    To clarify the stabilization process of and nature of soil organic carbon (SOC), the relationship between the chemical structure of humic substances and their degradability, the nature of bound-type humin, the formation process of microbe derived bound-type SOC, and the relationship between the chemical structure of applied organic matter (AOM) and the accumulation form of SOC. The results revealed that humic substances with higher blackness and aromaticity are more resistant to microbial degradation under conditions without physical or chemical protection, that bound-type humin is not humic/fulvic acids that cannot be extracted by strong adsorption to minerals, that microbe derived organic matter, in particular saccharides forms new bound-type SOC, and that bound-type SOC can be produced from both AOM components and microorganisms which utilized AOM, but which one accumulates more depends on the chemical structure of the AOM.

    To elucidate the stabilization mechanisms of soil organic C (SOC) in paddy soils and those for cattle manure (CM) and biochar in upland fields as well as to confirm the formation of black humic acids (HAs) owing to volcanic ash were aimed. Progression of simultaneous accumulation of SOC with enhanced stability in terms of C structure and adsorption to clay minerals and labile SOC were found in macro aggregates in paddy soils. Analyses of the archib soil samples from CM applied soils did not indicate an enhancement in the stability of SOC in terms of chemical structure and accumulation form. Biochar equivalent to 33-89% of the initial amount was maintained 5-7 years after application(s) and up to 20% was stabilized by binding to clay minerals. Incubation of Type Rp HAs with volcanic ash at 40-60oC, respectively, increased degree of humification with a larger extent at a higher temperature. The increase in condensed aromatic structures was also suggested for those incubated at 60oC.

    Impact of the development of tropical peat swamp forest into oil palm plantation (OPP) was investigated in terms of decomposition rates and processes of tropical peat under OPP management, and the factors affecting to it. Our results showed: 1) grain size of peat becomes smaller as the decomposition proceeds, which, depending on peat type, suppresses decomposition by negative feedback. 2) Water content influences bidirectionary on peat decomposition: as the water content increases, oxygen diffusion rate lowers on one hand, but mobility of substrates and enzymes increases on the other hand. 3) Compaction of peat suppresses oxygen diffusion rate, resulting in the suppression of peat decomposition. 4) Microbial community structure of tropical peat under primary forest is similar, while some proportional variation exists, among different forest types. 5) Precipitation amount during wet-season may influence decomposition of peat in OPP during ensuing dry season.
