    都市大気のオゾンの挙動を理解するため、約10年間の名古屋の大気汚染監視局のデータを解析した。特に、春季から夏季にオゾン濃度が増加する季節に、オゾンの光化学生成の前駆物質である窒素酸化物と非メタン炭化水素の濃度比が変化し、オゾンの光化学生成にとって最適な濃度比になることを見出した。その比の変化をもたらした要因として、春季から夏季の植物の成長促進に伴う植物起源の炭化水素の寄与の可能性を示唆した。

    Dimethyl sulfide(DMS) produced by marine phytoplankton is oxidized into sulfate aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei(CCN) in the atmosphere. Accurate measurement of the sea-air DMS flux by such as eddy correlation(EC) method is required to study the impact of DMS on the atmospheric chemistry and radiative processes. In this study, down-sized device for the EC method using fluorine-induced chemiluminescence was developed in order to be installed on the top of foremast of research vessels and to measure the DMS concentration fluctuation with high time resolution. After several performance tests, several observations in the marine air were carried out over the western North Pacific.

    In the global warming, carbon dioxide(CO2) plays an important role and its transport through air-sea interface should be quantitatively evaluated. We have developed on-board eddy-covariance system including energy and trace gas fluxes. Air-sea CO2 flux is leas than an order of magnitude smaller than vegetation over land and should be evaluated very accurately. Eddy-covariance measurement of DMS flux is also tried as well as successful vertical profile method.

  7. Study on processes of dimethyl sulfide production in seawater, its emission to the marine atmosphere and formation of sulfate aerosol

    For simple and quick bulk chemical analysis of suspended particles in seawater, a devise with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer that specialized for light elements was developed. A fast measurement system of atmospheric DMS concentrations based on the fluorine-induced chemiluminescence was also developed and succeeded to employ in the marine air to apply the eddy correlation method on ship board.
    Our shipboard simultaneous measurements of air and sea were carried out as a part of the iron fertilization experiment in the western subarctic North Pacific in the summer (R/V Hakuho-maru), at the Off Sanriku region during the high primary productive period in the spring (R/V Tansei-maru), and survey along 47°N from western to eastern subarctic North Pacific in summer (R/V Mirai). During the phytoplankton bloom caused by iron fertilization, the concentrations of CH_3Br increased. A linear correlation was observed between the concentrations of 19'-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, which is a biomarker of several prymnesiophytes, and CH_3Br in the seawater. After fertilization, the air-sea flux of CH_3Br inside the patch changed from influx to efflux from the ocean.
    Dimethylsulfide, halomethanes, and isoprene in the water and air measured in the western subarctic Pacific revealed that phytoplankton speciation and physiological differences are probably related to the differences of the distribution of VOCs in air and seawater. In the front region of Tsushima warm current, high concentrations of VOCs such as CH_3Br, CH_2I_2 and CH_2CII in seawater were correlated with in atmospheric concentrations. Results of the longitudinal transect along the 47°N, the highest DMS concentrations of seawater were observed between 180°E and 140V corresponding increases in the atmospheric DMS concentrations. At the same time, the concentration of particulate Ca in seawater increased with DMS concentration in seawater. It suggested that detritus of coccolithophorids with CaCO_3 test, reflect DMS concentration in seawater.

  8. Biogeochemical responses of the surface ocean and the lower atmosphere during the meso-scale iron enrichment experiments

    The Southern Ocean, the eastern equatorial Pacific and subarctic Pacific are recognized as HNLC (High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll) oceans, where depletion of iron is an limiting factor of primary production. Mesoscale iron-fertilization experiments have been conducted from 1993 to test the iron hypothesis and for future geoengineering as carbon sequestration. In the North Pacific, three experiments (SEEDS, SERIES and SEEDS II) have been carried out by A. Tsuda and his colleagues from 2001. This Grant-in-Aid supported the SEEDS II cruises, and detailed analysis and synthesis of other two experiments. Furthermore, preliminary bottle incubation experiments in which iron and phosphate were added, were carried out in the subtropical Pacific to test the feasibility of future mesoscale experiments. Data analysis and synthesis of these experiments have been done through a domestic workshop, domestic symposium, international workshop, international symposium, PICES-IFEP meeting and SOLAS-related meetings. The main conclusion of our experiments is iron-fertilization to HNLC waters enhance the primary production but the magnitude of phytoplankton accumulation, the timing of the bloom and dominant phytoplankton species varies depending on the iron concentration, depth of surface mixed layer, zooplankton biomass and the season. More importantly, the efficiency of carbon sequestration by sinking of particulate matter was not high as what have been expected, because of respiration of microbial organisms. These results importantly affect on the formation of the international consensus that iron-fertilization is an immature technology as carbon sequestration. On the other hand, iron had almost no effect in the subtropical experiments, but these experiments contributed for the accumulation of the basic knowledge of the subtropical ecosystems and formed a groundwork of SOLAS-related project (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas: Linkages in Biochemical Cycles between Surface Ocean and Lower Atmosphere).

  9. Study on the mechanisms of the 2〜3 year variation in the increasing trend of oxidant in the urban air

    (1) Collection and analyses of datasets for atmospheric pollutants and meteorological elements
    We obtained the atmospheric pollutants datasets of Aichi prefecture from 1991 to 2001 as well as the meteorological datasets at Nagoya. We identified the period when this variation was well defined (1985-1998). Since temporal variation in the oxidant concentration in Nagoya was closely related with that in ozone (O_3), this 2-3 year variation in oxidant can be regarded as that in O_3 in Nagoya. In addition, the precursors of O_3 such as NO_x and NMHC (total) were also collected and analyzed to find the similar variations in their trends.
    (2) Analyses of 03 dataset in the free troposphere over Japan and in the marine boundary layer over the western North Pacific
    Surface O_3 concentration is controlled by in-situ photochemical reactions and transport of the O_3 in the overlying free troposphere. In summer, O_3 in Nagoya can be also affected by the transport of O_3 from the North Pacific. Therefore we analyzed the behaviors in the O_3 concentrations in the free troposphere and at the Ogasawara Island between 1994 and 1997.
    (3) Measurements of C_2~C_<11> NMHCs in Nagoya
    To understand the variation in the photochemical processes in O_3 production, it is required to variation in the individual component of NMHCs. We developed the continuous measurement system of each NMHC component (C_2-C_<11>) with GC/FID and air sampling device, and obtained the NMHC data fro C_2-C_<11>. In particular, the ratio of NMHC/NOx increased in spring and summer could be explained by an increase emission of biogenic NMHC (isoprene), and this result will be helpful to investigate the mechanism.
    We have not yet revealed the mechanisms of 2-3 year variation in oxidant in urban air. Now we are investigating the differences in the processes between the well-defined periods and the not defined periods to reveal the factors controlling this variation.

    In order to investigate the contribution of NMHCs emitted by vegetation to photochemical production of ozone in the polluted urban air, automatic continuous measurement system for NMHCs (C_2-C_<10>) which are indispensable for photochemical production of ozone was constructed. Continuous measurement of NMHCs was set up from last December particularly focusing on the seasonal variations in concentrations of isoprene, α-pinene and β-pinene, and fraction of these gases to the total NMHC. In parallel, measurements of ozone, nitrogen oxides (NO, NO_2) and solar radiation (global solar radiation, ultra violet A and B) were also set up at the same time. These data were recorded in the personal computer to enable to manipulate various analyses.
    Based on the analysis of these data sets, seasonal variations both in ozone and its precursors were investigated, and relationship between the daytime increase of ozone and concentrations of precursors of ozone (NMHCs, NO_X) was explored. In addition, relative contribution of biogenic NMHCs to total NMHC was also studied.
    Since it was last December that whole system was ready for continuous observation, enough data has not yet been obtained to discuss these issues. These measurements are going on, and photochemical box model approach will be carried out including observed data to study the relative contribution of biogenic NMHCs to the photochemical production of ozone.

  15. Study on atmosphere-ocean interaction through marine biogehic sulfur compounds (dimethylsulfide)

    With support of this grant-in-aid, we performed following terms ; (1) development of automatic measurement system of atmospheric DMS, (2) measurement of DMS in the seawater and atmosphere over the western North Pacific in spring and winter, (3) setting up an observation station at Hachijojima Island to obtain time series of atmospheric DMS. In addition, analysis of transport pathway of air parcel by an isentropic trajectory Analysis was also performed, and we analyzed aerosol chemical compositions to detect the Kosa particle and oxidation products of DMS in the marine air. Moreover to obtain the distribution of chlorophyll-a in this area, remote sensing chlorophyll-a data derived from SeaWiPs satellite was analyzed.
    Sea-air DMS flux was estimated with DMS concentrations in the surface seawater and atmosphere, SST and surface wind speed. Relationship between sea-air DMS flux and atmospheric DMS abundance was analyzed.
    As a result of analysis, seawater DMS in spring was higher than in December by a factor of 1.5〜2 in this area. Chlorophyll-a concentration derived from SeaWiES was also higher in April than in December. These results were due to an increase of marine production in spring. In addition, high MSA and non sea-salt sulfate concentrations in aerosol were observed when air parcel was transported from the elevated chlorophyll-a area within 1〜2 days. According to column model approach, these elevated concentrations in aerosol were mainly due to the, high emission of DMS in the elevated chlorophyll-a area and rapid oxidation of DMS under the high ozone condition. Although Kosa events were observed in these observations, we did not succeed getting enough data to show any sign of impact of Kosa on marine production.

    木星の衛星エウロパには厚い氷盤の下に液体の水の層が存在することがほぼ確実視されている。これを実験的に確かめるために、平成11年度は、冷凍実験室のなかで熱対流が氷を融解する過程、および氷層と水層の最終平衡状態を実験的に調べた。平成12年度は、種々の制約によって室内実験では十分確認できなかった部分を追試するとともに、氷.水2層構造の形成条件をパラメータを変化させることによって可能なかぎり一般性をもって導出することを数値実験によって試みた。
    パラメータとして、レイリー数(Ra)と上下の温度差をとった。
    (1)Ra=100,000の場合:上下の温度差を変えて実験すると、最終的には氷対水の厚さはおおむね1:9の状態に落ち着いた。しかし、氷と水の厚さの比が1:1になるケースも少ないながら存在した。水層の中では不規則な熱対流が活動しており、この先突然状態変化を起こすことも考えられる。
    (2)Ra=10,000の場合:(1)の場合と状況は変わりない。
    このように、不規則的に層の厚さの比が異なって出現するというカオス的状態が見られたのは興味ある結果である。詳細に追求する必要がある。

    An observation station facing the Pacific ocean was set up in Ogasawara Hahajima island by 1000 km south to main land of Japan.
    Constructing automatic continuous measurement system to measure atmospheric dimethylsulfide (DMS), ozone and radon, and data communication system to check the measurement condition, almost continuous data sampling for one year has been conducted. Members of our group went to Ogasawara Hahajima island for ten days each month and collected aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). These samples were analyzed in laboratories at Nagoya university. In addition, using meteorological objective analysis data, isentropic backward trajectory analysis was carried out to look for the origins of the materials.
    It is concluded that, even at 100 km south to main land of Japan and Eurasian continent, Ogasawara Hahajima island undergoes influence of continental and/or anthropogenic materials under continental air mass in winter. There found a good correlation between concentration of CCN and nss-sulfate in the marine atmosphere. The precursors of this nss-sulfate would be DMS especially under maritime air mass, and anthropogenic sulfur dioxide under continental air mass.
