Geranium yesoense (Geraniaceae) includes several varieties that are mainly discriminated by two morphological features, namely, the degree of leaf incision and the density of spreading hairs on the sepals, but these features have never been objectively quantified. To clarify whether these features can truly discriminate varieties, we analyzed leaf shape and sepal pubescence, and conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis using nuclear and chloroplast DNA. Our morphological analyses showed some trends in the leaf morphology and density of hairs, but failed to identify any groupings that could be clearly distinguished on the basis of these features. Our molecular analysis recognized the species G. yesoense as a distinct taxon, but did not support the existence of subgroups within the species. We conclude that G. yesoense must be treated as one taxon with some tendency toward morphological variation by locality and habitat.

Reproductive Interference is a negative interspecific interaction during reproductive processes, which may act a critical role in displacement of native species by its alien congeners. To understand the alien RI effect on distributional relationships of Japanese Taraxacum, we focused on a native species in Izu Peninsula, putatively T. platycalpum, and investigated the coexistence with the alien congener T. officinale and its vulnerability to the alien RI. Our field survey revealed strong negative correlations in the local density between the native and the alien, and reductions in seed-set of the native only when relative abundance of the alien was 80 % or more. These results suggest considerable negative effects of the alien RI on the native in Izu only if the native is the small minority at a spatial scale within which RI works, but otherwise the native should be impervious to the alien.

The Asian members of the Persea group are divided among the genera Alseodaphne, Apollonias, Dehaasia, Machilus, Nothaphoebe and Phoebe. A recent phylogenetic analysis has shown that Machilus and Phoebe are supported as monophyletic genera but evidence that the closely related genera Alseodaphne, Dehaasia and Nothaphoebe are monophyletic or not was equivocal. In this study we analyzed cuticle characters of 95 collections belonging to the Asian members except for Apollonias. We anticipated two possible outcomes. If the genera were not monophyletic, we expected that the groups based on cuticle characters would consist of species belonging to different genera. If the genera were monophyletic, we expected that the groups based on cuticle characters would consist of species belonging to the same genus. We found 16 groups based on cuticles. Of these, 12 consisted of species of a single genus (one group included a single species and thus a single genus). The four mixed groups included mostly species of one genus with 1 or 2 species of a different genus. Our results support the recognition of Alseodaphne, Dehaasia, Machilus, Nothaphoebe and Phoebe as distinct genera.

Here we document a novel phenomenon that, based on field observations in central Japan, cleistogamous flowers (or closed flowers) of an annual herb Lamium amplexicaule were dominantly expressed near an alien congener L. purpureum. The proportion of cleistogamous flowers in an individual L. amplexicaule increased with the frequency of L. purpureumoccurring in the same patches
but did not increase with the total density of Lamium plants and their own size. To confirm the consistency of the effect of the coexisting alien species, we assessed the cleistogamous frequency at the patch level for three other populations. In these populations
as well, the proportion of L. amplexicaule producing cleistogamous flowers increased with the frequency of L. purpureum. Our transplant experiment at one site found no effect of the nearby presence of L. purpureum on the seed set of L. amplexicaule and therefore did not support the hypothesis that the adverse effect on the reproduction via interspecific pollination favored
cleistogamous flowers that accepted no external pollen. Further studies must be conducted to examine the negative interactions between the related species before and after seed development.

Geranium robertianum L. is considered an endangered species in Japan, while it is invasive in several
countries outside Japan. Recently, plants of G. robertianum have been found at several localities, none of
which are original stations for G. robertianum in Japan. To determine whether the recently found plants
are native Japanese plants or were naturalized from sources outside Japan, we conducted molecular phylogenetic
analyses using DNA sequences of the plastid regions of the trn L intron, trnL3'-trnF and trnHpsbA
intergenic spacer regions, and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS). Among 32 samples
collected from 21 populations, we recognized three major groups, consisting of 1) recently found plants,
    2) indigenous plants, and 3) plants from Britain. Our results suggest that recently discovered plants of G.
robertianum in Japan are more likely naturalized from sources outside Japan rather than having escaped
from indigenous Japanese populations. The origin of the newly found plants is not known although their
    origin in Britain is unlikely.

Reproductive interference (RI) refers to negative interspecific interactions in which the reproductive activities of one species directly reduce the reproductive success of another species. RI can be observed in various events in plant reproductive processes, such as stigma clogging and pollen allelopathy. The most conspicuous feature of RI is its positive frequency dependence and its self-reinforcing impact via positive feedback: when two species exert RI on one another, the more abundant species exerts a more intense adverse effect on the reproductive success of the other and then becomes more abundant. Therefore, two species that exert RI on each other essentially cannot co-exist, even if the interfering effect is subtle. Increasing numbers of studies have verified the effects of RI in plants, but the phenomenon is still misunderstood. Here, we present a theoretical outline of RI, discriminating it from hybridization or pollen competition, and address its pivotal importance in the relationships between invasive plants and native relatives, the exclusive distributions of closely related species, and character displacement between these species.

Reproductive interference (RI), defined as the fitness cost of interspecific sexual interactions, such as interspecific pollen transfer (IPT) in plants, is ecologically important. Theoretically, RI could result in competitive exclusion, as it operates in a frequency-dependent manner. Additionally, IPT may have a greater range than resource competition, although information about the range of IPT is lacking. In the present study, we measured the range of IPT exerted by Taraxacum officinale (an alien species) on a native dandelion, T. japonicum. We used two approaches. In one, we analyzed the RI effect on a native seed set at three spatial scales. In the second, we tracked IPT from alien to native flower heads using fluorescent pigments as markers. We estimated that pollination distances were in the order of several meters. These distances exceeded the mean distance from each native plant to the nearest alien. As hypothesized, the effect of RI reached farther than neighboring individuals. These data indicate the spatial range from which alien dandelions should be removed to allow the conservation of natives.

Fine leaf structures, such as leaf domatia or trichomes, are considered to affect the population abundance and diversity of foliar mites on forest trees and shrubs; however, the effect of such structures on seasonal fluctuations in foliar mite populations in forest ecosystems remains unknown. The authors conducted a 2-year survey on the outskirts of Kyoto on the mite assemblage found on Viburnum erosumvar. punctatum(VEP), a deciduous shrub bearing domatia and stellate hairs, and on its seasonal fluctuations. A census was also conducted on the acarofauna on 14 sympatric tree or shrub species; these communities were then compared with those found on VEP. On VEP, fungivorous mites, Winterschmidtiidae and Tydeoidea, showed continuous occurrence from late March to November, and phytoseiid mites were recorded from May to November. Eriophyioid mites were only found in spring and autumn. Total mite density was significantly higher on plant species with fine structures, and the acarofauna on such plants showed high similarity among seasons. Our data suggest that leaf-surface structures play important roles in structuring foliar mite communities throughout the seasons.

We report on the cuticular features of a number of Lauraceae species belonging to the genera Aspidostemon, Beilschmiedia, Cryptocarya and Potameia, all from Madagascar. The goal of this project was to ascertain if cuticular features could be used to determine the generic placement of a poorly known species previously placed in Cryptocarya and Aspidostemon and of several specimens which combine characters of Potameia and Beilschmiedia. We conclude that cuticular features define groups of species or genera of Lauraceae and that these characters are a promising tool in solving the generic placement of poorly known species or specimens which possess characters typical of more than one genus.

Reproductive interference (RI) may reduce fitness of either of the involved species, with potentially important ecological consequences. To testify a hypothesis that RI from alien species causes displacement of native plants, we conducted a comparative study on native dandelion populations that had different distributional relationships with the alien dandelions to examine association between the effect of the alien RI and the degree of displacement of the natives. We also compared different mechanisms of RI in one of the populations to clarify the responsible factor.
We found that RI from the aliens to the natives was strong in regions where the aliens outnumbered the natives and marginal where they did not; this result suggests that alien RI can critically affect distributional relationships between native and alien species. We also found that among the examined mechanisms, heterospecific pollen deposition might have the largest deleterious effect on the native species.
