    洋上風力発電は脱炭素社会を実現する上で高いポテンシャルを持つエネルギー源と して注目される一方で、鳥類が風車のブレードに衝突する「バードストライク」が多発して いる。そのため、再生エネルギーの普及と生態系保全の両立を図る上で、洋上風発建設予定地域における鳥の衝突リスクの汎用的な評価手法の確立が強く求められている。本研究は最先端のバイオロギング技術を用いた海鳥の行動計測と鳥の飛行の物理法則に基づいた数理統計モデルを組み合わせることで、種や場所を選ばずに、海上風の分布を海鳥の分布に変換するハザードマップ関数の構築を目的とする。

    人間社会と野生動物の距離が近づくにつれ、動物の移動分散に伴って生じる様々な生態系問題(獣害や風発衝突など)を包括的に解決するアプローチが強く求められるようになってきた。本研究ではこの要求に対して、解決の難しい問題を現在抱えている飛翔動物(鳥とコウモリ)の移動分散を最先端の動物搭載型センサを用いて追跡し、高精度・高解像度の移動情報と風況データを統合するモデリングとシミュレーションを実現して、生物移動予測の基盤技術を高度化する。
    人間社会と野生動物の距離が近づくにつれ、動物の移動分散に伴って生じる様々な生態系問題(獣害や風発衝突など)を包括的に解決するアプローチが強く求められるようになってきた。本研究ではこの要求に対して、解決の難しい問題を現在抱えている飛翔動物(鳥とコウモリ)の移動分散を最先端の動物搭載型センサを用いて追跡し、高精度・高解像度の移動情報と風況データを統合するモデリングとシミュレーションを実現して、生物移動予測の基盤技術を高度化する。本年度は機材調達の後、新潟県で育雛するオオミズナギドリと青森県で育雛するウミネコに対して、ロガーの取り付けを行った。また、沖縄のオオコウモリに対してバイオロギングによる採餌移動経路の記録も行い、季節や成熟度による夜間移動の違い等に関して分析を行った。解析と論文発表に関しては、ヒトが作り出す移動経路(ヨットレースの経路)と、ワタリアホウドリの移動経路のデータを扱い、ミクロの力学的共通性がマクロの移動経路の相似形を生み出すことを示した論文を発表した(Goto, Yoda et al. PNAS)。まず、アホウドリとヨットの移動経路の多様性と類似性(直線的にゴールに向かうこともあれば、大きくジグザグに進みながらゴールに向かうこともある)を指摘した。次に、GPSデータを解析し、風に対してどちらに向かえばどの程度の速さで飛べるかという、風に対する速度性能が類似していることを示した。さらに、この速度性能の類似性が、マクロスケール(500km)の移動経路の類似性を生み出すことを示した。言い換えると、ヨットもアホウドリも、ゴールへ到着する時間を最小化していることが示された。さらに、海鳥の移動データから推定された風を同化し、風況の解析及び台風位置推定への影響を調査した結果、鳥データを加えることで台風中心気圧の予測に高い再現度をもたらすことが確認された。
    鳥類、コウモリ類ともに、当初の計画以上に行動データを得ることができた。さらに、飛翔動物と風に関する解析も、統計モデルやデータ同化などの異なる方面から進行している。特に、過去に発見した、オオミズナギドリが台風の目に向かうことを明らかにした研究(Lempidakis, Yoda et al. PNAS 2022)を発展させ、GPSと加速度データを用いた解析から、台風の中でどのようにオオミズナギドリが飛翔しているかについての理解が進展した。また、飛行に働く力学的な制約がマクロスケールの移動経路を生み出す要因であることを明らかしたことは、当初目的の一つである複数の時空間スケールを繋ぐことに成功したことを意味する。また、成果の一部をトップ誌(Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)に発表することができた。これらを鑑みて、おおむね順調に進んでいると判断した。
    野外行動データの取得に関してはおおむね順調に進んでいるため、引き続き野外実験を行っていく。また、得られたデータの解析をさらに進めていく。
    <BR>
    目的達成のために、本年度は機材調達の後、1) 野外生態調査:海鳥とコウモリに超小型ロガーの装着を行い、行動、生態、環境情報を取得する。環境情報の取得には、衛星リモートセンシングや現場観測等も併用する。動物装着型GPSには、AxyTrek(テクノスマート、イタリア)やPinpointtag(Lotek wireless社、UK)などを使用する。新潟県で育雛するオオミズナギドリと青森県で育雛するウミネコに対して、データロガーの取り付けを行う。親鳥が巣にいるときに捕獲し、装置を装着、放鳥する。約1ヶ月後に再度捕獲し、装置を回収する。また、繁殖期終了間際に電波発信型GPSの装着を行い、渡り・越冬に関する移動データを得る。野生のコウモリ(オオコウモリ)に対してGPSロガーを装着して数日から数週間後に回収、夜間の採餌移動生態を調査する。2) 経路解析、映像解析、GIS解析、状態空間モデルなどを用いて、得られたデータを解析する。海鳥の移動データから推定された風を同化し、台風の解析および予測の精度への影響を調査する。

    本研究の基盤となる問いは、脊椎動物の脳の進化過程において脳サイズの増加を駆動した機能的要因は何か、である。そして本研究では「移動に関わる認知能力の必要性が脳サイズの増加を促進した」という仮説を、海鳥をモデルに検証することを目的とする。具体的には海鳥類の移動経路と脳形態について、1) 過去に取得したデータとオープンデータベースを活用した大規模種間比較解析と、2) 野外での実験・ 計測による種間、個体群間および個体間でのより詳細な比較解析を実施し、脳サイズと移動パターンの繋がりを明らかにすることを目指す。 2023年度の研究では、下記の成果を得た。
    新潟県粟島で繁殖するオオミズナギドリ(Calonectris leucomelas)および青森県蕪島で繁殖するウミネコ(Larus crassirostris)を対象に、GPSデータロガーを装着して採餌トリップ中の移動経路を記録した。そして移動パターンを種間比較する前段階として、過去の調査で取得したデータを用いて種ごとおよび個体群ごとの移動経路解析を進めた。また、前年度までの調査で取得したオオミズナギドリの頭部μCT画像を用いて脳形態の解析を進めるとともに、若齢個体の標本を新たに入手してμCTデータを追加した。以上の解析で得られた結果を、学術論文および学会で発表した。

    or sustainable use of marine resources, monitoring anthropogenic stress in Marine Protected Area is required but difficult to achieve in the international high seas. We identified wintering areas of individual Streaked shearwaters and measured total mercury [Hg] of their tail-feathers and POPs of preen-grand oil. Individuals used the same meso-scale areas in the low-latitude western Pacific high seas across years but showed large between-individual variation. Tropic level did not affect [Hg] but sex did. We mapped sex-corrected [Hg] in relation to the individual wintering areas and found that Hg pollution tended to be higher in South China Sea especially in the coastal areas. POPs pollution also tended to be higher in the South China Sea.

    The Systems Science of Biological Navigation (International Activity Support Group) promoted international research activities by holding international competitions on navigation analysis methods, inviting young researchers to travel abroad, and inviting distinguished researchers to Japan. Specifically, with animal and human trajectory datasets made public, we held competitions on algorithms to understand behaviors from the trajectories. The winners of these competitions were invited to international symposiums and conferences hosted by this project, providing opportunities for young researchers and students to interact with each other. This exchange led to the establishment of a new international collaborative research network. In addition, tutorials and workshops were held at several international conferences to discuss the research of this group with overseas researchers.

    In the "Systems Science of Bio-navigation", we aimed to establish a new academic field to measure, analyze, model and verify human and animal movement behavior. As a result of active interdisciplinary research, we have developed a series of state-of-the-art small multidimensional sensor devices called "Logbot" (logging robot). We have also developed a set of softwares for data-driven analysis of the measured multidimensional movement data. By using these methods, we have succeeded in elucidating novel behavior of wild animals and in mathematical modeling of navigation of various animal species.
