    In this study, we conducted a field survey in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, to clarify whether rodent activity is affected by the presence or absence of dead culms of the dwarf bamboo Sasa borealis, a species characterized by a 120-year cycle of large-scale flowering, seeding, and dying. We found that a relatively larger number of wood mice, Apodemus speciosus and Apodemus argenteus, were caught using Sherman live traps in areas with dead S. borealis culms than in areas lacking the culms, thereby indicating that S. borealis culms, even if dead and leafless, can function as shelters in which the mice can evade predation. However, in the years when A. speciosus was abundant, A. argenteus avoided areas inhabited by A. speciosus and was restricted to areas lacking dead culms, which were devoid of shelter. A feeding experiment using Castanea crenata acorns clearly revealed that a larger number of acorns were foraged by mice in areas containing dead culms. Moreover, in the area with dead culms, the mice preferentially removed sound acorns prior to taking acorns that had been vacated by infesting moth larvae. These findings indicate that the shelter function of dead culms enables mice to carefully select sound acorns, which are nutritionally more beneficial than those that have been infested by moth larvae.

    Temperature is essential for the survival and development of eggs. Some anurans have evolved and developed foam nesting traits, with thermal insulation considered to be among their functions. Foam-nesting frogs tend to exhibit reproductive plasticity. For example, they oviposit on both trees and the ground. How such plasticity affects foam nest function is of major relevance and is likely related to the adaptation of foam nesting frogs. However, this has not been well studied. In this study, we examined the interaction between foam nest site, foam nest function, and egg fate using the Japanese green tree frog, Zhangixalus arboreus, and analysed how nest site differences (arboreal or terrestrial) affect the thermal function of foam nests. We compared the thermal functions of foam nests between arboreal and terrestrial oviposition sites of Z. arboreus. We artificially replaced half of the arboreal nests with terrestrial environments and recorded temperature in and outside of the experimental terrestrial nest and original arboreal nests. We also examined egg survival and hatching rates for all the nests. The results indicated superior heat insulation in terrestrial nests, with warmer temperatures inside than outside the nests, especially at night, which led to a high egg survival rate. Therefore, terrestrial ovipositing should be valid under cold weather conditions. This may be related to the evolutionary history of oviposition site plasticity of this genus, which originally had an arboreal oviposition trait but evolved into terrestrial site use owing to global cooling. Our novel insights into the evolution and adaptivity of foam nesting and oviposition site use in Z. arboreus make an important contribution to animal ecology.

    This study identifies fungi associated with Euwallacea fornicatus and determines whether these fungal species play the role of primary symbiont. E. fornicatus adults that emerged from the branches of infested trees in Okinawa main island, Japan, were collected and used to isolate fungi. Fusarium kuroshium and Penicillium citrinum were the most dominant fungal associates of females and males, respectively. F. kuroshium was much more frequently isolated from the head, including mycangia (fungus-carrying organs), of females than any other body parts. We inoculated healthy mango saplings with F. kuroshium or F. decemcellulare, both of which were symbionts of E. fornicatus females infesting mango trees. F. kuroshium decreased leaf stomatal conductance and rate of xylem sap-conduction area and increased length and area of xylem discoloration of the saplings, thereby weakening and killing some. These results suggest that F. kuroshium, a mycangial fungus of E. fornicatus, inhibits water flow in mango trees. This study is the first to report that F. kuroshium causes wilt disease in mango trees and that it is a primary fungal symbiont of E. fornicatus.

    Bambusoideae is a taxon of mass-flowering monocarpic perennials with a long life cycle. Forest ecosystems are affected by Bambusoideae seeding and death events in various ways, including an increased abundance of Apodemus spp. The utilization and preference of dwarf bamboo seeds over tree seeds by field mice remain elusive. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether field mice prefer dwarf bamboo to tree seeds. We examined one dwarf bamboo species (Sasa borealis) against four tree species with varying acorn/fruit traits (Castanea crenata, Quercus crispula, Fagus crenata, and Lindera triloba). The seeds were placed in a container in a forest among dead S. borealis culms, with an automatic camera monitoring the setup. The examined seeds were mainly foraged by two field mouse species, Apodemus speciosus and Apodemus argenteus, with preference in the following order: C. crenata, L. triloba, S. borealis, F. crenata, and Q. crispula. Our findings indicated that during S. borealis mast seeding years, predation pressure on F. crenata and Q. crispula seeds could be considerably reduced. This suggests that mast seeding might disrupt the normal pattern of survival, and seed dispersal patterns, potentially altering the forest vegetation composition.

    Bambusoideae are well-known for their large-scale flowering, seeding, and death events that occur after a vegetative phase that can often last for decades. These events are a valuable resource for many animals. Their mast seeding, in particular, affects rodent populations although the causal relationship between them is speculative. Moreover, the species of animals that utilize this resource also remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the interaction between mast seeding plants and animals by conducting a feeding test using the seeds of a dwarf bamboo species (Sasa borealis) at different seasons and in different forest types. The results revealed that two mouse species, Apodemus speciosus and A. argenteus, utilized the seeds. They both predated as well as removed and sometimes buried the seeds, exhibiting small-seed caching behavior. Furthermore, A. speciosus was found to exhibit higher seed predation at covered sites and switching to removal behavior at the more exposed, open sites, while A. argenteus showed no distinguishable trends. Additionally, A. speciosus utilized the seeds less frequently in fall than in summer, suggesting a shift in diet towards acorns when available. Collectively, the results of this study provide novel insights into the interaction between mast seeding plants and the animals that utilize them.

    Xylosandrus crassiusculus, a fungus-farming wood borer native to Southeastern Asia, is the most rapidly spreading invasive ambrosia species worldwide. Previous studies focusing on its genetic structure suggested the existence of cryptic genetic variation in this species. Yet, these studies used different genetic markers, focused on different geographical areas and did not include Europe. Our first goal was to determine the worldwide genetic structure of this species based on both mitochondrial and genomic markers. Our second goal was to study X. crassiusculus' invasion history on a global level and identify the origins of the invasion in Europe. We used a COI and RAD sequencing design to characterize 188 and 206 specimens worldwide, building the most comprehensive genetic data set for any ambrosia beetle to date. The results were largely consistent between markers. Two differentiated genetic clusters were invasive, albeit in different regions of the world. The markers were inconsistent only for a few specimens found exclusively in Japan. Mainland USA could have acted as a source for further expansion to Canada and Argentina through stepping stone expansion and bridgehead events. We showed that Europe was only colonized by Cluster II through a complex invasion history including several arrivals from multiple origins in the native area, and possibly including bridgehead from the United States. Our results also suggested that Spain was colonized directly from Italy through intracontinental dispersion. It is unclear whether the mutually exclusive allopatric distribution of the two clusters is due to neutral effects or due to different ecological requirements.

     これまでに日本に無かった新しい教科書(訳書)を提案した。その内容は以下のとおりである。
     昆虫と菌類は様々な関係を持っている。菌類の立場で述べれば、昆虫に感染して殺す。殺さずに体表や腸そして昆虫の体内までも生活空間として利用する。昆虫に餌として栽培される。これらの関係について、生態学的な興味から類似の書が過去にも、この本の編者であるBlackwellにより出版された。昆虫と菌類のそれぞれの関係の事例はそれだけで興味深いが、さらに本書は、生態学的な記述に加え、最近進展している分子系統学的な知見が加わって記述されているところが特徴だといえる。汎世界的に分布する寄主範囲の広い1種だと考えられてきた種が、実は複数種から成ることが判明したり、今まで菌類とは考えられていなかった昆虫の病原体が菌類との類縁性を指摘されたりという実例があげられている。さらに、昆虫の系統とその昆虫に随伴する菌類の系統が合わせて解析され、その進化の道筋が考察されるなど、昆虫と菌類の生物間相互作用の歴史を考えさせてくれる書である。

    森林昆虫の多様性を、単なる数・量の比較だけではなく、生態的・遺伝的多様性を具体的に吟味できる質の高いパラメーターも含めて解析する。着眼点は、微生物との共生が、森林昆虫の種多様性、生態的・遺伝的多様性を創出する可能性である。その中で、昆虫による共生菌の窃盗現象と、それに伴う菌類貯蔵器官の退化の真相を究明する。これらを総合して、樹木をめぐる昆虫と微生物の種分化に関わる統一理論を構築する。
    イチジク樹に穿孔するアイノキクイムシについて、共生菌(Fusarium属菌)のセルロース分解酵素を分析し、その効能を明らかにした。また、アイノキクイムシの天敵昆虫を発見し、本種を含む様々な養菌性キクイムシに対する捕食特性を実証した。
    マンゴー樹に穿孔する養菌性キクイムシ(Euwallacea fornicatus)について、羽化成虫から分離される菌類を特定した。雌は、共生菌の貯蔵器官(mycangia)が存在する頭部で、Fusarium kuroshiumが優占した。デイゴ樹におけるEuwallacea属キクイムシとFusarium属菌の関係も明らかにした。
    Xyloterini族の養菌性キクイムシについて、mycangiaのタイプと共生菌の属の対応関係に基づき、キクイムシと菌類の複雑な共進化過程を紐解いた。
    ヨシブエナガキクイムシの随伴菌類相について、分離培養とメタゲノム解析による解明を試みた。分離試験では5種類のRaffaelea属菌と1種類のAmbrosizyma属菌が検出された。それらは主たるmycangiaがある胸部以外からも検出された。メタゲノム解析では雌雄で種構成に大きな差異は認められなかった。
    ヒゲナガカミキリ属3種について、マツノマダラカミキリからはOphiostoma属2種、Leptographium属2種、カラフトヒゲナガカミキリからはLeptographium属菌2種、Grosmannia属菌1種、Graphilbum属菌1種、シラフヨツボシヒゲナガカミキリからはOphiostoma属3種が検出された。
    Seinura 属線虫の探索を行い、1新種、国内新産1種、加えて、S. caverna の2株を分離し、未記載種に関しては、S. shigaensis として新種記載を行った。
    予定していた、①供試虫の捕獲・同定と生態調査、②菌類貯蔵器官(mycangia)の探索、③菌類の分離・同定、線虫の分離・同定、④相互作用系の解明について、限定的(新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響を受け)ながらも、実施できた。
    出張できなかった調査地の⑤系統地理学的解析は断念した。また、養菌窃盗性キクイムシの生息する西表島での調査が行えなかった。
    やはり、①供試虫の捕獲・同定と生態調査を遂行する上で、新型コロナウイルス感染症による出張制限が問題である。その対応策として、現地協力者に供試虫の送付を依頼する予定である。

    Focusing on wood-boring insects, we have examined their habitation situation, reproductive patterns, etc. About two species of ambrosia beetles belonging to Euwallacea genus, we have clarified non-destructively location and structure of mycangia (fungal storage organ) by CT scanning. We have isolated and identified fungi and nematodes from the mycangia and insect bodies, host trees. We have inoculated these fungi and nematodes into host trees, and monitored wilting process of the trees to judge their pathogenicity. We have bred some kinds of organisms, which were collected or isolated, on various conditions, and proved their growth potential and interactions. Among study sites, we have found morphological and genetical differences of the organisms, and analyzed the data phylogeographically. Based on the above results, we have showed risky insects and their associated microorganisms, which should be marked from now on.

    In Aichi Prefecture and Kagoshima Prefecture (Yakushima Island), we investigated species composition and ecology of rodents (field mice) as well as infestation pattern of insects (weevils and moths) to seeds of broad-leaved trees.
    We discussed population density, body weight and reproductive period of the mice such as Apodemus speciosus and A. argenteus based on environmental characteristics (tree flora, understory vegetation, elevation, etc.) of each study site. A specific correlation between body weight and elevation (elevation is higher, body weight is lighter) was found in Yakushima Island.
    We put seeds, which were classified into some categories according to CT scanning observation and volatiles analysis, on a food station to be exposed to the mice, and recorded their behaviors of handling and transportation of the seeds. A series of food-choice tests revealed which category of the seeds the mice prefer (rate and ranking of seeds transported) and dislike (reject frequency of them).
