    To understand the social interactions among songbirds, extracting the timing, position, and acoustic properties of their vocalizations is essential. We propose a framework for automatic and fine-scale extraction of spatial-spectral-temporal patterns of bird vocalizations in a densely populated environment. For this purpose, we used robot audition techniques to integrate information (i.e., the timing, direction of arrival, and separated sound of localized sources) from multiple microphone arrays (array of arrays) deployed in an environment, which is non-invasive. As a proof of concept of this framework, we examined the ability of the method to extract active vocalizations of multiple Zebra Finches in an outdoor mesh tent as a realistic situation in which they could fly and vocalize freely. We found that localization results of vocalizations reflected the arrangements of landmark spots in the environment such as nests or perches and some vocalizations were localized at non-landmark positions. We also classified their vocalizations as either songs or calls by using a simple method based on the tempo and length of the separated sounds, as an example of the use of the information obtained from the framework. Our proposed approach has great potential to understand their social interactions and the semantics or functions of their vocalizations considering the spatial relationships, although detailed understanding of the interaction would require analysis of more long-term recordings.

    There are various discussions on the evolution of cooperation on different combinations of interaction network for playing games and the replacement network for imitation of strategies. This paper aims at clarifying the topological relationship between these networks that facilitates the evolution of cooperation by focusing on the intensity of selection for imitation process of strategies. We construct an agent-based model of the evolutionary prisoner's dilemma on different combinations of interaction and replacement networks. The relationship between these networks can be adjusted by the scales of interaction and reproduction, and the intensity of selection can be adjusted from the almost deterministic selection of the best strategy to the extremely stochastic selection. The evolutionary experiments shows that the larger scale of reproduction than the scale of interaction brought about higher level cooperation when the intensity of selection is high, and the minimum scale of interaction and reproduction was the best for the evolution of cooperation when the intensity of selection is low.     Maternal influence on offspring goes beyond strict nuclear (DNA) inheritance: inherited maternal mRNA, mitochondria, caring and nurturing are all additional sources that affect offspring development, and they can be also shaped by evolution. These additional factors are called maternal effects, and their important role in evolution is well established experimentally. This paper presents two models for maternal effects, based on a genetic algorithm and simulated development of neural networks. We extended a model by Eggenberger by adding two mechanisms for maternal effects: the first mechanism attempts to replicate maternal cytoplasmic control, while the second mechanism replicates interactions between the fetus and the uterine environment. For examining the role of maternal effects in artificial evolution, we evolved networks for the odd-3-parity problem, using increasing rates of maternal influence. Experiments have shown that maternal effects increase adaptiveness in the latter model. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

    個体間の相互作用によって大域的な挙動や構造が生じる創発的現象の解明は,複雑系科学における中心的なトピックである.本論文は,創発的現象の普遍的な性質を明らかにすることを目的とした,次の三つのテーマに関する具体的状況設定に基づくエージェントベースモデリングによる実験と解析をまとめたものである.はじめに,系を駆動する複数の適応プロセス間の相互作用に関する具体的状況設定として,動的環境における進化と学習の相互作用を取り上げ,表現型可塑性の進化を導入した繰返し囚人のジレンマゲームの戦略の進化モデルを構築した.実験の結果,いったん学習に依存した協調集団へと進化した後,学習によるコストにより必要最小限の学習に依存した協調集団へと進化するBaldwin効果と呼ばれる現象が確認され,両プロセスは協調行動の創発に対して協調的に働くことが示された.次に,相互作用の構造が集団の挙動に与える影響に関して,社会的集団における局所的な相互作用がもたらす協調行動の創発に焦点を当て,空間的局所性を導入したN人版繰返し囚人のジレンマゲームの戦略の進化モデルを構築した.特に,ゲームを行う際に生じる局所性が戦略の一部として進化する実験において,局所性の進化は進化なしの場合と比べ協調行動を促進し,相互作用の構造自体が変化する仕組みが系をより適応的な状態へと導くことが明らかになった.最後に,異なるレベルで生じる多様性間の相互作用に関する状況設定として,イベント会場における混雑情報提供を取り上げ,複数の施設を来場者が混雑情報に基づいて観賞してまわるマルチエージェントモデルを構築した.実験の結果,混雑情報の提供は来場者の行動の多様性を増加させるが,その副次的効果である時間経過に伴う将来の行動の多様性の減少によって,突発的に長い順番待ちの行列が発生するという,情報と行動の多様性間の動的な相互作用のシナリオが示された.

    The purpose of this study is to understand the dynamics of biological/cultural evolution of cooperation, and its application. First, we showed that direct and indirect reciprocity operate cooperatively preventing defective individuals form invading. Second, using a web-based experimental framework for dynamic and cooperative social relationships with real-time decision-making and rewarding environment, we showed that psychological characters of players might reflect their behavioral characteristics in the game. Third, our statistical analysis of players behavior in a social networking game showed that communication with a rather significant cost tends to lead to cooperation. Fourth, we presented a conceptual platform of gamified system with a dual layer structure, which was shown to promote reciprocity-based cooperation in targeted social contexts.

    This study focused on the origin of the human nature, especially theses three traits: language, theory of mind, and altruistic behavior. We used multifaceted constructive methods based on simulation, analysis and experiments with human subjects, and successfully proposed and demonstrated a hypothesis that these traits were coevolved affecting each other. We also explored the possibility for utilizing the results to encourage altruistic behavior in the real world.
