Daily precipitation samples for stable isotope analysis
were collected throughout 2003 at Dome Fuji Station,
inland East Antarctica. Stable isotopes show significantly
depleted values with a large seasonal variability, which have
never been obtained. Temporal changes in d-T relation and
d-excess are consistent with those found in geographical
distribution. Precipitation was obtained almost everyday,
though the amounts were quite small (27.6 mm water
equivalent (w.e.) annual total and 0.08 mm w.e. daily
average). Half of the annual precipitation was accumulated
by only 11 events (18 days) without seasonality. Since the
precipitation events occurred under warmer circumstances,
the precipitation-weighted temperature, which should be
related directly to the isotopes, was significantly warmer
than the mean annual surface temperature, which has
usually been adopted as isotopic thermometer. This study
provides significant information to understand present-day
seasonality of precipitation and its isotopic composition in
    inland Antarctica.

We studied diurnal and daily variations in triple oxygen isotopes in the euphotic zone of the Sagami Bay during
summer 2003 and 2004. There were sharp changes in physical processes, driven by changes in wind speeds, during
the study period. Mixed-layer 17D anomalies were negatively correlated with wind speeds, whereas dissolved
oxygen (DO) and chlorophyll a (Chl a) were positively correlated, suggesting that both physical and biological
processes influence the 17D anomaly. Vertical mixing affected estimation of gross oxygen production (GOP) in the
mixed layer, whereas horizontal advection was negligible in the Sagami Bay during the study period. Hourly GOP
estimates are consistent with fast repetition rate fluorometer (FRRF) measurements; relatively higher estimates
from the former method were due to the storing of past productivity signal. Daily integrated production estimated
from 17D anomaly and FRRF were consistent during the entire study period, whereas the estimation from a 18O
spike incubation technique showed good agreement with the other two techniques only when the water mass
structure was unchanged in the mixed layer.

We investigated a new approach to determine age of deposition and paleoclimate changes in annually laminated tufa. Previous studies indicated that the conventional 14C and 234U-230Th methods is difficult for age determination of tufa. To solve this problem, we carried out the high-resolution analyses of stable isotope compositions in annually laminated modern-tufa and paleo-tufa of Nigori River of Asama volcano in central Japan.
Modern tufa δ18O from the riverbed reflected the variation in temperature of river water. Based on the results, we investigated pattern matching between the 25-years paleo-tufa δ18O record of summertime-averaged values and the last 2000 years record of tee-ring width. Results indicated statistically significant six ages, which implies that this approach has a difficulty in uniquely determining the depositional age. However, our approach suggests that the tufa occurrence and geochemical results can constrain the estimated ages.

We reconstructed surface water temperature and salinity using ratios of oxygen isotope and minor metal for living and fossil coral annual bands collected from the Sekisei Lagoon in the Ryukyu Islands. The U-Th dating method was used for re-evaluation of the age determination. The U-Th dating results indicated that the two long-lived fossil coral samples were inhabited during almost the same period, so a rigorous evaluation of the reproducilibity of environmental reconstruction was conducted.
The water temperature during the medieval climatic anomaly was found to be about 2 deg. C lower in summer and 1 deg. C higher in winter than at present throughout the habitat period. It was also found that there was a climatic regime shift in C.E. 1040, specifically a weakening of the East Asian Summer Monsoon.

All molecules are composed of a large number of isotope-substituted molecular species (collectively referred to as isotopologues in this subject), but most of them have not yet been accurately measured. We developed these measurement methods and promptly applied the developed measurement methods to make them an international standard global environmental diagnostic method.
By measuring the natural abundance of isotopologues of important environmental substances, and analyzing the important processes among the three processes of geology, organisms, and humans, the material cycle changes in the earth's surface environment determined by each process and its interaction. Thus, we created a method for environmental diagnosing at the molecular level.
