In the present study, a possible influence of intense magnetic fields on cleavage patterns during the early embryonic development of frogs was studied. The early cleavages in Xenopus laevis were disordered by horizontal magnetic fields of 10 T order. However, the magnetic field effect did not remain until when they become tadpoles.

We have developed a three–channel imaging Fabry–Perot interferometer with which to measure atmospheric wind and temperature in the mesosphere and thermosphere through nocturnal airglow emissions. The interferometer measures two–dimensional wind and temperature for wavelengths of 630.0 nm (OI, altitude, 200–300 km), 557.7 nm (OI, 96 km), and 839.9 nm (OH, 86 km) simultaneously with a time resolution of 20 min, using three cooled CCD detectors with liquid-N2 Dewars. Because we found that the CCD sensor moves as a result of changes in the level of liquid N2 in the Dewars, the cooling system has been replaced by thermoelectric coolers. The fringe drift that is due to changes in temperature of the etalon is monitored with a frequency–stabilized He–Ne laser. We also describe a datareduction scheme for calculating wind and temperature from the observed fringes. The system is fully automated and has been in operation since June 1999 at the Shigaraki Observatory (34.8N, 136.1E), Shiga, Japan. © 2001 Optical Society of America.

Thoracic spinal cord herniation presenting with Brown-Séquard syndrome 査読有り

An increasing number of cases involving spinal cord herniation have been reported since the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 57-year-old woman with a history of previous blunt thoracic back trauma resulting from a traffic accident 9 years ago, presented with Brown-Séquard syndrome. MRI of the thoracic spine revealed ventral displacement of the spinal cord at Th4/5 and a dorsal intradural arachnoid cyst. At surgery, a dural defect about 15 mm in length was identified, into which gliotic spinal cord with arachnoid membrane herniated. The herniated spinal cord was reduced and the dural defect was repaired using Goretex. A postoperative MRI showed the spinal cord in the normal position, and her clinical symptoms improved. We reviewed the characteristics of spinal cord herniations according to the reported cases. These cases can be divided into 2 categories : spontaneous or idiopathic one and post-traumatic ones. The present case is thought to be an idiopathic one, in spite of the patient's blunt back trauma.

Seasonal variations of activity and horizontal propagation direction of gravity waves in the MLT region at mid-latitude over Shigaraki, Japan (35 N) are investigated for various time and spatial scales using the MU radar observations and recent airglow imaging observations. Semiannual variation with solsticial maxima and equinoctial minima are generally observed for short period (< 5 hours) gravity waves. Eastward preference in summer and westward in winter for horizontal propagation direction is generally observed except for small scale (horizontal wavelength < about 15 km) gravity waves. Meridional preference such as northward in summer and southward in winter is also found in airglow imaging and some of the radar results. The preferential propagation direction between northward and eastward in summer is more commonly observed at various horizontal and time scales. © 2001 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. A geomagnetic negative sudden impulse (SI-) observed on May 13, 1995, was examined using magnetic field data from ETS VI and GOES 7 in the magnetosphere and ground geomagnetic observation networks. The SI- was caused by a sudden decrease in the solar wind dynamic pressure at the front boundary of a magnetic cloud embedded in a density enhancement region. The amplitude and the fall time at Kakioka geomagnetic observatory (magnetic latitude 26.9°, magnetic longitude 208.3°) were 26 nT and 10 min, respectively. Although SI- has been considered to be the mirror image of geomagnetic positive sudden impulse (SI+) or sudden commencement (SC), we found the polarization distribution of the SI- consistent with that of SC. We suggest that the contribution from the longitudinal movement of a twin-vortex ionospheric current system is dominant to produce the polarization of SC and SI-. We also discuss the relationship between the angle at which discontinuities in the solar wind impinge upon the magnetosphere and the geomagnetic response. Following a long period of consensus on the storm-substorm relationship, a dispute on this topic has emerged in recent years. The importance of substorms for the buildup of the terrestrial ring current, which is the major element of magnetic storms, has been questioned in several studies. This paper is an effort to assess the "fine structure" of the storm-substorm relationship, by investigating the correlation between the changes in Dst and the substorm-associated O + enhancements in the inner magnetosphere during the storm main phase. For this purpose we use energetic ion measurements from the Magnetospheric Ion Composition Spectrometer (MICS) on board the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES), and the newly produced high-resolution (5-min) Dst index for the intense storm of June 5, 1991. Substorm signatures from both MICS measurements and ground magnetometers correlate well with changes in the Dst decrease rate. This implies a significant influence of substorm occurrence on storm dynamics. © 2000 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

名古屋大学太陽地球環境研究所では, 超高層大気イメージングシステム(Optical Mesosphere Thermosphere Imager System)として, ファブリ・ペロー分光器, 単色全天カメラ(3台), 掃天フォトメーター(3台), 分光温度計を開発している。これらの機器のうち, 単色全天カメラと掃天フォトメーターの分光感度特性, カメラ画像の2次元感度特性を国立極地研究所の2m積分球及び分光スペクトロメーターを用いて求めた。分光スペクトロメーターによる校正実験により, 一つの干渉フィルターの面内における分光感度特性のばらつきが見いだされた。また, 積分球による校正実験により, いくつかの干渉フィルターにおいて, フィルターのゆがみによる干渉(ニュートン環)によるフリンジパターンが, 最終画像に現れる場合のあることが新たに見いだされ, これを補正するデータを得ることができた。これらの校正実験により, 大気光の分光観測に対して, 絶対光度を議論できるデータが得られるようになった。

We report calibration of the optical instruments of the Optical Mesosphere Thermosphere Imagers (OMTI) using facilities at the National Institute of Polar Research. OMTI has been developed to investigate dynamics of the upper atmosphere through nocturnal airglow emissions. OMTI consist of an imaging Fabry-Perot interferometer, three all-sky cooled-CCD cameras, three tilting-photometers, and a spectral airglow temperature imager (SATI). The all-sky cameras and the photometers have been calibrated using a 2-m integrating-sphere and a spectrometer. Absolute sensitivity and image-flattening data are obtained together with filter transmission functions. Inhomogeneity of transmission function on the filter surface is found from the calibration using the spectrometer. We also find that filters with highly-flattened image-quality surfaces may cause serious Newton's Ring pattern on final images. Examples of the data are shown for the cameras and the photometers based on the airglow observation at Shigaraki (35°N, 136°E), Japan.
