    We have verified a new mass spectrometry technique, corona discharge ionization-mass spectrometry, that is simple, rapid, nondestructive, and capable of real-time analysis, is applicable to the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from plants. To verify whether corona discharge ionization-mass spectrometry can analyze VOCs related to fruit aroma, we analyzed apple VOCs and found that corona discharge ionization-mass spectrometry can detect apple VOCs as sensitive as conventional GC-MS, or more sensitive than GC-MS for some compounds. In addition, we identified marker compounds from the fruits infected by pathogens, and we also succeeded in analyzing VOCs from leaves after being injured in real time.

    In this study, we showed that the new mass spectrometry PESI/MS/MS (Probe Electrospray Ionization-Tandem Mass Spectrometry) is a rapid, laborless and useful technology for the metabolite analysis of plants. By PESI/MS/MS, metabolites can be analyzed in seconds by simply sticking a needle into the sample, and local metabolite analysis and imaging analysis are also available. In addition, we developed the method to analyze 130 metabolites in 5 minutes and the platform to process the data automatically within 1 minute.

    By the high-throughput evaluation system for tissue adhesion, in vitro grafting (IVG), 3,000 chemicals were screened, and identified a novel activator of grafting was identified. The IVG test of plant hormones, analogs, and synthesis/action inhibitors, revealed that auxin promotes grafting. Comprehensive gene expression analysis suggested that the site of action of the novel compound was "reconstruction of the cell wall" and that of auxin was "cell division". On the other hand, the test of parasitic ability using parasitic plants revealed that plant hormones promote or suppress the tracheary element differentiation.

    Genome-wide analysis of MYB3R transcription factors, which regulate cell division, revealed existence 4 MYB3Rs (SlMYB3R1-4) in tomato. Pyrogenetic tree and gene expression analysis of SlMYB3R1-4 in various tomato organs suggested that SlMYB3R1 and SlMYB3R2 activate cell division in fruit, SlMYB3R3 suppresses cell division in fruit, and SlMYB3R4 promotes endoreduplication in mature fruit. To change tomato fruit size, genome editing of SlMYB3R3 was performed. The knockout tomato plants of SlMYB3R3 were produced by CRISPR/Cas9 technology. The knockout tomato plants set elongated fruits and occasionally peanut-like fruits.

    Petal specific InMYB1 promoter from morning glory functions recognizing petal identity at cell level, but not whole2 position in shoot apical meristem. In the upstream region of InMYB1, the 332-121 b upstream region contains cis-element, which defines petal identity. We produced the vector harboring 3 repeats of the 332-121 b upstream region of InMYB1 for molecular breeding of floricultural crops. GPP gene from rice can induce greening, morphological change and life extension in the petals of Arabidopsis, morning glory and petunia. These changes caused by addition of leaf identity to petals.
