らかにする作業をさらにすすめた。また、2009年度にWashington DCで行われた4Sにおいて発表した質問紙調査結果のさらなる分析をすすめた。
